Vergie Howard
1926-2003
Vergie Clemons Howard, 76, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Howard is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Buddy Payne, pastor of the First United Methodist Church will officiate.
Graveside service will follow at 12:30 p.m. in the Old Glory Cemetery.
Born Oct. 25, 1926 in Crawford, she married Robert Vinson Clemons on May 10, 1947 in Waco. He died May 29, 1979.
During World War II, Mrs. Howard worked at the McGregor bomb factory and also at the Stamford Flight School. She was a member of the VFW and the American Legion for many years.
Mrs. Howard worked as an accountant and in sales for several department stores and recently retired as a sales associate for Wal-Mart. She attended the First United Methodist Church in Snyder.
She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Hamilton and Jewell Griggs; a brother, Hubert Willman; two grandchildren, Steve Clemons and Holly Winstead; and one great-grandson, Drake Jones.
Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Bowlin of Snyder and Dianna Winstead of Corpus Christi; a son, David Clemons of Garland; a stepson and his wife, Robert Gene and Nancy Clemons of Leonard; a stepdaughter and her husband, Barbara and Kenneth Stevens of Waco; a sister, Mozelle Ferguson of Lubbock; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Robby and Nicole Winstead and Romey and Heildi Winstead, all of Corpus Christi; Janee and Todd Odom of Kerrville; Courtney and Greg Jones, Barrett Bowlin and Brett Bowlin, all of Snyder, Page Betke of Birmingham, Ala.; Nikki and Jay Higgins of Dallas, and Christi and Don Tanner of Crawford; nine great-grandchildren, Zerek and Spence Jones of Snyder; Taylor, Hunter and Tyler Winstead and William Winstead, all of Corpus Christi; Blake and Conner Odom of Kerrville; and Logan Higgins of Dallas.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Bernice Hale
1909-2003
LUBBOCK -- Bernice Reed Hale, a former resident of Snyder, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Midland.
Funeral service for Mrs. Hale, 94, is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Lubbock Primitive Baptist Church with Elder George Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Englewood Cemetery in Slaton under the direction of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.
Born July 24, 1909 in Georgetown to John Henry and Dessie Viola Mariner, the family lived all over Texas and New Mexico.
She married Clinton Dewey Reed on Feb. 21, 1926 in Post. During their 49 years of marriage, the family lived in various towns in West Texas as Mr. Reed was a section foreman for Santa Fe Railroad. He died May 9, 1975.
She married Thomas Belton “Chic” Hale on May 5, 1979. He died April 17, 1996. Mrs. Hale also was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, two sisters and one grandson, James Bryan Barnes.
Mrs. Hale moved from Snyder to Midland in 1997.
Survivors include six daughters and five sons-in-law, Bobbie and Wallace Combest of Snyder, Doris and Bill Turner of Midland, Verna and Harold Ingle of Sudan, Billie and Don Everett of Lubbock, Linda and Dr. Woodrow Hitchcock of Clifton, Va., and Clynice Baker of Midland; 20 grandchildren, including Jana Davis of Snyder; 32 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Kelly Barnes, Clinton Jones, Dr. Richard White, Kevin Combest, Scott Baker and Reed Hitchcock. Honorary pallbearers are her five sons-in-law and other grandsons Roger Barnes, Michael Jones, Randy White, Gary White and a special friend of the family, Don James.
The family will greet friends at the Lubbock Primitive Baptist Church, 4401 N. University, from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
The family suggests memorials to the hospice of your choice, the Snyder or Lubbock Primitive Baptist Church, or a favorite charity.
J.P. Ellis
1916-2003
Jackson P. Ellis, longtime Scurry County resident, died this morning in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Ellis, 87, is set for 2 p.m. Sunday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. Tom Holcomb, minister, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Born Feb. 4, 1916 in Ira, he was the son of the late Thomas Jackson and Eva May Ellis who farmed southwest of Dunn.
Mr. Ellis was as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving with the combat engineers and earning five battle stars.
After the war, Mr. Ellis returned to Scurry County. He and other family members hired out to drilling contractors to learn how. They then pooled Ellis family resources and drilled for oil on the family farm. The Ellis Drilling Co. was formed and later Ellis Production.
A member of the East Side Church of Christ, Mr. Ellis also was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jewel in 1974; and his second wife, Margie in 1999.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Coy Dale Rhodes of Snyder; five brothers and three sisters-in-law, Jeff Ellis of Dallas, Buck Ellis of Big Spring, Othal and Essie Pearl Ellis and Ather and Mary Ellis, all of Colorado City, and Wayne and Sandy Ellis of Livingston; a sister and brother-in-law, Julia and Lynn Fox of Snyder; and one granddaughter, Whitney Graham of Denton.
Family visitation will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Claudia Burnett

FORT STOCKTON -- Claudia Burnett, the sister of Sandra Clay of Dunn, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, in Odessa.
Graveside service for Mrs. Burnett, 57, of Odessa is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the East Hill Cemetery.
Born on Dec. 3, 1945 in El Paso, Mrs. Burnett was a dog breeder and had lived in Odessa for 35 years. She had previously lived in Fort Stockton. Mrs. Burnett was a member of Caprock Baptist Church.
Survivors also include her mother, Anna Elam of Fort Stockton; two daughters, Cathy Caskey and Brandi Halbaedier, both of Odessa; two sons, Jamie Halbaedier of Conroe and Derick Halbaedier of Odessa; and six grandchildren.
Willie Barnes
1945-2003
WICHITA FALLS -- Funeral service for Willie Barnes, son of Rosie Lee Barnes of Snyder, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in the Young and Company Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Barnes, 57, died Friday, Sept. 26, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Born Oct. 18, 1945 in Taylor, he lived in Snyder a short time, moving to Wichita Falls as a young boy.
Survivors also include two sisters, Louise Scott and Rozee Huntsman, both of Snyder; eight brothers, Elmo Barnes of San Antonio, Steve Barnes, Colvin Barnes and Paul Ray Barnes, all of Dallas, Robert Barnes of Austin, Mikel Barnes, Donald Barnes and Wayne Barnes, all of Wichita Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
