KERMIT -- Anita Kubena, a former resident of Scurry County, died Monday, March 22, in Odessa.
Funeral service for Mrs. Kubena, 72, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the Belvue Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Cannon officiating. Interment will follow in the Kermit Cemetery under the direction of Family Services Funeral Parlor.
Born in Rotan, she was married to Frankie Kubena who preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Tara Parker of Eunice, N.M.; a sister, Nina Evans of Corsicana; a brother-in-law, Jimmy Kubena of Snyder; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Jimmie Brooks
1919-2000
Jimmie Marie Brooks, former Snyder resident, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in the Lutheran Home of West Texas in Lubbock where she had resided for the last five years.
A memorial service for Mrs. Brooks, 81, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 607 N. College, with Michael O’Halloran, minister, officiating.
Born on April 11, 1919 in Batesville, Ark., she moved to Snyder in 1973 from New Mexico. She became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1949.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherell O’Halloran of Snyder.
Leon Bruns
1945-2000
Leon Claude Bruns, the brother of three Snyder residents, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, at his home in Sonora following a sudden illness.
Service for Mr. Bruns, 55, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. James Merrell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Feb. 9, 1945 in Roscoe, Mr. Bruns was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Faye Bruns.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lana and Jessie Loper of Las Vegas, Nev., and Christy and Eric Johnson of McKinney; a son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Angela Bruns of Las Vegas; a stepson and his mother, Brian Potter nad Theo Hold of Colorado City; the children’s mother, Sandra Neely of Bonham; a sister, Blanche Lane of Snyder; and three brothers and a two sisters-in-law, Roland and Sharon Bruns, and Howard Bruns, all of Snyder, and Truett and Jeri Bruns of Roscoe; and one granddaughter, Erica Johnson of McKinney.
June Garrett
1926-2000
HIDE-A-WAY LAKE -- June Garrett, former Snyder resident, died Monday, Dec. 4, at her home in Hide-A-Way Lake.
Service for Mrs. Garrett, 74, were held today at Hide-A-Way Lake Community Church. Interment was to follow in Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler.
Born on Nov. 14, 1926 in Burkburnett, she moved from West Texas to Hide-A-Way Lake in 1991. She and her husband lived in Snyder during the 1950s and 1960s where he worked for Mobil Oil. Mrs. Garret was a member of the Hide-A-Way Lake Community Church and the garden club. She worked as a legal secretary.
She is survived by her husband, Homer C. Garrett of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Debbie Garrett of Tyler; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Bill Martin of Fort Worth; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Toby Sides

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. -- Toby Gene Sides of Merritt Island, Fla., brother of Scott Cunningham of Snyder, died Friday, June 1, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Graveside service for Mr. Sides, 39, is set for 3 p.m. Friday in Frontneck, Fla. Brevard Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Born on Oct. 26, 1961 in Colorado City, Mr. Sides worked for U-Haul. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.B Perry of Colorado City.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Deana and Bill Sides of Wellington, Fla.; another brother, Tony Sides of Merritt Island; one sister, Tammy Reynolds of Merritt Island; a sister-in-law, Samantha Cunningham of Snyder; and two nephews.
Frances Allen
1921-2001
Frances Allen, a lifelong resident of Scurry County, died Monday, July 30, at her home in Snyder after a lengthy illness.
Service for Mrs. Allen, 80, is set for 11 a.m. Thursday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jake Chaney, pastor of Lake Colorado City Christian Fellowship Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Born July 3, 1921 in Snyder, she married Travis Allen on Oct. 30, 1937 in Scurry County. He died on Nov. 13, 2000. She also was preceded in death by a son, Calvin Allen in 1982; two brothers, H.P. Wellborn and Junior Wellborn; and a sister, Joyce Wellborn.
A homemaker, Mrs. Allen had lived in Snyder about six months, having moved from the Lake Thomas area. She was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church at Lake Colorado City.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Fred Turner of Brady and Comelle and Roger Williams of Lubbock; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Woody and Jean Allen of Lubbock; a sister-in-law, Sandra Allen of Midland; three sisters, Estelle Pierce of Snyder, Doris Alexander of Big Spring and Charlene Jarrett of the Dallas area; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Aubrey Smith
1932-2001
LUBBOCK – Aubrey Wayne Smith, a former Scurry County resident, died Saturday, July 28, at his home in Lubbock after a long battle with cancer.
Graveside service for Mr. Smith, 68, is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the City of Lubbock Cemetery with the Rev. Ken Horn officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.
Born Nov. 24, 1932 in Vera, Tex., he earned an associate degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, Mr. Smith married Gladys Darlene White on Jan. 20, 1962 in Snyder. She died Feb. 11, 1998. He also was preceded in death by a son, John Smith, in 1990.
Mr. Smith worked as a senior telegraph operator for Western Union for 28 years, retiring in 1986. He had lived in Fluvanna, Snyder, Austin and Shreveport before moving to Lubbock.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Smith of Lubbock; three brothers, Milton Smith of Greenville, Harold Smith of Kentucky and Kenneth Smith of Houston; and a sister, Frances Addison of New Mexico.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or to the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon.
Robert Stark
1951-2001
ODESSA - Robert “Bob” Stark, the grandfather of Jason Stark of Snyder, died Friday, July 27, in Medical Center Hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Stark, 69, was held Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Wright officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Born Dec. 8, 1932 in Mangum, Okla., he was a U.S. Army veteran. An employee of ARCO Oil and Gas for more than 20 years, he had moved to Odessa from Crane in 1991.
Mr. Stark was a member of the Westover Baptist Church the VFW and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Fern Stark of Odessa; a son, Robert Stark Jr. of Houston; a daughter, Laura Richards of Lamesa; a brother, Gresham Stark of Dallas; a sister, Violet Norris of Mangum; and four other grandchildren.
Juan Trejo
1937-2001
ROTAN – Juan M. Trejo Sr., the brother of Pauline Luna of Snyder, died Sunday, July 29, in Fisher County Hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Trejo, 64, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and burial will follow in the Belvieu Cemetery.
Born March 30, 1937 in New Braunfels, he married Ofilia Randez on July 4, 1960 in Rotan. He had worked at the cotton oil mills in Rotan and Sweetwater, for Brazos Transport and had farmed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pablo and Juanita Trejo; and a sister, Christina Trejo.
Survivors include his wife, Ofilia Trejo of Rotan; two sons, Juan Trejo Jr. and Paul Trejo, both of Rotan; a daughter, Diamantine Martin of Rotan; two other sisters, Gravel Martinez of Rotan and Mary Marrow of Rising Star; a brother, Domingo Trejo of Huntsville; and seven grandchildren.
Juanita Segovia
1939-2001
MIDLAND – Juanita Segovia, the mother of Abel Ybarra of Snyder, died Friday, July 27, in a Midland hospital.
Graveside service for Mrs. Segovia, 61, was set for 2 p.m. today in the Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Wilhelm officiating.
Born Dec. 29, 1939 in San Benito, she was reared there. She married Benjamin Ybarra in 1959. They lived in various towns before settling in Lubbock. She moved to Midland recently to be with family. A homemaker, she was a cursillita with the Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Lupita Mancha and Maria Rosa Segovia.
Survivors include two other sons, Jesus Ybarra of Lubbock and Benjamin Ybarra of Nolanville; three daughters, Aurora Ybarra and Guadalupe Estrada of Midland and Yolanda Ybarra of Lubbock; three brothers, Enrique Segovia of Lockney, Santos Segovia of San Benito, and Leonicio Segovia of San Benito; three sisters, Ester Garcia of Lozano, Elena Ruiz of San Benito and Joyce Segovia of Muskogee, Okla.; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
