Troy Haney
1925-2003
ABILENE -- Troy Haney, the brother of Jean Godair of Snyder, died Monday, March 3, in an Abilene hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Haney, 78, is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories.
Born Jan. 9, 1925 in Lamesa, Mr. Haney was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and he married Betty Scott on Dec. 8, 1946 in Lamesa.
Mr. Haney moved to Abilene from Little Rock, Ark., in 1958 and he was general manager of Great American Reserve Life Insurance Company. After his retirement, he owned and operated Jiffy Stop Food Store from 1973 to 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Haney of Abilene; three daughters, Diane Sisco of Roanoke, Debbie Haney of Lubbock and Kathy Bunnell of Abilene; a brother, E.D. Hilburn of Abilene; three other sisters, Marie Lybrand of Lamesa, Velma Pierson of New Mexico and Betty Kidd of Lubbock; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
Lolo Martinez
1955-2003
ELDORADO -- Isidoro “Lolo” Rangel Martinez, the son of Manuela Espinosa of Snyder, died Sunday, March 2.
Funeral service for Mr. Martinez, 47, is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Templo Getsemani Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow in the Eldorado Cemetery under the direction of Kerbow Funeral Home.
Born April 4, 1955, Mr. Martinez was a musician with the Grupo Milagro band.
He was preceded in death by his wife Vangie Martinez; his grandfather, Manuel Rangel; and a brother, Willie Martinez.
Survivors also include his grandmother, Sara Rangel of Eldorado; two brothers, Antonio Martinez and Ernest Rangel, both of Eldorado; three sisters, Anna Bertha Hoxsey of Snyder, Anna Maria Rangel of Sweetwater and Lori Parish of Houston; his father, Ascension Martinez of Eldorado; and a special uncle, Isabel Rangel of Rockspring.
David Casey
1919-2003
David E. Casey, a former Snyder resident, died Monday, March 3, in Longview.
Service for Mr. Casey, 83, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday in the Chandler Street Church of Christ with Chris Vidacovich officiating. Burial will follow in the Rusk County Memorial Gardens under the direction of Rader Funeral Home.
He was born July 9, 1919 in Altus, Ark., to Ralph T. and Carrie Casey. Mr. Casey served with the 54th Naval Seabees in the Philippines during World War II.
He was maintenance supervisor with Exxon for 38 years and lived in Snyder from 1958-1969. He was a member of the Chandler Street Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 63 years, Hettie Casey.
Survivors include a son, David Casey of Kilgore; a daughter, Peggy Jones of Kilgore; a sister, Stella Land of Katy; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Opal Dean
1910-2003
Opal King Dean, 92, died Tuesday, March 4, at the home of her granddaughter, Edilyn Smith, in Snyder.
Funeral service for Mrs. Dean is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church in Big Spring with the Rev. Randy Cotton officiating.
Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hillside Memorial Gardens in Snyder. Arrangements are under the direction of Myers and Smith Funeral Home in Big Spring.
Born April 13, 1910 in Brownwood, she married Claude L. King in 1927 and he died in 1960. She married Ferman L. Dean on Aug. 16, 1973.
The Deans lived in Rising Star a few years before moving to Big Spring. Mr. Dean died on Oct. 6, 1998.
A homemaker, Mrs. Dean was a member of the order of Eastern Star and Trinity Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Eddy King; and five brothers, Lois, Gilbert, Carl, Paul and Dick Madison.
Survivors include two sons, Claude King of Quanah and Joe King of Huron, S.D.; a brother, Louie Madison of Andrews; six other grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Trinity Baptist Church building fund, Box 1448 in Big Spring, 79721.
Nona Ballew
1930-2003
SEMINOLE -- Nona “Joey” Ballew, a native of Borden County, died Tuesday, March 4.
Funeral service for Mrs. Ballew, 72, was set for 2 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. R.A. Hanks officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Boyer Funeral Home.
Born March 7, 1930 in Borden County, she married J.R. “Pat” Ballew on Aug. 13, 1953 in Lovington, N.M. She had lived in Seminole since 1937 until moving to Andrews one year ago.
A member of the First Baptist Church in Seminole, she was retired from American National Insurance Company and was co-owner of Seminole Safety Anchor.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and a son, Gene Cecil Ballew.
Survivors include a son, Pete Ballew of Andrews; two sisters, Pat Humble of Seminole and Irene Creighton of Gail; and three grandchildren.
Geneva Bryce
1916-2003
Geneva Bryce, longtime Snyder resident, died Thursday, March 6, in Kristi Lee Manor in Colorado City after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Bryce, 86, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the 37th Street Church of Christ with Dale Huff, minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born May 16, 1916 in Fort Worth, she married Lester C. Bryce on Nov. 11, 1939 in Snyder. He died Dec. 8, 2002.
Five brothers also preceded her in death.A homemaker, Mrs. Bryce was a member of the 37th Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Lannie Lee of Snyder and Nolene and Eddie Lloyd of Alice; two sisters, Rozelle Martin and Cumi Hanback, both of Snyder; a brother, Howard Franks of Snyder; four grandchildren, Angla Richardson of Orange Grove, Skipper Sutton of Orange Grove and LaTrisha Spain of Dallas, and Lyndell Lee of Abilene; and six great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 this evening at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Otis Francis
1933-2003
SWEETWATER -- Otis Francis, a former sports editor of the Snyder Daily News, died Wednesday, March 5.
Service with military honors for Mr. Francis is set for 3 p.m. Monday in Restland of Dallas. He had retired from the Sweetwater Reporter in 1999.
Mr. Francis, born Dec. 24, 1933 in Hutto, graduated from high school in Waco and from a university in Syracuse, N.Y. His military career included two years in the Marines and 25 years in the Air Force, retiring with numerous achievements and medals. He had won several awards from the Associated Press.
He was preceded in death by a son, Clemens Francis; a brother, Bruce Francis; his father, Henry Francis; and his mother, Ethel Francis.
Survivors include his wife, Kaethe Francis of Sweetwater, a son, Henry Francis; a daughter, Catja Broll; a stepdaughter, Yahamo Francis; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Fred Bullard
1921-2003
Fred Bullard, longtime Scurry County rancher and businessman, died Monday, March 17, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock after a sudden illness.
Service for Mr. Bullard, 81, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Miller Robinson, retired Baptist minister, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Snyder Cemetery under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
He was born on July 17, 1921 in Memphis, Tex.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Bullard of Snyder; two sons, Drew Bullard of Snyder and Tommy Bullard of Woodstock, N.Y.; and a sister, Florene Merritt of Snyder.
Gladys Sturdivant
1924-2003
Gladys Marie Sturdivant, a longtime Snyder resident, died Monday, March 17, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
Funeral service for Mrs. Sturdivant, 78, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Michael Pigg, First Church of the Nazarene pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Born Oct. 10, 1924 in Hale County, she married Charles Sturdivant on July 13, 1940 in Snyder. He died in 1976.
A homemaker, Mrs. Sturdivant had been a resident of Snyder since 1928 and was a member of the Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gary Sturdivant.
Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Sturdivant of Snyder, Roy Sturdivant of Hammond, La., and Wayne Sturdivant of Beaumont; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
