Opal Beaver
1905-2003
Opal Beaver, longtime Fluvanna resident, died Wednesday, March 12, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Services for Mrs. Beaver, 97, are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Bell-Cypert Seale Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Alexander, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater, and Rev. Cecil Foster, pastor of the Fluvanna Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fluvanna Cemetery.
Born on Nov. 11, 1905 in Traywick, Texas, she married Leo Beaver on June 3, 1934 in Nacogdoches. He died April 7, 1987. A homemaker, Mrs. Beaver was a member of the Fluvanna United Methodist Church.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Lynda Beaver; five brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James and Ozane Beaver of Sweetwater; two grandsons and their spouses, David and Margaret Beaver and Steve and Becky Beaver, all of Fluvanna; two brothers, Thomas Mitchell of Mechanicsbury, Pa, and Cecil Mitchell of Kilgore; two sisters, Ema Joe Myers of Marshall and Ruby Bane of Arlington; four great-grandsons, Lance, Monte, Chad and Cody Beaver.
Elizabeth Roberts
1917-2003
Elizabeth F. Roberts, sister of Frank Herridge of Gail, died Monday, March 10, in College Station.
Service for Mrs. Roberts, 85, is set for 10 a.m. Friday in McCoy Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Lyndel Hix officiating. Burial will follow in the Sweetwater.
She was born April 14, 1917 in Bronte and married William J. Roberts on Sept. 19, 1936 in Ballinger. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Roberts attended schools in Marie and Concho. Living in Sweetwater since the 1940s where she worked for Walls, Village Grocery Store and in the school cafeteria, she had recently moved to C ollege Station. Mrs. Roberts was a member of the Broadway Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Ross E. Roberts.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Jean Bowman of Hilltop Lakes, Elaine Jean Roberts of Lubbock and Patricia Ann Wann of Winsboro; a son, James L. Roberts of College Station; four sisters, Lucilee Sheffield of Ballinger, Maxine Jamison of Clyde, Katie B. Joyner of Paint Rock and Vivian Chestenson of Berea, Ohio; another brother, Bert Herridge of Eastland; 13 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Buck Cochran
1916-2003
C.S. “Buck” Cochran, longtime Snyder resident, died Friday, March 14, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Cochran, 86, is set for 2 p.m. Sunday in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Lee Fiske, a nephew from Farmington, N.M., officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Born Aug. 29, 1916 in Powderly, Tex., to Jessie and Ann Cochran, he married Vivian Saffell on Aug. 17, 1935 in Hugo, Okla. The couple immediately began the lifetime responsibility of rearing her five young siblings, ranging in ages from one to 15 years.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 65th Combat Engineer Battalion.
The Cochrans moved to Snyder in 1949 and he worked as a residential and commercial contractor, building some of the first nursing homes in the area. He was a lifelong Republican.
Mr. Cochran had a lengthy career with Beverly Enterprises as a life safety supervisor. After retirement, he raised cattle.
Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Chris Cornett
1976-2003
Chris Cornett of San Diego, Calif., died Wednesday, March 12, in San Diego.
Funeral service for Mr. Cornett, 26, is set for 10 a.m. Monday in the Ozona First Baptist Church. Graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. Monday in the Gail Cemetery in Borden County.
Born April 17, 1976 in Post, he was a 1994 graduate of Ozona High School.
Survivors include his parents, Dale and Vickie Cornett of Ozona; a sister, Shelley Cornett of Ozona; a brother, Kevin Cornett of Mineral Wells; his grandparents, Red and Ginny Barkowsky of Lamesa; a great-grandmother, Clara Barkowsky of Lamesa; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Stanley Martin
1942-2003
Stanley Lowell Martin, an independent oil operator, died Saturday, March 1, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
A private service was conducted this morning with The Rev. Steve Highfield officiating. Interment was in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born March 22, 1942 in Snyder, he married Carolyn Beckham on May 29, 1965 in Snyder. Mr. Martin was a partner in Lynx Energy Co. and a self- employed pumper. He served on the Cogdell Memorial Hospital board from 1996-2001 and was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Martin of Snyder; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Trent and Annette Martin of Snyder and Reese Martin of Abilene; his father, T.L. Martin of Snyder; two sisters, Patsy Powell of Brownwood and Donna Nicholson of Snyder; his father-in-law, James Beckham of Snyder; and a grandson, Tanner Lowell Martin of Snyder.
Pallbearers were Carson Clayton, Darrell Carpenter, Jack Pevehouse, Larry Richardson, Perry Jamison and Bobby Highfield.
Lucille House
1916-2003
Lucille House, longtime Scurry County resident, died Sunday, March 2, in Harborview Nursing Home in League City after a lengthy illness.
Services for Mrs. House, 86, are pending at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Sept. 10, 1916 in Wood County, she moved to Scurry County in 1939. She married Travis House on Dec. 31, 1939 in Snyder and they farmed until his death in February 1981.
Survivors include a daughter, Eudera House of Houston; one sister, Lanell Davis of Riverside, Calif.; one grandson, Wendell Stanley of Houston; and one great-granddaughter, Haley Stanley of Houston.
Sonny Edgar
1933-2003
ALBANY -- Sonny Edgar, longtime area cowboy and ranch hand, died Friday, Feb. 28, in a Lubbock hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Edgar, 69, was set for 10 a.m. today in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Williams officiating. Burial was to follow in the Albany Cemetery.
Born Nov. 29, 1933 in Albany, he was a 1952 graduate of Albany High School, attended Texas Tech and was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He first worked for the Waggoner Ranch and then drove a cattle truck. He married Loraine Fancher on July 4, 1965 and they lived on several ranches – including Sammy Baugh’s Double Mountain Ranch, Millron, OS, Spires, Pitchfork, Cook and Nail. He spent his retirement at the Corriente Rope Co.
Survivors include his wife, Loraine of Albany; a daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and Damon Shipp of Gail; another daughter, Jeanie Edgar of Sherman; a sister, Patsy Cox; and two granddaughters.
Mrs. Stapleton
1913-2003
SAN ANGELO -- Funeral service for Bernice Irene Stapleton, the sister of R.C. Patton of Snyder, was held Friday in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel.
Mrs. Stapleton, 89, died Feb. 25 in Lubbock.
Born Oct. 12, 1913 in Rochester, she moved to Floydada in 1928 and graduated from Floydada High School in 1932.
Mrs. Stapleton was retired from Texas Utilities Company and was a member of the First Baptist Church of San Angelo. She had recently moved to Lubbock.
Survivors include one son, John Stapleton of San Antonio; a daughter, Sandra Waggoner of Lubbock; a sister, Nell McClung of Floydada; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Della Wade
1907-2003
LAMESA -- Della Minnie Wade, 95, died Friday, Feb. 28.
Funeral service for Mrs. Wade is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Lamesa Church of Christ with Mark Hackett, minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.
Born May 3, 1907 in Erath County, she married William Gay Wade on Feb. 10, 1924 in Snyder. He died in 1986.
Mrs. Wade was a homemaker and a member of the Lamesa Church of Christ.
Survivors include four daughters, Myrle Mitchell and Elnora Phillips, both of Lamesa, Iris Wade of Houston and Gaynelle Drum of Richmond, Ky.; a sister, Margaret of Bakersville, Calif.; a brother, Verna Lay of Dallas; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Carol Gruben

ROTAN -- Carol Ann Gruben, the mother of Greg Gruben of Snyder, died Saturday, March 1.
Services for Mrs. Gruben, 57, are pending at Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
