Ruby Bowman
1910-2003
MEADOW -- Ruby Bowman, the mother of Don Bowman of Hermleigh, died Tuesday, May 6, in Lubbock.
Service for Mrs. Bowman, 93, was set for 10 a.m. today in the Meadow First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Titus officiating. Interment was to follow in the Meadow Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.
Born Jan. 26, 1910 in O’Brien, she attended Brushey community school and married Jesse David “J.D.” Bowman on Jan. 3, 1939 in Goree. He died May 20, 1993.
A resident of Terry County since 1939, she and her husband farmed in the Meadow area. She was a Methodist and a member of the Meadow Quilting Club.
Survivors also include two daughters, Darlene Gary of O’Donnell and Anna Jean Caswell of Shallowater; a sister, Cora Williams of Stockton, Calif.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Myrle Mitchell
1929-2003
Myrle Mitchell, native of Scurry County, died Monday, May 5, in Lubbock.
Graveside service for Mrs. Mitchell was set for 2 p.m. today in Lamesa Memorial Park with the Rev. Robert Davis officiating.
Born Jan. 14, 1929 in Scurry County, she graduated from Klondike High School in 1945 and married J.C. Mitchell on Sept. 13, 1946 in Lovington, N.M.
Survivors include two sons, James Mitchell of Lamesa and Jerry Mitchell of Coahoma; a daughter, Laura Robason of Lamesa; three sisters, Gaynelle Drum of Richmond, Ky., Iris Wade of Houston and El Nora Phillips of Lamesa; and six grandchildren.
Betty Hatfield
1930-2003
Betty Hatfield of Snyder died Thursday, May 8, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Services for Mrs. Hatfield, 72, are pending at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born on Aug. 16, 1930, she married John Hatfield on Jan. 10, 1987 in Snyder. She was a nurse at the Lamesa Hospital for a number of years. Mrs. Hatfield was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Snyder.
Survivors include her husband, John Hatfield of Snyder; a daughter, Natosha Lee of Hopkinsville, Ky., a sister, Sadie Cress of Hobbs, N.M.; and three brothers, Jack Robinson of Mexico Beach, Fla., and Bill Robinson and Bobby Robinson, both of Newkirk, Okla.
Kathrin Ward
1927-2003
ELECTRA -- Kathrin Tice Ward, former Snyder resident, died Thursday, May 8, after a battle with cancer.
Service for Mrs. Ward was held Saturday in the First Baptist Church in Electra with Mr. Carl Wright officiating. Interment was to follow in the New Electra Cemetery with David Fortenbury of Irving officiating. Dutton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Born on Feb. 22, 1927 in Vernon, she moved to Electra as an infant. She married Marcus Ward on May 1, 1949 in Electra. She graduated from Electra High School in 1944 and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She began work with Magnolia Oil Co. in 1950 and worked in the Electra and Wichita Falls offices until 1966. She held the position of production clerk for Cobra Oil & Gas Corp. in Wichita Falls for 14½ years before returning to Mobil Oil Corp. She worked in Electra and Snyder offices as clerical administrator and retired in September 1991.
Survivors include her husband, Marcus Ward of Electra; a daughter, Pam of Irving; one brother, Tommy Fulton of Midland; and a granddaughter, Ashley Paige of Irving.
Alan Rios
1974-2003
MIDLAND -- Alan Ray Rios, a relative of several Scurry County residents, died Friday, April 11, in Midland Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Mass for Mr. Rios, 28, is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Fr. Arturo Pestin officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Born Aug. 22, 1974 in Midland, Mr. Rios was a 1992 Midland Lee High School graduate.
Survivors include his parents, Andy and Aurora Rios of Midland; a brother, Arthur Lynn Rios of Midland; a sister and brother-in-law, Amanda and Jarod McMorries of Parachute, Colo.; his grandparents, Nellie Rios of Snyder and Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Herrera of Hermleigh; his aunts and uncles, Sally and David Botts, Manny and Frances Rios, Josie and Jesse Hernandez, Bella and Lupe Lopez, all of Snyder; Tom Rios of Plano, Rick Rios of San Angelo and Rosie Vincent of Midland; Jesse and Anita Rios and Janie and Ted Mireles, all of Hermleigh, Martha and Bob Frick of Dunn, Maria and Abel Galaviz of Austin and Rosa Martinez of San Antonio; and 25 cousins.
Pallbearers will be Danny Duniven, Steven Viera, Marcos Almuina, Efrain Gonzales, Rick Rios and Keith Tiner.
A wake will be held at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Eva Lujan
1928-2003
COLORADO CITY - Eva Lujan, the mother of Rachel Bass of Snyder, died Sunday, April 13, in a Colorado City care center.
Funeral service for Mrs. Lujan, 75, is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Fr. David Espita officiating. Burial will follow in the Mitchell County Cemetery.
A rosary is set for 7 this evening at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Feb. 20, 1928 in Colorado City, she married Manuel Lujan in 1958 in Colorado City. He died in 1999.
A life-long resident of Colorado City, Mrs. Lujan was a dry cleaner and a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church.
Survivors also include two sons, Felix Lujan and WTC computer programmer Sam Lujan, both of Colorado City; a brother, Jesse Valdez of Odessa; six sisters, Juanita Diaz of Midland, Ruth Madrid of Andrews, Mary Rentz of Long Beach, Calif., Rosa Fierro of Amarillo, Teresa Garcia of Garden Grove, Calif., and Cecelia Wilson of Abilene.
Don Newsom
1926-2003
BIG SPRING -- Don R. Newsom, former owner of Don’s IGA in Snyder and Big Spring, died Friday, April 11.
Graveside service is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with Dr. William Fleming of Lubbock officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickel & Welch Funeral Home.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a 1949 graduate of Texas A&M University. He married Marilyn Keaton in 1949 and she died in 1992.
A resident of Big Spring for more than 50 years, he was in the grocery and restaurant business and was named Big Spring’s man of the year in 1992.
Mr. Newsom was a member of the local A&M Club and chaired the annual scholarship barbecue for 50 years. He was founder of the Toastmaster’s Club, a member of the chamber of commerce, Salvation Army and served on the board of regents for McMurry University for two years.
Survivors include two sons, Kent Newsom of Flower Mound and Dr. Gary Newsom of Lubbock; and five grandchildren.
Yvonne Allen

Lily Yvonne Farrar Allen, a former Snyder resident, died Saturday, April 12, in Denver, Colo.
Funeral service for Mrs. Allen, 55, is set for 1 p.m. Thursday in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Steve Highfield, associate pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dunn Cemetery.
Born Sept. 30, 1948, Mrs. Allen is survived by her mother, Lily Farrar of Abilene; a longtime companion, Ray Vigil of Colorado; a son, Jeffery Wortham of Colorado; two daughters, Glenda Arriola and Karen Wortham, both of Colorado; a brother, Steve Farrar of Andrews; two sisters, Susan Hall of Evant and Jean Farrar of Abilene; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Family visitation will be held from 5 to 7 this evening at Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Dexter Norwood

Gerald Dexter Norwood, 68, died Tuesday, April 15, at his home in Snyder.
Funeral service for Mr. Norwood is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Walter McCall officiating. Graveside service is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Slaters Chapel Cemetery south of Sweetwater.
Born March 6, 1935 in Hull, Mass., Mr. Norwood married Dorthey Hanks on Sept. 5, 1997 in Abilene. A resident of Snyder since 1989, Mr. Norwood was retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Dorthey Norwood of Snyder; his mother, Martha Norwood of Boothbay Harbor, Maine; three daughters, Brenda Sue Threadgill of Anton, Tammy Lynn Early of Sugar Land and Tracie Diane Norwood of Brewton, Ala.; a son, Gerald Brian Norwood of Humble; three stepsons, James Hanks of Irving, Richard Hanks of Abilene and Bob Hanks of Snyder; a stepdaughter, Suzy Hanks of Snyder; two brothers, Ralph Norwood of South Bristol, Maine and Robert Norwood of Boothbay Harbor; four sisters, Priscilla Reece of Hingham, Mass., Wanda Bridges of South Deerfield, Mass., Faye Anchor and Georgia Emerson, both of Boothbay Harbor; four grandchildren, Matthew and Jason Early of Sugar Land and Richard Hanks and Cathy Giron, both of Abilene.

Cody White
1982-2003
ROTAN – Cody Clay White, the son of Snyder Junior High teacher and coach Frances White, died Saturday, April 12, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Denton.
Funeral service for Mr. White, 20, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the First United Methodist Church with Rich Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
Born July 15, 1982 in Lubbock, Mr. White was reared in Lubbock except for his freshman and sophomore years when he lived in Rotan.
He attended Devry Institute in Dallas and South Plains College in Levelland before moving to Denton.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Edmonia Smith Baugh.
Survivors include his mother, Frances Baugh White of Rotan; his father, Bobby White of Lubbock; a brother, Jeremy D. White of Lubbock; his grandparents, Sam Baugh of Rotan and Charlie M. and Monte F. White of Hilltop Lake; an uncle and aunt, David and Jean Baugh of Snyder; and a cousin, Kari Greene of Snyder.
