Vergie Martin

COLORADO CITY -- Vergie Martin, a former Snyder resident, died Friday, Feb. 13, in a San Angelo hospital.
A memorial service for Mrs. Martin, 82, was set for 2 p.m. today in the Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kay Reed officiating.
Born Oct. 19, 1921 in Clarksville, she married Bill Martin on Oct. 7, 1937 in Dunn. He died Sept. 26, 2000.
Mrs. Martin moved from Snyder to Colorado City in 1990 and was a former custodial technician for Birdwell Oil Co. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Martin also was preceded in death by her parents, Milt and Vida Shoffner; a daughter, Patsy Geiger; a brother, Milton Shoffner; and two sisters, Loie Standefer and Irene Martin.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Buck and Nancy Martin of Somerville, Ala; a son-in-law and his wife, Dale and Leslie Geiger of Colorado City; a brother and sister-in-law, Odis and Paulyne Shoffner of Amarillo; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, I.E. and Roselle Martin of Snyder; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Luther Harmes

CROSS PLAINS -- Luther Glen Harmes, the father of Toni Shields of Snyder, died Friday, Feb. 13, in a Cross Plains hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Harmes, 70, was set for 10:30 a.m. today in the Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel. Ronnie White, assisted by Rex Boggs, was to officiate. Burial was to follow in the Cross Plains Cemetery.
Born Sept. 27, 1933 in Coleman, he was a graduate of Coleman High School and married Mardell Richards on Jan. 17, 1975 in Gatesville.
Mr. Harmes was a self-employed equipment dealer and drilling contract and was a member of Central Baptist Church in Coleman.
Survivors include his wife, Mardell Harmes of Cross Plains; another daughter, Connie Boggs of Eastland; three sons, Monty Richards of Cross Plains, Steve Richards of Winnemucca, Nev., and Gary Richards of Beeville; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Gene Hays
1924-2004
POST -- John Hays, a former resident of Snyder, died Friday, Feb. 13, in Golden Plains Care Center.
Funeral service for Mr. Hays, 80, is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Calvary Baptist Church in Post with the Rev. Les Atkins, pastor, officiating. Military graveside rites will follow in the Terrace Cemetery under the direction of Justice-Mason Funeral Home.
Born Jan. 13, 1924, he attended Post schools and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He married Deloris LaVerne Capps on March 17, 1956 in Carlsbad, N.M. She died March 6, 1993.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mattie Hays; and two sons, Marc and Rodney Hays.
Mr. Hays worked for his dad at the Corner Grocery, owned and operated the Long Branch, Genez Steak House and later worked for RJD Management. He then worked for Redman Redi-Mix for several years.
A longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church, he was a member of the VFW in Lubbock.
Survivors include four sons, Randell, Steve and Jim Hays, all of Lubbock, and Stephen Hays of Brownwood; two daughters, Joni Hays of Tahoka and Anita Nett of Berthold, N.D.; six brothers, Bill and Jackie Hays of Lubbock, Jerry and Pete Hays of Post and Herbie and Donnie Hays of Austin; three sisters, Liberty Anthony, Sis Gilmore and Reba Propst, all of Post; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Doris Sellars
1925-2004
Graveside service for Doris Marie Sellars was set for 3 p.m. today in the Snyder Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sellars, 78, died Friday, Feb. 13, in Midland.
Born Sept. 10, 1925 in Haskell, she was reared in Haskell and moved to Midland in 1956.
She married R.D. Sellars in 1959 and he died in 1983.
Mrs. Sellars worked at the Scharbauer Hotel as a beautician and then owned and operated Modern Food Store before working for the Midland Independent School District. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Moose Lodge.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Eunice Miller; and a brother, John Miller.
Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Hammond of Midland; four sons, Randy Sellars of Round Rock, Jerry Hunt, Bobby Hunt and Phillip Hunt, all of Midland; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Mary Pearson
1926-2004
Mary Francis Pearson, long-time Snyder resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Pearson, 77, is set for 10 a.m. Friday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry McAden, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in the Old Andrews Cemetery.
Born Aug. 25, 1926 in Snyder, she married James Elvis Pearson on July 27, 1946 in Snyder. He died in 1980.
A homemaker, Mrs. Pearson also was a former resident of Andrews and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
She also was preceded in death by a son, James Timothy Pearson; and three brothers, Jeff Rogers, Wade Rogers and Dock Rogers.
Survivors include two sons, Mark Pearson and his wife, Roseann, and Clark Pearson, all of Houston; a sister, Tommy McGinty of Snyder; six grandchildren, Heidi, Rachel, Erin, Megan and Leif Pearson; and one great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Sosa

Alexandra R. Sosa, 74, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, at her home in Snyder.
Rosary for Mrs. Sosa is set for 7 this evening in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Deacon Frank Ortegon will officiate.
Funeral Mass is set for 2 p.m. Friday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. Eduardo Teo officiating. Interment will follow in the Snyder Cemetery.
Born July 17, 1929 in Marion, Mrs. Sosa was preceded in death by her common-law husband, Juan Ramos; one son, Roy Sosa; and by four brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Eva and Albino Aguirre of Snyder and Ninfa and Felix Martinez of Hermleigh; six sons and five daughters-in-law, Cruz and Rachel Sosa of New Braunfels, Andrew and Anna Sosa, Tony and Dominga Sosa, Adam and Diana Sosa, David and Gracie Sosa, all of Snyder, and Flavio Sosa of San Antonio; three brothers, Timoteo Rodriguez of Shertz, Pascual Rodriguez of Lake McQueeney and Delfino Rodriguez of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Natividad Martinez of Loxahatchee, Fla., and Santos Coronado of Amarillo; 35 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Felix Martinez Jr., Andrew Sosa Jr., Cruz Sosa Jr., Christopher Lee Sosa, Adam Sosa Jr., Marcelino Agurrie, Joey Sosa and David Sosa Jr.
Melvin Howard
1920-2004
Melvin Howard, long-time Snyder resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Howard, 83, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Danny Williams and Walter McCall will officiate. Burial will follow in the Ira Cemetery.
Born April 24, 1920 in Lawrence, Ala., Mr. Howard was a U.S. Army veteran and had retired after 33 years with Monsanto as an operator.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra McClellan of Midland; three sons, Richard Howard of Granbury, Melvin Howard of Montgomery and Anthony Howard of DeSoto; a sister, Flo Rasco of Snyder; a special friend, Coy Dee Mebane of Snyder; six grandchildren, Wendy Hunter of Snyder, Kelly Stultz of San Angelo, Nicole Van Buren of Cypress, Michael Howard and Ashley Howard, both of Desoto, and Elizabeth Howard of Montgomery, Texas; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Hazel Burg

DUBLIN -- Hazel Murdoch Burg, the sister of Paul Gray and the aunt of Gordon Gray, both of Snyder, died Tuesday, Feb. 10 at her home in Dublin.
Funeral service for Mrs. Burg, 83, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Harrell Funeral Home Chapel with Steven Parker and James Cutrera officiating. Burial will follow in the DeLeon Cemetery.
Born Jan. 9, 1921 in Proctor, she married Marcus Burg on Jan. 25, 1990 in Stephenville.
A supervisor for the Green Thumb organization, she was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Dublin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rush and Gertie Gray; her first husband, R.G. Murdoch, in 1984; a daughter, Gerry Kay, on Oct. 2, 2003; four sisters; and one brother.
Survivors include her husband, Marcus Burg of Dublin; two sons, Ronald Murdoch of Abilene Johnny Gale Murdoch of Germany; two step-daughters, Kathy Stull of San Antonio and Joanie Burg of Washington, D.C.; two other brothers, R.O. Gray Jr. of Comanche and Jack Gray of Cisco; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Marie Stanfield

Reva Marie Stanfield died Friday, Feb. 6, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Stanfield, 77, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Miller Robinson, retired Baptist minister, will officiate.
Born Aug. 10, 1926 in Saline County, Mo., to William and Mary LaRose, she married Robert Lee “Bob” Stanfield on Aug. 20, 1948. They resided in Marshall, Mo., prior to making their home in Snyder where they were partners with John and Evelyn Thomas in the Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth and Hondo motorcycle dealership.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; one sister, Wilma Bryan; and two brothers, Warren and Paul LaRose.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Stanfield of Snyder; two sons, Bruce Stanfield of Snyder and Terry Stanfield of Houston; one stepdaughter, Sherry Twyman of Prairie Village, Kan.; one sister, Evelyn Thomas of Marshall, Mo., and formerly of Snyder; two brothers, Ralph LaRose of Independence, Mo., and Bill LaRose of Prairie Village, Kan.; two grandsons, Christopher and Jeffrey Stanfield, both of Snyder; one granddaughter, Terra Stanfield Seidel of Crawfordsville, Ind.; one stepgrandson, Matt Twyman, one step great-grandson, Luke Twyman, both of Des Peres, Mo.; and one step granddaughter, Emily Twyman of Prairie Village, Kan.
