Hilaria Almanza
1926-2000
ODESSA – Hilaria Medrano Almanza, a native of Fisher County, died Monday, Aug. 14, at her home in Odessa.
Mass for Mrs. Almanza, 73, was set for 10 a.m. today in the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with the Rev. James Bridges officiating. Burial was to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Odessa Funeral Home.
Born Dec. 6, 1926 in Hobbs, Tex., she graduated from Hobbs High School and attended Odessa College. She married Pedro Almanza on June 10, 1944 in Rotan.
Mrs. Almanza operated La Villita Café in downtown Odessa for 11 years, retiring in 1989. She was a member of the Medical Center Hospital auxiliary and taught Mexic an food cooking at Odessa College. Two weeks prior to her death, she participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Survivors include her husband, Pedro Almanza of Odessa; two sons, Pete Almanza and Benny Almanza, both of Odessa; three daughters, Linda Aguirre, Geneva Ybarra and Evelyn Garcia, all of Odessa; four bothers, Ramon Medrano of Odessa, Cayetano Medrano of Snyder, and Ben and Marcos Medrano, both of Hobbs; three sisters, Ruth Gonzales of Odessa, Pauline Gonzales of Stamford and Natividad Lopez of Abilene; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mattie Crook
1913-2000
Mattie Una Crook, a retired employee of the Monsanto Gasoline Plant, died Sunday, Dec. 24, in Baylor Hospital in Dallas following a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Crook, 87, is set for 10 a.m. Friday in the Colonial Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Miller Robinson, re-tired pastor, and Dr. Tom-my Culwell, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring with arrangements under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born June 24, 1913 in Big Spring, she was married to James P. Crook who died in 1953. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Sue Bowen, in 1993.
Mrs. Crook worked for Monsanto for 27 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Colonial Hill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Crook of Tyler; a daughter, Louise Davenport of Greenville; a sister, Frances Reeves of Corpus Christi; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Allen Bruton
1923-2000
Weston Allen Bruton of Fluvanna died Sunday, Dec. 24, while visiting his son in Bangkok, Thailand.
Services for Mr. Bruton, 77, are pending at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Nov. 19, 1923 in Temple, he married Ila Mae “Chigger” Jordan on June 24, 1952 in Lovington, N.M. She died June 20, 2000.
Mr. Bruton was a retired engineer for Baroid Services.
Survivors include a son, Greg Bruton of Bangkok; a daughter, Lana Renee Harden of Amarillo; a grandson, Cody Bruton of Bangkok; four sisters; and five brothers.
George Krejci
1918-2000
LUBBOCK – George A. Krejci, the brother of Bernice Kuss of Hermleigh, died Saturday, Dec. 23, in Covenant Medical Center-Lakeside in Lubbock.
Funeral service for Mr. Krejci, 82, was set for 4 p.m. today in the Sanders Memorial Chapel. Burial was to follow in the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
Born Feb. 19, 1918 in Holman, he had been a resident of Lubbock since 1932. He married Dorothy Roemisch on Oct. 22, 1947 in Hermleigh.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Krejci was retired from W.D. Wilkins Furniture and was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Krejci of Lubbock; two sons, Robert Krejci of Lubbock and Jerry Krejci of Olathe, Kan.; two daughters, Linda Null and Patricia Ratliff, both of Lubbock; a brother, Edwin Krejci of Florida; and 11 grandchildren.
Marilyn Chinn
1952-2000
COLORADO CITY – Marilyn Kay Chinn, a native of Mitchell County, died Thursday, Dec. 21, in an El Paso care center.
Funeral service for Mrs. Chinn, 48, was held Saturday in the 22nd and Austin St. Church of Christ with Kerry Cain, minister, officiating.
Burial followed in the Dunn Cemetery under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Jan. 8, 1952 in Abilene, she was reared in Mitchell County. She lived in Lubbock for 22 years and in El Paso for the past three years.
Mrs. Chinn was a representative for State Farm Insurance, a member of the Church of Christ and the Toastmasters.
Survivors include her parents, Ather and Mary Ellis of Colorado City; a son and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Kay Chinn of El Paso; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Fay Ellis of Amarillo and Jackie and Lisa Ellis of El Paso; and her former husband, John Chinn.
Ruth Moore

SEAGRAVES – Ruth Moore, the mother of Kenneth W. Herndon of Snyder, died Friday, Dec. 22, in Brownfield.
Funeral service for Mrs. Moore, 77, was set for 2 p.m. today in the Brownfield Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Adam Klein was to officiate, and burial was to follow in the Seagraves Cemetery.
Born Feb. 11, 1923 in Terry County, she was reared in the Gomez area and attended Brownfield public schools. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include a daughter, Faye Davis of Seagraves; two other sons, Hershel Thorne of Brownfield and Otis Lee Cabe of Eagle, Idaho; a brother, G.G. Cox of Brownfield; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Burton Tankersley
1916-2000
Daniel Burton Tankersley, longtime Snyder resident, died Monday, July 10, in Lakeside Covenant Hospital in Lubbock after a brief illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Tankersley, 83, is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Colonial Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Miller Robinson, retired minister, and Dr. Tommy Culwell, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Oct. 16, 1916 in Eastland, he married Mittie Williamson on Dec. 31, 1935 in Eastland.
Mr. Tankersley moved to Snyder in 1951 and was a charter member of Colonial Hill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. Mr. Tankersley was one of the first three deacons of the church. He retired from Chevron after 31 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Mittie Tankersley of Snyder; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Danny Tankersley of Snyder and Joel and Sallye Tankersley of Lubbock; a foster son and his wife, Royce and Margaret Burrows of Austin; a brother, G.W. Tankersley of Ranger; six grandchildren, Dean Tankersley of Boise, Idaho, Jeff Tankersley of Amarillo, Krista Tankersley of Dallas, Dawn Garza of Lubbock and Tammy Price of Midland; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends are contributing to the American Diabetes Association, 2209 Big Spring, Suite J. in Midland or to the American Cancer Society, 1901 26th Street in Snyder.

Martha Johnson
1925-2000
Martha Marie Johnson, a resident of Hermleigh for the past three years, died Sunday, July 9, in Covenant Medical Center Lakeside in Lubbock.
Graveside service for Mrs. Johnson, 75, was set for 4 p.m. today in the Englewood Cemetery in Slaton. Cleve Kerby was to officiate.
Born June 9, 1925 in Missoula, Mont., she graduated from high school in Spokane, Wash. She married James Johnson on Aug. 9, 1978 in Las Vegas.
Mrs. Johnson lived in Hereford before moving to Hermleigh in 1997.
Survivors include her husband, James Johnson of Hermleigh; a son, Mike Harvey of Hereford; three daughters, Susan Ingalls of Slaton, Katherine Faneli of Raton, N.M., and Patricia Blake of Oak Harbor, Wash.; 13 grandchildren, including Melodie Smith of Hermleigh; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Ollie Bruton
1917-2000
Ollie A. Bruton Jr., a former Snyder businessman, died Monday, July 10, in Lubbock’s Covenant Hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Bruton, 82, was set for 2 p.m. today in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with Homer Anderson, minister of the 37th Street Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was to follow in the Snyder Cemetery.
Born Sept. 10, 1917 in Comanche, he married Luna Maude Gore on May 17, 1936 in Lubbock.
Mr. Bruton moved to Snyder in 1949 and owned and operated Bruton Jewelers on the east side of the Snyder square from 1949 until his retirement in 1978.
During that period, Midwest Electric Cooperative established an office in the jewelry store and the Brutons served as clerks.
After their retirement from the jewelry business, Mr. and Mrs. Bruton continued as clerks for Midwest Electric, now Big Country Electric Cooperative.
While in Snyder, Mr. Bruton was a member of the 37th Street Church of Christ. They moved to Lubbock eight years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Luna Maude Bruton of Lubbock; a son, Gene Bruton of Dallas; a daughter, Pat Stack of Arlington; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
