Mrs. Henderson
1915-2000
Frankie Henderson, longtime Snyder resident, died Monday, Sept. 4, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital.
Funeral srvice for Mrs. Henderson, 84, is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday in Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Dan Crawford, pastor of Victory Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Born on Nov. 20, 1915 in Drennon, Ky., she married J.D. Henderson on May 3, 1953. Mrs. Henderson, a resident of Snyder for 48 years, was a housewife and a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, J.D. Henderson of Snyder, a son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Dolores Jones of Snyder; three granddaughters, Kathy Vickers and her husband, Dane, of Post, Jeannie Kashirin and her husband, Sasha, of Lubbock, and Kelly Jones of Dallas; a great-grandson, Jarrett Vickers of Post; and two great-granddaughters, Rachel Hoblit and Martha Hoblit, both of Corpus Christi.
Jack Cross
1920-2000
AMARILLO -- Julius Selwin “Jack” Cross, the brother of two Snyder residents, died Sunday, Sept. 3.
Funeral service for Mr. Cross, 80, is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Trinity Baptist Church with Dr. David L. Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Born in Eastland, Mr. Cross served in the military during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He received the Purple Heart and retired from the Army in 1968.
A member of the Trinity Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge, Mr. Cross moved to Amarillo from Hereford in 1975.
He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Michael Cross, in 1952; and by a daughter, LaJuanda Cross, in 1996.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche Cross of Amarillo; three sisters, Rosa Starnes of Snyder, Norene Murphy of Garland and Bennie Curfew of Crane; four brothers, Vernon Cross of Snyder, Ronald Cross of Big Spring, Glen Cross and H.T. Cross, both of Midland.
Vera Dawson
1918-2000
GATESVILLE – Vera Dawson, the sister of Joyce Parker of Snyder, died Sunday, Sept. 3, in a Houston hospital.
Funeral service for Mrs. Dawson, 81, is set for 11 a.m. Thursday in the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.L. Whitworth officiating. Burial will follow in the Restland Cemetery.
Born Sept. 13, 1918 in Mound, Tex., she was reared in Central Texas and married Jack Dawson on May 28, 1938.
She lived in Oglesby, Oklahoma City, McGregor and Moody. The Dawsons owned and operated restaurants in McGregor and Moody for many years.
She was a member of the Hilltop Christian Fellowship Church in Waco.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Dawson of Moody; a son, Jack O. Dawson Jr. of Sugar Land; a daughter, Joyce Sparks of Austin; four other sisters, Marie McFadden of McGregor, Pearl Jones of Mound, Euna Owens of Lake Belton and Margie Parkinson of San Angelo; two brothers, Carold Kinsey of San Antonio and Luther Kinsey of Mineral Wells; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
George Phillips
1934-2000
Funeral service for George Phillips, 65, is set for 2 p.m. Friday in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel.
Officiating will be the Revs. Bobbie Woods, minister of the Church of God; Vernon Groce, Mr. Phillips’ great-nephew; and Raymond Bugg, Hospice chaplain of Odessa. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Phillips, a resident of Snyder for the past three years, died Monday, Sept. 4, at his sister’s home in Snyder following a brief battle with cancer.
Born Oct. 31, 1934 in Archer City, he was an U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Phillips of Hesperia, Calif.; five daughters, Patty Wilcox of Hesperia, Susan Crosby and Rebecca Kirby, both of Snyder, and Debbie Phillips and Nancy Leffers, both of Soda Springs, Idaho; a son, William George Phillips of Santana, Calif.; three sisters, Stella Bailey and Johnnie Pyburn, both of Snyder, and Ruth Tillman of Downey, Calif.; a brother, Marvin Holmes of Edmond, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; and numerous aunts and uncles of Snyder and Graham; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother.
Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Hortencia Puente
1940-2000
Hortencia “Candy” Puente, the sister of Angelia Alaniz of Hermleigh, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, in Lubbock’s University Medical Center.
Rosary for Mrs. Puente, 60, is set for 7 p.m. today in the Calvillo Funeral Home Chapel.
Mass for Mrs. Puente will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Lubbock with the Rev. Tim Judd officiating. Burial will follow in the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
Born April 18, 1940 in Karnes City, she married Onesimo Puente in 1970 in Lubbock. He died in 1995.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Martin Trevino, in 1990.
Survivors include two daughters, Angelica Trevino and Barbara “Gigi” Puente, both of Lubbock; four brothers, Agapito Gonzales of Wellington, Ralph Gonzales of Bakersfield, Calif., Domingo Gonzales of Brownwood and Alejandro Gonzales of Lubbock; two other sisters, Minnie Gonzales and Manuela Castillo, both of Lubbock; and five grandchildren.
Joe Medford
1909-2000
Joe Medford, the grandfather of Jenny Pinson of Snyder, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, in Shannon Medical Center.
Graveside service for Mr. Medford, 91, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa.
Born March 22, 1909 in Anson, he married Frances Hutchinson on Sept. 2, 1937 in Paris, Tex.
Mr. Medford moved to Odessa in 1939 and was employed by West Texas Rig Co. and by McCain Rig Co. He was a member of the Odessa First Baptist Church for 56 years.
Mr. Medford and his wife moved to San Angelo in 1995. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Ruth Medford; two brothers, Gervaise Medford and Perry Medford; and two sisters, Louise Hardeman and Opal Hobbs.
Survivors include two daughters, Jo Ann Noble of San Angelo and Janette Gardner of Lawton, Okla.; a sister, Imogene Teague of Lamesa; two brothers, Seldon Medford of Clarksville and Jim Medford of Kerrville; three other grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, including Wade Pinson, Garrett Pinson and Reid Pinson, all of Snyder.
Howard Ware
1934-2000
Howard Lloyd Ware, the brother of B.L. Smith of Snyder, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, at his home in Sweetwater.
Funeral service for Mr. Ware, 66, is set for 10 a.m. Friday in the Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel. Another brother, Dowling Ware of Houston, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Sweetwater Cemetery.
Born Feb. 2, 1934 in Hamlin, Mr. Ware is survived by three sons, Dudley Ware of Sweetwater, Pat Ware of Stephenville and James Ware of Astoria, Ore.; two other brothers, Jim Ware and Bill Ware, both of Dallas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles Kornegay
1928-2000
Charles Edward Kornegay, brother of Harold Kornegay of Snyder, died Thursday, Sept. 7, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Kornegay, 71, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Pipeline Road Church of Christ in Hurst. Burial will follow in Bluebonnett Hills Memorial Park.
Born Sept. 20, 1928 in Milam County, he married Betty Jackson of Roscoe in 1950. They recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. Kornegay served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later graduated from Texas Christian University. He was active in community affairs including coaching youth baseball. Mr. Kornegay was a retired Winn Dixie Scanning Coordinator of Texas Division.
He was pre ceded in death by a son, David Charles Kornegay; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kornegay of Gause.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Kornegay of Hurst; a daughter and son-in-law, Karla and Lt. Col. Gilbert Teague of Harvard, Ill.; two sisters, Martha Stevenson and Gladys Keith; and two other brothers, Arnold Kornegay and Cecil Kornegay; and four grandchildren.
Memorial may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Leslie Gill
1932-2000
Leslie (Sonny) Gill of Snyder died Friday, Sept. 8, in Valley Fair Lodge in Colorado City following a lengthy illness.
Service for Mr. Gill, 68, is set for 10 a.m. Monday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Clifton Griffith, pastor of Union Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Snyder Cemetery.
Born July 21, 1932 in Bell County, he married Mavis Leonard on Dec. 17, 1963 in Colorado City. She died Aug. 6, 1987. Mr. Gill and his family moved to the Snyder area in 1941. He had also lived in the Fluvanna area. Mr. Gill was a truck driver and was employed at Grimmett Bros. for a number of years.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.O. Gill, and a brother, James Gill, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Dorothy Gill of Snyder; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Cherry and Clint Hembree, Louise and Harvey Stevenson and Bessie McCauley, all of Snyder; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
