Letha Hollis
1915-2001
CRANE – Letha Hollis, a former resident of Snyder, died Friday, Nov. 30, in Fairfax, Va., after a long illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Hollis, 86, is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Baker, pastor of the Crane First Baptist Church, officiating.
Born July 28, 1915 in Clairemont, she moved to Crane with her family at an early age. She married T.J. “Jimmy” Hollis in 1935. He preceded her in death as did her parents, Billy and Prudy Chaffin; and three brothers, Joe, Ed and Jack Chaffin.
She lived in Midland for the past 35 years, but previously had lived in Crane, Big Lake, Snyder, Lovington, N.M. and Hobbs, N.M.
Survivors include a son, Allan Hollis of McLean, Va.; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
Jan Lanier
1946-2001
Janell Martin “Jan” Lanier of Snyder died Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
Funeral service for Mrs. Lanier, 55, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel in Sweetwater with the Rev. Lance May officiating. Burial will follow in the Decker Cemetery.
Born Oct. 16, 1946 in Santa Anna, she was a 1965 graduate of Sweetwater High School and married Bob Lanier in 1975 in Snyder.
A Baptist, Mrs. Lanier had worked as a beautician in both Sweetwater and Snyder before becoming a supervisor for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice distribution center in Snyder for eight years.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Martin, on March 5, 1999.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Lanier of Snyder; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Tyfani Lanier of Amarillo; a sister, Linda Fry of Amarillo; a brother, Greg Martin of Dallas; her father, Melvin Martin of Sweetwater; a stepdaughter, Cindy Hendley of Eula; a son-in-law, Scott Hend ley of Potosi; two grandsons, Cody Lanier and Justin Lanier of Amarillo; two step-grandchildren, Shay Hendley and Sloan Hendley of Eula; and two nieces, Pamela Ludlum of Sweetwater and Janet Watson of Amarillo.
Family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McCoy Funeral Home.
Thelma March
1926-2001
Thelma F. March, 75, died Sunday, Dec. 9, at her residence.
Funeral service was set for 1 p.m. today at Shannon Rufe Snow Drive Funeral Chapel.
Born Jan. 3, 1926 in Centralia, Ill., she was preceded in death by her husband, John March, in 1985.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Amy Summerville of Cleburne; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and David Yonker of North Richland Hills; a niece and her husband, Greta and Richard Sharp; a nephew and his wife, John Dee and Marie Martin; and several cousins in Snyder.
Margry Sorrells
1922-2001
Margry Sorrells, a Snyder native, died this morning in August Health Center in Lubbock after a lengthy illness.
Services for Mrs. Sorrells, 79, are pending at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sorrells was born May 1, 1922 in Snyder and married Vollie E. Sorrells on July 9, 1943 in Long Beach, Calif. She moved to Snyder from Big Spring in June, 1981. Mrs. Sorrells was a homemaker and a member of 37th Street Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Myrtle Brown.
Survivors include her husband, Vollie E. Sorrells of Snyder; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Mike Ezzell of Austin; and two grandchildren, Michael Ezzell of Stillwater, Okla., and Marla Warren of Galveston.
Claudia Day
1927-2001
Claudia Day of Snyder died Wednesday, Dec. 19, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Graveside service for Mrs. Day, 74, is set for 2 p.m. Friday in the Slaters Chapel Cemetery in Nolan County. Arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born June 23, 1927 in Winters, she married Velta J. Day on Dec. 18, 1947 in Winters.
A homemaker, she was a longtime member of 4th & Elm Street Church of Christ in Sweetwater. After living in Sweetwater for many years, she moved to Snyder last December.
Her parents, William H. and Cora Hubach Hord; and a sister, Corine Oliver, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Velta J. Day of Snyder; one daughter, Velma Jean Ward of Snyder; one son and daughter-in-law, Velta James and Jimmie Day of Snyder; a sister, Barbara Gray of Winters; one brother, Rance Hord of Sterling City; four grandchildren, Michael Allen Ward and Melissa Jean Wells, both of Snyder, Jodi Latrisha Wall and Jennifer Robin Phillips, both of Amarillo; and four great-grandchildren, Christopher Ward, Hunter Ward, Amanda Wells and Chase Gaines.
Glenda Hewitt
1949-2001
POST – Glenda Hewitt, the sister of Bud Sparlin of Snyder, died Tuesday, Dec. 25.
Funeral service for Mrs. Hewitt, 52, is set for 3 p.m. Friday in the Graham Chapel Church of Christ with David Joyner and Bobby Cowdrey officiating.
Burial will follow in Terrace Cemetery under the direction of Justice-Mason Funeral Home.
Born June 24, 1949 in Lubbock, her family lived in Smyer and she attended school at Graham Chapel, Lubbock, Tulia and Odessa. She moved to Post in 1994.
A member of the Graham Chapel Church of Christ, she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW for 20 years.
A son, Bill Hewitt, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Nicky Hewitt and Brent Hewitt, both of Post; her mother, JoElla Sparlin of Post; another brother, David Sparlin of Post; and two grandchildren.
Autris Thompson
1934-2001
Autris Thompson, a resident of Snyder for the past 10 years, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Thompson, 66, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stanley Peppers officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Born June 6, 1934 in Georgetown, he was a longtime resident of Dallas and worked for a firm electroplating bumpers. He moved to Snyder in 1990 after he was paralyzed in a fall at his home in Dallas.
Survivors include two stepchildren, Ruby Potts of Duncanville and Robert Riley of Fort Worth; a sister, Ophelia Braziel of Snyder; two brothers, A.C. Thompson and Willie Thompson, both of Snyder; three step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.
Rev. Virgil Mott
1905-2001
The Rev. Robert Virgil Mott, a retired Baptist minister whose Sunday morning radio program spanned more than 30 years, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, in Snyder Healthcare Center after a lengthy illness.
Memorial service for Rev. Mott, 95, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Colonial Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Miller Robinson, retired pastor, and Dr. Tommy Culwell, pastor, will officiate. The memorial service and cremation are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Aug. 31, 1905 in Rio, Miss., he married Barbara Chapman in June, 1931 in Fort Worth.
Rev. Mott moved to Snyder from Pampa in 1958 where he had served as minister of the music for the First Baptist Church. Rev. Mott was well known for his deep singing and speaking voice and for playing the harmonica each Sunday morning on KSNY Radio.
Not only was his booming bass voice distinctive, but so was his trademark bow tie.
From 1958-64, Rev. Mott served as minister of music and education director for the First Baptist Church. From 1964-81, he was pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church. He also served as choir director of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
From 1981-83, he was minister of senior adults for Colonial Hill Baptist Church. In 1986, he became minister of music with Ave. D Baptist Church.
A member of the Colonial Hill Baptist Church, Rev. Mott was a member of the Snyder Ministerial Alliance and a former member of the Snyder Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Mott.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Mott of Snyder; a daughter, Barbara Kathleen Kaun of Houston; a son, Chapman Mott of Houston; a brother, Lonnie James Mott of Hattiesburg, Miss.; and a granddaughter, Arabella Kaun of Houston.
In lieu of flowers, the Mott family welcomes contributions to the Snyder Community Music Scholarship Fund to assist in the musical education of Snyder’s youth. The fund will be administered by Colonial Hill Baptist Church, under the direction of Triesta Lilly, Lynn Baldwin and Kathy Mott Kaun. Contributions should be made payable to Snyder Community Music Scholarship Fund.
Elizabeth Smith
1922-2001
Sarah Elizabeth Smith died Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, Colo.
Service for Mrs. Smith, 78, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mullare-Murphy Funeral Chapel in Trinidad. Interment is planned in a private service at the family plot on the Smith Ranch.
Born on Oct. 15, 1922 in Snyder to R. Clyde and Bessie Miller, she grew up on the Miller Ranch in Borden County, graduated from Fluvanna High School and attended Texas Tech University.
A champion cowgirl when young, she was one of the top 10 Rodeo Cowgirls in Texas selected to represent Texas at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1939. Her love of ranching life continued and she was nominated for the Cowgirl Hall of Fame.
She married Excel Smith in 1942 and they moved to Trinchera, Colo., after Smith’s military service in World War II. She lived on the Smith Ranch in Trinchera for the next 56 years. Known for her horsemanship skills and being a dedicated ranch wife, she was a Master Farm Homemaker and was active in Branson-Trinchera Home Extension Club.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Richard Clinton Miller and James Richard Miller.
Survivors include her husband, Excel Smith, and her son and daughter-in-law. Geral and Jamie Marie Smith, of Trinchera; her daughter, and son-in-law, Jo Beth and Wayne Steward of Paradise; two brothers and their wives, Ralph and Dewey Fay Miller of Fluvanna and Riley and Mary Miller of Justiceburg; three granddaughters Mary Bess Murphy of Dalhart and her husband, Thad, Jonnalea Tortorelli of Trinidad and her husband, Joel, and Sarah Philena Steward of Paradise; two grandsons, David Smith of Amarillo, and Joel Smith of Trinchera and his wife, Melissa.
Pallbearers will be David Smith, Joel Smith, Gary Waller, Henry Brown, Rolf Droll and Laddie Waller Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Shorty Vigil, George Strasia, Johnny Strasia, Charlie Strasia, Dr. Francis Visconti, Louie Cusimano, John A. Stavely, Don McClelland, Wayne Survant, C.T. Everett, Doug McGlaun and Murph Hudson.
