Vincent Brown
1918-2001
Vincent O. Brown, brother-in-law of Frank Miller of Snyder, died Friday, March 9, in San Antonio.
Funeral service for Mr. Brown, 82, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Coker United Methodist Church. The Rev. John Gibbs will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Sunset Funeral Home in San Angelo is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Brown was born Sept. 9, 1918 in Dilley. He retired after 20 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, and later retired after 20 years as a teacher.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Julia Brown; a son, Michael Brown and his wife, Marilyn; a daughter, Suzanne Shook; two sisters, Annie J. Roberts and Cecil Staudt; all are of San Antonio; and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to Coker United Methodist Church or to VITAS Hospice.
Clifford Mitchell
1945-2001
Clifford Odiss Mitchell, 56, died Sunday night at his home.
Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Weatherbee Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Brigham officiating. Burial will be Friday at the Anson Cemetery.
Mr. Clifford was the father of Tim Mitchell and Bryant Mitchell, and the grandfather of Ryan, Brittany, Samantha and Bryana Mitchell, all of Snyder.
He was born on Jan. 25, 1945 to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Mitchell in Stamford. He married Cecilia Mitchell on Nov. 15, 1993 in Rotan. He had been a prison guard at the Price Daniel Unit for seven years. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John Mitchell, and his first wife, Wanda Sue Thomas Mitchell, in 1983.
He is survived by his second wife, Cecelia Mitchell; one daughter, Tonya L. Reynolds of Dyess AFB; three sisters, Martha Brockman of Stamford, Patsy Branch of Hamlin, Joyce May of Abilene; two other grandchildren, Tara Offield of Hamlin, Kyrie Offield of Dyess AFB; five step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Dora Silva
1949-2001
Dora G. Hernandez Silva, a former resident of Snyder, died Sunday, March 11, at her home in Lubbock after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Silva, 51, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with Daniel G. Hernandez, a son-in-law from Snyder, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Born July 1, 1949 in Harlingen, she married Guadalupe Silva Jr. on July 29, 2000.
A resident of Snyder for 16 years, she had moved to Lubbock last year. She was a member of the Primera Bautista in Snyder and the Iglesia Bautista Templo in Lubbock.
Survivors include her husband, Guadalupe Silva of Lubbock; a son, Kevin Alejandro of Los Angeles; two daughters, Tanya Hernandez of Snyder and Kimberly McGraw of Lubbock; two stepdaughters, Vicky Silva and Bianca Nicole Silva, both of Snyder; a stepmother, Juanita Alejandro of Combes, Tex.; four brothers, Misael Alejandro of Combes, Alex Alejandro, Ernie Alejandro and Joe Alejandro, all of Harlingen; a sister, Gloria Garcia of San Antonio; and one grandson, Joseph Hernandez of Snyder.
A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Sue Kelley
1906-2001
Sue Kelley, 94, died Tuesday, March 13, in Snyder Oaks Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Kelly is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. James Merrell, retired Methodist minister, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Jayton Cemetery.
Born Dec. 17, 1906, she was married to Claude Ray Kelly who preceded her in death. She was a Methodist.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Claudine Peebles; five brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Pat Kelley of Snyder; two daughters and a son-in-law, Pat Watkins of Seguin and Rhoda and Lou Rehders of Bracketville; two sisters, Lucille Harrison of Llano and Katie Johnston of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Billie Lindsey
1943-2001
Billie Ruth Lindsey, a native of Scurry County, died Saturday, March 10, in a Jacksonville hospital.
Funeral service for Mrs. Lindsey, 58, is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Thompson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the Jarratt Cemetery.
Born Feb. 28, 1943 in Hermleigh, she was a former licensed vocational nurse at Gardendale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jacksonville.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Louise Ervin.
Survivors include her father, Willard Ervin of Snyder; two sons, Michael Jason Way of Mansfield and Daniel Lee Way of Glendale, Ariz.; a daughter, Pamela Ronnell Graham of Conroe; a brother, Walter Jack Ervin of Abilene; one step- brother; three step sisters; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth Elliott
1900-2001
COLORADO CITY – Elizabeth Elliott, a Mitchell County resident since 1920, died Monday, March 12, in a Colorado City care center.
Funeral service for Mrs. Elliott, 101, is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kay Reed officiating. Burial will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Feb. 12, 1900 in Landeersville, Ala., she married Lewis B. Elliott on June 22, 1919 in Loraine. He died Feb. 10, 2001.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Brush and Palette Club and past president of the Social Order of the Beauceants. She was past queen of the Daughters of the Nile and held local and district offices in the United Methodist Women.
Survivors include three daughters, Frances Godwin and Ruth Cooper, both of Colorado City, and Esther Brewer of Carrollton; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Robert Sharp
1946-2001
Funeral service for Robert “Bob” Edward Sharp is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Mickey O’Briant, a cousin who is a minister in Sweetwater, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Roby Cemetery.
Mr. Sharp, 54, died Wednesday, March 14, at his home in Snyder following a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 7, 1946 in Rotan, Mr. Sharp was a retired welder and a Baptist.
Survivors include two sisters, Rose Mary Jones of Snyder and Gloria Jean Sain of Freeport; three nieces; a nephew; and several aunts and uncles.
Family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 this evening at Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Marley Cribbs
1938-2001
THROCKMORTON – Marley J. Cribbs, the stepfather of Butch Thurmon of Snyder, died Monday, March 12, in San Diego, Calif.
Funeral service for Mr. Cribbs, 62, was set for 10 a.m. today in the Merriman-Archer Funeral Home Chapel with Silas Short officiating. Burial was to follow in the Throckmorton Cemetery.
Born Oct. 1, 1938 in Olney, Mr. Cribbs was a lifelong resident of Throckmorton County and was a U.S. Navy veteran. A truck driver for 20 years, he was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Marley M. Cribbs of Colorado City; another stepson, Billy Joe Thurmon of Colorado City; his mother, Lorene Cribbs of Throckmorton; a sister, Jane Cook of Throckmorton; a brother, Jody Cribbs of Center Point; and six stepgrandchildren.
Oliva Moreno
1952-2001
BIG SPRING – Olivia “Bimbo” Moreno, the sister of Elvira Castillo of Hermleigh, died Wednesday, March 14, at her home in Big Spring.
A vigil service for Miss Moreno, 48, is set for 7 this evening at the Myers & Smith Funeral Home Chapel.
Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Jeremiah McCarthy officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity Memorial Park.
Born April 16, 1952 in Big Spring, she attended Borden County School in Gail and Coahoma High School. She had worked for West Texas Security Systems and Upjohn’s before caring full-time for her late parents, Bill and Christine Moreno.
Survivors include four other sisters, Terrie Wilson of Junction City, Kan., Carmen Brooks and Hope Lopez, both of Big Spring and Gloria Mirelez of St. George, Kan.; three brothers, Thomas Moreno and Ernest Moreno, both of Big Spring, and Willie Moreno of Justiceburg.
The family suggests memorial to the American Cancer Society or to the Community Care Hospice.
Lelia Burrow
1911-2001
Lelia Beth Burrow of Kingston, Okla., former Snyder resident, died Thursday, March 15, in the Madill Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Graveside service for Mrs. Burrow, 89, is set for 2 p.m. Monday in the Hillside Memorial Gardens in Snyder. Services are under the direction of Watts Funeral Home of Madill, Okla.
Born on Oct. 8, 1911 in Jacksonville, Tex., Mrs. Burrow was reared in Snyder then moved to Kingston where she lived the rest of her life. She married Modrell Oren Burrow on Dec. 21, 1929 in Snyder. He preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1973. She was a homemaker.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Delbert O. Burrow, and her parents, John Ficher and Mattie Calwell.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Gailia and Bob Foster of Kingston; a sister, Marie Moore of Snyder; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
