Lee Craighead
1915-2002
COLORADO CITY – Lee Roy Craighead, the father of Virginia Bloom of Snyder, died this morning in Kristi Lee Manor.
Services for Mr. Craighead, 86, are pending at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Mr. Craighead was retired from the Texas Electric power plant in Colorado City.
Clyde Foster
1924-2002
ODESSA – Clyde Foster Sr., the grandfather of Tess Mabry of Snyder, died Saturday, Jan. 12, at his home in Weatherford.
Funeral service for Mr. Foster, 77, is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Kinney Mabry, youth minister of the 37th Street Church of Christ in Snyder, officiating.
Born Feb. 17, 1924 in Memphis, Tenn., he was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
A retired boilermaker for the Illinois Central Railroad, he also retired from Campbell Health Systems in 1989, having worked in the maintenance department. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post No. 7835 which he founded in Granbury in 1972.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Stoney Justin Palmer in 1983, and Ricky Shane Palmer in 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Lydia Foster of Weatherford; a daughter, Sandra Palmer of Weatherford; three sons, Billy Beall of Weatherford, Clyde Foster Jr. of Abilene and Rocky Foster of Evanston, Wyo.; a sister, Elsie Rovilo of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Melton Foster of Arkansas; six other grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Anita Pickle
1938-2002
TYLER – Anita Wedgeworth Pickle, a native of Snyder, died Jan. 1 in Tyler.
Funeral service for Mrs. Pickle, 63, was held Jan. 5 in the First Christian Church and burial followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Born Feb. 11, 1938 in Snyder, she was the daughter of the late E.O. and Doris Wedgeworth. Mr. Wedgeworth was the former superintendent of schools at Fluvanna and later served as Snyder chamber of commerce manager.
A graduate of Stephen F. Austin University, Mrs. Pickle was a Tyler school teacher and a member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Merwyn Pickle of Tyler; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Joe Tanner of Fort Worth; and one granddaughter.
Lee Roy Craighead

Funeral service for Mr. Craighead, 83, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday in the Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Travis Monday officiating.
Graveside service is set for 3 p.m. Thursday in the Murray Cemetery in Carbon, Tex.
Born Nov. 28, 1918 in Sipe Springs, he married Ramon Nell Harris on April 9, 1938 in Palo Pinto County. She died May 25, 1988.
A resident of Colorado City since 1951, Mr. Craighead was retired from the TXU Morgan Creek power plant and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors also include two sons, Roy Craighead of Colorado City and Clinton Craighead of Olden; a brother, S.L. Craighead of Odessa; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Rev. Cates
1920-2002
ABILENE – The Rev. T. Gerald Cates, founding pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Snyder, died Monday, Jan. 14.
Funeral service for Rev. Cates, 81, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the Abilene Bible Church with the Rev. Greg Long officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Born in Graham, N.C. in 1920, he graduated from Graham High School and was a graduate of the Baptist Bible Institute in Fort Worth.
He married Emma Jeanette Grantham in 1942 and moved to San Antonio where he was pastor of the Huisache Avenue Baptist Church until 1948.
In 1950, Rev. Cates became pastor of the newly-founded Calvary Baptist Church in Snyder. He served in Snyder for nine years before moving to San Angelo. A year later, he became pastor of the Highland Park Baptist Church in Abilene, retiring in 1980. At the time of his death, he was pastor emeritus of the Calvary Baptist Church in Abilene.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Cates of Abilene; three sons, Steve Cates and Jonny Cates of Abilene and Gerry Cates of Albany; a brother, L.G. Cates of Burlington, N.C.; and three granddaughters.
J.B. Bowling
1924-2002
POSEY, Calif. -- J.B. Bowling, a native of Hermleigh, died Jan. 8 in Hanford Hospital in California after a brief illness.
Graveside service for Mr. Bowling, 77, will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday in the Blue Mountain Cemetery in Woody, Calif.
Born Oct. 25, 1924 in Scurry County, he married Dorothy Reilly on Oct. 23, 1959 in San Diego, Calif. She preceded him in death.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Nellie Bly Bowling; a brother, Jack Bowling; a sister, Darlene Bowling; and a stepson, Tommy Cooper.
Mr. Bowling was reared in Fluvanna and Snyder and was retired from the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include a son, Ron Bowling of St. Cloud, Fla.; two daughters, Darlene Porter of Orlando, Fla., and Marcia Madden of Posey; three stepsons, David and Robert Cooper of San Diego and Bill Cooper of Portland, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Ellis Tidmore
1910-2002
ATHENS – Ellis E. Tidmore, grandfather of Phyllis “Pete” Haley of Snyder, died Sunday, Jan. 20, in an Athens nursing home.
Funeral service for Mr. Tidmore, 91, is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. James F. Bond officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park under the direction of Carroll-Hehr Funeral Home.
Born July 12, 1910 in Van Zandt County, he had formerly lived in Lubbock for 15 years where he was in the home building business.
Mr. Tidmore returned to Athens in 1965 and later moved to Chandler where he was active in the First Baptist Church and Chandler Masonic Lodge. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was recognized for 50 years of service in 1995. Upon returning to Athens, he was a member of First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howell Clifford and Johnnie O. Stover Tidmore; two wives, Murle Tidmore in 1973 and Leida Tidmore in 2001; a daughter, Darlene Pickard in 1991; a son Rayford Tidmore in 1997; two brothers, Elmo and Maynard Tidmore; and a sister, Earlene Palmer.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Janie Tidmore of Athens; a stepdaughter, Tiajuana Padon of Arlington; three brothers, D.J. Tidmore and Will Tidmore, both of Tyler, and C.W. Tidmore of Athens; three sisters, Edna Devries of Humble, Frances Fulgham of Star Harbor and Maxie Barton of Athens; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Walter Chaney
1926-2002
Walter Daniel Chaney, 75, of Snyder died at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Snyder Oaks Care Center after a lengthy illness.
It was Mr. Chaney’s desire to be cremated and that no services be held.
Born on Sept. 11, 1926 in Houston, Miss., he married Annie Tow on Oct. 3, 1951 in Sweetwater. Mr. Chaney moved to Snyder from Kermit in 1957 and was retired as a derrick man and driller in the oilfield. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the American Legion and VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Chaney of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Walter Edward and Sharon Chaney of Westpoint, Miss.; Danny and Brenda Chaney of Grapeland and Ivan and Lyn Chaney of Snyder; one sister, Lucille Turman of Houston, Miss.; five grandchildren, Chad and Casey Chaney of Snyder, Jodie Harper of Fort Worth, Eddie and Jeffrey Chaney of Westpoint, Miss.; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Tommy Johnston
1935-2002
Tommy Johnston, a native of Snyder, died Monday, Jan. 7, in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.
Private services for Mr. Johnston, 66, will be held at a later date. Cremation was under the direction of Hiller Funeral Home in Bryan.
Born Sept. 11, 1935 in Snyder, he was a graduate of Snyder High School and had worked for American Magnesium. He was retired as a technician for the Texas A&M University water treatment plant. He served in the Navy and was a member of VFW Post 4692.
Survivors include his wife, Elna Johnston of Bryan; a son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Sidney Johnston of Loraine; a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Cal Barkley of Bryan; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Virginia Johnston of Snyder; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Frances Hughes of Snyder, Beverly and Pat Ainsworth of Fluvanna; Marilyn Jo and Junior Bradley of Sour Lake and Sarah McCullough of Midland; seven gr andchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
Fleta Rollins
1956-2002
Fleta Gayle Rollins, a native of Snyder, died Monday, Jan. 21, in an Abilene hospital.
Funeral service for Miss Rollins, 45, is set for 2 p.m. Friday in the Westbrook Baptist Church with the Revs. Bob Manning, Jim Mosley and Paul Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens in Snyder under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Sept. 26, 1956 in Snyder, Miss Rollins was a caregiver and a member of the Westbrook Baptist Church and the Mesquite Country Writers Guild.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, D.O. and Hettie Rollins and Charlie and Ruth Buchanan.
Survivors include her parents, Gerald and Nell Rollins of Westbrook; a brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Julie Rollins of Colorado City; a sister and brother-in-law, Sharla and Bill Bredemeyer of Winters; a nephew, Ethan Bredemeyer of Winters; several aunts; and numerous cousins.
