W.C. Ryan Jr.
1918-2002
W.C. “Dub” Ryan Jr., a former resident of Scurry County, died Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Graveside service for Mr. Ryan, 83, was set for 3 p.m. today in the Terrace Cemetery. The Rev. Arthur Kelly was to officiate and arrangements were under the direction of Justice-Mason Funeral Home.
Born June 27, 1918 in Scurry County, he moved to Dalhart where he attended school until the age of 17. He then returned to Scurry Country to farm with his father.
He married Lola Mae McKinney on Oct. 4, 1940 in Colorado City. They made their first home in Snyder where he operated a service station.
The family moved to Plainview for a brief time and then moved to Garza County where he worked on a ranch. He was then employed by Postex Cotton Mill and owned and operated an auto repair shop. He retired in 1983.
Mr. Ryan was a Baptist and a supporter of the John Miller VFW Post.
Survivors include his wife, Lola Mae Ryan of Post; two brothers, Jackie Paul White and Gene Shrauner, both of Amarillo.
Dorothy Peek
1913-2002
ARLINGTON – Dorothy Alice Peek, the mother of Doris Charlene Davis of Snyder, died Monday, Jan. 21, in Arlington.
Funeral service for Mrs. Peek, 88, is set for 10 a.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church in Arlington. Burial will follow in Moore Memorial Gardens under the direction of Moore Funeral Home.
Born July 26, 1913 in Little Elm, Mrs. Peek had been an elementary school teacher in Clairemont. A resident of Arlington since 1951, she was an organist for the Eastern Star.
Her husband, Judge E.V. Peek, died in 1981.
Survivors include another daughter, Wanda Faye Estes of Arlington; a son, Dr. Darwin Eugene Peek of San Antonio; a sister-in-law, June Cate of Corinth; an aunt, Aline Lawrence of Big Spring; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Lydia Guerrero
1962-2002
SWEETWATER – Lydia Guerrero, the sister of Robert Hernandez of Snyder, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Rolling Plains Hospital.
Rosary for Mrs. Guerrero, 39, is set for 7 this evening in the Cate-Spencer & Tate Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral service is set for 2 p.m. Friday in the St. Albert Catholic Church in Roscoe with burial to follow in the Roscoe Cemetery.
Born on Nov. 10, 1962 in Sweetwater, she married Abraham Guerrero in Roscoe. She was a certified nurses’ aide at Roscoe Healthcare and Holiday Retirement. Mrs. Guerrero was a member of St. Albert Catholic Church.
Her father, Evaristo Hernandez, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Abraham Guerrero of Sweetwater; two sons, Abraham Guerrero Jr. and Joseph Guerrero, both of Sweetwater; two daughters, Michelle Guerrero and Debbie Guerrero, both of Sweetwater; her mother, Virginia Hernandez of Roscoe; a grandmother, Pascuala Hernandez of Sweetwater; four sisters, Virginia Monreal and Lupe Alaniz, both of Sweetwater, and Alicia Vrubel and Jamie Hernandez, both of Roscoe; four other brothers, Evaristo Hernandez Jr., Steve Hernandez, Andres Hernandez and Jesse Hernandez, all of Roscoe.
Joe Sentell
1933-2002
Joseph “Joe” Wright Sentell, retired Snyder businessman and civic leader, died this morning in Scott and White Inn in Temple after a sudden illness.
Services for Mr. Sentell, 69, are pending at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Jan. 18, 1933, in Snyder, Mr. Sentell had been active in civic affairs and retired from Sentell Insurance Agency. A Korean War veteran, Mr. Sentell was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, a longtime member of the Rotary Club and former Snyder city councilman.
He married Mildred Boren on Nov. 28, 1992 in Snyder. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Susan Birkenfeld of Snyder and Diane Russo of Waco; a stepson, David Boren of Post; two stepdaughters, Mary Ezell of Snyder and Jane Elmore of Lubbock; a brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Julie Sentell of Snyder; a sister, Mary Sue Harbaugh of Anacortes, Wash.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lois Sentell; a brother, Sears Sentell; and a grandson, Colby.
Jimmy Prince
1951-2002
WEATHERFORD -- Jimmy Lynn Prince, a former Snyder resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, in Chandler.
Funeral service for Mr. Prince, 50, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in the Cotten-Bratton Funeral Chapel in Weatherford with burial to follow in Memory Garden Cemetery.
Born March 16, 1951 in Snyder, Mr. Prince had worked for Merritt Trucking before moving to Weatherford in 1989. He recently moved to Larue.
His parents, Barney and Inez Prince; and a brother, Walter Thomas Prince, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Brenda Prince of Larue; a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Wes of Weatherford; a son and daughter-in-law, Dub and Veronica Prince of Larue; two brothers, R.V. Prince of Snyder and Milton Prince of Weatherford, Okla.; eight sisters, Bonnie Phipps, Thelma Gardner and Linda Kubena, all of Snyder, Donna Isbell of Beasley, Gay Underwood and Wilma Huckabee of Larue, Nelda Schartz of Weatherford and Mary Howell of Florida; a grandson, Zachary; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lucille Shaw
1905-2002
Lucille Shaw of Snyder died Friday, Jan. 25, in Snyder Oaks Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Services are pending for Mrs. Shaw, 96, at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
She was born on May 8, 1905.
Survivors include a daughter, Pat Bodiford of Snyder; and two sons, Curt Shaw and Curtis Shaw, both of Colorado City.
Martha Schiebel
1926-2002
Martha Zeck Schiebel, former long-time resident of Snyder, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, in Odessa’s Hospice Home.
A memorial service for Mrs. Schiebel will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Trinity Methodist Church in Snyder with the Reverend Gary Hubbard officiating. Judy Hubbard will lead the music.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Mrs. Schiebel was born July 25, 1926, in Raton, New Mexico, to Frank and Margaret Whistler. The family moved to West Texas when Martha was ten. She graduated from Iowa Park High School in 1943, took RN training at Texas Christian University, graduated Midwestern University in 1948, and earned her master’s degree from Texas Tech in 1964.
Martha married Ted Zeck of Iowa Park in 1945, moving to Snyder in 1952. She taught English, and later health, in Snyder schools for 35 years, first at the junior high level and later at Snyder High School. Recently attending First United Methodist Church, she was a charter member of Trinity Methodist, where she served in numerous service and leadership roles. She also enjoyed her work with American Field Service, Atheneum Study Club, and the Wesleyan Service Guild.
In 1979 Martha married Bill Schiebel with whom she enjoyed traveling, entertaining, and volunteering. She volunteered for short-term medical mission trips to Guatemala and Russia. She worked with the Alzheimer’s program, the American Cancer Society, the local Blood Bank, the Cogdell Hospital Auxiliary, and was given the honor of being named Snyder’s Humanitarian of the Year.
Mrs. Schiebel is survived by her three children and their families: Mark (and Doris) Zeck and children Deborah and Jonathan; Paul (and Gail) Zeck and Paul and Pam Patterson’s children Julie (and David) Smithey and Emily Zeck; and Margaret (and Bill) Edwards and children Elizabeth (and Wally) Badley, Jason (and Masha) Edwards, and Caroline Thiessen Edwards. Her sister, Joan Noonkester (and husband Clyde) of Brownwood survive her, as well.
Additionally, she is survived by her stepchildren and their families: Cynthia Schiebel, John (and Sandy) Schiebel and daughters Katherine Schiebel and Kera and Kammi Newby; Barbara (and Billy) Knight and children J. R and Wendy.
Mark’s family lives in Midland. Paul is in Point Blank, Pam is in Dallas, Julie is at the University of Michigan, and Emily is in New York City. Margaret’s family all live near Seattle and include seven of Martha’s great-grandchildren, Kathryn and Alan Badley, Claire and Emma Edwards, and Camille, Grant and David Thiessen.
Cynthia lives in Austin; John’s family is in Naples, Florida; Barbara’s family all lives in Amarillo and include two more great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Aaron Knight.

Robert Buzbee
1922-2002
LUBBOCK -- Robert T. Buzbee, a former resident of Snyder, died Thursday, June 27.
Private graveside services for Mr. Buzbee, 80, were planned in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.
Born March 3, 1922, he married Patsy Sue Petty in 1949 in Odessa. He was a graduate of Abilene High School and attended Hardin-Simmons, McMurry, Abilene Christian, University of Georgia and Northern Illinois School of Optometry.
A U.S. Navy fighter pilot during World War II, he owned and operated the Yellow Cab Co. and Snyder Finance Co. in Snyder for eight years and then opened a furniture store in Roswell, N.M. in 1960.
He was secretary of Shelton Warren Oil Co. in Roswell, was a car dealer and real estate agent. He moved to a ranch in New Mexico for five years before retiring in Lubbock.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Buzbee of Lubbock; two daughters, Jan Ainsworth of Portales, N.M. and Teri Fairman of Lubbock; a sister, Jane Duval of Fort Collins, Colo.; and five grandchildren.
Odell Hilburn
1918-2002
LAMESA -- Odell Frank Hilburn, the brother of Jean Godair of Snyder, died Saturday, June 29.
Military graveside service for Mr. Hilburn, 83, is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Lamesa Memorial Park with the Rev. Bruce Cotton officiating.
Born Dec. 29, 1918 in Stephenville, he attended Liberty community schools. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a medic in the 95th Infantry Division.
He married Julia Hudak on Dec. 15, 1945 in Harrisburg, Pa. Mr. Hilburn was a member of the VFW in Lamesa and Lubbock and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
A resident of Lubbock, he owned and operated Hilburn Tree Service and Pest Control.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Hilburn of Lubbock; a son, Daniel Hilburn of Lubbock; three daughters, Suzanne Hilburn, Barbara Hilburn and Virginia Causer, all of Lubbock; three brothers, Buck Hilburn and Troy Haney, both of Abilene, and Valton Haney of Lamesa; three other sisters, Velkma Pearson of Portales, N.M., Maria Lybrand of Lamesa and Betty Kidd of Lubbock; and four grandchildren.
