HOUSTON -- Carol Cogdell Courtney, Snyder native, died Thursday, Sept. 19, in Houston.
Saturday at Martin’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Laurence A. Gipson and the Rev. Dr. Peter G. Thomas officiating. Graveside service is set for 3 p.m. Monday in the Snyder Cemetery in Snyder.
Mrs. Courtney was born Nov. 6, 1955 in Snyder to Johnnie Brock Cogdell and the late D.M. Cogdell Jr. Mrs. Courtney was a graduate of Mary Baldwin College. She attended Harvard and was a graduate of the University of Texas School of Law where she was a Phi Beta Kappa. Mrs. Courtney was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, the Garden Club of Houston, Kinkaid School Parents Association, a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Fay School and was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Houston. She was on the board of ECW at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, a member of the State Bar of Texas, and was a former associate at Vinson & Elkins, LLP.
She was preceded in death by her father, D.M. Cogdell Jr., and her father-in-law, William R. Courtney.
Survivors include her husband, John P. Courtney of Houston; two sons, John Cogdell Courtney and David Martin Courtney, both of Houston; her mother, Johnnie Brock Cogdell of Lubbock; a sister, Connie Cogdell Clark and her husband Gaylon of Lubbock; her mother-in-law, Shirley Courtney of Temple; an uncle, Billy Cogdell of Silverton; and numerous cousins.

Elna Bunnell

GAIL -- Graveside service for Elna Ludine Dodson Bunnell, 94, of Austin is set for 10 a.m. Monday at Gail Cemetery.
Rev. Clifton Griffith, pastor of Union Baptist Church, will officiate. Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Bunnell died at 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Christopher House in Austin following a lengthy illness.
On March 12, 1909, she was born to the late Hardin Taylor Dodson and Ella Morrison Russell Dodson in Gail. She was married to Frank Bunnell, who died in 1980.
Mrs. Bunnell was a Methodist. She lived in Ogden, Utah for many years, where she was a sheet metal worker in an airplane factory for almost 40 years. From Ogden she moved to Houston for 10 years and then to Pflugerville.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Bunnell was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gwyneth Corlene Meadows, Minnie V. Dodson and three brothers, James Chandler Dodson, Drew Keith Dodson Sr. and Harden Eran Dodson.
She is survived by two nieces, Darla Dodson Smith and her husband, Darryl, of Pflugerville; and McCleta Clark of San Antonio; two nephews, James Monroe Dodson of Lake City, Tenn.; Drew Keith Dodson of Pennsylvania; and a number of other nieces, nephews and friends.
Karen E. Spivey
1950-2003
Funeral Service for Karen Elaine Spivey, 52, who died at home Friday is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church auditorium. Pastor Mike Henson will officiate. Interment will be in Nolan Cemetery.
Karen was born December 16, 1950 in Raton, New Mexico to Joe and Helen Spivey. She will rest near a great, great uncle, Colby Dennis, who was killed in 1898 when a horse fell with him. Karen moved to Texas to be near her parents who retired in Snyder. She was proud of her Texas heritage. Her paternal great grandfather ranched in Nolan, Shackelford, and Stonewall Counties. Her maternal great grandfather fought in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 when Texas became an Independent Republic.
Karen grew up in Billings, Montana. She graduated from Montana State University-Billings and had a long, rewarding career as a Human Resource Recruiter. Her professional involvement included the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE), The Yellowstone Valley Chapter-Society for Human Resource Management, Montana State University Alumni Board of Directors, and the Billings Chamber of Commerce.
Karen was an avid hiker and hiked up many trails in her beloved Beartooth Mountains in Southcentral Montana. She knew of lakes unknown to many. She also enjoyed cross-country skiing, writing poetry, writing short stories, and oil painting.
Karen had a heart for the disadvantaged-especially children. Orphans in other countries were of great concern to her. She gave monetarily to missions as a means or reaching out to others.
The family gives thanks to our many friends and relatives for their continuous prayers. The family also gives special thanks to the following friends at First Baptist Church: Doris Wilson’s Caring Friends Bible Study Class for their prayers, cards, flowers and food during Karen’s illness, Dwayne Williams and the CITA Bible Study class for their concerns and prayers, the Pastors and Deacons for their many prayers, and the Senior Adult Choir for prayers and food.
Karen is survived by her parents, Joe and Helen Spivey, one brother, Dr. Norm Spivey and wife Lois, Mishawaka, Indiana, two special nephews, Matt Spivey, Vero Beach, Florida, Steve Spivey, Mishawaka, Indiana, and loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Velta Day

Velta J. Day, 78, died Sunday, Aug. 3, at his home in Snyder.
Graveside service for Mr. Day is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Slaters Chapel Cemetery in Nolan County. The Rev. Walter McCall, Odyssey Hospice chaplain, will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born April 27, 1925 in Brownfield, he married Claudia Hord on Dec. 18, 1947 in Winters. She died Dec. 26, 2001.
A retired farmer and electrician, Mr. Day had worked 33 years for Lone Star Industries in Maryneal. After living near Sweetwater for many years, the family moved to Snyder in December, 2000. He was a member of the Lamar Street Church of Christ in Sweetwater.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, J.F. and Josie Day; and a sister, Laura Day.
Survivors include a daughter, Velma Ward of Snyder; a son and daughter-in-law, Velta James and Jimmie Day of Snyder; three sisters, Launa Day and Peggy Williams of Abilene and Mary Jo Hand of Sweetwater; four grandchildren, Michael Ward and wife Sandy, Melissa Wells, Trisha Wall and Robin Phillips, all of Snyder; and five great-grandchildren, Chris Ward, Hunter Ward, Amanda Wells, Kimberly Wells and Chase Gaines.
Weldon Cain
1931-2003
Weldon Cain, 71, died Sunday, Aug. 3, at his home in Snyder.
Funeral service for Mr. Cain is set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Charles Day, minister of the Avenue D Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Snyder Cemetery.
Born Nov. 24, 1931 in Kaufman, he married Patricia Overton on May 24, 1955 in Lovington, N.M.
A truck driver for Musselwhite Trucking Co., Mr. Cain served in the National Guard and was a member of the North College Avenue Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, three brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Cain of Snyder; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Jeff Honshiko of Amarillo and Pam and Tommy Jackson of Broken Bow, Okla.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Elaine Cain of Pleasant Hill, N.M., Ricky and Sherry Cain of Clovis, N.M., Gary and Melissa Cain of Midland and David and Alisa Cain of Snyder; a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Anita Cain of Conchas Dam, N.M.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Linda Peteet

DENTON -- Linda W. Peteet, a native of Snyder, died Saturday, Aug. 2, in Denton Regional Medical Center.
Funeral service for Mrs. Peteet, 57, is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Colonial Gardens in Marshall, Texas under the direction of Bill DeBerry Funeral Directors.
Born April 25, 1946 in Snyder, she was a 1964 graduate of Snyder High School and a graduate of the University of North Texas. She married William Peteet on June 1, 1968 in Denton.
Mrs. Peteet, a member of the First Baptist Church, was office manager for Texas Monarch Management.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Kathryn Williamson.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Peteet of Denton; two sons, Kyle Peteet of Corinth and Mark Peteet of Marshall; her father, R.V. Williamson of Snyder; a brother, Troy Williamson of Odessa; and two grandchildren.
Russell Fletcher

LAMPASAS -- Russell Glen Fletcher, a former resident of Scurry County, died Friday, Aug. 1, from injuries sustained in a car accident in Lampasas.
Funeral service for Mr. Fletcher, 41, is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Briggs Gamel Funeral Home in Lampasas with the Rev. James Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
Born Oct. 9, 1961 in Odessa, he was a 1980 graduate of Hermleigh High School and lived in Snyder in 1984-85 while working for Halliburton.
A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Fletcher moved from Princeton to Lampasas seven years ago and worked in the service department for Harrison Well Service. He was a member of the Cornerstone Worship Center in McKinney.
Survivors include five daughters, Misty Ann Fletcher, Christina Nichole Fletcher and Jessica LeeAnn Fletcher of Princeton, Kelli Jo Fletcher and Chancey DeLane Fletcher of Lampasas; his mother and stepfather, Nancy and Darrell Ashley of Andrews; his father and stepmother, William Lawrence and Billie Fletcher of Lampasas; a brother, Larry Fletcher of Lampasas; three sisters, Becky Terry of Big Spring, Ann Liorente of Boyton Beach, Fla., and Kim Whitt of Dripping Springs; and three grandchildren.
