O’DONNELL -- Juventino “Speedy” Balague Jr., the father of Cindy Massingill of Fluvanna, died Tuesday, Aug. 5.
Funeral service for Mr. Balague, 54, was set for 2 p.m. today in the St. Pius X Catholic Church in O’Donnell with the Rev. Leonardo Pahmtang officiating. Interment will follow in the Gail Cemetery under the direction of White Funeral Home.
Born Sept. 21, 1948 in Dilley, he moved to O’Donnell 33 years ago. He was a farmer and employed by the Stephens family for 33 years. He was a Catholic.
Survivors include his wife, Jesusa Balague of O’Donnell; a son, Juventino Balague III of O’Donnell; two other daughters, Vida Gerda of Southlake and Thelma Balague of O’Donnell; his parents, Jose and Elvira Castillo of Poteet; three brothers, George, Thomas and Ricky Balague, all of San Antonio; three sisters, Mary, Nelda and Graci, all of San Antonio; and four grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Borden County EMS or to the American Cancer Society.
Myllise Rhoades
1934-2003
Myllise Faye Rhoades, a native of Scurry County, died Friday, Aug. 8, in Iberia Manor Nursing Home in New Iberia, La.
Services for Mrs. Rhoades, 68, are pending at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
She was born Oct. 14, 1934 in Snyder and was preceded in death by a sister, Florene Seyler.
Survivors include her husband, William Donald Rhoades of Pampa; a daughter, Pam Sue Hataway of Austin; three sons, Donald Ray Rhoades of Abilene, Rick Rhoades and Tabby Joe Rhoades, both of New Iberia; a sister and brother-in-law, Freida and Dan Dever of Snyder; and seven grandchildren.
Howard Tucker
1915-2003
ANDREWS -- Howard Tucker, a former resident of Snyder, died Thursday, Aug. 7.
Funeral service for Mr. Tucker is set for 2 p.m. Sunday in the Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Melton officiating. Burial will follow in the Andrews West Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.
Born March 2, 1915 in Nocona, he married Mary Frances Polk on April 11, 1936 in Hobart, Okla. She died July 19, 2003.
The owner of Tucker Construction Co., the Tuckers moved to Andrews from Snyder in 1961. He also owned Andrews Gas Company from 1977-87 and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Gerry Tucker and Lee Van Tucker, both of Andrews; a daughter, Micheal Ann Hall of Streetman; two brothers, Bill Tucker of Wichita Falls and Coy Tucker of Seagraves; a sister, Freda Edwards of Tipton, Okla.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Kenneth Brackeen
1929-2003
Kenneth Wayne Brackeen, a native of Scurry County, died Saturday, Aug. 16, at his home in Hermleigh after a sudden illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Brackeen, 74, was held today at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with Dale Huff, minister of 37th Street Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was to follow in the Pyron Cemetery.
Born March 26, 1929 in Hermleigh, he was a U.S. Navy and Army veteran of World War II. He married Leona YeVonne Hennington on July 17, 1951 in Hobbs, N.M.
Mr. Brackeen retired as a production foreman from Texaco in 1994 after 33 years in Midland and Scurry County.
A member of the Church of Christ, Mr. Brackeen was a member of the Hermleigh Masonic Lodge and a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Brackeen of Hermleigh; a son, Kenneth W. Brackeen Jr. of Sterling City; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamelia and Jerry Helm of Ira; a sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Jerry Barbee of San Antonio; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Billie Brackeen of Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren, Misty Brackeen, Dustin Brackeen, Austin Brackeen, Taylor Brackeen, Hannah Brackeen and Jeremy Helm; and three great-grandchildren, Darius Rivera, Zoie Brackeen and Brianna Helm.

NEW BRAUNFELS -- Jericah Lynn Sosa, infant great-granddaughter of Cruz and Alejandra Sosa of Snyder, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, at McKenna Memorial Hospital.
Graveside service is set 10 a.m. Friday at the Guadalupe Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Zoeller Funeral Home.
Preceding her in death was a great-grandfather, Nieves Martinez Sr.
Survivors include her parents, Jerry and Melinda Sosa of New Braunfels; three brothers, Johnathon Tyler Uhr, Logan Jacob Sosa and Jaren Jacob Sosa of New Braunfels; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mario Gonzales Sr., Raymond Perez Jr. and Amelia Hernandez; other great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bostian, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Perez Sr.; and cousins, Victoria Ruby Sosa and Keegan Zane Aleman.
Raymond Moore
1920-2003
PALMDALE, Calif. -- Carl Raymond Moore, Scurry County native and sister of Ruby Eades of Snyder, died Monday, Aug. 4.
Funeral service for Mr. Moore, 83, was held Aug. 7 in Valley View Church of the Nazarene.
Born June 15, 1920 in Snyder to the late Henry and Mattie Moore, Mr. Moore retired from Lockheed in 1982 as an electronic maintenance technician. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II and was an avid radio operator.
Survivors also include his wife, Jean Taylor Moore of Palmdale; three sons, Robert Shirley of Texas, Ray Moore and Mark Moore, both of Antelope Valley; four daughters, Martha Meyler of New Jersey, Cindy Nixon, Patti Cyr and Susan Cox, all from Antelope Valley; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Margaret Judkins
1916-2003
ONTARIO, Ore. - Margaret Judkins, a native of Scurry County, died Saturday, Aug. 16, at her home in Ontario.
Funeral service is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Gray’s West & Co. Funeral Home Chapel with Jon Privett, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Born Nov. 15, 1916 in Snyder, she married Robert Garrett Judkins on Nov. 15, 1936 in Snyder.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998 and by a son, George Murphy Judkins.
Survivors include four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
Roy Carter
1931-2003
Roy Carter, longtime Snyder educator and businessman, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, at his home in Snyder after a sudden illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Carter, 72, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday in the First Baptist Church where Mr. Carter had served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years.
The Rev. Mike Henson, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born May 26, 1931 in Rotan, he married Rita Branscum on Feb. 3, 1951 in Rotan.
He attended Hardin-Simmons University on a football scholarship and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1953. He earned his master’s degree from Texas Tech University in 1964.
A resident of Snyder since 1953, Mr. Carter was a teacher and coach at Snyder Junior High in 1954-55. He began coaching and teaching at Snyder High School in 1958 and served as assistant principal from 1969-76 before becoming athletic director for three years. Mr. Carter returned to teaching math in 1979 and retired in 1983 after 30 years in education. Mr. Carter was elected Scurry County school superintendent in 1974. He ran on the platform to abolish the office, and it was eliminated the following year.
Mr. Carter was owner of The Shack restaurant for 27 years and served six years on the board of development at Hardin-Simmons.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Carter of Snyder; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Randy Perkins of Abilene; a son and daughter-in-law, Roy Lee and Mary Beth Carter of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a sister, Mildred McQueen of Rotan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Mary Carter of Hemet, Calif., and James and Darlene Carter of Rotan; four grandchildren, Katie Perkins of Dallas and Kristie Perkins of Abilene, Price Carter and Blythe Carter, both of Chapel Hill.
Family visitation is set for 7-8 this evening at the funeral home.
