Josephine Maule
1923-2003
Josephine Maule, a resident of the Camp Springs community, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, in Snyder Oaks Care Center.
Funeral service for Mrs. Maule, 80, is set for 2 p.m. Friday in the First United Methodist Church in Rotan with Dutch Parks officiating. Burial will follow in the Camp Springs Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
Born March 29, 1923 in Anson, she was the daughter of the late John Harvey and Maggie Hawkins Holt. A graduate of Roby High School, she married George Maule on April 19, 1941 in Rotan.
The family moved to Camp Springs in 1946. Mrs. Maule was a homemaker and a farmer’s wife.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Steve Maule in 1965; two brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include her husband, George Maule of Camp Springs; a son, Brad Maule of Los Angeles; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ronald Halder of Fort Worth and Charlotte and Scott Carey of Fort Stockton; six grandchildren, Sunne Schaake, Tracey Carey, Vince Halder, Stephanie Halder, Hunter Maule and Lily Maule; and five great-grandchildren.
Charlie West
1920-2003
Charlie West, longtime Scurry County resident, died Thursday, Aug. 21, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock after a sudden illness.
Funeral service for Mr. West, 82, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. Roy Rosson, minister of the Dunn Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dunn Cemetery under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Dec. 31, 1920 in Colorado City, he married Emily Cash on Dec. 15, 1951 in Sweetwater. She died March 30, 2002.
A longtime resident of the Dunn and Hermleigh areas, Mr. West was a retired farmer and stockman and a member of the Dunn Church of Christ.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet Botts of Hermleigh; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Lori West of Hermleigh and David and Sophie West of Lubbock; a sister, Adell Barriger of Pico Rivera, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Amy Botts and Valerie West, both of Hermleigh.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 this evening at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Bill Watkins
1945-2003
Bill “Bullet” Watkins, a longtime resident of Snyder, died Sunday, Aug. 10, in Snyder Oaks Care Center.
Funeral service for Mr. Watkins, 58, is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Larry White, pastor of Faith Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Snyder Cemetery.
Born April 12, 1945 in Eunice, N.M., Mr. Watkins lived in Snyder most of his life. A Baptist, he had worked in the oil fields as a trucker before becoming a correctional officer at the Price Daniel Unit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Eugene Watkins and Mildred Juanita McClammey Watkins.
Survivors include two sons, Craig Watkins of Lexington, Ky., and Randy Watkins of Bushnell, Neb.; three brothers, Murray Watkins of Denton, Ronnie Watkins of Hurst and Jim Provence of Yukon, Okla.; and five grandchildren.
Family visitations will be from 6-7 this evening at the funeral home.
Lucy Crowder
1911-2003
Lucy Crowder, longtime Ira resident, died Sunday, Aug. 10, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital.
Graveside service for Mrs. Crowder, 92, is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Ira Cemetery. The Rev. Randy Hardman, pastor of the Gail First Baptist Church, will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born April 25, 1911 in Garland, she married Elton Crowder on March 24, 1933 in Colorado City. He died Dec. 25, 1983. Mrs. Crowder, was a farmer and a homemaker. She had lived in Ira since 1919, moving from Garland.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Lou Crowder of Ira and Robert and Janice Crowder of Austin; and three grandchildren, James Crowder of Ira, Cathey Kohutek of San Angelo and Dawn Crowder of Austin.
Family visitation is set for 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Walter Schattel
1907-2003
SWEETWATER -- Walter Paul Schattel, 96, died Saturday, Aug. 9.
Service with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ward Hayes officiating. Interment will follow in the Lone Wolf Cemetery.
Born June 28, 1907 in Houston, he was the son of Emil and Louise Schattel, immigrants from Austria who purchased land in the Hermleigh community in 1912 for farming.
Mr. Schattel learned to fly at age 16 and was the first person in Scurry County to own and build his own plane.
A U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he retired in 1956 as a lieutenant colonel and returned to Sweetwater.
His wife, Juanita Flemming Schattel, died in 1959. He married Louise McClendon in 1968.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Paul William Schattel; two brothers, John and Leo Schattel; a stepson, W.R. McClendon; and two brothers-in-law, Buford Light and Billy Joe Clifton.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Schattel of Sweetwater; a son, Emil Schattel of Lubbock; two sisters, Della Light of Sweetwater and Evelyn Clifton of Fredericksburg; two brothers, Eugene Schattel of Sweetwater and Ernest Schattel of Roscoe; a stepdaughter, Patsy Poarch of Dallas; a sister-in-law, Annabelle Schattel of Snyder; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Juan Bernal
1939-2003
Juan Bernal died Sunday, Aug. 10, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock after a brief illness.
Rosary for Mrs. Bernal, 64, will be held at 7 p.m. today in Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel.
Mass is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Fr. Edward Teo officiating. Burial will follow in Snyder Cemetery.
Born March 20, 1939 in Mexico, he married Licha De Lao on March 12, 1970 in Dallas. A retired roustabout, he had lived in Snyder since 1975.
Survivors include his wife, Licha Bernal of Snyder; four daughters, Rose Ramos, Mary Jane Aguirre, Laura Ann Bernal and Amanda Bernal, all of Snyder; two sons, John “Junior” Bernal and Michael Bernal, both of Snyder; three sisters, Aurora Mireles, Josefa Bernal and Consuelo Rodriquez, all of Mexico; one brother, Alfonso Bernal of O’Donnell; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Coryie Carpenter

Coryie Lee Dulin Carpenter, sister of Dolores Gillum of Snyder, died Friday, Aug. 8.
Funeral service for Mrs. Carpenter was held Monday in the 22nd and Austin Street Church of Christ. Kerry Cain, minister, officiated. Burial followed in the Colorado City Cemetery under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home in the Colorado City Church of Christ with the Rev. Kerry Cain officiating. Burial was in the Colorado City Cemetery. Arrangements were by Kiker Seale Funeral Home.
Born on March 31, 1919 in Eastland County, she married Oren Ray Carpenter on Nov. 6, 1937 in Snyder. He died Sept. 11, 1980.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Ada Dulin, two sisters, Billie Fay Dulin and Jennie Dulin Craghead; two brothers, Guy Ray Dulin and Joe Wilton Dulin; a son, Lyndall Carpen ter; and one granddaughter, Vicki Lynn.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Dwayne and Carolyn Carpenter of Odessa and Darrell and Brenda Carpenter of Colorado City; two brothers, Bud Dulin and C.W. Dulin, both of Abilene; two other sisters, Doris Dulin and Verna Neel of Colorado City; another daughter-in-law, Barbara Carpenter of Oceanside, Calif.; five grandchildren, Suzy Ward of Brownwood, Cheryal Carpenter of Brownwood, Ray Carpenter of Colorado City and Andra Manning of Lewisville; and nine great-grandchildren.
Eugenia Grizzle
1924-2003
Eugenia Faye Grizzle, longtime Ira resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, in Semper Care Center in Midland after a lengthy illness.
Service for Mrs. Grizzle, 79, is set for 2 p.m. Friday in the Ira Baptist Church. The Rev. Kenneth Martin, pastor, will officiate.
Born on June 9, 1924 in Ira, she married Jesse William Grizzle in Ira. He died on June 13, 1979. Mrs. Grizzle was a homemaker and had lived in Ira for nearly 50 years, moving to Midland five years ago.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Dianne Grizzle of Midland; a granddaughter, Cassandra Dianne Grizzle of Midland; and two grandsons, Heath Wayne Grizzle of Midland and Jesse Brent Grizzle of Lubbock.
Fred Beard
1921-2002
KERRVILLE -- Mr. Fred Ray Beard passed away on May 30, 2002 in Kerrville, Texas.
Mr. Beard was born August 28, 1921 in St. Petersburg, Texas to Samuel and Naomia Beard. He married Fern Cole on November 1, 1947 in Lubbock, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Beard lived in Snyder from 1956 to 1985. During that time, he worked for the Snyder Independent School district. He then moved to Kerrville where he retired.
He is survived by his wife, Fern Beard of Kerrville; son, Randy Beard of Kerrville; daughter, Dr. Brenda Covey of New Braunfels; two grandchildren, Russell and Jarrod Covey; and one nephew, Fred Owen of Dallas.
