J.D. “Doug”West of Snyder died Thursday, Aug. 14, in the Scenic Mountain Hospital in Big Spring.
Service for Mr. West, 78, is set for 2 p.m. Sunday in the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Mike Henson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Snyder Cemetery under the direction of Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Born on June 17, 1925 in Scurry County, he married Wanda Sterling on Feb. 14, 1952 in Roscoe.
Mr. West was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Max West; one daughter-in-law, Sandra West; and one niece and two nephews.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda West of Snyder; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Morgan West and Larkin and Sue West, all of Snyder; a sister, Saxton Powell of Seal Beach, Calif.; and two grandsons, Shane West and Colton West, both of Snyder.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Betty Lou House
1928-2003
Betty Lou House, longtime Snyder civic worker, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, at her home after a brief illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. House, 74, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jim Hill, pastor of First Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Born Sept. 29, 1928 in Clarksville, she married Bud House on Nov. 26, 1947 in Snyder. Mrs. House, a homemaker, moved to Snyder in 1947. Involved in civic affairs Mrs. House had served on the state PTA board and was a longtime member of the chamber of commerce. Mrs. House received the Goldcoat of the Year award. She had served on the July 4, the chamber banquet, Western Swing and the White Buffalo Festival committees.
One sister and two brothers preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Bud House of Snyder; three daughters, Brenda Kise and her husband Gene of Austin, Beverly Herring of Coahoma and Sandy Hildreth and her husband Brad of Southlake; a son, Gene House and his wife Dianna of Belen, N.M.; a sister, Jane West of Vernon; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family meal will be served at the Ira Baptist Church following the service.
Family visitation is set for 7-8:30 this evening at the funeral home.
J.P. Ward
1922-2003
J.P. Ward, a former Snyder teacher and coach, died Saturday, Aug. 16, in Fort Worth after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Ward, 80, was set for 10 a.m. today in the Acton Baptist Church. Burial was to follow in Holly Hills Memorial Park under the direction of Wiley Funeral Home.
Born Oct. 15, 1922 in Jones County, he attended school in Truby, Hodges and Anson. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 1948 and a master’s degree in education in 1952.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for 38 months and married Janie Devaney in Anson on Jan. 31, 1945.
He was in education for 34 years, coaching in Anson, Vega, Snyder and Birdville.
Mr. Ward moved to Granbury in 1982 and was a deacon of the Acton Baptist Church and president of the Live Longer and Like It Club. Mr. Ward was president of the Hood County Retired Teachers for two years and served on the board of directors of the Indian Harbor Association.
Survivors include his wife, Jamie Ward of Granbury; three sons, the Rev. Glenn Ward of Acton, Benny Ward of Lampasas and Ron Ward of Austin; two daughters, Donna Headstream of Abilene and Victoria Norman of Granbury; a sister, Maydell Scott of Graham; a brother Donald Ward of Anson; and 12 grandchildren.
Opal Minton
1913-2003
Opal Inez Minton, a native of Scurry County, died Saturday, Feb. 1, in Snyder Oaks Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Minton, 90, is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the East Side Church of Christ with Tom Holcomb, minister, officiating. Burial will follow in the Dunn Cemetery under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Jan. 8, 1913 in Snyder, she married Robert Louie Minton on Dec. 24, 1931 in Snyder. He died in 1983.
Mrs. Minton was a homemaker and a member of the East Side Church of Christ.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeanie Fambro of Snyder; three sons, Bob Minton of Tucson, Ariz., Frank Minton of Crockett and Thomas Minton of Sweetwater; two sisters, Hazel Berry of Abilene and Bonnie Crenshaw of Snyder; a brother, Donald J. Jones of Longview; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 this evening at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Helen Bolin
1933-2003
Helen Bolin, longtime Snyder resident, died Saturday, Feb. 1, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Bolin, 69, is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Mike Henson, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland. Arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral home.
Born Nov. 30, 1933 in Mount Vernon, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Willie Bolin.
Ms. Bolin was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Donna Fisher of Lubbock, Helen Deneese Pemberton of Garland and Donna Lynn Pemberton of Wylie; a brother, Joe Bolin of Orlando, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Family visitation will be held from 8 to 9 this evening at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Irma Haddox
1918-2003
Irma Deen Haddox, a native of Scurry County, died Monday, Feb. 3, after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Haddox, 84, is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Ira Church of God with her son, the Rev. Bobby Haddox, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ira Cemetery under the direction of Community Memorial Funeral Home of Abilene.
Born Aug. 12, 1918 in Ira to Bill and Mintie (Barnett) Giddens, she was a 1937 graduate of Ira High School, the first class to wear a cap and gown at Ira.
She worked for many years at the café in Ira as a cook and later owned and operated the café, Deen’s Place until her retirement in 1983.
Mrs. Haddox lived in Ira until 1995 at which time she moved to Colonial Oaks Nursing home in Cross Plains to be near her daughter. When the nursing home closed in 2002, she moved to Coronado Nursing Center in Abilene. She was a member of the Ira Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Winfrey Giddens; two sisters, Ruby Brooks and Mayme Giddens; a granddaughter, Michelle Arnold; and a son-in-law, John Arnold.
Survivors include three children, Deena Levoy Arnold of Livingston, James and Deborah Griswold of Hawley and the Rev. Bobby and Lori Haddox of Welty, Okla.; eight grandchildren, David and Jeff Arnold, Stephen, Timothy and Michael Curry, LaTrisha Clark and Lee and Wesley Haddox; 14 great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edna Branin of Jal, N.M., and Anna Perry of Lake Charles, La.

David Harveson

David Harveson, the husband of Joy McSpadden Harveson, died Saturday, Feb. 1, in St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston after a lengthy illness.
Services for Mr. Harveson, 33, are pending with Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock.
He is the son-in-law of Vera McSpadden of Snyder.
Charles Park
1947-2003
Charles Barton Park, son of Jo Ashley of Snyder, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, at his residence in Aptos.
A memorial service for Mr. Park, 55, is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in Aptos.
Born on Feb. 16, 1947 in Dallas, he moved to Snyder at age 2 and graduated from Snyder High School in 1965.
He was preceded in death by his father, Woody Park.
Survivors also include his wife, Vibeke von der Hude of the home; a son, Jacob Park of the home; two brothers, Paul Park and his wife Sandy of Ruidoso, N.M., and Barry Park of Baytown; one nephew, Dylan Park of Houston; and his stepfather, Carl Ashley of Snyder.
Thermon Moore
1918-2003
Funeral service for Thermon C. Moore, 84 was held today in the Colorado City First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Snyder’s Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Moore, 84, died Friday, Jan. 31, in a San Angelo hospital.
Born April 10, 1918 in Big Spring, he married Friday Howell on July 17, 1944 in Big Spring.
Mr. Moore was a resident of Colorado City from 1952 to 1999 when he moved to San Angelo. He was a petroleum operator for Col-Tex Refinery and later for Fina in Big Spring. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Colorado City and the Immanuel Baptist Church in San Angelo.
Survivors include his wife, Friday Moore of San Angelo; a son, Cleve Moore of San Angelo; a sister, Faye Moore of Midland; three granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
