Jimmy Smith
1932-2003
ODESSA -- Jimmy R. Smith, a native of Scurry County, died Monday, Jan. 6, from injuries sustained in a fall in his back yard.
Funeral service for Mr. Smith, 70, is set for 10 a.m. Friday in the Immanuel Baptist Church. Graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Williams Cemetery in Smith County. Arrangements are under the direction of Frank Wilson Funeral Directors.
Born Oct. 11, 1932 in Hermleigh, he was a 1950 graduate of Hermleigh High School. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he married Jerrie Williams on Dec. 27, 1955.
Mr. Smith completed court reporting school in December of 1961 and went to work for State District Judge George Kelton and then for Judge Ray McKim. In 1979 he began work for Federal Judge Lucius D. Bunton III, retiring in January, 1999. He was a member of the National Court Reporter’s Association and the Texas Court Reporter’s Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lillie Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Jerrie Smith of Odessa; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Scott and Grace Smith of Odessa; a daughter and son-in-law, Tana Lynn and Steven Cooper of Chertz; three sisters, Mattie Belle Hays, Estelle Thompson and Billie Jo Farnsworth; two brothers, Harvey L. Smith and Bobby Smith; three grandchildren, Lillian and William Smith and Joseph McFarland.
The family suggest memorials to the Odessa Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary Look Good Feel Good program.
Margarita Lain
1976-2003
Margarita Garcia Lain, a Snyder native, died Friday, Jan. 17, at her home in Dallas.
Service for Mrs. Lain, 26, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Calvary Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry McAden will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Born on Aug. 8, 1976 in Snyder, she married Brad Lain on Sept. 14, 2002 in Snyder. Mrs. Lain had lived in Dallas for six years and was a security guard for an apartment complex. She was a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Elena Gonzales Garcia.
Survivors include her husband, Brad Lain of Dallas; her father, Amado O. Garcia of Snyder; a sister, Catalina Jones of Snyder; seven brothers, Manuel Garcia and Albert Garcia, both of Forney, Rual Garcia of New Boston, Tex., George Garcia of Fort Stockton, Samuel Garcia of Big Spring, Mario Garcia of Snyder and Timothy Garcia of Irving; her father- and mother-in-law, Steve and Jan Lain of Flower Mound; a mother-in-law, Susan Lain of Silver City, N.M.; a grandmother-in-law, Dannie Jones of Silver City; and a brother-in-law, Brian Lain of Silver City.
Geneva Tealer
1938-2003
Geneva Tealer, the sister of six Snyder residents, died Sunday, Jan. 19, in the Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Crane.
Service for Mrs. Tealer, 64, is set for 10 a.m. Friday in St. Matthew’s Baptist Church with the Rev. Unice C. Brazil officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Brownfie ld under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.
Born in Taylor, Mrs. Tealer was a retired nurse and a Baptist.
Survivors include four sons, Willie James Tealer, Carl Lee Tealer and Ray Lee Tealer, all of Odessa, and Eddie Tealer Jr. of Wichita Falls; three daughters, Dollie White and Mary Jones, both of Odessa, and Elaine Tealer of Brownfield; five brothers, Robert Braziel, Napolean Braziel, Rufus Braziel and Luther Braziel, all of Snyder, and Unice C. Braziel of San Antonio; four sisters, Birdie Anderson and Mozelle King, both of Snyder, Evelyn Wesley of Lubbock and Ida Mae Nelson of Odessa; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
J.D. Hinton
1929-2003
Funeral service for Joseph DeShane “J.D.” Hinton, is set for 10 a.m. Monday in the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Buddy Payne, pastor, and the Rev. Miller Robinson, retired minister, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Mr. Hinton, 73, died Thursday, Jan. 23, at his home in Snyder following a lengthy illness.
Born Dec. 18, 1929 in Okmulgee, Okla., he moved with his family to Abilene in 1942. He was a 1947 graduate of Abilene High School. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1952 with a bachelor of architecture degree and an officer’s commission in the U.S. Army.
He served in the Korean War as a first lieutenant in the field artillery. He was a battery officer and forward observer and later became an air observer and received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters.
At the end of the war, he returned home and married Jane Ann Brightman on Oct. 24, 1953 in Fort Worth. He began work for Tucker and Lindberg, Architects and Engineers. After he became a registered architect, he was made a partner in the firm.
In 1958, he moved to Snyder to open an architectural office. During his 25 years of practice he designed many projects, including additions to the junior high, the library, field house and ag building at the high school, the fire station and police station, the Law Enforcement Center, the first renovation of Cogdell Memorial Hospital and renovation of the Scurry County Courthouse. He retired in 1980.
A past-president of the Snyder Quarterback Club and Scurry County Heart Association, Mr. Hinton served on the Snyder City Council from 1971-75 and served one year as mayor pro tem. He served on the board of the Snyder Independent School District from 1981-87 and was board president in 1984. Mr. Hinton was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Hinton of Snyder; three sons, Mike Hinton of Snyder, Mark Hinton of Portland, Ore., and Greg Hinton of Austin; a sister, Deidra Massey of Fort Worth; and 12 grandchildren.

Ms. Flores, 18, died Thursday, Jan. 23, in a house fire in Hermleigh.
Born Oct. 2, 1984 in Snyder, she had attended Snyder High School and was a senior at Hobbs Alternative School.
She was accompanied in death by three children, Jasmine Flores, Angela Flores and Jimmy Lee Luna Jr.
Survivors include her companion, Jimmy Lee Luna of Hermleigh; her mother and father, Connie and Ernest Flores of Snyder; five brothers, Isaac Elio Flores, Ernest Flores III, Matthew Flores, Noah Flores and Noel Flores, all of Snyder; three sisters, Ashley Marie Flores, Laura Ann Flores and Crystal Martina Flores, all of Snyder; her grandparents, Blasa Flores and Elio Garza; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

James Terry
1906-2003
James C. Terry, a former Snyder resident, died Friday, Jan. 24, in Abilene.
Funeral service for Mr. Terry, 96, was set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church in Childress. Clay Belcher of Snyder and Johnny Robertson of Childress were to officiate and burial was to follow in the Childress Cemetery.
Born Nov. 7, 1906 in Montague County, he moved with his family to Cottle County in 1913. He graduated from Childress High School and married Annie Laurie Wright in 1936. He lived in Cottle County and farmed there for 71 years.
After his wife’s death, he moved to Snyder and married Vada Burleson in 1989. For the past six years, he had lived with a daughter and son-in-law in Abilene.
A life-long Methodist, he was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Snyder for 12 years.
Survivors include his wife, Vada of Snyder; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Marlene Terry of Borger and Mike and D’Lynn Terry of San Antonio; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Joe Wilson of Abilene; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Hendrick Hospice, Ceta Canyon Methodist Camp or to the Church of the Hills in Fluvanna.
