Jerry Davis
1940-2003
LEONARD -- Jerry A. Davis, a Scurry County native, died Tuesday, July 8, at Presbyterian Hospital in Greenville.
Funeral service for Mr. Davis, 62, was set for 10 a.m. today in the Peace Tabernacle Church in Trenton with the Rev. Wayne Hutchins officiating. Burial was to follow in the Leonard Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Funeral Home.
Born Aug. 8, 1940 in Snyder, he was a 1958 graduate of Snyder High School. He married Clydene Lyons on Aug. 24, 1985 in Durant, Okla.
A resident of Leonard, Mr. Davis was a certified public accountant and a member of the Peace Tabernacle Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Geraldine Woolever Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Clydene Davis of Leonard; five sons, Joe Aguirre of Dallas, Eddie Aguirre of Leonard, Alex Aguirre of Rowlett, Kris Davis of Plano and Keith Davis of Saginaw; three daughters, Kim Sanders of Plano, Anita Cluck of Leonard and Karen Pratt of Arlington; a sister, Belinda Arey of Greenville; a brother, Naxey Davis of Greenville; and four grandchildren.

Pauline Lee
1921-2003
LUBBOCK -- Pauline Thompson Lee, a native of Scurry County, died Monday, July 7, in Lubbock.
Funeral service for Mrs. Lee, 82, is set for 11 a.m. Friday in the Wilson’s Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Howard Mayne officiating. Interment will be in Wilson’s Funeral Directors Cemetery.
Born June 3, 1921 in Snyder, she married James Allen Lee on June 29, 1940 in Brownfield. He died Feb. 16, 1985. A son, Jerry Dewayne Lee, died in 1946.
Survivors include a daughter, Luene Cosson of Hitchcock; three sons, James Lee of Lubbock, Clyde Lee of Plainview and Teddy Lee of Carrollton; two sisters, Ernestine Dukes of Lakeland, Fla., and Winnie Young of Kermit; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Warren Whatley
1959-2003
Warren Dean Whatley died Monday, July 7, at his residence in Odessa.
Memorial service for Mr. Whatley, 44, was held Friday in the North Side Baptist Church with the Rev. Clydel Chapman officiating. Odessa Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Born Feb. 4, 1959 in Brownwood, he was a welder in the oil field and was a me mber of the North Side Baptist Church. He married Sheila Hunt on Feb. 23, 1979 in Odessa.
Survivors include his wife, Sheila Whatley of Odessa; a son, Warren Bo Dean Whatley of Odessa; his parents, Carl Dean and Nettie May Whatley of Odessa; and a grandchild, Laney Sue Whatley of Odessa.

Tony Gayle
1918-2003
ARLINGTON -- Tony Reinhardt Gayle, the father of John Gayle of Snyder, died Thursday, July 10, at his home in Arlington after a lengthy illness.
Graveside service for Mr. Gayle, 84, is set for 2 p.m. Sunday in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home.
Born in New Richmond, Ohio, he attended Ohio Military Institute and graduated from Herald of Westport High School in Kansas City, Mo., in 1936.
Mr. Gayle served four years in the U.S. Navy before becoming a manufacturer’s representative in sporting goods and fishing tackle.
He helped found and became president of the Southwest Tackle Market Association and the Southwest Athletic Traders Association and held office in the Sporting Goods Representative Association. He retired in 1973 after 32 years as a salesman. He also invested in real estate and thoroughbred horses.
A 50-year Mason, Mr. Gayle was a member of the Scottish Rite and a Shriner.
He married Betty Ann Stasny on Dec. 19, 1959 in Norfolk, Va., and the family lived in Dallas before moving to Arlington in 1973.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Gayle of Arlington; a son John Gayle of Snyder; two grandchildren, Paige Martin and husband, Erik, and Chris Gayle, all of Washington State.
The family suggests memorials to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or to a charity of choice.

Cleburne Warren
1920-2003
ODESSA -- Cleburne Warren, the father of Wade Warren of Snyder, died Friday, July 11, in Medical Center Hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Warren, 83, is set for 4 p.m. Monday in the Chapel Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Law officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Born Feb. 17, 1920 in Sanger, he had lived in Big Lake and Irving before moving to Odessa in 1959. Mr. Warren was retired from Humble Oil and Refining Co. and was a member of the Chapel Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Bonnie Warren; two other sons, Gary Warren of Odessa and Johnny Warren of Cedar Park; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Travis Shelton
1921-2003
LUBBOCK -- Travis Shelton, the father of Christy Thompson of Snyder, died Friday, July 11. He was 82.
Funeral service for Mr. Shelton, a former Lubbock County district attorney, is set for 10 a.m. Monday in the Westminister Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors.
Born Jan. 30, 1921 in Lynn County, he moved with his family to Tahoka in 1938. Mr. Shelton attended Texas Tech for three years before joining the Coast Guard in 1942 where he became a navigator aboard a seagoing tug sent to the Pacific during World War II.
He married Mary Lou Metcalf on April 14, 1946, the same day he was discharged from the military.
He earned his law degree from the University of Texas in 1949 and took a job as assistant county attorney in Lubbock. He was elected district attorney in 1950 and served three two-year terms. The judicial district was composed of Lubbock, Hockley, Cochran and Crosby counties.
Mr. Shelton was president of the State Bar of Texas in 1977-78 and served on the bar committee seven years to revise the penal code that was adopted in 1974.
Mr. Shelton was a charter member of the State Bar Foundation which honored him with the Outstanding 50-year Lawyer Award in 2002.
He was named executive of the y ear by the Lubbock Sales Executive Association in 1976. Mr. Shelton was a charter member of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association and past-president of the Lubbock Lions Club and Lubbock Bar Association.
A member of the Westminister Presbyterian Church, he taught Sunday school for 47 years. Mr. Shelton was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1968 and was a member of the Covenant Foundation Chairman’s Roundtable.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Shelton of Lubbock; another daughter, Shelly Livingston of Washington, D.C.; a son, Steve Shelton of Wichita Falls; a twin sister, Avis Buchanan of Tahoka; a brother, Marshall Shelton of Tulia; a son-in-law, Dr. Paul Thompson of Snyder; and four grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Texas Lions Camp, Box 2900247 in Kerrville, 78029.

Donna Fowler
1944-2003
Donna Sue Fowler, executive director of the Snyder Chamber of Commerce, died this morning at her home in Fluvanna after a brief illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Fowler, 59, is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in Colonial Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Tommy Culwell, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born July 9, 1944 in Oakland, Calif., she was a 1962 graduate of Snyder High School. She married Joe Fowler on Aug. 26, 1962 in Gainesville. They lived in Houston before returning to Snyder in 1976.
Mrs. Fowler, a self-proclaimed “cheerleader” of Snyder and Scurry County, once owned the Sunshine Ice Cream Shop. For 16 years she was employed by KSNY Radio, 10 years as sales and operations manager. During those years she co-hosted an early morning radio program, “Coffee Break.”
Mrs. Fowler became chamber manager on Jan. 1, 1995. At the time she was selected from a list of 18 applicants, Mrs. Fowler described the position as “the job I wanted all my life.”
As chamber executive, she managed the Scurry County Coliseum for seven years and helped organize the White Buffalo Celebration and the Western Swing Festival.
She was a member of the economic development committee that worked to located the Price Daniel unit in Snyder and was part of the committee that helped raise funds to build a chapel at the prison unit.
She had served on the United Way, worked with the American Cancer Society, was a former Girl Scout leader, PTA president and Lucky 13 sponsor.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bernice Parker, on Jan. 8, 1996; and her stepfather, Sterling Parker, on April 1, 1995.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Fowler of Fluvanna; a daughter, Lezli Guerrero of Snyder; two sons, Jimmy Joe Fowler of Snyder and Jeffery Fowler and wife Tiffany of Lubbock; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Mollie Shearer of Snyder; a father and stepmother, Elton and Peggy Shearer of Montgomery; and five grandchildren.

Manuel Young
1939-2003
LUBBOCK -- Manuel Dean Young of Lubbock, the brother of Linda Walton of Snyder, died Saturday, July 12, in Covenant Medical Center after a long illness.
Service for Mr. Young, 63, was set for 10 a.m. today in the Sanders Memorial Chapel with George Johnson, pastor of Lubbock Primitive Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was set for 2:30 p.m. in the Afton Cemetery.
Mr. Young was born and reared at Afton in Dickens County and was a graduate of Patton Springs High School. He married Tommie Kaye Rinn on Feb. 20, 1971.
Mr. Young retired this year after a long career as senior technical specialist with CHR Solutions and Western Electric Company.
Survivors include his wife, Tommie Kaye Young of the home; two sons, Christopher Young of the home and Randy Young of Lubbock; his mother and stepfather, Shirley and Carl Barton of Roaring Springs; his mother-in-law, Sybil Prickett; two other sisters, Chloe Anderson of Lubbock and Barbara Winkler of Los Lunas, N.M.; a brother, Bill Young of Burton, Tex.; and one grandson, Clayton Young of Abilene.
The family suggests memorials to the Jo Arrington Cancer Center, 4191 22nd Place in Lubbock, 79410.
