SWEETWATER - Ola Ann Wright of Santa Anna, former Snyder resident, died Thursday, Aug. 30, in Brownwood Regional Hospital.
Service for Mrs. Wright, 65, is set for 10:30 a.m. Monday in the McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater. Dr. Mark Alexander will officiate. Burial will follow in the Roscoe Cemetery in Roscoe.
Born on April 18, 1938 in Stephens County, she married Kelly Leon Wright on Jan. 31, 1956 in Roscoe. He died on March 25, 1993. She lived in Brownwood for two years and Sweetwater for eight years before moving to Santa Anna. A homemaker, she was a member of the Santa Anna First United Methodist Church.
She was also preceded in death by a sister.
Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Wortham and husband Michael of Katy, and Melinda Franklin and husband Dub of Santa Anna; two brothers, D.C. Strother and wife Bobbie of Sweetwater, and John Strother of Roscoe; a sister, Joyce LeCroy and husband Millard of Sweetwater; two brothers-in-law, Lewis Edward Wright Jr. and his wife Leoda and Garland Brock of McCaulley; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Family visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at McCoy Funeral Home.
Elbert Buchanan
1920-2003
Elbert Buchanan, 83, died Thursday, Oct. 30, at his home on North Ave. N after a sudden illness.
Local arrangements were under the direction of Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Services are pending with Laurel Land Funeral Home in Fort Worth.
Skipper Joyce
1908-2003
Fla “Skipper” Joyce, longtime Scurry County resident, died Saturday, Nov. 1, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Joyce, 95, is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. Tom Holcomb, minister of the East Side Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Born Feb. 25, 1908 in Lubbock, he married Lucille Eoff on Oct. 14, 1934 in Wichita Falls.
Mr. Joyce moved to Snyder from Mt. Vernon in 1920 and was a cotton ginner with the Joyce Brothers Gins until 1952. He served as director of maintenance and transportation for the Snyder public schools for 17 years, retiring May 30, 1969.
A member of the Church of Christ, Mr. Joyce was an organizer of the Snyder Little League Baseball Association, and was a longtime Little League coach. He was a former board member of Snyder Savings and Loan Association.
Mr. Joyce was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Mae Templeton; and three brothers, Amos, Ixon and Sam Joyce.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Joyce of Snyder; three nieces and their husbands, Bette and Spike Harris of Abilene, Helen and Travis Hatter and Jane and Ted Crenwelge, all of Snyder.
Jerry Scrivner
1940-2003
Jerry Mack Scrivner, longtime Scurry County resident, died Saturday, Nov. 1, at his home northwest of Snyder after a sudden illness.
A private service for Mr. Scrivner, 63, will be conducted at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter McCall, Odyssey Hospice chaplain, officiating.
Born Aug. 27, 1940 in Scurry County, he married Chris Collier on Jan. 4, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nev.
A lifelong resident of Scurry County, he was retired from Midwest Electric Cooperative.
He was preceded in death by his parents, T.B. and Marie Scrivner; and a brother, Lowell Scrivner.
Survivors include his wife, Chris Scrivner of Snyder; and a daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and John Miller of Kerrville; a stepdaughter and her husband, Misty and Stephen Sanders of Odessa; a stepson and his wife, Justin and Heidi Locknane of Toledo, Ohio; a grandson, Tyler Thompson of Snyder; and four stepgrandchildren, Andrew and Devon Collier and Trevor and Tyler Mack Locknane; and a nephew, Larry Scrivner of Colorado City.
Friends are contributing to the Dermott Cemetery Association, in care of Cathy Hall, 9114 CR 2126 in Snyder, 79549.
Family visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 this evening at the family home on Polar Road.
Dorothy Davis
1929-2003
Graveside service for Dorothy Fay Davis will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Hillside Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Charles Day, pastor of the Ave. D. Baptist Church, will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Mrs. Davis, 74, died Sunday, Nov. 2, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Sept. 2, 1929 in Linden, she married Duane Davis on March 5, 1949 in Snyder. Mr. Davis, a former Scurry County commissioner, died May 26, 1993.
She was also was preceded in death by a daughter, Geni Cox; a twin brother, Donald Ray Duck; and a sister, Vivian Green.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Kay Davis of Hermleigh; a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Laverne Duck of Sulphur Springs; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Florine Merritt
1918-2003
Our Christian mother, Florine Merritt, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Sunday, November 2, 2003, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring, Texas following a sudden illness.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at Colonial Hill Baptist Church in Snyder with Rev. Tommy Culwell, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Snyder Cemetery.
Visitation and viewing will be 10:00 until 11:00 AM Tuesday at Colonial Hill Baptist Church.
She was born March 20, 1918 at Memphis, Texas. She was the daughter of Nellie Wasson Bullard and Ernest Bullard. She married Cone J. Merritt, September 3, 1935 in Snyder. She lived most of her life in Snyder until four months ago when moving to Big Spring. Cone was a Baptist Minister, pastoring several area churches. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1995. Florine played the piano, sang specials with her husband, taught Sunday School Classes and worked with the W.M.U. She worked several years as a pre-kindergarten teacher where she was lovingly called “Little Miss Merritt”. She had also worked at Mildred’s Dress Shop in Snyder, but she was mainly a mother to four children and grandmother to eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She is survived by one daughter: Jane Hammond and her husband Bill of Big Spring; three sons: Dwaine Merritt and his wife Belinda of Snyder, Charles Thomas Merritt of Denver, Colorado, and Craig Merritt and his wife Janet of Snyder; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

COLORADO CITY -- Roy Lee Beach, 72, of Colorado City died Sunday, Nov. 2, in a local hospital.
Graveside service is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Colorado City Cemetery. Dr. Ted Spear and the Rev. Robert Bracy will officiate. Arrangements are by Kiker-Seale-Funeral Home.
Born on Jan. 3, 1931 in Colorado City, he married Joan Archer on Jan. 1, 1954 in National City, Calif. Mr. Beach, a lifelong resident of Colorado City, was a production supervisor for Atlantic-Richfield Oil Co. for 28 years and a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Mary Henderson Beach.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Beach of Colorado City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Jerry Rinehart of Snyder and Sue Ann and Jessie Dominguez of Artesia, N.M.; five grandchildren, Jerrod Rinehart of Irving, Courtney Rinehart of Lubbock, Austin Rinehart of Snyder, Jessica Donimguez and Justin Dominguez, both of Artesia; a great-grandchild, Angel Luevano of Artesia; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe Barrera

COLORADO CITY -- Joe D. Barrera of Houston, brother of Virginia Barrera of Snyder, died Thursday, Oct. 30, in Houston after a lengthy illness.
Funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Colorado City for Mr. Barrera, 69. Burial will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery with his cousin, Deacon Salome Barrera, officiating.
Mr. Barrera was born on Oct. 16, 1934 in Marlin and moved to Houston from Snyder 44 years ago.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Joe and Rosa Barrera; and a brother, Abraham Barrera.
Survivors also include his wife, Antonia Barrera of Houston; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Edward Valles of Houston; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Joe Barrera III, Jesse and Yolanda Barrera, David and Jessica Barrera, Michael and Irene Barrera and Gilbert and Marciela Barrera, all of Houston; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
