Carole Haynes
1944-2003
Patricia Carole Haynes, longtime educator in Scurry County, died Sunday, Nov. 9, at her home near Hermleigh after a long battle with cancer.
A memorial service for Mrs. Haynes, 59, is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the First United Methodist Church in Hermleigh. The Revs. Chuck Shores and Jim Reinbolt will officiate. Cremation is planned and arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Aug. 22, 1944 in Snyder, she was a 1962 graduate of Hermleigh High School and in 1966 earned her bachelor of science degree from Texas Tech University where she later received her master’s degree.
She married Billy Haynes on July 1, 1977 in Hermleigh.
Mrs. Haynes taught school in Compton, Calif., and in Beaufort, S.C., before teaching in Hermleigh for two years.
She was a member of the Snyder ISD staff for 23 years, retiring in 1999, the same year she was honored as Scurry County Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Haynes was a former member of the Hermleigh school board and was active in the Scurry County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and Scurry County Democratic Party. She also served on the Methodist Church board in Hermleigh.
She was preceded in death by her parents, G.E. Chorn in 1992, and Virginia Chorn in 1996; and two brothers, Tom Chorn in 1994 and Jimmy Chorn in 1993.
Survivors include her husband, Billy Haynes of Hermleigh; two sons and their fiancées, Tim Kotrla and Lisa Castillo of Dallas and Justin Haynes and Jennifer Work of Abilene; a sister, Jacquelyn Chorn of Hermleigh; and a brother, Granville Chorn of Albuquerque, N.M.
Friends are contributing to the Hermleigh High School Scholarship Fund in Hermleigh, 79526; or to the American Cancer Society, Box 1396 in Snyder, 79550.
Ima Emerson
1922-2003
Ima L. Emerson, longtime Snyder resident, died Sunday, Nov. 9, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital.Funeral service for Mrs. Emerson, 81, is set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Henson, pastor, officiating.
Graveside service is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in the Rock Hill Cemetery in Quitman with the Rev. Arlis Banks, retired minister, officiating.Arrangements are under the direction of Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Born Jan. 10, 1922 in Quitman, she married William H. “Bill” Emerson on March 27, 1948 in Sweetwater.Mrs. Emerson was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Snyder.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Emerson of Snyder; a son, Widgeon C. Emerson of Quitman; two daughters, Ann Mueller of Fresno, Calif., and Mina McCutcheon of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two aunts, Sula Redden of Sweetwater and Willie Hayden of Quitman; a nephew, John Lingo of Quitman; a niece, Melinda Cain of Winnsboro; six grandsons, Richard Hudler and Vincent Hudler of Fresno, Rex Hudler of Tustin, Calif., Marcus McCutcheon of Huntington Beach and Justin Emerson and Dustin Emerson, both of Quitman; and six great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be from 6-8 this evening at Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Opal Spikes
1910-2003
Opal Spikes of Lubbock, a longtime Snyder resident, died Monday, Nov. 10, in Lubbock.Funeral service for Mrs. Spikes is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. Miller Robinson, retired minister of Colonial Hill Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.Born May 28, 1910 in Colorado City, she married Sam Houston Spikes on Nov. 4, 1928 in Colorado City. He died March 31, 1978.
Mrs. Spikes was a retired dietitian for the Snyder Independent School District. She was a longtime member of the Colonial Hill Baptist Church and the Retired Teachers Association.Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Russell Shannon of Levelland; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ford and Doris Spikes of Snyder, Jack and Brenda Spikes of Dallas and Sammy and Liz Spikes of Lubbock; 10 grandchildren, Rusty Shannon of Andrews, Doak Shannon of Levelland, Van Spikes of Aspermont, Shann Pierce of Snyder, Bob Spikes of Rotan, Kell Spikes and Mike Spikes of Dallas, Kristi Spikes of Los Angeles, Cindy Veldon and Cody Spikes of Lawton, Okla.; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.Family visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. today at Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Karl Menges
1968-2003
Karl William Menges went home to be with his Heavenly Father after he was involved in an automobile accident on November 10, 2003.
Karl was born in Orange County, California on September 10, 1968. He met his beloved wife, Laura, while attending Snyder High School and they were married on June 26, 1987 and celebrated 16 years together. They have four children, John, 15, Clayton, 12, Jacob, 10 and Victoria 7.
Karl learned the trade of building while attending Snyder High School and was considered a master builder/welder by all those who knew his work. He was greatly loved by his family and was considered by him to be the center of his world. A man who in the last years of his life had a deep love for his Savior, Jesus, and spoke of this love to those he came in contact with. He was a member of Paul Ann Baptist Church where he attended regularly with his family.
He is survived by his wife and children; and his parents, Murrel and Betty Menges of San Angelo; one sister, Kathie Boulware of San Angelo; two brothers, Danny Menges and Eric Menges, both of Longview; 14 nieces and nephews.A memorial fund has been set up for the family of Mr. Karl Menges at Texas Bank of San Angelo in lieu of sending flowers.Pallbearers will be Danny Menges, Eric Menges, Shawn Rhodes, John Menges, J.P. Banker and Chuck Hardgrave.
Family visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2003 at Paul Ann Baptist Church with Rev. Kirt Dauphin officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Johnson’s Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Odell Williams
1915-2003
A. Odell Williams, 88, died Monday, Nov. 10, in Snyder Healthcare Center after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Williams, a longtime resident of Snyder, is set for 1 p.m. Saturday in Colonial Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Dunkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Snyder Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Born June 21, 1915 in Kerens, Mrs. Williams was a retired school teacher and a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sedalia and Hulen Malone of Snyder and Blanche and the Rev. O.J. Archie of Midland; four sisters, Vera (Varie) Williams of Colorado City, Dorothy Daniel of Dallas, and Devora Knox and Tommie Wilson, both of Commerce; a brother, Sherman Wilson of Carrollton; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Dee Lockhart
1932-2003
Dee Harold Lockhart, a native of Scurry County, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Lockhart, 71, is set for 2 p.m. Friday in the Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry White, pastor of the church, and Walter McCall, Odyssey Hospice chaplain, officiating. Burial will follow in the Snyder Cemetery under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born March 11, 1932 in Snyder, he married Bobbie Magness on May 16, 1952 in Lovington, N.M.
A lifelong resident of Snyder, Mr. Lockhart worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years and was a member of the Faith Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and church treasurer.
Two brothers and six sisters preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Lockhart of Snyder; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Michael Goebel of Hermleigh; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Marilyn Lockhart of Snyder; three sisters, Beatrice May and Beryl Shuler of Sweetwater and Jessie Lockhart of Midland; three grandchildren, Kelli Harmon and her husband Brad of Garland, Chris Goebel of Snyder and Holly Goebel of Lubbock; one great-grandson, Will Harmon of Garland; a special son, Roy Magness of Snyder; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 this evening at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Odyssey Hospice, 1510 S. Gregg in Big Spring, 79720; or to the Cogdell Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Willard Parker
1935-2003
ODESSA -- Willard Ray Parker, a former Snyder resident, died Thursday, Nov. 6, at his home in Odessa.
Service for Mr. Parker, 67, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Jess Little officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Mr. Parker worked for Dickies Rental in Snyder from 1984-89. He was preceded in death by his parents, Blois T. Parker and Dorothy Houchins Parker Pasho; an infant son and a daughter.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Parker of Odessa; three brothers, Tommy D. Parker of Bedias, Texas, Charles M. Parker and John D. Pasho of Irving; and two sisters, Betty Chenoweth of Cody, Wyo., and Charlotte Dowell of McCaulley.
