Services for William "Bill" O. Holloway of Hockley, formerly of Tyler, were held at Burks-Walker-Tippit Funeral Home Chapel, Tyler, with the Rev. Kim Beckham officiating. Burial was in Tyler Memorial Park Cemetery. Holloway had died Dec. 23 in Tomball. Holloway was born in Wolfe City on May 2, 1918, and lived in Tyler for 31 years. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Tyler and First Methodist Church in Wolfe City. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 59 years, Lorene Holloway, in 1992. Survivors include his wife, Frankie Srouse Holloway of Hockley; sons, Bill W. Holloway and Haden Holloway, both of Houston; and two grandchildren.

Services were held yesterday for Joe T. Nelson of Wolfe City at Jones Walker Memorial Chapel in Commerce. Arthur Teal officiated. Burial took place at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie. Nelson passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the University of Texas Health Center of Tyler. Nelson was born on Nov. 9, 1944, in Sulphur Springs to Alvie Nelson and Lena Redman. He was employed as a truck driver for 30 years. He married Joyce Simpson on Jan. 2, 1963 in Brawley, Calif. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Joyce Nelson of Wolfe City; mother, Lena Hamric of Campbell; daughters, Amanda Cook of Longview, Rhonda Hobbs of Commerce and Wanda Wright of Wolfe City; son, Jody Nelson of Campbell; daughter, Wanda Wright of Wolfe City; sisters, Della Elmore, Lucille Petry and Martha Quisenberry, all of Campbell, and Lucille Petry of Cumby; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father and brothers, Jessie, Billie, Johnnie and Gene Nelson. Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Steven Michael Berger, 43

Steven Michael Berger of Cumby, born Nov. 1, 1957, in Dallas, passed away Dec. 25, 2000, after a lengthy illness. Berger is preceded in death by his father C. M. Scott, and brother Conrad Berger. He is survived by one daughter, Brandi Berger of Cumby, Texas; both mothers, Lilly Scott of Waxahachie, Texas, and Lucille Rose of Wylie, Texas; three brothers, Gerald Berger of Wylie, Texas, Ron Berger of McKinney, Texas, Gary Rose of Wylie, Texas; six sisters, Cathy Berger of Wylie, Texas, Brenda Chriswisser of Wylie, Texas, Carol Clark of Damon, Texas, Debbie Spruiell of Palestine, Texas, Bridget Rouse of Garland, Texas, and Marian Williams of Wylie, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. A private memorial service in Berger's honor is pending.

Funeral services were held for Julie Helen Hoffman of Commerce, on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Pemberton Funeral Home. Rev. Ben Smith officiated. Interment was at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie, Texas. Hoffman died on Jan. 3. She was born Julie Helen Kalinowski in Houston, Texas, on Dec. 5, 1945, to John Kalinowski and Ellen Marie Harris Kalinowski. She was married to Joel Hoffman on March 24, 1965, in Ft. Worth, Texas. Hoffman moved from Missouri to Commerce in 1981. She was a veteran of the United States Army and served as sergeant during the Vietnam era. She was a member of the England Grove Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents and her step-father, Lloyd Long. Survivors include her husband, Joel Hoffman of Commerce; daughter Anna Cowfer of Commerce; son-in-law John Cowfer of Commerce; son Michael Hoffman, of Emory; daughter-in-law Lisa Hoffman, of Emory; daughters, Joella Hoffman, September Rose Hoffman, Sarah Jane Hoffman and Julia Ann Hoffman, all of Commerce; son Bruce James Hoffman of Commerce; sisters, Virginia Sims of Austin, Elizabeth O'Neal of Garland, Gloria Lawley of Arlington, Patricia Senderling of Garland and Kelly Elizalde of Dayton, Ohio; brother, James Kalinowski, of Houston; sister-in-law Rebecca, of Wolfe City; several nieces and nephews and six grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers were Scott Baldwin, Kenneth Dayberrry, Melia Garner, Bart Deaton, and Ray Deaton. Memorials will be graciously accepted by the family in memory of Julie Helen Hoffman.

Rita Ann Jacobsen of Cumby died Dec. 30 at her residence. A Rosary service was held yesterday, Jan. 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Commerce. Memorial services will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father D. Stanley Corcoran officiating. Pemberton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born in Rochester, N.Y., on June 20, 1923, she was the daughter of George and Katherine Schreiner Goodberlet. She married Richard Jacobsen on Dec. 18, 1956, in Canandaigua, N.Y. She had lived in Cumby since 1971, having moved there from Garland. Jacobsen graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester, N.Y. She was a secretary to the president of the University of Dallas, at the time of its inception from 1955-57. She was very involved in children's programs with the Christian Bible Study in Sulphur Springs until her death. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Commerce. Survivors include her husband, Richard Jacobsen of Cumby; son, Rick Jacobsen of Rockwall; daughter-in-law, Penny Jacobsen of Rockwall; daughter, Rae Sowell of Monarch Beach, Calif.; son-in-law, Jesse Sowell of Monarch Beach, Calif.; daughter, Rhonda Jacobsen of Tustin, Calif.; brothers, George Goodberlet of Churchville, N.Y., and Alphonse Goodberlet of Blue Hill, Me.; and four grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
James Richard Riddle, Sr., 61

James Richard Riddle, Sr., passed away en-route to Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas on Jan. 1, 2001. He was born in Trinity, Texas, on July 11, 1939. He spent most of his adult life in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1971, and in education. He received his master's degree in special education from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. He is a past master of the Masonic Lodge in Pittsburg, Texas. He was a member of the Epiphany Episcopal Church and the Church Vestry of Commerce. He is survived by Lee Riddle, his wife of 44 years; one son, James R. Riddle, Jr., of Vidor, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and Michael Gill of Commerce; five grandchildren, Jaime Riddle, James Randall Riddle, Richard Gill-Young and wife, Amanda, and Thomas and Courtney Gill; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Reese Riddle and Tony Riddle of Houston, and John Riddle of Beaumont; one sister, Mary Lou Johannessen of Woodville, Texas; plus numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 4, at Pemberton Funeral Home. Services will be at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Commerce, Friday, Jan. 5. Interment will be at Kerens Cemetery in Kerens, Texas, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Jewel Evelyn Teel of Lewisville, Texas, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, at a local nursing home. She was a native of Alabama and a homemaker. Funeral services were held yesterday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Flower Mound. Interment followed at the Greenwood Cemetery in Ft. Worth, with Dalton & Son Funeral Home of Lewisville in charge of arrangements. Survivors include her son, Don Culver and his wife, Othella, of Lewisville; sister, Geneva Gehring of Tyler; brothers, Homer Barber of Canton and Ernest Barber of Midland; grandson, Michael Culver; stepsons, Willie Teel and James Teel; stepdaughters, Mildred Brown and Beulah Wheatley; nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Richard J. Carpenter, 77

Funeral services for Richard J. (Dick) Carpenter of Sulphur Springs will be held Monday, Jan. 1, in West Oaks Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mike House officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery in the Branom Community with Ronnie Branscome, Billy Sam Elliott, James Frank Jones, Bobby Carpenter, Robert Carpenter and Glendale Tucker serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Neal Archie Baker, Richard Clinton Baker, Donald Carl Baker and Max (Poss) Baxter. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. tonight at West Oaks Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs. Carpenter died Saturday, Dec. 30, surrounded by his loving family at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Hopkins County on April 18, 1923, the son of Emmett B. and Zella Box Carpenter. On Sept. 7, 1943, he married Sudie E. Baker in Corpus Christi, Texas. She preceded him in death in 1991. He was also preceded in death by twin daughters, Sherry Gale and Jerry Dale on May 13, 1945. Carpenter was a graduate of Cumby High School and attended East Texas State Teachers College where he was an All-Star basketball player. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1946. He was Executive Director for the Boy Scouts of America, Northeast Texas Southeast Oklahoma Council from 1946 to 1955. From 1955 until 1987, he was a sales representative for Great American Insurance of Dallas and worked closely with local businesses and school districts and individuals providing service and sales for their group and personal insurance needs. During the years 1946 to 1978, he was a member of the Southern Basketball Officials Association. For 32 years his fall and winter nights were spent at area high school basketball games and tournaments. His officiating partners through the years included Dub Reeder, Harlan Irvin, Vaden Richey and Joe Bob Chastine. He was also affiliated with Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church and worked as a director of Mt. Zion Cemetery for many years. Carpenter is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Ronnie Branscome of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Rickie and Billy Sam Elliott of Sulphur Springs. Grandchildren include Lee Anne and Weldon Smith of Grand Prairie, Texas, Randall and Penny Branscome of McKinney, Texas, William S. (Trey) and Jennifer Elliott of Paris, Texas, and Richard Joel Elliott of Sulphur Springs. He is also blessed with seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Mt. Funeral services for Luzelle "Pete" Pierce of Commerce are tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Jones Memorial Chapel. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until the service. Dr. Billy R. Webb will officiate at the services arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Rosemound Cemetery.
A retired sales clerk, Pierce was born in Blossom on Aug. 18, 1907, the daughter of John Jay and Sudie Hays Dunham. On April 28, 1927, she married Carl "Doc" Pierce in Greenville. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Cathy Dunham of Commerce; sister, Johnnie Sue Walls of Commerce; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother, Jules Verne Dunham.
