Pounders
Mildred Louise Pounders, 72, died Sunday, July 4, 2004 in Panama City, Florida in the Bay Medical Center.
Graveside services were held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 15 in the Hugh Wilson Cemetery in Tanglewood.
Mildred was born July 29, 1931 in Gonzales County to John and Louise (Frederick) Hasserodt.
She married Claude Cleve Pounders, Sr. on Oct. 14, 1954 in El Campo.
Mrs. Pounders was a homemaker from Fountain, Florida.
Preceding her in death were her husband on March 24, 2002, and her parents.
Survivors include two sons, Claude C. Pounders, Jr. and wife Sonja of Panama City, Florida, William D. Pounders and wife Judith of Fairfield; two daughters Wanda Sue Young Pounders of Groesbeck, Cynthia Kay Starkey of Abilene; one brother John Hasserodt of Vanderbuilt; one sister Magalene Blagg of Houston; sixteen grandchildren, two great grand-children.
Crump
Lubbock – Joe "Bailey" Crump, 85, of Lubbock died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Lakeside Rehab Center.
Graveside services were held Saturday, July 17, at 1 p.m. in the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
Mr. Crump was born on Nov. 21, 1918, in Rockdale.
He served in the U.S. Army, 507th Parachute Infantry, during World War II from October 1941 to December 1945. He was shot down west of Germany and was disabled due to his injuries. He received the European, African, Middle Eastern Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Purple Heart.
He was a building contractor in Lubbock and a lifetime member of the VFW.
He married Wynell Jones on Dec. 27, 1947, in Plainview. She died on Aug. 2, 1999.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wynell; two brothers, Silas and Paul Crump.
He is survived by a daughter, Carla Cook of Denver City; two grand daughters, Natalie Jean McCulley and Monya Lynn Howard; four great-grandchildren.
Bowley
CAMERON – Funeral Services for Mr. Hugh Dwain Bowley, 67, of Cameron, were held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, in the Kathryn W. Green Chapel of Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron with Rev. Robert Glenn officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cameron.
Mr. Bowley died Sunday in a Rockdale nursing facility.
He was born Dec. 3, 1936, to Rev. Hugh Marion and Ruth Victoria (Kinnison) Bowley.
Mr. Bowley was a member of New Beginnings Full Gospel Tabernacle in Cameron.
His parents preceded him in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Dutcher of Cameron and Tammy Worrell of Fort Rucker, Alabama; two brothers, Kenneth W. Bowley of Rock Hill, North Carolina, and Phillip Don Bowley of Belton; six sisters, Norma Ruth Crouch of Cameron, Mary Edna Davis of Malakoff, Patricia Glenn of Cameron, LaWanda Black of Malakoff, Linda Mayer of Cameron and Glenda Hays of Cameron; also, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Head
CAMERON – Juanita Head, 97 of Cameron and formerly of Harlingen, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 in a Cameron nursing center.
Services were held Friday, July 16, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home with grandson-in-law Rev. Jim Lafferty officiating. Graveside services and burial followed 10 a.m. Monday, July 19 at Restlawn Cemetery in Harlingen.
Juanita Head was born January 26, 1907 to John Paul and Hetty (Lewis) Owens in Mill Creek, Oklahoma.
In 1921, she moved to the valley, and five years later on May 16, 1926, she married J.L. Head. They were married for 69 years.
Mrs. Head was an avid golfer, and in 1935, she organized the first Women’s Golf Association in the Rio Grande Valley. Juanita Head was associated with the Life Begins at 40 Golf Tournament in Harlingen, and received the title of Rio Grande Ladies Golf Champ twice.
She was also active in working with the Girl Scouts.
Mrs. Head was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harlingen since 1942.
Preceding her in death are her husband J.L. Head, three sisters, one half brother, and three half sisters.
Survivors include three daughters Jean Head Tumlinson of Cameron, Dr. Nancy Head Bowen of Rockport, Linda Head Gray of Springfield, Missouri; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to charity of donor’s choice.
Smith
CAMERON – Edwardene Lovick Smith, 93, of Houston and formerly of Cameron, died July 16, 2004, in a Houston hospital. Graveside services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Edwardene Smith was born July 18, 1911, to Edward and Lela (Dukes) Lovick in Fairview, Oklahoma.
She was married to Monroe Smith, and worked as a secretary and clerk for Herman Estates in Houston for many years.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Houston.
Preceding her in death are her husband, and brother, and three sisters. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Gandy
CAMERON – Funeral services for Irene Virginia Gandy, 73, of Temple, formerly of Buckholts, were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron. Burial followed in Corinth Cemetery in Buckholts.
Mrs. Gandy died Sunday, July 18, at her home.
A beautician at Beauty Flair Beauty Shop, she was born Dec. 15, 1930, in Buckholts to Rudolph and Irene (Bounds) Zelisko.
She married Kenneth Gandy on July 31, 1948, and she was a member of the Highway 53 Baptist Church in Temple.
Survivors are her husband, Kenneth Gandy of Temple; a son, Jack Kenneth Gandy of Burleson; a daughter, Virginia Sue Wilkes of Plano; a sister, Marie Polzer of Temple; two grandchildren, Crystal Sellears of Temple and Charles Raymond Wilkes of Del City, Oklahoma; and two great-grandchildren, Raymond Anthony Wilkes and Angelic Jade Wilkes.
Fisher
Chris Fisher, 29, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005 at his home in Rockdale. Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Pastor Roy Dillard officiating. Burial followed in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.
He was born Oct. 2, 1976 in Bryan to Terry (McGoldrick) and Terry Lee Fisher.
Mr. Fisher worked as maintenance coordinator for Sam’s Club. He was a resident of Rockdale since June 2005. He was a 1995 graduate of Milano High School. He was also a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Bryan.
He was preceded in death by his uncle, John David McGoldrick; grandparents, J.D. and Mary McGoldrick; grandmother, Louise Woods.
Survivors include his mother, Terry Blackmon and husband J.D. of Rockdale; grandparents, Jim and Carol Blackmon of Milano; great-grandmother, Dorothy Nelson of Milano; brother, Jeremey Fisher of College Station; two sisters, Amanda Fisher of Rockdale and Crystal Fisher of Rockdale; nephew, Anthony Fisher of Rockdale; niece, Kyrsten Hartley of Rockdale.
Pallbearers included Jim Szumski, Destry Young, Dwayne Zboril, Jackie Johnson, Dustin Moore, Wesley Parker, Jeff Blackmon and Billy Barnett.
