Funeral services for Joyce Allen Wilson, 78 of Andrews, were at 4 p.m. Wednesday at McNett Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews with the Rev. Ted Short officiating. Burial was in Andrews North Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wilson passed away Friday May 14, 2004, at her home in Andrews.
She was born Nov. 1, 1925, in Fannette. She married John Shelly Wilson Sr., Dec. 8, 1944, in Beaumont. They moved to Andrews in 1971 from Tatum, N.M.
She was an artist. She and her husband worked as campground hosts in Colorado for 10 years after his retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
She is survived by her husband of Andrews; three sons, John Shelly Wilson Jr. of Santa Fe, N.M., and Lloyd Dale Wilson and Floyd Ray Wilson, both of Andrews; two daughters, Laura Keefer and Patricia Ann Wilson, both of Andrews; three brothers, Lonnie Allen of Houston, Patrick Allen of Alvin and John M. Allen of Fannette; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
James Smyers

Funeral services for James Vance Smyers, 75, of Levelland will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004, in McNett Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews with the Rev. Jesse Hodge, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Levelland, officiating. Burial will follow in the Andrews Old Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home of Andrews.
He died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at his residence in Levelland.
Mr. Smyers was born Dec. 26, 1928, in O'Donnell. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, where he was stationed in Alaska in the message center. He lived in Andrews from 1946-1986 and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years in Andrews, retiring as superintendent in 1986. He married Jo Porter in Harrison, Ark. He moved to Levelland in 1998. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, and was a member of the First Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife of Levelland; two brothers, N.M. Smyers of Lubbock and G.H. “Blackie” Smyers of Odessa; and one sister, Mary Catherine Wall of Albuquerque, N.M.
Memorials may be sent to the American Legion.

Graveside services for Clifton Joe Brown, 54, were held Friday at Andrews North Cemetery with Rev. Ted Short, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial was under the direction of Andrews Funeral Home.
Born March 22, 1949 in Seminole, he graduated from Andrews High School and worked as an electrician for Cass Fitts Electric.
Survivors include his mother, Jean Martin of San Antonio; father and stepmother, Eugene and Dorothy Brown of Andrews; brothers, Gary Allen of Midland, Aaron Allen of Andrews, Curtis Allen of Odessa and Amos and Kenneth Allen of Houston; sisters, Mary McCain of Andrews and Zelda Brown of Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services for Lucille Pryor, 83, of Andrews were at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004, in McNett Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was the Rev. Jeff Donnell, pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Andrews West Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.
Mrs. Pryor died in Andrews Thursday, July 15, 2004. She was born on July 31, 1920, in Loxsburg, Ark. She married “Jo Tom” Pryor on May 23, 1941, in Quilan. They moved to Andrews in 1953. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She worked for Permian General Hospital and for the Nursing Home in Andrews before retirement.
Mr. Pryor preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1983.
Survivors include her son, Don Pryor of Andrews; her daughters, Winnita Stallings of Pittsburg, Kan., Sue Cortney of Denver City, Peggy Pryor and Melodye Pryor, both of Andrews, and Penny McCullough of Eunice, N.M.; her sisters, Winnie Langford of Lubbock, Edith Carruth of Marble Falls and Juanita Clem of Sweetwater; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Gene Irwin

Services for Gene Irwin, 83, of Andrews were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in Means Memorial United Methodist Church. Dr. Brian Gordon officiated. Burial followed in the Andrews Old Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home of Andrews.
Mr. Irwin died in Andrews on Saturday, July 17, 2004. He was born on June 21, 1921, in Midland. His parents, Knox Hunter Irwin Sr. and Anna Lee Pinnell Irwin, were Andrews County pioneers. He married Hedy Price in Lovington, N.M., on April 8, 1993. Gene was involved in ranching with his father after being discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945.
Mr. Irwin served as commissioner of Precinct Two in Andrews County for 24 years. During this time, Andrews had a tremendous growth. During his terms, the county parks were developed, and the Little League and other ballparks were built. The Community Building, the Andrews County Youth Center and Scout facilities, the County Golf Course, improvements to the courthouse, rodeo grounds and airport facilities were a few of the many projects completed. He was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as Man of the Year in 1968. During the time of rearing his children, he and his children received many awards and recognition for their efforts and interest in 4-H and other Extension work. After leaving office as a commissioner in 1974, he expanded his ranching and farming interest. He served on the ASCS Committee and was still an active director (serving for 28 years) on the Andrews Soil and Water Conservation District No. 246.
He was a member of the Means Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife Hedy of Andrews; a son Doug and wife Terry Irwin of Andrews; two daughters, Susan Irwin Watts of Kerrville and Lee Ann and husband Pete Ballew of Andrews; six grandchildren, Derrick Watts, Max Watts, Coy Irwin, Tanner Ballew, Kacee Ballew and Bailey Ballew Morgan; two great-grandchildren, Conner Watts and Peyton Watts; step-children Bill Price, Karla Morris, Kay Wood and Claude Price, all of Andrews; 10 step-grandchildren and 22 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Lee Brown Irwin, on Nov. 2, 1987. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Chris Irwin, on Nov. 21, 2003; a brother, Knox Hunter Irwin Jr. in 1991; and a sister, Billie Irwin Edmiston in 1988.

Willard H. 'George' Turner

Graveside services for Willard H. “George” Turner, 88, of Andrews were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, in the Andrews Old Cemetery with Dr. Jeff Donnell, pastor of First Baptist Church in Andrews, officiating. Services were under the direction of McNett Funeral Home in Andrews.
He died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Permian Residential Care Center in Andrews.
He was born Feb. 28, 1916, in Wood County to Ernest Turner and Etta Stanley Turner. He married Mary Loudine Spigener on Sept. 15, 1939, in Quitman. They moved to Andrews in 1956. He retired as a driller from Norwood Drilling after 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 5, 2002. He was a member of the Andrews Masonic Lodge No. 1024 and the First Baptist Church in Andrews.
He is survived by two sons, Conrad Turner of Odessa and Alan Turner of Plano; two daughters, Dian Whittington of Mineola and Phyllis Duncan of Frederick, Md.; one sister, Maida Lindburg of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Manuela Moreno

Funeral services for Manuela “Mela” Moreno, 86, of Andrews, were at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Andrews with the Rev. Bernard Gully officiating. Burial followed in Andrews West Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.
Rosary services were at 7 p.m. Tuesday at McNett Funeral Home.
Mrs. Moreno passed away Sunday August 1, 2004 at Alliance Hospital in Odessa.
She was born May 18, 1918, in Pierdrasnegras, Mexico.
She married Antonio Moreno, and he preceded her in death in August of 1994.
She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Andrews. She was a member of the Legion of Mary, and the Women’s Club. She was active in Eucharistic Ministries, and she led the rosary for many families at the loss of a loved one.
She is survived by two daughters, Lydia Bueno of Andrews and Lucia M. Ayala of San Antonio; two sons, Juan Moreno of Aurora, Ill. and Victor Moreno of Andrews; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for Blanch Katherine Morgan, 84, of Andrews, were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2004 in the Andrews North Cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. Jeff Donnell, pastor of First Baptist Church.
She died in Midland Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004.
She was born on Nov. 30, 1919, in Hamlin. She married Henry Elmer Morgan on Oct. 12, 1940, in Peacock. They moved to Andrews from Peacock in 1952. Blanch was a homemaker and a member of the Second Baptist Church. Henry preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 2003.
She is survived by two sons, Don Morgan of Dallas and Buddy Morgan of Truth Or Consequences, N.M.; two daughters, Patricia Bryan and Lena Mae Wilson, both of Midland; one brother, William A. Elkins of Ontario, Canada; a sister, Johnnie King of Graham; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were under the direction of McNett Funeral Home of Andrews.
Bertha Askew

Services for Bertha Askew, 75, of Andrews were at 10 a.m. Saturday at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel in Lubbock with the Rev. Bruce Cotton officiating.
Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.
Mrs. Askew passed away Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, in Odessa.
She was born on March 19, 1929, in Kingsland, Ark. She married Terrell Askew on May 15, 1950, in Clovis, N.M. She provided childcare in her home for more than 25 years. She was a member of Full Gospel Church in Lubbock.
She is preceded in death by her husband; a son, Michael Earl Askew; a stepson, Wayne Askew; and a grandson, Jerry Don Tyler.
Survivors include a sister, Maxine Poss of Rison, Ark.; two daughters, Geraldine Tyler of Andrews and Marion Williams of Lubbock; a son, James Askew of Lubbock; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Vanessa Contreras, 7, of Andrews passed away Saturday, September 11, 2004, at Permian Regional Medical Center.
Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 15, at the Guardiola Law Firm in Andrews. Funeral Mass will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Andrews with Rev. Bernard Gully officiating.
Born September 19, 1996 in Andrews, she was a lifelong local resident. She was in the second grade at Devonian Elementary School and liked to play piano.
Survivors include her parents, Juan and Rosa Contreras of Andrews; one brother, Juan Raul Contreras, Jr. and one sister, Erica Marie Contreras, both of Andrews; grandparents, Arnoldo and Mariana Contreras of Andrews and Rosa Lira of Mexico; great-grandparents, Conception Ramon of Illinois, Delfina Zamora of Andrews and Getrudis Contreras of Mexico.
