Funeral services for Velma Mae Winchester, 90, of Andrews were held Monday, June 19, at McNett Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews with the Rev. Raul Puente and the Rev. Don Swindell of Star Hospice in Odessa officiating. Burial followed in Andrews West Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home in Andrews.
She died Friday, June 16, at Home Hospice House in Odessa.
She was born June 4, 1916, in Millersview to James Robert Starnater and Lena Billings Starnater. She was raised on the family dairy farm in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High School in 1936.
She married Monroe Bonner “M.B.” Winchester on Oct. 1, 1938, in Abilene. They moved to Andrews in 1956 from Odessa.
She was a homemaker and a Presbyterian.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and a brother.
Survivors include her daughter, Deborah Martin of Andrews, and three grandchildren.

Fr. Ray Stanley Wilhelm

Fr. Ray Stanley Wilhelm, OMI, 74, has gone home to chant God’s praises.
The son of Raymond M. Wilhelm and Alma (Dreier) Wilhelm, Ray Wilhelm was born on Feb. 3, 1932, in San Antonio. After graduating from St. Mary’s Parochial School, he went to St. Anthony’s Junior Seminary in San Antonio. He entered the St. Peter’s Novitiate at Mission in 1951, where he took his first vows on May 31, 1952.
His philosophy and theology courses were pursued at DeMazenod Scholasticate (now Oblate School of Theology) in San Antonio. It was there that he took perpetual vows on May 31, 1955. Upon the completion of his theology studies, he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Robert E. Lucey at St. Mary’s Church, San Antonio, on June 1, 1958.
Fr. Ray’s first obedience was in 1959 as a professor at DeMazenod Scholasticate. In the spring of 1960, he went to Catholic University in Washington, D.C., for higher education, and in November 1960, he went to the Studium Superius Generale in Rome. He then obtained a degree in canon law at Gregorian University in June 1962.
He was transferred to DeMazenod Scholasticate – Oblate College of the Southwest in San Antonio to serve as bursar and professor in September 1962. Other assignments included assistant pastor to Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Harlingen, pastor to St. Ignatius Parish in Ranchito, pastor to Sacred Heart in McAllen, associate pastor of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Brownsville and pastor to St. John the Baptist in San Juan.
In January 1986, he served as the associate director of the college-level seminary formation program at St. Edwards University in Austin. In 1988, he was assigned as parochial vicar to St. Louis of France Cathedral in New Orleans, then in 1990 to St. Patrick’s Parish in Houston. In 1991, he was associate director of San Juan Shrine in San Juan. He then served a six-year term as pastor at St. Ann’s in Colorado City.
In June 2000, he was assigned and remained until his death as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and Shrine in Midland.
Fr. Ray was also on official of the Matrimonial Tribunal of the dioceses of Brownsville, San Antonio and San Angelo. He was defender of the bond of marriage for the Texas Appellate Court in San Antonio and had also been a local Oblate Superior in several Texas districts.
“Fr. Ray was a committed and faithful servant of the Church, especially as Missionary Oblate to Mary Immaculate,” said Fr. Ed DeLeon, pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe. “He always gave 110 percent if not more. He was a true confessor, and people always felt God’s mercy, especially in the confessional. He was an excellent preacher and a good friend.”
Fr. Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Alma Wilhelm; his uncles, J.P. Wilhelm, Edwin Wilhelm, and E.V. Tumlinson; and his aunt, Maggie Schlein.
Survivors include his sister, Mary Oswald, and brother-in-law, Louis Oswald, of Houston; his three nephews, Brent A. Oswald of Houston, Kelly V. Oswald and wife, Stacey, of Houston and Louis A. Oswald and wife, Crystal, of Littleton, Colo.; and his dearest friend, the Rev. Frank Montalbano, OMI, of San Antonio.
“Fr. Ray was so special, so knowledgeable, so educated,” said Toni Bustillos, a parishioner at Our Lady of Guadalupe and a friend of Fr. Ray. “You could ask him anything, and he would tell you, and if he didn’t know, he would find out. He was so gentle and always such a loving and kind person.”
A rosary, led by Fr. Ed DeLeon, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and Shrine, was held on Friday, July 7, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and Shrine in Midland.
A Mass of Resurrection was held Saturday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the church with The Most Rev. Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI, Bishop of San Angelo, as the principal celebrant and Fr. Ed DeLeon as homilist.
Fr. Ray’s body was taken to San Antonio for additional services. A rosary was held at the Oblate School of Theology’s Immaculate Conception Chapel on Sunday, July 9, at 7 p.m. His Mass of Resurrection was celebrated on Monday, July 10, at 10 a.m. at the Oblate School of Theology’s Immaculate Conception Chapel, followed by burial at the Oblate Community Cemetery on the same grounds in San Antonio.
In lieu of flowers, make donations to Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in Midland.
Arrangements were under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home in Midland.
Art Tanner

Art Tanner, 60, of Andrews died Saturday, July 1, in an Amarillo hospital.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, at McNett Funeral Home Chapel with John Oliver officiating. Arrangements were with McNett Funeral Home.
He was born Jan. 22, 1946, in Calhoun, Louisiana. He married Lois Clark on Oct. 2, 1969, in Ruston, La. They moved to Andrews around 37 years ago from West Monroe, La.
Tanner worked in the oil field, retiring from Kirby West.
He was very devoted to his faith and was an active member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Arthur Tanner in 1985 and Jonathan Tanner in 1974.
Survivors include his wife of Andrews; a daughter, Amanda Loyd of Andrews; three brothers, E.L. Tanner of Eros, La., Preston N. Tanner of Andrews and Paul Tanner of Georgia; five sisters, Bertha Mae Powell, Bobbie Faye Demoss, Joyce Allbritton and Floy Mercer, all of Louisiana, and Pauline Halsey of Alabama.
Robbie Lee Fleck

Funeral services for Robbie Lee Fleck, 80, of Midland were held Monday, July 10, at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Midland. Graveside services were held Tuesday, July 11, at West Lawn Cemetery in Borger.
Arrangements were under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home of Midland.
Robbie passed away Friday, July 7, in Midland.
She was born Nov. 20, 1925, to Robert Elbert Haynes and Mattie Mae Parks Haynes in Texola, Okla. She was raised on a farm in Wheeler County and moved to Borger in the 1930s, where she graduated from high school in 1944.
After high school, she attended Chillicothe Missouri Business College before returning to Borger, where she met and married Bill Fleck in 1946.
In 1959, she and Bill moved to Odessa, where he worked as a manager for General Tire and Rubber Company. After Bill’s death in 1966, Robbie moved to Andrews and opened Robbie’s Books and Gifts downtown on the courthouse square.
After 25 years, she retired in 1999 and moved to Midland to be closer to her son and his family, as well as her sister, Judy.
Robbie was a person who loved cooking, gardening and collecting unique items. She loved and cared for all of God’s creations, large and small alike.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Don Haynes.
Survivors include a son, Mike Fleck and his wife, Cathy, of Midland; two brothers, W.C. Haynes and his wife, Joyce, and R.E. Haynes and his wife, Liz, all of Borger; a sister, Judy Browning and her husband, Bill, of Midland; two granddaughters, DeeAnna Werner and her husband, Richard, of Midland and Denise Sober and her husband, Joseph, of Lubbock; a grandson, Michael Fleck of Midland; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Jo Beatrice Craft

Services for Jo Beatrice Craft, 98, were held Monday, April 10, at Means Memorial United Methodist Church with pastor Rick Doyle officiating.
She died Thursday, April 6, in Allen at Victoria Gardens.
She was born in Barstow to Lela Alice and Curtis Fulcher. She married Jesse L. Craft in Carlsbad, N.M., in 1925.
The family moved to Iowa Park, Wink and Odessa, settling in Andrews in 1960.
She was a member of Means Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women and sang in the choir.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Survivors include three sons, Ellis Craft of Andrews, Roy Craft of Bay City and Joe Craft of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Kay Jeffreys of Plano; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Veldon Hudgens

Veldon Hudgens, 87, of Andrews died Friday, June 30, at Permian Residential Care Center in Andrews.
Graveside services were held Monday, July 3, 2006, at Andrews Old Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.
Hudgens was born Feb. 23, 1919, in New Boston, Texas. She married Truman “T.N.” Hudgens in 1934 in Dekalb. They moved to Andrews in 1941 from Hobbs, N.M.
She was a homemaker and a mother, and she loved her cats.
She was preceded in death by her husband, T.N. Hudgens, in 1973 and a daughter, Thresa Bell.
Survivors include two sons, Eddie Wayne Hudgens of Dumas and Butch Hudgens of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Glenda Hale of Plano; 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Fred E. Jones

Fred E. Jones, 75, a former resident of Andrews, died Thursday, June 1, in Fort Worth.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 3, at Southside Church of Christ in Fort Worth.
Jones was born in Goose Creek to Marion Jones and Frederick Earl Jones II on Feb. 21, 1931. He graduated from Paschal High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
He married Angie Bourland of Itasca, and they raised four children together.
Jones worked on the Apollo spacecraft at NASA in Houston and retired from the FAA while living in Andrews. He retired to Itasca, where he farmed the family homestead.
Survivors include his wife of Fort Worth; a daughter, Julie Jones of Fort Worth; three sons, Burton Jones of Broomfield, Colo., Bruce Jones of Mansfield and Mark Jones of Manvel; four sisters and nine grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southside Church of Christ (Fort Worth) pantry or the Foster Children’s Home.
