Mr. Cunningham
Russell Edgar Cunningham, 78, of Lytle died Nov. 27, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services were Dec. 1 at Lytle United Methodist Church. A graveside service followed Dec. 2 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors.
Mr. Cunningham was born Sept. 25, 1914, in San Antonio, to Jordan Lee and Mary Anna Caldwell Cunningham.
He was a retired major in the U.S. Army. He also was a retired claims adjustor and a Methodist minister.
He is survived by a son and his wife, Michael and Cris Cunningham, of Houston, and a son, Scott Gordon Cunningham, of Lytle; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Thomas Floyd, of Lytle; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Jack Burton and Akiko Cunningham, of San Antonio, and Gordon Lee Cunningham, of Lampasas; and a sister-in-law, Helen Martin, of San Antonio.
Mr. Cunningham was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Alexandra Louise; by a twin brother, Ray Davis Cunningham; an infant brother, Richard Lee Cunningham; and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Cunningham.
Pallbearers were Claude Brown, Kirk Jackson, Kyle Jackson, Bob Noack, Waylon Simmons and Amado Zamora.
Honorary pallbearers were Buddy Burris, Dr. Casey Cotant, Judge John Grothues, David Jurrs, John McGinnis, Todd Parkinson and Alton Stoutamire.
The family requested memorials be made to Lytle Friends of the Library or the Lytle United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall renovation.

Mr. Patterson
Gaither E. Patterson, 85, of Lampasas died Nov. 27, 2002, in a Killeen hospital.
Funeral services were Nov. 30 at Dodson Funeral Home in Lampasas with the Rev. Jim Standard officiating. Burial followed at Nix Cemetery.
Mr. Patterson was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Nix, to Gaither and Hattie Jeanette Tweedle Patterson.
He was reared in Lampasas where he was a rancher. Mr. Patterson married Nanelle Holley on Nov. 10, 1947.
He served in the U.S. Army and during World War II. He was a soldier in the 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion. In 2000, almost 55 years after their last battle together, the battalion received a Presidential Unit Citation for heroism in the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Patterson earned five Battle Stars and was twice awarded the Purple Heart for his service during the war.
He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Lampasas.
Survivors include three sisters, Sue Bodenhamer, of Naruna, An Ledbetter, of Stephenville, and Ernestine Gaylor, of Mansfield; and one brother, Billy Gene Patterson.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1994; by a daughter, Glenda Patterson; and by a son, Dickie Bob Patterson.

Mrs. Wittenburg
Mary Alice Close Wittenburg, 70, of Lometa died Nov. 28, 2002, at the family ranch.
Rosary was said Nov. 29 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Lometa. Funeral services were Nov. 30 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lampasas. The Rev. James Harnan, MSC, officiated both services. Burial followed at Senterfitt Cemetery in Lometa.
Mrs. Wittenburg was born May 26, 1932, in Shamrock, the daughter of Harvey and Alice Close.
She spent the majority of her childhood in the Shamrock area. She graduated from Shamrock High School and attended Texas Tech University, where she majored in home economics.
She was married to Frederick Gregory Wittenburg Jr. for 50 years.
In 1967, Mrs. Wittenburg began a 26-year career in education at the Lometa Independent School District. She retired in 1993, returning to her ranch.
She is survived by two daughters, Paula Wittenburg Sage and husband, Gary, of Smithville, and Mary Anna Wittenburg Beard and husband, Jesse, of Needville; sons, James Mark Wittenburg and wife, Janna, of Topeka, Kan., and William Michael Wittenburg and wife, Leslie, of Dripping Springs; eight grandchildren, Stacy Sage Meuth, Scott Sage, Brena Beard, Jared Beard, Greg Wittenburg, Blair Wittenburg, Preston Wittenburg and Sarah Wittenburg; three brothers, Jim, Edgar and Dan Close; a sister, Nance Close; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Grandchildren served as pallbearers.

Mr. Cothron
A memorial service with full military honors for John Cothron, 81, of Lampasas was Nov. 27, 2002, at Briggs-Gamel-Wilcox Funeral Home Chapel with Steve Timmerman officiating. The body was cremated.
Mr. Cothron died Nov. 23 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
He was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Miami, Fla., to George Bentley and Dorothy Knight Cothron.
Mr. Cothron married Mary Nicholes on Sept. 4, 1956, in Sumter, S.C.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1975. He was a World War II veteran and had served in China, India and Burma.
Following his military retirement, Mr. Cothron worked as a security guard until December 2001.
Mr. Cothron was a Christian. He had lived in the community for the past 11 months, moving here from Pinewood, S.C., where he had resided since 1988.
Survivors include his wife of Lampasas; one son, John Cothron II, and wife, Chantel, of Killeen; two daughters, Paula and Martin Wood, of Nashville, Tenn., and Donna Parker, of Sumter; one brother, George B. and Jean Cothron, of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Jones
A private family graveside service was held Nov. 25, 2002, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas for Robert Jones, 82, of Lampasas.
Mr. Jones died Nov. 23 at Park Place Care Center in Georgetown.
He was born June 15, 1920, in Simsboro, La., to James and Ophelia Cantrell Jones.
Mr. Jones was a World War II veteran. He served in Korea and Germany in the U.S. Army, retiring as a sergeant.
He had been a Lampasas resident for the past 20 years. He was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Curtis and Liz Jones, of Copperas Cove, and Joe and Charlotte Jones, of Florida; three daughters, Ann Jones-Ballard, and husband, Keith, of Lampasas; Becky and Tommy Grant, of Belton, and Wanda and Tim Hoel, of Mesquite; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
The family requested memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Hairston
Sarah Hairston, 86, of Alleyton, Texas, died Nov. 22, 2002, at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Texas.
Funeral services were Nov. 25 at Briggs-Gamel-Wilcox Funeral Home Chapel in Lampasas with Minister Reid Schaub officiating. Burial followed at O'Neal Cemetery in Lampasas County.
Mrs. Hairston was born April 4, 1916, in Cobb County, Ga., to Fred and Agnes Partain Durham.
She married O.L. (Sandy) Hairston on Nov. 7, 1942, in Walker County, Ga.
Mrs. Hairston was a retired hairdresser. She had been a member of First Baptist Church in Lampasas. She had lived in Alleyton for the past three years, moving there from Lampasas, where she had lived since 1979.
She is survived by a son and his wife, John and Marge Howard, of Killeen; a daughter and her husband, Bobbie and Curtis Berger, of Alleyton; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Barbara Blankenship, Sandy Berger, Amy Millsap, Mark Berger, Jody Berger and Robert Berger.
Mrs. Hairston was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, George Durham; and an infant daughter, Sarah Aileen Howard.

Mrs. Holder
Funeral services for Lynda Holder, 58, of Burnet were Nov. 24, 2002, at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Chapel in Burnet with the Rev. Max Copeland officiating. Burial followed at Gillum Cemetery near Oakalla.
Mrs. Holder died Nov. 22 at Seton Hospital in Austin.
She was born July 6, 1944, in Lampasas, the daughter of William "Andy" and Muriel Williams Cantwell.
Mrs. Holder served as assistant district clerk for several years and was active in many civic organizations. She was serving as the district president of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Service Organization and a longtime member of Epsilon Pi Chapter
She also was president of the Burnet County Democratic Club and was a board member of the American Cancer Society. She organized and implemented fund-raisers and door-to-door collections.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Holder, of Burnet; a brother, Randall Cantwell, and wife, Ann, of Oakalla; a sister, Rita Kincheloe, and husband, James, of Lampasas; nephews, Travis Cantwell, of Georgetown, Kyley Cantwell, of Nacogdoches; and numerous other relatives.
