Mr. White
Lometa resident Robert "Bob" White, 72, died Nov. 23, 2004, at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple.
A memorial service will be held Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. at Briggs-Gamel-Wilcox Funeral Home Chapel in Lampasas with William Matthew McDaniel officiating.
Mr. White was born Oct. 25, 1932, in Matador, Texas, the son of Lester and Ida Mae McMahon White.
He grew up and attended schools in the Lubbock area, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. White was president of the Texas Finance Company, a state association, and owned and operated his own finance company.
He married Lucille Blazek in Austin on Aug. 2, 1973. They resided the past 18 years in Lometa, where Mr. White was active in the community and operated a small business with his wife.
He served five consecutive terms on the Lometa City Council, and was instrumental in construction of the Lometa Municipal Building. He also coached and was a longtime supporter of youth athletics.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years of Lometa; four daughters, Julie Aylor, of Arlington, Blaine Shields and Ronnie Ault, both of Lometa, and Vickie Wooten, of Llano; a son, Jeff Wooten, of Llano; a sister, Shirley Mae Jones, of Lone Star; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Burkett
Funeral services for Joe Burkett, 79, of Evant will be Jan. 28, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Briggs-Gamel-Wilcox Funeral Home Chapel in Lampasas with Joe Banta officiating. Burial will follow at Townsen Cemetery near Adamsville.
Mr. Burkett died Jan. 26 at Hamilton General Hospital in Hamilton.
He was born Dec. 23, 1925, in Burkett, to Joe Bailey and Gacia Walker Burkett.
Mr. Burkett married Jaxene Banta on Aug. 16, 1944, in Lampasas.
He was a retired auto mechanic and a Christadelphian. He had lived the past seven years in Evant, moving there from Houston.
Survivors include his wife of Evant; one daughter and her husband, Annette and Troy Haltom, of Fruitport, Mich.; five sons, Billy Joe Burkett Jr., of Channelview, Robert Neal Burkett, and wife, Janice, of Phoenix, Ariz., Steven Bruce Burkett and John Howard Burkett, both of Evant, and James Paul Burkett, and wife, Cyndee, of Cedar Park; one sister and her husband, Audrey Jean and E.J. Chambers, of Lampasas; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. McVay
Perry W. McVay, 62, of Elgin died Jan. 17, 2005.
Funeral services were Jan. 19 at Elgin Funeral Home with Minister Paul Padroza officiating. Burial was at Youngs Prairie Cemetery at Elgin.
Mr. McVay was born Feb. 9, 1943, in Taylor.
He married Gayle Hess on June 19, 1965, in Lockhart.
Mr. McVay was a mortgage banker and a member of Central Christian Church in Elgin.
He is survived by his wife of Elgin; a daughter and her husband, Dena and Kelly Dunn, of Lampasas; two sons, Damon McVay and Cory McVay, both of Elgin; two grandsons, Jake Dunn and Kelton Dunn, both of Lampasas; a granddaughter, Regan Dunn, of Lampasas; a brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Shirley McVay, of Elgin; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Leaman
Funeral services for Jan Martin Leaman, 70, of Fort Worth are Jan. 28, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. at Greenwood Chapel in Fort Worth.
A graveside memorial service will be Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.
Mrs. Leaman died Jan. 25.
She was born Sept. 27, 1934, in Marble Falls, the daughter of Delbert and Stella Martin of Lampasas. She had lived in Lampasas until she attended Texas Christian University in 1952.
Other than the three years she spent with her husband in the U.S. Air Force, she lived the remainder of her life in Fort Worth.
She and her former husband founded their own corrugated box company in 1974, and she was active in the business until 1992.
Survivors include her children, Mark Leaman, and wife, Marie, of Boise, Idaho, Terri Thompson, of LaGrange, and Steve Leaman, and wife, Janan, of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Melissa, Andrew, David, Eric, Alex, Whitney, Zachary and P.D.; a brother, Gary Martin, and wife, Bennie, of Lampasas; numerous nieces and nephews; and the father of her children, Don Leaman, of Bedford.
The family requested memorials be made to the Salvation army, 2901 NE 28th St., Fort Worth, TX 76111, or to the charity of one's choice.

Mr. Smith
Elliott M. Smith, 78, of Long Beach, Calif., died Jan. 21, 2005, in Long Beach.
Graveside services are Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. at Smith Cemetery at School Creek with the Rev. Jerry Stratton officiating.
Mr. Smith was born Nov. 22, 1926, in Cuero. He volunteered for the U.S. Army during the last years of World War II, and served as a communications technician in Alaska.
Following his military service, Mr. Smith attended the University of Texas at Austin where he met his future wife, Ruth Lancaster.
The couple both graduated with a bachelor of arts in English prior to their marriage.
In his early years, Mr. Smith attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He pastored several churches in Texas and New Mexico before moving to California in 1967 to serve as pastor of Eagle Mountain Baptist Church.
In 1971, Mr. Smith became an association missionary for the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He served as missionary for Trinity Association in Riverside County, followed by service for Sequoia-Bethel Association in Tulare County.
While serving as missionaries in Tulare County, the couple sponsored the family of Laotian refugee Pastor (Moody) Sadudee Harichaikul. They brought the pastor's eldest daughter, Wilaiwan, into their home as a daughter.
Together, Mr. Smith and Harichaikul established the Lahu Baptist Mission in Visalia, Calif. Through the SBC Mission Board, Mr. Smith obtained a resettlement grant for Laotian refugees who came to the Visalia area.
The Smiths established an adult school where refugees learned English, math and job skills. During that time, Mr. Smith authored two books on Baptist history, "Advance of Baptist Associations Across America," published in 1979, and "Changing of the Guard," published in 1986.
Mr. Smith also taught extension classes for Golden Gate Baptist Theological Society, Mills, Valley, Calif.
Following his wife's death in 1992, Mr. Smith retired and moved to Long Beach to live with his daughters.
He is survived by two daughters, Cindy Smith and Nancy Smith, both of Long Beach.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Norman Elliott Smith.

Mrs. Shelburn
Funeral services for Lorene Benton Shelburn, 96, of Texarkana, Texas, are Jan. 21, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Lake Victor Church of Christ. Britt Farmer will officiate. Burial will be at Warner Cemetery in Burnet County.
Mrs. Shelburn died Jan. 18 at Heritage Plaza Nursing Center in Texarkana.
She was born Oct. 18, 1908, in Burnet County. She married Ray Shelburn in Burnet County and was a homemaker.
She had lived in Texarkana for two years, and prior to that she had resided in Greenville for four years, moving there from Coleman.
Mrs. Shelburn was a member of Rosehill Church of Christ in Texarkana and a member of the Home Demonstration Club.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Wendell and Shirley Shelburn, of Greenville; two daughters and their husbands, Alice and John Cooper and Gaylia and Calvin Coley, all of Texarkana; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992; by a son, Dalton Shelburn; and by a grandson, Ricky Almand.

Mr. Vaughan
James D. "Jim" Vaughan Sr., 76, of San Antonio died Jan. 16, 2005.
Funeral services were Jan. 20 at Sunset Funeral Home in San Antonio with the Rev. Brian Burns officiating. Graveside services followed at Smith School Creek Cemetery near Lampasas.
Mr. Vaughan was born Dec. 24, 1928, in Hondo.
He married Bonnie Burns in Adamsville in 1949.
Mr. Vaughan was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Huntington.
He later owned a Texaco Station on Austin Highway and was employed for 11 years by the San Antonio Express-News until he was unable to work.
Mr. Vaughan was a life master bridge player and played in tournaments all over North America.
Survivors include his wife; sons, James D. Vaughan Jr., Kenneth R. Vaughan, and wife, Yvonne, Robert W. Vaughan, John D. Vaughan, and wife, Trish, and Billy J. Vaughan; daughters, Barbara A. Prudom, and husband, Tom, Linda L. Andrews, and husband, Richard, and Sharon L. Balser, and husband, Mike; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara L. Malone, and husband, Sonny; and numerous nieces and nephews.
