Janie Kaye Clinton of Commerce, died Sunday at the University of
Texas Health Center at Tyler. Funeral services were Thursday at Pemberton Funeral Chapel in Commerce with Dr. Bobby Tollison and Dr. Billy Webb officiating. Burial is in Mount Zion Cemetery in Cumby.
Born January 8, 1948, in Dallas County, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Robbie Bradshaw Clinton. Clinton worked at Commerce Elementary School and at Draughn's Playschool.
She is survived by one daughter, Alice Welch Harris of Rowlett; one son, Anthony Eugene Welch, Jr. of Rowlett; one brother, Dr. Kenneth Lawrence Clinton, Jr. of Commerce; one sister, Barbara Clinton of Balch Springs; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents.
James "Jackie" Bolton, 58
Funeral services for James "Jackie" Bolton of Celeste were Friday at the First Baptist Church in Celeste with Rev. James Ralson and Rev. Bill Reisor officiating. Burial is in Memoryland Memorial Park in Greenville. Bolton died Tuesday at Greencrest Manor in Greenville. Taylor Funeral Home of Leonard was in charge of arrangements.
The son of James Clifton Bolton Sr. and Eva Ruby Wright Bolton, he was born Jan. 24, 1943, in Greenville. He was a mechanic and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Celeste.
Bolton is survived by his wife, Sue Day; a son, Chris Bolton of Commerce; daughter Cindy McBride of Greenville; two sisters, Ruby Mize of Napa, Calif., and Norma Rea of Las Vegas, Nev. and two grandchildren.
Alvin Clovis "Pete" Bruce, 92
Alvin Clovis "Pete" Bruce died Wednesday in DeSoto. Funeral services
were Friday at Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Rosemound Cemetery.
Bruce was born June 28, 1909, in Sadler, the son of Rufus Cleveland and Maude Pierce Bruce. He had lived in the Dallas area for 57 years. Bruce drove a dynamite truck as a child, layed brick on Childress streets and then went to work for the Fort Worth & Denver Railroad. He was later an automobile mechanic and owned and operated the Bruce Garage in Dallas for 30 years.
Surviving are a son, Al Bruce of Lancaster; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Traylor Bruce, in 1994; two brothers and two step-children.
Edward Lee Norris, 66
Graveside services for Edward Lee Norris of Commerce will be held tomorrow at Rosemound Cemetery with Rev. Kevin Brown officiating. He died at Spring Season Past Oak Care in Denison Dec. 28. Visitation is today from 5-7 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Home.
Norris was born in Mineola Sept. 8, 1935, the son of Jessa Lee and Zula Lee Adams Norris. He married Hazel James in Durant, Okla., Feb. 24, 1958. Norris moved from Colbert, Okla., to Commerce in 1962. He was previously employed at Levi-Strauss Manufacturing Co. in Denison, the Hi-Yield Plant and Manati Mobile Home Manufacturing Co. in Commerce and was employed in the maintenance department of East Texas State University until his illness in 1994.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Norris of Commerce; sons, Eddie Lee Norris, James Lee Norris and Adam Wayne Norris, all of Commerce; four sisters and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Gilbert Leon Pickel, 73
Gilbert Leon Pickel of Duncanville passed away Dec. 24. Born Feb. 18, 1928, he was a decorated Marine Corps veteran with service during World War II and Korea. Retired after a 35-year career with Borden Co., Pickel is survived by his sons, Kevin Pickel of Commerce and Keith Pickel of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Jessica Ennis, Kelly, Jamie and Katie Pickel and Taylor Ketcham.
Funeral services are Friday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. At Jaynes Memorial Chapel, 811 S. Cockrell Hill Road in Duncanville. Burial will follow at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27 at the funeral home.
Ida Mae Brown, 82
Ida Mae Brown passed away in Houston Dec. 18. Brown had retired from Texas A&M University-Commerce and resided in Jamaica Beach, Galveston for 20 years. She and her husband, Delmer, moved to Houston in August, 2001.
Brown is survived by her husband, Delmer Brown; daughter, Karen Schaefer and husband, Fred; sons, Roberts, and wife, Virginia, Danny and his wife, Georgia, and Chris and his wife, Debria; grandchildren, David and Lisa Schaefer, Bobby and Melissa Schaefer, Brandi and Bobby Hermis, Marni and Mike Janacek, Collin Brown, Lisa and Brady Basil, Shay Brown, Taylor Brown, Jacob Brown and Katie Brown; great-grandchildren, Kayla and Ryan Schaefer, Brittany Bradley, Bailey and Cody Hermis, Michelle Janacek and Laurel Basil.
Funeral services were held Dec. 21 at Spring Branch Presbyterian Church, with intermenty at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas. Waltrip Funeral Directors in Houston were in charge of arrangements.
Carmen Losa Pompa, 77
Carmen Losa Pompa of Commerce will be remembered with a graveside service at Rosemound Cemetery Thursday, Dec. 27 at 3 p.m. Visitation with the family will be held today from 2-4 p.m. At Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. He died at Baylor Hospital in Garland.
A retired Commerce policeman, Pompa was born in Commerce on June 18, 1924, the son of Damian Guerrero and Julia Losa Pompa.
Survivors include his daughter, Carmen O'Brien of Garland; two brothers, Miguel Pompa of Campbell and Jesse Pompa of Cumby; four grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Richard Lynn Calvert, 50
Richard (Dick) Lynn Calvert of Greenville passed away Dec. 8 due to complications from a motorcycle wreck on July 30, 2001. A memorial service was held Dec. 15 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Greenville with Rev. Mike Nichols officiating. His remains have been donated to Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Aly, Tommy Ferguson, Jim Gatlin, DeWayne Howard, Jack Liddell, Roy Neathery and Danny Phillips.
Calvert was born May 2, 1951, in Taylor, Texas. He graduated from Sulphur Springs High School and attended North Texas State University. He was currently a 16-year employee of Humphrey and Associates Electrical Contractors of Dallas.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Emily Hope Calvert; mother and stepfather, Jane Calvert and Deward Cagle of Lorena, Texas; grandson, Dylon Brown of Olympia, Wash.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Brian Ernest Brown, a six-year Marine veteran, who was killed in the line of duty as an LAPD police officer on Nov. 29, 1998; his father; and two brothers, Scott Calvert of Dallas and Bob Calvert of College Station.

Margaret Deloise Pope, 57
Funeral services for Margaret Deloise Pope of Commerce were held yesterday at First Baptist Church. Rev. Johnnie Henderson and Rev. Jimmy Rose officiated. Interment followed at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie. She died Dec. 15 at Mesquite Medical Center.
Born April 16, 1944, in Josephine, Texas, Pope was the daughter of Leslie Lee and Velma Julian White. She moved to Commerce from Farmersville in 1953 and graduated from Commerce High School in 1962. She married Larry Dean Pope in Commerce, July 19, 1962. She was a former employee of Jan's Hallmark in Commerce. Pope was a member of the First Baptist Church, the adult Sunday School Class and helped in the nursery. She was also a member of the Hunt County Doll Club.
Pope is survived by her husband, Larry Dean Pope of Commerce; her mother, Velma White of Commerce; son, Dwayne Pope and his wife, Lori, of Commerce; daughter, Denise Tuggle and her husband, Chuck, of Commerce; daughter, Christe McCarty and her husband, Daniel, of Texarkana; brothers, Ronald Lee White of Fairlie, Jackie White of Commerce and Monty White of Greenville; several nieces and nephews; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father.
Dr. Joe Goodwin, 61
Dr. Joe Lee Goodwin of Commerce died Tuesday at his residence. Funeral serviceswere Friday, July 13, at Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike House officiating. Burial followed at Rosemound Cemetery.
The son of Duard Barney Goodwin and Lois Elatia Freeman Goodwin, he was born Feb. 1, 1939, in Commerce. He lived most of his life in Commerce, graduating from Commerce High School in 1958.
He received his bachelor of science and master's degree in journalism and speech at East Texas State University and his PhD in journalism from the University of Denver.
Dr. Goodwin taught at the University of Texas at Arlington, their youngest instructor at that time. He also taught at the University of North Texas in Denton and the Elkins Institute of Broadcast TV and Radio, retiring after 30 years. He returned to Commerce in 1990. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Dr. Goodwin is survived by an aunt, Laverne McClure of Terrell and several cousins. His parents preceded him in death.
Pallbearers were Dave Carwell, David Williams, Bill Kennedy, Freddie Frazier and W.C. Ferrell Jr.
Memorials may be made to Freeman/Ferrell Endowment at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Louise Decou, 59
Louise Decou of Klondike passed away Wednesday morning, July 5, at Christus St. Joseph's Hospital in Paris.
Funeral services were yesterday, July 8, at the Delta Funeral Home with Rev. Mike House officiating. Interment and graveside services followed at the White Rose Cemetery in Wills Point.
Decou was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on Nov. 10, 1940. She was the daughter of Claude William and Elsie Benton White. She married Joe Decou on June 21, 1962. She had lived in Delta County since 1984 and was employed at Texas A&M University-Commerce as a secretary in the Financial Aid Office.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Decou of Klondike; son, Dennis Decou of Klondike; daughter, Anita Lee of Wills Point; and two sisters, Alice Faye and Aileen.
Delta Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ruby Edna Rountree Scroggin, 79
Ruby Edna Rountree Scroggin, aged 79, and a resident of Commerce and Athens for a number of years passed away Sunday, July 9, at a Dallas hospital. Scroggin was a member of the Eastern Hills Church of Christ where she taught bible study. She is remembered for her deep faith, her bible scholarship, and her wit and wisdom.
Scroggin grew up in Fairlie and Commerce, Texas, where she graduated from Commerce High School in 1938 and from East Texas State Teachers College with bachelor's and master's degrees. Her teaching career included experience in grades from first on up through the college level. She taught at Tyler Junior College, DuPage Junior College near Chicago, Ill., where she and her husband resided for over 20 years, Prairieview A & M University, and specialized English instruction to air traffic controllers in Houston. Scroggin was an accomplished artist and won prizes with her paintings at county art shows.
She is survived by her husband Alvin Scroggin of Rowlett, a 1940 graduate of Commerce High School; three daughters, Jan Davis of Mabank,
Julie Scroggin of Plano, and Jessica LeBeau of Rowlett. She is also survived by a brother, Rudy Rountree, Coppell; sisters, Jean Earls and Charlene King, Tyler; two sons-in-law, Ronnie Davis and James LeBeau; and four grandchildren: Neely, Trenton and Tyler Davis and Jeremy LeBeau.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Carroll Lehr Funeral Home with services on Wednesday, July 12, at Eastern Hills Church of Christ, 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Sonora Cemetery, Fairlie, Texas at 2 p.m.
