Funeral services for Thelma Talley Erwin of Commerce will be today at 1 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Rev. Mike House will officiate with intermenty following at Rosemound Cemetery. She died July 3 in Bonham. Pallbearers are John K. Smith, Rick Poston, Kenneth Foust, Danny Duncan, Herman Bennett III and Gene Casselberry. Honorary pallbearers are Waylon Dickerson and Steven Fisher. Erwin was born in Leonard, Texas, on Feb. 2, 1913, the daughter of Johnny and Oma Ella Chesser Hill. Erwin moved to the Commerce area from Pecan Gap in 1934. She attended public school in Wolfe City. She was co-owner and operator of Talley Automotive in Commerce from 1934-1978. She retired in 1992. She married Leon Bryan (Lee) Talley on July 7, 1934, in Oklahoma, and Preston Erwin in January 1976 in Oklahoma. Erwin was a member of the First Baptist Church in Commerce. Survivors include her sons, Don Talley of Commerce and Bill Talley of Giddings, Texas; daughters, Anna Crouch of Euless, Densel Crumby of Bonham, Carolyn Philpot of Lone View, Joyce Isaacs of Commerce and Kay Oglesby of Yukon, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Marion A. White, 79
Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. in Pemberton Funeral Chapel in Commerce for Marion A. White of Fairlie. He died July 2 in Fairlie. Rev. Clifton Julian, Rev. B.J. Ring and Roy Lee White will officiate at the service, with intermenty following at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie. Pallbearers are Ric Estes, Lanny Rainey, Joe Swinson, Lanny Swinson, Larry Swinson and Ronny Swinson. White was born on Jan. 19, 1921, in Hunt County, the son of Harvey and Lillian Fanning White. On Nov. 20, 1948, he married Marzee Stone in Commerce. White was a lifetime resident of the Commerce and Fairlie area. He was a graduate of Fairlie School. He was a veteran in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant. He also served in the regular U.S. Army during the European and Pacific Theater and rank of corporal. He was formerly employed at Automatic Gas Company for 27 years and retied in 1986. He was also a farmer. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the Commerce IOOF Lodge. He was a member of the Fairlie First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Marzee White of Fairlie; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Gary Hendrix of Fairlie; brother-in-law, Bill Lands of Commerce; brother-in-law, Kenneth Johnson of Azle; sister-in-law, Valee White of Lindale; two grandchildren, Cody and Katie Hendrix; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Marvin and Dick White; two sisters, Marie Lands and Maydell Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Louis and Rogene Swinson, Mary Walker, Truitt and Maudine Bishop, Daryl Belcher and members of the Commerce IOOF Lodge. Linda Jean Chaney, 55
Linda Jean Chaney of Commerce died June 28 in Commerce. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. yesterday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike House and Joan Humphries officiating. Burial followed in Rosemound Cemetery. Born Nov. 15, 1944, in Hunt County, she was the daughter of James M. and Nadine Surratt Williams. She married Frank "Scoot" Chaney, Jr., on Sept. 18, 1964, in Texas. A lifetime resident of Commerce, she graduated from Commerce High School in 1963. She attended East Texas State University and was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She was a charter member of the Thalian Club. Chaney was a cosmetologist for 20 years and was owner/operator of Chaney's Tobacco Station, with other stores in Athens and Corsicana. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Frank Chaney, Jr., of Commerce; mother and stepfather, Nadine and Willie Pierce of Commerce; mother-in-law Ann Chaney of Garland; a son, Trey Chaney of Commerce; sons and daughters-in-law Kirk and Danielle Chaney of Colleyville and Chad and Katheryn Chaney of Georgetown; brother and sister-in-law David and Ann Williams of McKinney; sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and George Boynton of Andrews; and two grandchildren. Her father preceded her in death in 1982. Pallbearers were Jackie Arnold, Danny Duncan, Tim Kolacheck, James Moore, Ted Oats, Philip Rhodes, Doug Roberts and John K. Smith. Willard R. (Bill) McDaniel, 66
Dr. Willard R. "Bill" McDaniel of Commerce died June 28. There is a memorial service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at the Performing Arts Center at Texas A&M University-Commerce with Rev. Mike House officiating. Born June 9, 1934, in Hammond, Ind., he was the son of Theodore Lewis and June Lucille Rich McDaniel. He graduated from York Community High School in Elmhurst, Ill., in 1952 and was very active in scouting during school, becoming an Eagle Scout. He then attended Miami University of Ohio where he was a member of Theta Chi social fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, scout and service fraternity, and Sigma Gamma Epsilon, geology honorary. McDaniel earned his bachelor of arts degree in 1956 and his master of science degree in 1957, both in geology. He worked for Lion Oil briefly before doing more graduate work at the University of Utah. He worked as a Park Ranger at Yellowstone National Park during the summers of 1959 and 1960 before moving to Commerce to become part of the East Texas State University faculty in the Earth Science Department, serving as a graduate assistant from 1959 to 1963. He attended Texas A&M University in College Station from 1963 to 1967 and earned his Ph.D. in meteorology. McDaniel returned to Commerce as a professor in the Earth Science Department from 1967-84 and served as the department head from 1972-1982. In 1984, McDaniel became a part of the Physics Department. In May 1996, he retired and was named a professor emeritus at the university. His committee service while at the Texas A&M University-Commerce included Faculty Senate, Graduate Council, University Interscholastic League, the scholarship committee and TACT. He was named Teacher of the Year by TACT in 1986. He was a member of Sigma XI, Texas Association of College Teachers, American Meteorological Society, Metroplex Science Teachers and the Science Teachers Association of Texas. McDaniel was also a member of the Commerce Lions Club, serving as the club secretary for many years and as the club president 1985 to 1986. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Marc and Dr. Mary McDaniel of Commerce; daughter and son-in-law, Marcie and Chester H. Magruder, Jr., of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Megan, Melissa and Molly McDaniel of Commerce and Caitlin, Daniel and Chester Magruder III of Tucson, Ariz.; special friend Janet Williams of Commerce; brother and sister-in-law, Theodore L. and Carol McDaniel of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and two nieces and two nephews. McDaniel was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, directed to Malignant Melanoma Research and the Texas Lions Camp for crippled children, P.O. Graveside services for Laura Lynn Chapin of Commerce were held yesterday at 2 p.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park in Sulphur Springs. Rev. Cary Kinnaird officiated at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home of Commerce. Chapin died on June 29 in Greenville. Chapin was born on Sept. 14, 1968, the daughter of Toby Mack Kleeschulte and Virginia Cox Lumpkin, in Columbus, Miss. She had lived in Commerce since 1972, having moved from Malta, Texas. She graduated from Commerce High School in 1987. In 1990, she graduated from Greenville Beauty School. Chapin attended East Texas State University from 1994-1997, majoring in education. She was owner and operator of Amy's Cost Cutter Beauty Salon in Commerce. She had married Eddie Jack Chapin, Jr., in Sulphur Springs on June 14, 1996. She was Baptist by faith and attended Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Commerce. Survivors include her husband, Eddie Jack Chapin, Jr. of Commerce; son, Evan Clay Chapin of Commerce; mother and step-father, Virginia and Lawrence Robert Lumpkin of Commerce; mother-in-law, Jan Bevis Chapin of Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Clara Mae Burden of Pecan Gap and Amelia Leanda Lumpkin of Commerce; three brothers, Skip Che Kleeschulte of San Antonio, Lawrence Sherlock Lumpkin of Commerce and Clint Wade Lumpkin of Commerce; two sisters-in-law, Amy and Mack Doster of Sulphur Springs and Carin Sue Chapin of Commerce; grandparents-in-law, Jack and Lois Chapin of Commerce; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Hanna Marie Chapin in June 1997; her father, Toby Mack Kleeschulte; her father-in-law, Eddie Jack Chapin, Sr. on Sept. 10, 1998; and her grandmother, Clara Alene Richardson on May 25, 2000.

Funeral services for J.D. Cooper of Commerce will be held tomorrow, July 3, at 2 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Rev. James W. Anderson will officiate and intermenty will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Home. Cooper died June 30 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paris. Pallbearers will be Larry Cooper, Richard Glenn Cooper, Troy Jones, Steton Clayton, Braden Clayton and Johnathan Edwards. Cooper was born on June 23, 1926, the son of Sam and Evia Maloy Cooper. He had lived in Commerce since 1966, having moved from Dallas. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was self-employed for 35 years as a roofer and retired in 1985. He was Assembly of God by faith. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank, Guy and Richard Cooper; and two sisters, Gracie Wright and Annie Koones. Cooper is survived by his wife, Ruby Moore Cooper of Commerce; son, Jerry Cooper of Commerce; daughters, Janice Keller of Sulphur Springs, Judy Prince of Commerce, Teresa Clayton of Commerce and Tawana Cuarenta of Dike; brother, Raymond Cooper of Sulphur Springs; sister, Mamie Ray Jones of Commerce; 10 grandsons, Nathaniel, Chris and Jason Keller of Sulphur Springs, Brian, Johnathan, Kevin and Wesley Edwards, Steton and Brandon Clayton, Stephen Cuarenta and Jessie Eugene Dafft, all Commerce; three great-granddaughters, Kelsie Keller, Brooke Keller and Britney Keller; and one great-grandson, Zackrey Edwards.
Tresa Lee Groves Hammons, 42
Graveside services for Tresa Lee Groves Hammons of Paris were held Tuesday, June 27 at 2 p.m. in New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Wise Funeral Home in Bonham. Hammons passed away Sunday, June 25, at her residence in Paris. Hammons was born on July 4, 1957, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of Thomas Lee Groves and Faye Watley Groves. Hammons was of the Baptist faith. Hammons is survived by her father, Thomas Lee Groves of Denison; mother, Faye Groves of Ravenna; sons, Thomas Lincoln Withrow and Russell Hammons, both of Birthright; daughter, Misti Withrow Ogles; sisters, Joanie Carrington of Dallas and Tamberly Calame of Lamasco; and granddaughter, Carley Withrow. Pallbearers were Newman Caldwell, Doug Calame, Oscar Vandeventer, Randy Williams, Ricky Williams and Chad Watkins.
Goldie Wells Millsap, 94
Funeral services for Goldie Wells Millsap of Brashear were held Friday, June 16, at Tapp Funeral Home Chapel in Sulphur Springs. Rev. David Burns and Rev. Robert Burns II officiated. Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Cumby, with Blake Smith, Barry Smith, Bart Millsap, Randy Millsap, Michael Phillips and Steve Tips serving as pallbearers. Millsap died at her residence on Wednesday, June 14. Millsap was born in Como on Sept. 20, 1905, the daughter of Jay and Ellen Byrd. She married Albert Q. Millsap on May 21, 1921, and they resided in Brashear. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years on June 10, 1993. A long time resident of Brashear, she was a homemaker and devoted her life to caring for her family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was a Christian and member of the Brashear Baptist Church. Millsap is survived by five children, Junior Millsap of Cumby, Weldon Millsap of Brashear, Mary Smith of Brashear, Margaret Ragan of Miller Grove and Gertrude Brand of Brashear. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. In addition to Mr. Millsap, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, one daughter and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to Hopkins County Hospice or Cypress Basin Hospice.
Helen Petersen Walker, 83
Helen Peterson Walker of Stamford, Conn., passed away Monday, June 12, at Smith House Health Care Center in Stamford due to lung cancer. Born in Stamford, Conn., March 28, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Elisa Pedersen Petersen. She lived between Greenwich and Stamford all her life. She was a private duty nurse; she worked for Stamford Hospital and Norma Hoffman Bearing Co. as a factory nurse and also worked for Dr. Saul Friedbert. She served in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps during World War II and was stationed at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colo. Walker was a member of St. John Episcopal Church. She was a graduate of the Darien Elementary School, Greenwich High School and Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing. She was also a member of the Greenwich Hospital Nurses Alumni Association and was one of the charter members and past presidents of the Stamford Emblem Club #53. She is survived by son, Dick Walker of Commerce; grandson, Mike Walker of Mabank; great-granddaughter, Marissa Walker of Mabank; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marion P. Zwart and five brothers, Arnold, Irving, Frederick, Howard and George Petersen. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 19, at St. John Episcopal Church, Stamford, Conn. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery in Stamford. James Hulon Witcher, 89
Funeral services for James Hulon Witcher of Commerce were held Saturday at Rosemound Cemetery. Rev. Bobby Tollison officiated at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Witcher was born in Hunt County on April 21, 1911, the son of James Calvin and Fannie Mae Sandel Witcher. On May 10, 1931, he married Margrette Mims in Hugo, Okla. A long time resident of Commerce, Witcher was a veteran of World War II. He received his Bachelor's and Master's of Science degrees from East Texas State Teacher's College. He was a teacher and principal of Wills Point Independent School District and other schools in the area. He was member of the First Baptist Church. Witcher is survived by his sister, Dorothy Balew of Mesquite and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Margrette Witcher, Nov. 5, 1990.
Margaret Peggy Rabb, 74
Funeral services for Margaret Peggy Rabb of Commerce will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Chapel in Wolfe City. Rev. Eldon Chester, Rev. Mike House and Rev. Suzanne Field Rabb will officiate at the service arranged by R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Rabb's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Rabb was born on July 31, 1925, in New Britton, Conn., the daughter of Clinton Tyler Wood and Margaret Flood. She married Joel Alexander Rabb at Bolin Field in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 25, 1944. Rabb was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church at Wolfe City. She died June 10 at Baylor Medical Center. Survivors include her husband; daughter and son-in-law, Della and Steve Ging of Lodi, Calif.; sons, Joel Rabb and wife, Beth, of Columbus, Ohio, Clinton Rabb and wife, Suzanne, of Austin, and Robert Rabb and wife, Tina, of Commerce; and 10 grandchildren.
Doug Martin, 82
Funeral services for Doug Martin of Campbell will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Prairie Valley Baptist Church near Lone Oak. Rev. Interment will follow in the Prairie Valley Cemetery with Ray Dooley, Ben Dooley, John Dooley, Steve Byrd, Robert Byrd, Ken Byrd and James Moore serving as pallbearers. Martin was a member of the Prairie Valley Baptist Church, a retired quality control engineer and served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II. He passed away June 5 in the Methodist Hospital of Dallas. He was born on Jan. 25, 1918, in Gilmer, Texas, to Gabriel Franklin and Clyde Pounds Martin. He earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University at College Station. Survivors include his son, Charles Douglas Martin, Jr. of Campbell; daughters, Martha Lou Dalton of Bedford and Margaret Sue Crouthamel of Boerne, Texas; brother, Dial Franklin Martin of Bryan; five sisters, Louella Hughleen Rainbolt of Gilmer, Geneeva Laird of Tyler, Alice Ruth Murphy of Garland, Sara Lou Barnes of Mesquite and Billie Hill of Plano; grandchildren, Tammy Dodd, Elizabeth Stevens, Heather Martin, Christie Marie Martin, Barney Graham, Tommy Dodd and Shaun Dodd; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Bradford was born in Hunt County on April 8, 1932, the daughter of William Earl and Harriott McManus McClendon. On Dec. 24, 1982, she married Charles A. Bradford in Cumby. She worked at Haggards for 17 years and at Sherwood for 10 years. Bradford was a member of the First Assembly of God Church. Survivors include her husband, Charles A. Bradford of Commerce; son, Danny Earl Daniels of Rosenburg, Texas; one stepson; three stepdaughters; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-laws, Martha and Gene Cunningham of Cumby and Jo and James Jackson of North Richland Hills; brother, Richard McClendon of Brant Rock, Mass. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, an infant daughter and three brothers.
Joseph Don Causey, 18
Graveside services for Joseph Don Causey of Cumby were held at 2 p.m. yesterday in the Brashear Cemetery with Rev. Wes Dean and Rev. Glen Beville officiating. Pallbearers were Tim Causey, Casey Causey, Cliff Gloar, Mike Smith, Wesley Winstead and Murphy Howle. Causey passed away Thursday at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Causey was born on June 10, 1981, in Sulphur Springs to William Don and Christine Andrews Causey. Survivors include his bother and step-father, Christine and Charles Duggan of Dumas; father, William Don Causey of Yantis; brothers, Matt and Cord Causey of Dumas and Cody Causey of Dalhart; grandparents, Dalton (Rabbit) and Betty Andrews of Cumby. Murrary-Orwosky Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs was in charge of the arrangements.
Clifford Clark, 85
Funeral services for Clifford Clark of the Nelta Community will be held today at 2 p.m. in West Oaks Funeral Chapel in Sulphur Springs, with Malcomb King officiating. Interment will be in the Nelta Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roy Herman, Jr., Ellery Johnson, Ben Hargrave, Mike Flippin, Russell Van Bibber and Steve Clark. Masonic graveside services will be held under the auspices of Sulphur Bluff Masonic Lodge #246 AF & AM. Clark, who died at his residence on Friday, was born in the Fabice (Oak Dale) Community of Hopkins County on July 13, 1914, the son of Albert Carr (Buddy) and Fannie Marie Lynch Clark. He was a life-long resident of Hopkins County and was a retired supervisor with Cannon Craft Manufacturing, being employed for 19 years prior to his retirement in 1976. Clark was a longtime faithful member of Nelta Church of Christ. He was a member of Sulphur Bluff Masonic Lodge #246 AF & AM, a member of Sulphur Springs Chapter #63 R.A.M. and Sulphur Springs Council #44 R&SM. He was a 50-year Mason. Clark was married to Susie Verda Hargrave in the Nelta Community on Feb. 9, 1934. She preceded him in death on Aug. 26, 1995. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Al and Cornice Clark of Paris; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Gary Stevens of the Nelta Community; sister, Eva Brietha of Maui, Hawaii; four grandchildren, Steve Clark, Julie Rodgers, Pam Hope and Laura Van Bibber; and four great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made by West Oaks Funeral Home.
Dr. Robert Lee Jones, 106
Dr. Robert Lee Jones, retired former head of the East Texas State University History Department, died Tuesday afternoon, May 30, in Euless at the age of 106. A native of Italy, Texas, he attended Henderson-Brown College and Southern Methodist University (B.A., 1917) earning an M.A. degree from the University of Texas in 1920 and his Ph.D. degree in 1923 from Stanford University in California. Author of "The Eighteenth Amendment and Our Foreign Relations," (Crowell, 1933), "History of the Foreign Policy of the United States," (G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1933) and numerous articles in scholarly journals, he was especially well known as a specialist in United States diplomatic history. Dr. Jones came to East Texas in 1939 from Trinity University, where he had been head of the department of history and government, and served at E.T. until his retirement in 1964. Mrs. Jones, the former Pauline Huff of McCory, Ark., preceded him in death. During their years in Commerce, Dr. and Mrs. Jones played an active role in community affairs and as members of the First Presbyterian Church. From their home on Bois d'Arc Street just off the campus, they dispensed a generous hospitality. For a number of years Mrs. Jones served as social reporter for The Commerce Journal. Following retirement to be nearer their children they moved to Arlington where they continued to be active in civic and church affairs. Though they lived away for many years Dr. and Mrs. Jones are well remembered and have been much missed in Commerce. Alert and continuously fascinated by the world around him, Dr. Jones before his death took a measure of pride in being recognized as the oldest living Rotarian. Clark is survived by a son and daughter, Robert H. Jones and his wife, Rena, of Hurst and Paula Juengerman and her husband, John, of Euless; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held in the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Arlington Friday evening. Memorials may be made to the Robert Lee and Pauline Huff Jones Scholarship Fund, Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Ark., 71999.
