Ray Hicks, 81, a retired dairyman and businessman, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at home. Funeral services were Tuesday, May 30, at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Chapel. Burial followed at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park. Hicks was born August 11, 1918, in Tarrant County. He lived in Tarrant County all of his life. He owned and operated the Euless Feed Store from 1971 to 1982. He was a member of the Airport Freeway Church of Christ in Euless. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ithama Hicks of Colleyville; son, J.R. Hicks and wife, Carol, of Sunset; daughter, Linda S. Reynolds and husband, Herb, of Richland Hills; brother, Marvin Hicks of Euless; sister, Marie Huffman of Commerce; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Ruby Ellen Fields, 77
Funeral services for Ruby Ellen Fields of Commerce were held yesterday at First Baptist Church of Commerce. Dr. Bobby Tollison and Rev. Tom Griffin officiated at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Interment followed at Rosemound Cemetery. She died May 27 at St. Joseph Hospital in Paris. Pallbearers were grandsons, Jay Webb, Erin Webb, Kelly Webb, Mike Webb, Tracy Cleckler, Randy Christopher, Kevin McCormick and Stephen Fields. Fields was a homemaker who worked for home health service caring for the elderly. She retired from the Commerce ISD Food Service, as well as East Texas State University. She devoted her time to helping and caring for friends and family. Fields was born on Sept. 18, 1922, in Bonham, the daughter of John Henry and Nannie Mae Maples Hornsby. She married Cecil Earl Fields in Denison, Texas, on Feb. 8, 1940. Fields was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. Survivors include her husband, Cecil E. Fields of Commerce; daughters, Sue Webb of Sulphur Springs, Mae Cleckler of Georgetown, Earlene Smerud of Lubbock, Linda Flanagan of Commerce and Pat McCormick of Lubbock; son, John Earl Fields of Wilson, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Delbert Hornsby and Lee Hornsby; sisters, Billie Price, Marie Humphries, Mildred Webster and Carrie Richardson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Lena Hannah. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1401 Washington Street, Commerce, Texas 75428.
Fae Fisher, 83
Funeral services for Fae Fisher of Cumby were held yesterday at 2 p.m. in West Oaks Funeral Chapel. Rev. Jacqueline Harmon and Rev. Don Brummitt officiated. Interment was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Cumby. Fisher died May 27 in Park Haven Nursing Home in Greenville following an illness of several weeks. She was born in Hopkins County on May 7, 1917, the daughter of Dow and Virgie Jo Ardis Harris. She married Denver Fisher on Nov. 7, 1936 in Cumby. He preceded her in death in 1987. Fields was a homemaker and she and her husband were involved in the farming industry prior to their retirement. She had graduated from Sulphur Springs High School. Fields was a member of Ridgeway United Methodist Church. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ronnie Petty of Cumby; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Helen Fisher of Sulphur Springs; seven grandchildren, Larry Steve Fisher, Jr., Sue Nell Anderson, Linda Gail Throndson, Missy Michale "Fisher" Garner, Christy Fae Petty, Tara Lynn Petty and Lisa Deann Petty; three step-grandchildren, Robyn Follis, Angie Dunn and Rick Phillips; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Hildred Lois Ainsworth Shaw, 83
Hildred Lois Ainsworth Shaw of Klondike passed away Sunday, May 28 at the McCuistion Medical Center in Paris. Funeral services were yesterday at the Delta Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Strickland of Commerce and Jimmy Rose of Greenville officiating. Interment was in the Shiloh Cemetery. Pallbearers were Darren Moore, Monty Moore, Tommy Chalaine, Randy LaJaunie, Heath Shaffer, Hadley Shaffer and Brian McPherson. Shaw was born in Yowell, Texas, on Sept. 9, 1916. She was the daughter of Lee Roy Alexander and Mary Pearl Rainey Alexander. She was a retired custodian, working for Texas A&M University-Commerce. She married Archie Marion Ainsworth and he preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1986. She later married Edgar P. "Bill" Shaw and he preceded her in death on April 5, 1994. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Marion and Pat Ainsworth of Cooper; daughter, Kathy Shaffer of Klondike; daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Lenton Moore of Commerce; stepson, Clifford Shaw of Mendicino, Calif.; sister, Nadella Ainsworth Hooten of Commerce; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and 16 brothers and sisters.
John Dennis Spring, 88
Funeral services for John Dennis Spring of Commerce will be held today at 2 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Rev. Bobby Tollison will officiate at the services arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park in Greenville. Pallbearers are Wayne Harms, Jeffrey Stewart, Daniel Ballenger, Johnny Moore, Marcus Moore and Johnny Palmer. Honorary pallbearers are Russel Hayes, Dan Good, Harrold Moore, Marcus Moore, Johnny Palmer and the members of the Senior Adult Men's Sunday School Class. Spring was born in Hugo, Okla., on June 6, 1911, the son of John Spring, Jr. and Ruth Cooper Spring. He married Mary Vernon Busby in Commerce on Nov. 8, 1934. Spring attended public school in Hugo, Okla., and moved to the Horton Community in 1922. He was a farmer and carpenter for many years and retired in 1974. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He served as deacon in the Baptist Church for 50 years in Ladonia and Commerce and also taught Sunday School Class in Ladonia. He was a member of the Grange Farmers Lodge, the Odd Fellows Lodge and the PCA in Hunt and Hopkins Counties. Survivors include his son, Paul Gene Spring of Tyler; daughters, Melba Laverne Hayes of Arlington and Neveda Lee Fluke of Whitney; brothers, J.M. Spring of Cooper and Jack Lynn Spring of Commerce; sisters, Susie Marie West of Commerce, Katherine Chilton of McKinney, Lois Faye Ingram and Margie Nell Williams of Quinlan; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1996 and two sisters, Mayrene Spring and Lorene Palmer. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
Veda Christine Raynes, 81
Funeral services were held yesterday for Veda Christine Raynes of Commerce. She died May 26 at Wilson Jones Hospital in Sherman. Services were arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home, with intermenty at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie, Texas. Raynes was born in Fulbright, Texas, on Nov. 25, 1918, the daughter of George and Ella Hornsby Douglas. She was married to George Rankin Raynes, now deceased. Raynes was a lifetime resident of Commerce and Fairlie Communities. She graduated from public schools and married George Rankin Raynes in 1940. She was Methodist by faith and was a member of the Home Demonstration Club in Fairlie. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, George Douglas Raynes and Judy Raynes of Sherman; daughter and son-in-law, Christie and Mark Armentrout of McKinney; four grandchildren, Doug and Jennifer Raynes and Alyssa and Nathan Armentrout. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on Aug. 30, 1999, four sisters and one brother. Mildred Rotenberry Herndon, 84
A memorial service will be held for Mildred Rotenberry Herndon of Commerce on Tuesday, May 30 at 3:30 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Ft. Worth, Texas. Herndon died in Greenville on May 24. Herndon was born on Aug. 19, 1915, the daughter of Elijah Rotenberry and Ruby Simms. She was a lifetime resident of Commerce. She was a bookkeeper and sales associate for Ward's Pharmacy for over 35 years. She retired in June 1998. Herndon was a member of the First Episcopal Church. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Enid and Arne Ahlstrom of Breckenridge, Colo.; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Susan Herndon of Seattle, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Norris Ruth Cherry of Royse City, Texas; granddaughter, Olivia Herndon of Seattle, Wash.; and nephew and wife, Rick and Gwen Boyer of Dardanelle, Ark. Herndon was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Enid Boyer; one brother, James Richard Rotenberry; one granddaughter, Allison Cherry and one grandson, Ben Cherry, Jr. The family will receive friends at the family residence following the memorial service.

Graveside services for Larry Gene Marks of Klondike were held yesterday at 3 p.m. at Rosemound Cemetery. David Gibson officiated at the services arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. He died May 26 at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. A carpenter by trade, Marks was born in Commerce on Feb. 19, 1943 to Lydia Louise Weatherbee. Survivors include his sister, Debra Ashley of Klondike; niece, Lytia Ashley of Klondike; and nephews, Jeremy and Johnny Ashley of Klondike.

Lloyd Briscoe, Sr., 78
Lloyd Chesley Briscoe, Sr., of Commerce, died Saturday, May 20, at his residence. Graveside services will be held Friday, May 26, at 10 a.m. at Chapelwood Memorial Gardens in Texarkana, Texas. Burial will be under the direction of Texarkana Funeral Home with Rev. John Montgomery officiating. Briscoe was born Oct. 19, 1921, in Enlow, Texas, and has lived in Commerce for the past 30 years. He was a retired chief of the Dallas Fire Department and a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy, and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Briscoe is survived by his first wife, Mary Briscoe of Dallas; sons, Lloyd Briscoe, Jr., of Commerce, and Keith Briscoe of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sisters, Leona Beeler of Dallas and Floy Thomasson of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Elaine Summers and Karen Enslow.
Coris Barto Johnson, 73
Funeral services for Coris Barto Johnson of Sulphur Springs were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Tapp Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Cecil B. McLeod officiating. Burial followed at the Mt. Sterling Cemetery with members of the Hopkins County Veterans Honor Guard serving as pallbearers. Johnson died Thursday, May 18 at the Oak Manor Nursing Home in Commerce. Johnson was born in Dike, Texas, on Jan. 15, 1927, the son of Reginald Mohun and Allie Hoover Johnson. He was a retired security guard officer and had served in the United States Army during World War II. He was of the Baptist faith. Johnson is survived by his nephew, Gary Causey of Dike; and four sisters, Ruby Causey of Dike, Zella Sanders and Joyce Johnson of Amarillo and Gay Jones of Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Noble, Claude, Alvie and Marlin Johnson; and three sisters, Murriel Hunt, Velma Holt and Blanche Johnson.
Gladys Auba Lemon, 93
Funeral services were held yesterday for Gladys Auba Lemon of Commerce after her death on May 21 at Riverview Care Center in Boerne, Texas. Rev. Roy Lee Dittmar officiated at the graveside service held at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Cumby, Texas. Lemon was born in Commerce on Sept. 13, 1906, the daughter of John and Susan Butler Branom. She married Philip Lemon in the Branom Community on Aug. 1, 1920. Lemon was a lifetime resident of Commerce. She attended public school in the Branom Community, which was named for her father, Joseph Branom. She moved to Boerne, Texas, to be near relatives. Lemon was a practical nurse for many years until receiving her LVN license in 1957. She retired in 1985. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church since June 1, 1945. Survivors include here daughters, Rose Knotts of San Marcus, Texas, and Ann Payne of Bergheim, Texas; sons, William Philip Lemon of Plano and Robert (Bob) Branom Lemon of Talihina, Okla.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Philip Lemon in 1984.

Services were held Thursday, May 18, at 11 a.m. for Mary B. Morgan of Newville, Pa. Morgan, a World War II Army Veteran, who was honored with full military graveside honors at Pecan Gap Cemetery in Pecan Gap, Texas. Rev. Odie Gene Cummings officiated. Brown, a retired nurse, was born Feb. 10, 1919 in Hulett, Ga. to Harry M. Eidson and Mattie M. Huckeba Eidson. She was married Feb. 4, 1946, in Linden, Texas to William A. (Pappy) Morgan. She died at Swaim Health Center in Newville, Pa., on May 13, 2000. She is preceded in death by her husband on April 22, 1980; her parents, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include her daughter, Kay Toth of Newville, Pa.; son, Robert H. Dobb of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Bernice E. Griffith of Ft. Worth, Texas; brother, Harry Alton Eidson of Temple, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Curtis D. Whitehead, 44
Curtis D. Whitehead of Green Cove Springs, Fla., formerly of Commerce, died May 9 at his home in Green Cove. Services were held yesterday in Florida. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18 in Muskogee, Okla., at Green Hill Cemetery. Whitehead was born to Lloyd Thed and Edna Avery Whitehead on Oct. 16, 1955, in Frederick, Okla. He attended junior high and high school in Commerce, where he graduated in 1975 with many friends and classmates at Commerce High School. Whitehead left Commerce in 1977 to pursue his career in contracting and married Gladys I. Wallace on May 10, 1976. They moved to Florida in 1985, where Whitehead has resided since. Sharing a family business of demolition and reconstruction with his two sons, Jack Edward and Christopher Lee. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Whitehead; sons, Jack Edward Whitehead and Christopher Lee Whitehead; daughter, Jurana Mae Alene Whitehead; mother, Edna Whitehead of Broken Bow, Okla.; brothers, Lloyd Douglas Whitehead and family, Timothy Jay Whitehead and family; sisters, Carolyn Hamilton and family of Muskogee, Okla., and Vickie Whitehead of Commerce; granddaughters, Kayla and Emilie Whitehead and their mother Julie, all of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Thed Whitehead of Muskogee, Okla., on Feb. 9, 1993. Whitehead was a good friend, father and brother who will be greatly missed.
Alvin Futch, 70
Funeral services were held yesterday for Alvin Futch of Campbell. Rev. Joel Harris officiated at the service in Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel in Commerce. Interment followed at Brigham Cemetery in Campbell. Pallbearers were Mark Futch, Luke McGill, Dean Futch, Lewis Ray Futch, Steve Wilson and Jim Hunton. Futch died Thursday, May 11, in Tyler, Texas. Futch was born in Sherman on Feb. 11, 1930 to Leonard and Kittie Faye Futch. He graduated from Bells High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from Southeastern State College in Durant, Okla., a Master's Degree in Criminal Science from East Texas State University in Commerce, a master's in Criminal Deviancy Behavior from American Technological University and his doctorate degree in Public Administration from Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Futch taught and coached at Bells High School. He joined the Department of Public Safety and worked in the driver's license division and later worked 12 years in the highway patrol as Safety Education Officer. He stood guard to Gov. John Connally, after the president assassination in 1963, and declined an appointment to the Secret Service during the Lyndon Baines Johnson Administration. He was director of the Police Academy at Lamar University in Beaumont. He moved to Killeen and at Central Texas College he directed five area police academies and the Military Police Division at Fort Hood. He was director of the Criminal Justice program at American Technological University. Futch also served as Dean of Financial Aid at Pueblo Community College in Colorado and balanced the school's books for three years, which had never been done. Futch was a Baptist by faith. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Imogene Futch of Campbell; son, March Futch of Dallas; brothers, Carl E. Futch of Brooks, Ga., Dean Futch of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Lewis Ray Futch of Dallas, N.C.; sisters, Teresa Pettit of Howe, Texas, Patricia Whitaker of Denton and Frances Jean Howell of Denton; grandson, Luke McGill and granddaughter, Katy Tatum. Futch was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Kathy McGill Tatum in 1992; and one sister, Margaret Evans. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Foundation.
Mamie Ruth Boucher, 85
Mamie Ruth Boucher passed away on May 10, 2000, at the Northwood Nursing Home in Marble Falls, Texas. Boucher was born on July 7, 1914, in Davilla, Texas, the daughter of Horace and Essie Marshall. Boucher is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Byron and Linda Boucher of Burnet, Texas; two brothers, Paul J. and wife, Mildred, Howard Marshall, and Kenneth T. and wife, Beatrice, Vaughn Marshall; numerous nieces and nephews. Brother-in-laws, Harvey Boucher, James Boucher and wife, Marjorie, Butch Boucher and wife, Marie; sister-in-law, Hazel Coker. Boucher was preceded in death by her parents, Horace Greely Marshall and Essie Elvira Ercanbrack; two brothers, Raymond W. Marshall and wife, Doris Clinton Marshall, and Lloyd "Hoover" Marshall, and one sister, Myrle Marshall Middlebrook and husband, Joe Middlebrook. Graveside services were held yesterday at Mt. Zion Cemetery in the community of Brannom near Commerce. The Rev. Roy L. Dittmar officiated at the service arranged by Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet, Texas.
George Buford Lyons, 83
George Buford Lyons, born March 8, 1917, died at his home on May 5, 2000. He is preceded in death by his wife, Vada Mae Steele Lyons.
Lyons was raised in Ennis and is a veteran of World War II. He was a resident of Garland for over 40 years before moving to Commerce for 15 years. He returned to live in Garland in 1998. He was a member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law , Shirley and Jim Belcher; son and daughter-in-law, George and Janelle Lyons; daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Phil Dial; nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 8, at Eastern Hills Baptist Church. Dr. David Hall officiated. Graveside services followed at Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis, Texas.
Funeral arrangements are by Eastgate Funeral Home in Garland.
