Laquita Joy Holmes of Stephenville passed away Oct. 31 at the home of her daughter in Cooper. Funeral services were held Nov. 3 at the Delta Funeral Home Chapel with Claude Sutton and Jerry Ransom officiating. Interment was in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper.
Holmes was born in Delta County, April 13, 1932, the daughter of Cecil and Ora Lee Johnson Bangs. She had lived in Stephenville for the past 12 years. On May 19, 1962, she married Jerry Holmes.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Holmes of Stephenville; three daughters, Jackie Nell Jones of Cooper, Janet Kay Funderburgh of Tyler and Jerri Lynn Holmes of Dallas; two brothers, Elvin Bangs of Burkburnett and Windell Bangs of Commerce; three sisters, Mozelle Thomas of Garland, Betty Fowler of Garland and Morene Billups of Skiatook, Okla.; four grandchildren, Daniel Jones of Commerce, Jason Jones of Ft. Hood, Jeff Jones of Ft. Steward, Ga., and Amy Parker of Elkhart; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon Rowe, Heather Parker and Hunter Parker. She was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.
Pallbearers for her service were Robert Burns, Leonard Montieth, Clyde Owen, E.J. Cates, Daniel Jones and Jason Jones. Honorary pallbearer was Jeff Jones.
Angie Evelyn Woodson, 78
Funeral services for Angie Evelyn Woodson of Commerce will be held today at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church. Rev. Rocky Pope will officiate at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at Mt. Sylvan Cemetery in Lindale, Texas. Pallbearers are Bryan Light, Richard Lee, Tim Caldwell, Bob Titus, Mike Woodson and Larry Woodson.
Woodson was born in Henderson, Texas, on Aug. 24, 1922, the daughter of M.F. and Inez Byrd Conley. On Oct. 10, 1942, she married Charles Edward Woodson III. She had lived in Commerce since 1957. She graduated from Gladewater High School in 1941. Woodson received her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from East Texas State University. She was a librarian for the Mesquite Independent School District. She was a member of the Texas Teachers and Retired Teachers' Association. She was active in the SPCA. Woodson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce.
Woodson is survived by son, Charles Edward Woodson IV of Frisco; daughter-in-law, Beverly Woodson of Frisco; daughter, Sharron Lee of Beeville; son-in-law, James Lee of Beeville; brother, Jack Conley of Lindale; brother, Ralph Conley of Greenville; sister, Beatrice Gullet of Lafayette, La.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Edward Woodson III on March 8, 1991; and two brothers, Major Conley and Hershel Conley.
Rosalie Porter
Rosalie Porter of Commerce died Saturday at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. yesterday at Jones Memorial Chapel with Rev. Charles Strickland officiating. Burial was in Rosemound Cemetery. Porter was born in Wood County, Texas, the daughter of Oscar and Carrie E. Conner Gilmore. She was married to Ernest Rush Monday in 1929. In 1965 she was married to Omer Porter and he preceded her in death in 1976. Porter was an operator with Gulf States Phone Company for 25 years, a dispatcher for Texas A&M University-Commerce for four years and also worked at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Porter was a member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church and Rebekah Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church of Commerce. She gave her profession of faith at age 28 during a revival at Horton Baptist Church. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Norma Monday of Commerce and James and Sandy Monday of Garland; daughter and son-in-law, Glynna Rose and Sonny Herbold of Garland, four grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters and two granddaughters. Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Luke E. Smith, 66
Funeral services for Luke E. Smith of Cumby were held at 2 p.m. yesterday in the Cumby United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Brummett and Hopkins County Judge Cletis Millsap officiating. Burial followed in the Cumby Cemetery with Howard Evans, Lion Higginbotham, James Smith, Gerald Smith, Larry Smith, Don Fallis, Larry Nelson and Joe Parish serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Cumby Volunteer Fire Department. Smith died at Lake Point Medical Center in Rowlette on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000. He was born on Dec. 30, 1933, in Cumby to John T. and Carrie Mae Tallant Smith. He married Dora Marie Potts on Jan. 31, 1958, in Ft. Worth. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Tina Brumley of Richardson; one son, Ronald Smith of Cumby; and one grandchild, Chas Brumley. Smith was a retired Quality Assurance Manager with Raytheon in Greenville. He was a member of the Cumby United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He served on the Cumby City Council, having been mayor for 10 years. He served on the Cumby Telephone Cooperative Board of Directors for 12 years. He helped establish the Cumby Fire Department in which he was lifetime charter member. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society. Cumby Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy J. Belitere, 50
Funeral services for Dorothy Belitere of Dallas were held Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000. Belitere passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at St. Paul's Hospital in Dallas after a lengthy illness. Rev. Ray Visor officiated at the service and intermenty followed at Elm Grove Cemetery in Van Zandt County. Belitere was born in Farmersville, Texas, on Oct. 12, 1950, the daughter of Virgil and Lorene Tadlock Lawless. She married Nicholas Belitere in 1967. She is survived by her husband, Nicholas Belitere of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas and Jennifer Belitere, Jr., of Mabank; daughter, Lori Belitere of Dallas; brother, Roy Lawless of Davis, Okla.; sisters, Shellia Hobbs of Cumby and Martha York of Denton; one granddaughter of Mabank; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Martha Muriel Highfield, 95
A graveside service was held Friday, Oct. 20, for Martha Muriel Highfield of Cooper. She died Oct. 18 at Birchwood Manor. Rev. Mike House officiated at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. The service and intermenty took place at Brashear Cemetery in Brashear. Her grandchildren served as pallbearers.
Highfield was a retired seamstress who worked for Leiter-Marlin Co. in Commerce. She was born Nov. 30, 1904, in Morgantown, Ky., the daughter of William Thomas and Emma Brown Kirby. On Dec. 8, 1923, she married Elmer Garland Highfield in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her son, Archie Highfield of Pickton; daughters, Odell Potter of Grand Saline, Odessa Nunn of Cooper and Montez Prince of Cooper; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter and one grandson.
Eual Martin, 88
Funeral services for Eual Martin of Mineral Wells are scheduled for today at 1 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. A former resident of Delta County, Martin died Oct. 20 in Mineral Wells. Rev. David Best and Rev. George Glover will officiate. Interment follows at Shiloh Cemetery in Klondike. Pallbearers are George M. Humphries, Carlton Ray Martin, Ronnie Martin, Gaston Dodd, J.C. Moore and Billy Walker.
Martin was born in Klondike, Texas, on Aug. 21, 1912, the son of George and Lucinda Pratt Martin. He lived in Delta County and graduated from Shiloh Community School. On Dec. 2, 1948, he married Winona Walker. Martin later lived in Ft. Worth and then moved to Mineral Wells. He served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant in the 162nd Infantry during World War II. He was an industrial welder for Can-Tex for 17 years, until his retirement in 1976. He was a farmer. He was a member of West Side Baptist Church in Mineral Wells, where he was a Deacon and past Sunday School Superintendent.
Survivors include his wife, Winona Walker Martin of Mineral Wells; sons, Russell Dean Martin and Kenneth Ray Martin, both of Mineral Wells; daughter-in-law, Val Martin of Mineral Wells; granddaughters, Michel Martin and Megan Martin, both of Mineral Wells; sisters, Mozelle Ray of Klondike and Bessie Humphries of Petty, Texas; brother, Fred Martin of Honey Grove.
Ida Faye Lawson, 74
Funeral services for Ida Faye Lawson of Cumby are today at 2 p.m. at Tapp Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs. Rev. Roy Lee Dittmar and Rev. Bob Woodard will officiate. Burial will follow in Tira Cemetery with Eddie Gray, Richard Bearden, Billy Jo Clayton, Troy Smith and Mike Finley serving as pallbearers. Lawson died Oct. 20 in Greenville.
Lawson was born on June 10, 1926, in Franklin County, the daughter of James Henry and Seelena Chapman Melton. She married A.C. Lawson on Dec. 5, 1945, in Longview, Texas. She retired from Warren-Lamber Laboratory, where she worked as a Medical Lab Technician. She was a member of the Tira Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, A.C. Lawson of Cumby; son, Mark Lawson of Irving; daughter, Delores Holland of Mississippi; brother, James Calvin Melton of Tira; two sisters, Melba Lou Lawson of Tira and Mamie Jo Hedrick of Carrollton; a grandson, Brian Braham; and a great-grandson, Samuel Braham.
William "Bill" Haynes, Jr., 74
Funeral services for William "Bill" Sandord Haynes, Jr., of Wolfe City are tomorrow, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. at Owens Funeral Chapel in Wolfe City. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. tonight at Owens Funeral Home. Henry Edgington and Bob Money will officiate at the service. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City. Pallbearers are Larry Reynolds, Ken Foust, James Farris, Charles Gardner, Jack Butler, Johnny Rozell, W.D. Maples and Bill Olafsen. Honorary pallbearers are Tommy Deary, Reuben Milton, Pat Painter, Mike Doyle and Donnie Isbell.
Haynes was born in Mart, Texas, on Jan. 23, 1926, to William S. and Iva Pearl Dodson Haynes. On Feb. 6, 1948, he married Joan Collman in Dallas. Haynes was an accountant, a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of West Main Church of Christ in Wolfe City and owner of Haynes Bookkeeping & Tax Service.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Haynes of Wolfe City; son and daughter-in-law, Warren and Nicki Haynes of Round Rock, Texas; grandchildren, Doyle Haynes of Jacksonville, Fla., Jessica Haynes of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Cory Haynes of Seward, Neb.; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Devin Haynes of Jacksonville, Fla.
Dorothy Louise Moxley Laws, 79
Dorothy Louise Moxley Laws, beloved wife of Ben A. Laws, mother of Ben A. Laws, Jr., David M. Laws and Daniel Laws, died peacefully at Aspen Meadows at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2000.
Born in Klondike, Texas, on Aug. 1, 1921, Dorothy, known as "Dot" to family and friends, was the daughter of Jess and Ocie Moxley. As her father was a school teacher, principal and superintendent, Dot was expected to excel academically, and did so, being moved forward three grades and graduating from Windom (Texas) High School at age 16 in 1937, where she earned the honor of valedictorian. She attended East Texas State Teachers College, in Commerce, and graduated with Bachelor's Degree in Art and teaching certificate, in 1941. She began teaching art at age 19 at the high school in Tyler, Texas.
In 1942, she took a teaching position in Paris, Texas, because in her words, "That's where the boys were." She met her husband-to-be, Ben, a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army, in the spring of 1944. They soon became engaged and were joined in marriage on Sept. 16, 1944, in Little Rock, Ark.
Ben shipped out to New Guinea shortly after the wedding, and Dorothy's prayers and daily letters sustained him through his trials in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Their first child, Ben Jr., was born in 1945 in Texas, and after Ben Sr.'s return from service, the three moved to Billings, Mont., where Ben Sr. began working at H-C-L Equipment. Their second son, David, was born in 1948, and in 1952, the family lost a third son, Daniel, in pregnancy.
Dorothy was very active all of her live at the Billings Church of Christ, teaching, counseling, training others, conducting home visitations, and many other functions. She was an extremely talented artist, and enjoyed many activities related to arts and crafts, including oil painting, fine art ceramics and home decoration. Her love of family and friends was constant and unwavering through war and tragedy, as well as the joys of daily life. She brought hope and laughter to all those who were fortunate enough to know her. She enjoyed attending church, singing, playing piano, and all aspects of art and music. Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Jess Moxley, her mother, Ocie Miller Moxley, and her brother, William Perry (Buddy) Moxley. She is survived by her loving husband, two sons and their wives, two granddaughters and a grandson, and many friends.
Cremation took place and memorial services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Church of Christ in Billings, Mont. Memorials may be sent to Alzheimer Association of Greater Billings.
Charles H. Wright, 88
Charles H. Wright of Canton, and former resident of Cooper and Commerce, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Medical Center Hospital in Terrell, Texas.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Delta Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Strickland officiating and intermenty following in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper.
Wright was born in Delta County, Jan. 6, 1912. He was the son of Charles Dancy and Sallie Hogue Wright. He had lived in Delta County all his life and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Dec. 22, 1934, he married Eileen Giltner and she preceded him in death, Oct. 21, 1983. In 1986, he married Marie Bradford.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Wright of Canton; son, David Wright of Lewisville; daughter, Sallie White of Pinehurst, N.C.; step-son, Charles Bradford of Bremerton, Wash.; step-daughters, Patricia Autrey of Rockwall, Deborah Skaggs of Grand Prairie and Sandra Briley of Wills Point; five grandchildren, Michael White, John White, Charles Bradford, Lacey Briley and Christi Skaggs of the Wright home.
Pallbearers were Cade Alley, John Autrey, Richard Briley, Landis Mobley, Bill Robertson, Charles Robertson and Tommy Wilson.
Alan Land, 70
Funeral services for Alan Land of Casper, Wyoming, formerly of Cumby, will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16 in the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Cumby with the Rev. Pete Akin officiating. Interment will follow in the Friendship Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Fred Land, Jerry Arnold, Jacob Arnold, and Jarrod Hansford.
Land was retired from Hicks Equipment; he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was a member of the family of Jesus and attended the Sunrise Baptist Church in Casper, Wyoming.
He passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Casper. He was born on Nov. 15, 1929 in Sweetwater, Texas to James B. and Myrtle Woods Land. He married Wanda Glee Turner on Dec. 31, 1949 in Commerce, Texas.
Land is survived by his wife. Other survivors include two daughters Myrna Arnold of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Judy White of McKinney, Texas; one son Fred Land of Cumby; two sisters Thelma Harris of Roundup, Mont., and Margie Tomko of Shelbytownship, Mich.; two brothers Mitchell Land of Dixon, Mo., and Lewis Land of Linton, Ind.; grandchildren Joshua Hansford, Jarrod Hansford, Jacob Arnold, Amber White, Misty White, Audry White, and Collin Land; and two great children.
Preceding Land in death are two brothers Bruce and Milton Land and one sister Dorothy Plessinger.
