Services were held Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 at 10 a.m. for Roy D. (Bub) Kinser at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. He died Tuesday, Sept. 19 in Commerce. Rev. Wesley McCasland, Rev. Bill Mills and Rev. Richard Diggs officiated. Interment was at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie.
Kinser was born in Plainview, Arkansas on Feb. 14, 1918 to John and Emma Kinser. He married Marie Wilkins on Oct. 1, 1938 in Commerce.
Kinser was a longtime resident of Commerce and was employed by the Commerce Independent School District for 38 years. He retired in 1980.
He was a member of the Riley Grove Congregational Methodist Church for 61 years and served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and song director. He actively pursued his love for gospel music by forming a family music group, traveling and making several recordings.
He was receded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and one great-granddaughter Lauren Marie Crowell.
Survivors include his wife Marie Kinser of Commerce; daughter Wanda Crowell of Commerce; son-in-law Mike Crowell of Commerce; sister Mildred Little of Fort Worth; sister Audra Mae Horton of Fort Worth; two granddaughters Donna Newkirk of Plano and Rhonda Lloyd of Plano; one grandson Grant Crowell of Commerce; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Carr Newkirk, Grant Crowell, Kevin Lloyd, Gary Wilkins, David Stinson and Bill Kennedy.
Memorials may be made to the Riley Grove church building fund or to the research for Parkinson's disease.
R.D. "Bud" Kinser
Services planned for R.D. Kinser, a longtime resident of Commerce died Tuesday, Sept. 19 at his home. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 at Pemberton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel.
Irene Gibson, 92
Funeral services for Irene Gibson of Flint, Texas, were held yesterday at Lloyd James Funeral Home Chapel in Tyler, Texas. Mike Warner officiated, with intermenty at 1 p.m. in Prairie Valley Cemetery in Hunt County near Commerce. Pallbearers were Russell Presley, Bill Shanklin, Roy Fraley, Lee Tindell, Tommy Parrish and Ron Shultz.
Gibson was born Oct. 21, 1907, in Anson, Texas. She had lived in Commerce for 70 years before moving to Flint five years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Commerce.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Lon Benton and Loriece Gibson of Flint; grandchildren, David Mark Gibson, Victor Lee Gibson, Roger and Kay Bellar, Mike and Debra Tutt and Todd and Karen Tutt. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Lon Gibson.
Billie Jo Brock, 73
Funeral services for Billie Jo Brock of Commerce were held yesterday at Boze-Mitchell Chapel in Waxahachie, Texas. Rev. Grady Cashion officiated at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Interment will take place Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. at La Vista Memorial Park in National City, Calif.
Brock was born in Waxahachie on Oct. 31, 1926, the daughter of Fred and Allie Collier Willig. She married Gerald Brock in San Diego, Calif., on Oct. 26, 1944. She had lived in Hunt County since 1987, having moved from San Diego. She was homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald Brock of Commerce; sons, Billy Ray Brock of Yuma, Ariz., and Lee Roy Brock of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Carolyn Jean Brock of Spring Valley, Calif.; brother, Bobby of Lake Palestine; two sisters, Margie and Cynthia of Waxahachie; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sister, Juanita, Maruine, Ena and Jean; and two brothers, Fredrick and Kenneth.
Kenneth "Kenny" Lawrence Foretich, 49
Family and friends remembered Kenneth "Kenny" Lawrence Foretich of Commerce yesterday at funeral services held at Word of Life Church. Rev. Rick Flynn and Rev. Craig LaBarbera officiated at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Interment followed at Rosemound Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gary Elliott, Kevin Pickel, Devin Shaw, James Walker, Larry White and Wesley Adams. Honorary pallbearer was Johnny Flanagan.
Foretich was born in Ft. Worth on Feb. 24, 1951, the son of Larry and Gloria Seidule Foretich. He married Connie Joan Shipp on Dec. 31, 1990, in Sulphur Springs. Foretich had lived in Commerce since 1969, having moved from Euless. He was a graduate of L.D. Bell High School in 1969. While in high school, he was a football quarterback, basketball guard, baseball pitcher and a runner in track. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Education from East Texas State University. He owned and operated the Kettle Restaurant in Greenville. He also taught and coached football and other sports in Royce City, Campbell, Cooper and Honey Grove. He presently was employed at Windham School District in Bonham and taught GED classes at the Cole Buster State Jail in Bonham. He was a member of two bicycle clubs. He was also a member of Texas Retirement System and former member of Texas State Teachers Association. He owned and operated Chain Reaction Bicycle Shop in Commerce until June of 2000. He was member of the Word of Life Church in Commerce where Memorials may be made.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Foretich of Commerce; stepson, Devin Thomas Shaw of Commerce; stepdaughters, Heather Lauren Shaw and Colleen Rene' Shaw of Garland; father, Larry Foretich of Cleburne; mother, Gloria Foretich of Cleburne; sisters, Susan Foretich of Las Cruces, N.M., and Kelly Adams of Ladonia; two nephews and two nieces; and his Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
Georgia Ruth Ponder, 90
Funeral services for Georgia Ruth Ponder of Fountain Inn, S.C., were held yesterday at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Rev. Mike House officiated, with intermenty following at Rosemound Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bob Ponder, P.J. Ponder, J.D. Ponder, Bob Easter, Jerry Easter and Milton Long.
Ponder, a former resident of Commerce, was born to George Champion and Lizzie James Riddle Easter on Nov. 7, 1909, in Chico, Texas. She married Robert Ponder in Cooper on March 1, 1931. She attended Yowell Public Schools and she was a member of Yowell Methodist Church. She was a homemaker. She moved to Greenville, S.C., to be near relatives.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Jolene and William W. Sissell of Greenville, S.C.; several nieces and nephews; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Ponder; one son, Robert Champion Ponder; three sisters and one brother.
Lester "Bill" Monroe Stone, Jr., 76
Funeral services for Lester "Bill" Monroe Stone, Jr., of Commerce will be held today at 11 a.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Rev. Mike House will officiate at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home, with intermenty to follow at Rosemound Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Steve Shwiff, Steve Avard, Chip Harper, Don Grisham, Ed Sunderland and Dale Funderburk. Honorary pallbearers are F.H. (Bub) McDowell, Robert Clark and James Taggart.
Stone was born in Tampico, Mexico, the son of Lester Monroe and Leafy Lee Clifton Stone. He was a longtime resident of Commerce. He graduated from East Texas Training School in 1940. He then attended East Texas State Teachers College and the United States Marine V-12 School in Rustin, La. Stone graduated from officer's school and received his MBA from Tulane University in New Orleans, La. A veteran of the U.S. Marines, Stone served in the Korean War and received a Purple Heart. He was a Military Aide at the White House during the Eisenhower Administration and the Ford Foundation. He was a Military Aide and escort to King Hussein of Jordan. From 1967 until his retirement in 1999, Stone was a professor of economics at Texas A&M University-Commerce. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Mary Sue Stone of Houston; nephews, Robert C. Stone, Jr., of New Orleans, La., Michael B. Stone of Scottsdale, Ariz., and David M. Stone of Portland, Ore.; niece, Susan Costello of Houston; and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Clifton Stone.
James H. Barker, 85
James H. Barker, Master Sgt. U.S.A.F. retired, died Sunday, Aug. 20. A longtime resident of Almagordo, N.M., Barker was born in Wolfe City on July 29, 1915. Committal services followed the funeral in Monte Vista Cemetery, with Sacramento Lodge No. 24, A.F. & A.M. officiating. Military honors were provided by the Holloman AFB Honor Guard.
Barker grew up in the Fairlie Community and members of his family, friends and acquaintances continue to live there. He left home in Fairlie to join the army in San Antonio and spent several years at Kelly Air Base. He was stationed at Warner Robbins Air Base in Georgia when he met his wife, Jane. They were married in Macon, Ga. Barker served in the U.S. Air Force in Brazil, Paraguay, Holland, California and Barksdale Air Base in Louisiana before going to Almagordo, N.M. where he lived the rest of his life.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jane Barker of the family home; two daughters, Judith Anne Pannell and her husband, Richard, of Lakeside, Ariz., and Lilas Barker Davis and her husband, Mike, of Breckenridge, Texas; four grandchildren, Taryn Foster of Lincoln, Neb., and Janie, Haley and Emma Davis of Breckenridge; four brothers, Hollis Barker of Longview, Roy Dale Barker and his wife, Shirley, of Fairlie, Morris Barker and his wife, Nelda, of Fairlie and Allen Barker and his wife, Noree, of Sulphur Springs; and three sisters, Uralee Farell of Fairlie, Lucille Lloyd and her husband, Ernie of Garland, and Maurine Stepter and her husband, Norman, of Dallas.

Paul Elmore, 78
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 28, for Paul Elmore of Commerce at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Cumby. Elmore died Aug. 26 at Sunridge Post Oak Nursing Home in Sherman.
Born on May 29, 1922, to A. Beecher and Cleo Wood Elmore, he was a longtime resident of Commerce. Elmore was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and served on the Tank Battalion. He was a heavy equipment operator for Hunt County Precinct #4.
Survivors include sisters-in-law, Mrs. James Elmore of Sulphur Springs, Mrs. Bill Elmore of Campbell, Mrs. Vesta Elmore of Desoto and Claudia Elmore of Campbell; as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother; three half-brothers; two half-sisters; one infant daughter and two brothers, Bill and James Elmore.
Betty Jo Price, 72
Funeral services for Betty Jo Price of Cumby were held yesterday, Aug. 19, at Jones Memorial Chapel. Rev. Wes Dean officiated and intermenty followed at Long Cemetery in Cumby. Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Curtis Neyland, Jr., Andy Price, Gary Sanvig, Robby Lynn Plunkett, William (Hugh) Garrett and Mark Pence. Honorary pallbearers were J.T. Blount, Richard Plunkett, Bobby Callan, Bill Rathmell, John Rathmell, Glenn Miller and David Earls.
Price was born in Novice, Texas, on March 5, 1928, the daughter of Barney and Gertie Mae Rathmell. On Aug. 8, 1950, she married James Preston (Jim) Price in Coleman, Texas. She was the owner of Price Hardwood, Lumber & Steel in Cumby. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cumby.
Survivors include daughters, Dianne Oceana of Ashland, Ore., Sally Price Sanvig of Sulphur Springs, Cindy Price of Cumby; grandson, Cabo Price Sanvig of Sulphur Springs; brothers, John Rathmell of Austin and Bill Rathwell of San Antonio; sisters, Bennie Gay of Coleman and Lily Poweski of San Antonio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Price, on March 24, 1995, her parents, two brothers and one sister.
Paul Elmore, 78
Paul Elmore of Commerce died yesterday, Aug. 26, at Sunbridge Post Oak Nursing Care in Sherman. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Pemberton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Patricia Anne Hill, 50
A homecoming celebration was held at Griffith Chapel C.M.E. on Saturday, Aug. 19 for Patricia Anne Hill. She passed away on Aug. 16. Bishop Harold Pannell officiated at the service arranged by Cozine & Tarver Funeral Home in Greenville. Interment followed at Lebonon Cemetery in Commerce.
Pallbearers were Anthony Henry, Kenneth Henry, Daryl Martin, Richard Relford, Lamont Martin and Gary Martin. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Rogers, Odell Lewis Henry Relford, George Henry Jr., Charles A. Neal, Charlie Smith and Timothy Sweet. Flowerbearers were the Class of 1968.
Hill was born on March 24, 1950, the daughter of Richard Hill and Maudie Marie Martin. She attended Norris High School, Commerce High School, Watterson College of Nursing, South Bay Business College, studied Property Management and was a Word Processing Specialist. She was a member of Griffith Chapel C.M.E. Church. She had been married to Timothy Howard Sweet and Henry Joe Relford.
Survivors include two daughters, Twana Sweet and Navy Corpsman Tanarcia Belford, both of Camp Lejuene, N.C.; daughter/niece, Demitra Rogers (Terry); sister, Melinda Relford (Bobby); aunt, Eva Stiggers (Douglas); uncles, James Martin (Barbara) and Willie Ed Martin (Emma Jean); grandson, Daryian Hubbard; special Aunt Marie Martin. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and stepfather, her grandparents and two uncles. Survivors also include god children, Brekenna Champion, Kenneth Henry, LaShaunda Matlock and Lena Reed; special friend, Ray Hill of Pontiac Michigan; a host of other relatives and friends.

Words cannot express the comfort you have given us in out time of b bereavement. Just knowing that your prayers, thoughts, and yes, your presence, were with us on this day has made our loss a little less painful. Charles Strickland, 83
Funeral service for Charles Strickland of Sulphur Springs were held Thursday, Aug. 24, in First Christian Church, Sulphur Springs, with Dr. Jim B. Elam and Rev. Tom Frisbie officiating. Interment followed at Sulphur Springs City Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Charles Spencer Hodge, Christopher Wayne Gee, Kyle Strickland Burney, Zachary Bryan Burney, Stephen A. Morella and Korey W. Baley. West Oaks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Honorary pallbearers were the Elders and Deacons of First Christian Church.
Strickland died at his residence Aug. 22 following an extended illness. He was born in Grandbury, Texas, May 1, 1917, the son of James C. And Freida Yowell Strickland. The Strickland family moved to Commerce when he was very young. He was a graduate of Commerce High School and East Texas State University. He married Jean Spencer in Sulphur Springs on July 21, 1940. Strickland was a well-known Sulphur Springs businessman, churchman and civic leader. He was former owner of A-1 Auto Supply. He was also a former co-owner of Sulphur Springs Parts Company.
Strickland was a former mayor of Sulphur Springs and was active in many civic organizations including the Rotary Club, the Sulphur Springs Independent School Board, the board of the Sulphur Springs Country Club, was a director of both the Automobile Wholesalers of America and the American Hereford Association.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Strickland of Sulphur Springs; four daughters, Marilyn Bromby of Olathe, Kan., Linda Payne of Houston, Carol Gee and husband, Tim, of Sulphur Springs and Sharon Burney and her husband, Bryan, of Sulphur Springs; nine grandchildren, Susan Hodge Baley, Charles Spencer Hodge, Laura Kathryn Morello, Anne Elizabeth Hampton, Sarah Elizabeth Gee, Christopher Wayne Gee, Kyle Strickland Burney, Zachary Bryan Burney and Alexander Case Burney; and nine great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Strickland in 1999.
