Opal Williams, 97

Graveside services were held yesterday at Little Elm Cemetery for Opal Williams of Sulphur Springs, formerly of Commerce. Rev. Natalie Chamberlain officiated at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Williams was born in Frisco on Oct. 16, 1903, the daughter of J.T. and Cassandra (Cassie) White Williams. She died Dec. 4 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs. Williams graduated from Frisco Public Schools on June 3, 1921. She then received a bachelor of arts degree from Texas College of Industrial Arts (now Texas Woman's University) in 1928, a bachelor's degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1931 and a master's degree in Library Science in 1948 from the Columbia University School of Library Science. Williams spent many years in library service, beginning at Randolph College in Cisco, Texas, from 1925 to 1928. She came to East Texas State Teacher's College in 1928 and was named Head Librarian in 1931. During her tenure, the Department of Library Science was organized. After 45 years in library service, Williams stepped down as Head Librarian in 1969 and retired in 1973. She was the first East Texas State University librarian to be granted emeritus rank. A longtime member of the First Christian Church of Commerce, she served in many areas. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, a charter member of Friends of Commerce Public Library (1954) and served as Executive Vice President until 1979. Williams was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Beta Lambda Chapter, East Texas State University Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution, Captain Charles Croxall Chapter of Commerce, in which she served as regent from 1974-1978. Williams had a life membership in the Texas Library Association in which she was active on the local, district and state levels. She traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. Survivors include her brother, Dr. J.T. Williams of Sulphur Springs; nephew, Tim Williams and wife, Sherry, of Sulphur Springs; and niece, Mickey Richey of Tyler. She is preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Jimmie Ramage.

Curtis Eugene Cadle, 63
Curtis Eugene Cadle, of Commerce, passed away Nov. 30, 2000 in Commerce. He was a self-employed electrician. Born to Otis Lee Cadle and Dolly Arleen Newman Cadle on July 28, 1937 in Hephzibah, Ga., Cadle was married to Donna Mills. He was also a Navy veteran. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Mills, of Commerce; sons Calvin E. Cadle and William Bennett Cadle, both of Florida, and Billy Ray Cadle of Commerce; daughters Patricia Cadle-Wettingfeld and Kathleen Cadle, both of Florida, and Sarah Elizabeth Cadle of Commerce; and seven grandchildren.

Carmel R. Saenz, 65
Carmel R. Saenz of Greenville died Thursday morning at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville from complications of Parkinson's Disease. A funeral mass was held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2, at St. Williams Catholic Church. Burial was in Memoryland Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary was held Friday at 7 p.m. at St. Williams.
Born July 16, 1935 in Celeste, she was the daughter of Marcelina Rodriguez and the late Jesse Rodriguez. She was a graduate of Celeste High School and East Texas State Teachers College, now Texas A&M University-Commerce. Saenz taught school or many years in the San Isdro Independent School District, later she and her family returned to Greenville where she was employed by Rubbermaid, Inc. for over 16 years, until her medical retirement, due to Parkinson's Disease.
Saenz was a long standing member of St. Williams Catholic Church and a member of the Hunt County Professional Women's Club where she was chosen woman of the year for 1987-88 and 1997-98. She also served on the Greenville Electric Utility Systems Board of Trustees in 1996. Saenz, along with her sister Teresa started a Parkinson's Support Group in Greenville, in 1998.
Survivors include her children, Steven M. Saenz and wife Kimberly; John M. Saenz and wife Kristi, of Greenville, and Cindy A. Lucero and husband Cesar of Pflugerville. Also surviving her are her mother, Marcelina Rodriguez; sisters Teresa and Mickie Rodriguez and brother, Modesto Rodriguez all of Greenville; brothers Joe Rodriguez of Ft. Worth, and Jesse Rodriguez, Jr. of McKinney; sisters Mary Pacheco of San Antonio and Tommie Moon of Bedford; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to American Parkinson's Disease Association.

Aline Lytal Robertson, 76
Aline Lytal Robertson of Abilene, departed her beloved Texas to be with her Lord and Savior on Nov. 30, 2000. She was born March 22, 1914 in Wolfe City, in Hunt County. Most of her adult life she resided in Dallas.
She was a devoted member of Owenwood Methodist Church. Following an illness she and her husband of 50 plus years moved to Wisteria Place in Abilene to be near their son. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Dale Robertson. She is survived by one son, Jimmie Lytal Robertson and wife, Josephine of Albany, Texas; one granddaughter, Stephani Rhea Seewald and husband Jeffery; two great grandchildren, Austin Elizabeth Seewald and Andrew Tyler Seewald of Davidson, North Carolina.
The family charity is The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, P. O. Box 199300, Dallas, Texas 75219-9300.
Graveside services were held at Restland Cemetery of Dallas, on Dec. 2, at 4 p.m.

Willie I. Box, 96

Funeral services for Willie I. Box of Commerce are today at 11 a.m. at Jones Memorial Chapel. Rev. Jimmy Rose will officiate at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers, Ben Housewright, Dwight Housewright, Tony Scott, Johnny Nabers, Rick Brewer, Gene Bagby, Glen Andersen and Justin Nabers. Box was born in McMinnville, Tenn., on June 30, 1904, the daughter of James Douglas and Fannie Etta Payne Cope. She married Benjamin Harvey Moore on Dec. 2, 1922, in Rockwall. He preceded her in death in April of 1980. On Feb. 14, 1987, she married Doyle E. Box in Commerce. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1999. Box was a retired nurse who had worked at Wintermute Hospital in Klondike, Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce and Oak Manor Nursing Home. She also worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney's during the 1940s and worked at White's Dry Goods. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Commerce. Survivors include her son, Bob R. Moore of Commerce; daughters, Jean Housewright of Quitman, Jimmie N. Johnson of Quitman and Patricia Ann Brewer of Pittsburg, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husbands as mentioned and a grandson, Terry Ray Moore on Nov. 4, 1990.

Charlie Dodson, 52

Funeral services for Charlie Dodson, of Cumby, will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, at the First Baptist Church of Cumby with the Rev. Harvey Snyder officiating. Burial will follow in the Long Cemetery with Scott Lawson, David Lawson, John Lawson, Michael Maddox, Morgan Maddox, and James Keadle serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be today, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Cumby Funeral Home. Dodson died Friday, Nov. 24, at the V.A. Hospital in Dallas, after a sudden illness. He was born March 6, 1948 in Sulphur Springs, to Charles Edward and Betty Jean Marlar Dodson. He married Bonnie Jane Isbell on March 6, 1968 in Columbus, Ga. She survives. Dodson had worked as a police officer for the South Lake Police Dept., was formerly chief of police in Cumby, and was a constable for precinct 2. Dodson served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War, and was a member of the Cumby Masonic Lodge #180. Survivors include his mother, Betty Marlar of Cumby; two daughters; Shandra Renee Dodson, and Christi Davidson both of Cumby; three sisters, Gail Schumaker of Coolidge, Ariz., Debra Hinkle of Rhome, Texas, and Cathy Small of Hallsville, Texas; four brothers, John Lawson of Cumby, Scott Lawson of Commerce; David Lawson of Barstow, Calif., and Gary Dodson of Auburn, Washington. Grandchildren, Jeffrey Shane, and Iliana Bara Davidson. He was preceded in death by his father in 1981. Cumby Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Reinhold Roosevelt Close, 93

Graveside services for Reinhold Roosevelt Close will be today, Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce. Visitation will be from 12 noon until time of the service. Close died Thursday, Nov. 23 at Presbyterian Hospital in Commerce. Close was born March 20, 1907 in Mason County, Ill., to Edward Close and Ruth McKee Close. He married Edith Sharp Close on Oct. 10, 1932 in Peoria, Ill. He lived in Commerce many years before moving to Ladonia in 1999. He was retired from the maintenance department at Flour Bluff School in Corpus Christi. Survivors include sons, Alvin Close of Oyster Creek, Texas; Kenneth Close of Wolfe City, Texas; Larry Close of Ladonia; daughters Betty Schoolcraft and Ruby Close, both of Ladonia; sister Annabelle close of Washington, Ill.; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; 3 great-greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Close was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Close, on April 22, 1995; a son, granddaughter, great-granddaughter; 3 brothers and 5 sisters. Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Maggie Rebecca Prince, 87

Funeral services for Maggie Rebecca Prince of Commerce will be held today at 11 a.m. in Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Rev. David Gibson will officiate with intermenty to follow at Wieland Cemetery in Wieland, Texas. Pallbearers will be Stacy Pruitt, Jarred Ferguson, Jody Todhunter, Gary Prince, Ronnie Old and Jason Lawler. Honorary pallbearer is Jerry Lawler. Pemberton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Prince had lived in Commerce most of her life and was a homemaker. She was born in Jefferson County, Fla., the daughter of William and Vida Addella White Henry on Jan. 8, 1913. She married Charlie Peterson Prince in Durant, Okla., on Dec. 19, 1933. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include her sons, Raymond Prince of Box Springs, Texas, Calvin Prince of Sulphur Springs, Earl Prince of Paris and Harold Prince of Commerce; daughters, Betty Fouse of Commerce and Nita Shavers of Mesquite; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charlie Peterson Prince on June 25, 1980; one son, Alvin Ottie Prince on Dec. 19, 1938; on granddaughter, Sue Ann Prince on Sept. 30, 1979; one grandson, Calvin Dewayne Prince on July 1984; three brothers and one sister.

Margaret H. Cooper, 74

Funeral services for Margaret H. Cooper of Sulphur Springs were held Friday, Nov. 17 at the Tapp Funeral Home with Bro. Al Davis officiating. Burial followed at the Gafford Chapel Cemetery with David Bone, Rodney Mize, Jackie Mize, Leslie Mize, Danny Keller, Jr., Darren March, Randy Watkins and Stephen Clayton serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Tim McClelland, Rojelio Camacho, Carroll Maricle, John Spencer, Danny Keller, Sr., and Charlie March. Cooper died Nov. 14 at the Sulphur Springs Nursing Home. She was born on April 8, 1926, in Sulphur Springs, the daughter of Otto and Pearl Jones Perry. She married Raymond D. Cooper on Nov. 5, 1941, in Hunt County. Cooper was a food service worker with ARA Services at East Texas State University for 15 years. She was also a caregiver and a member of the First Assembly of God in Commerce. She is survived by her husband, Raymond D. Cooper of Sulphur Springs; son, Raymond Dean Cooper of Commerce; six daughters, Doris McClelland of Albany, Ga., Joyce Keller of Sulphur Springs, Carol Maricle of Sulphur Springs, Pamela March of Frostproof, Fla., Ramajean Camacho of Greenville and Michelle Bone of Commerce; brother, Nub Perry of Turlock, Calif.; sister, Martha Congley of Golddonna, La.; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and sever nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Evelyn Spencer on Nov. 18, 1977, and two sisters.

Emmett Olton Funderburk, 82

Emmett Olton Funderburk of Denton died Nov. 15 at his home. He was a former resident of Commerce. He was born in Yantis on Aug. 9, 1918, to Douglas C. and Bannie Burney Funderburk. He was married to Frances Evelyn Clark in Commerce on Oct. 16, 1937. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Funderburk retired from Texas Instruments where he worked in the Machine Shop. Funeral service were Friday, Nov. 17 at the Cindy Nichols Chapel of the First Baptist Church with Rev. Cliff Feeler and Dr. Jeff Williams officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Vista Care Hospice, 625 Dallas Drive, Suite 350, Denton, Texas 76205. Funderburk is survived by his wife, Frances Funderburk of Denton; sons, Olton Mark Funderburk of Arlington and Nathan Glenn Funderburk of Aubrey; one brother, Travis Funderburk of Dallas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Waldron Funderburk. Arrangements were under the direction of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home.

James Cecil Hanes, 90

Funeral services for James Cecil Hanes of Commerce are today at 2 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Rev. David Gibson will officiate with intermenty following at Rosemound Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Anderson, Mike Anderson, Randy Clark, Bill Webb, Willie Tucker and Waylon Dearing. Hanes was born on Oct. 8, 1910, in the Jordan Community, the son of Lewis and Kinny Simms Hanes. On Nov. 18, 1933, he married Frances Terry in Greenville. Hanes was a long-time resident of Commerce. He graduated from Ladonia High School. He attended Tyler Business School. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Texas State University. He taught and coached for Dalhart Independent School District. He was a principal for the Valley View Independent School District in Valley View, Texas. He was also a farmer and a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his son, Terry C. Hanes of Mandeville, La.; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Hanes of Mandeville, La.; grandchildren, Terry Hanes, Jr., Francie Hanes, Robert Dillard and Lori Hanes; great-grandchildren, Abby and Cody Dillard. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances Terry Hanes on Sept. 4, 1992; three sisters and one brother.

Melvin Gene Nunn, Jr., 69

Graveside services were held for Melvin Gene Nunn of Cooper on Friday, Nov. 17, at Brashear Cemetery. Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Nunn was born in Donna, Texas, on Jan. 22, 1931, the son of Melvin G. and Ruby Aline Sims Nunn. On May 8, 1949, he married Odessa E. Highfield in Colorado City, Texas. Nunn operated cafeterias in the Dallas area for 30 years until he retired in 1982. He was baptized in the Catholic faith while he was in West Park Nursing Home in Euless, Texas, where he spent the last year of his life. He is survived by his wife, Odessa Nunn of Cooper; daughters, Shirel Jean Fulmer and Teressa Evonee Cozzens, both of Euless; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Ruby Aline Hohenberger of Fredricksburg, Texas.

William Eldridge Coffman, 87

Funeral services for William Eldridge Coffman of Commerce were held Friday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. in Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Rev. Roy Lee Dittmar officiated at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Interment followed at Brashear Cemetery in Brashear.
Coffman was born on Dec. 26, 1912, in Hopkins County, the son of William and Nora Ellen Hatton Coffman. He was a longtime resident of Commerce. Coffman was a farmer in Hopkins County and a former City of Dallas employee. He was Baptist by faith.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Jewel Evelyn Teel, 87

Jewel Evelyn Teel of Lewisville, Texas, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, at a local nursing home. She was a native of Alabama and a homemaker. Funeral services were held yesterday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Flower Mound. Interment followed at the Greenwood Cemetery in Ft. Worth, with Dalton & Son Funeral Home of Lewisville in charge of arrangements. Survivors include her son, Don Culver and his wife, Othella, of Lewisville; sister, Geneva Gehring of Tyler; brothers, Homer Barber of Canton and Ernest Barber of Midland; grandson, Michael Culver; stepsons, Willie Teel and James Teel; stepdaughters, Mildred Brown and Beulah Wheatley; nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Richard J. Carpenter, 77

Funeral services for Richard J. (Dick) Carpenter of Sulphur Springs will be held Monday, Jan. 1, in West Oaks Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mike House officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery in the Branom Community with Ronnie Branscome, Billy Sam Elliott, James Frank Jones, Bobby Carpenter, Robert Carpenter and Glendale Tucker serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Neal Archie Baker, Richard Clinton Baker, Donald Carl Baker and Max (Poss) Baxter. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. tonight at West Oaks Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs. Carpenter died Saturday, Dec. 30, surrounded by his loving family at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Hopkins County on April 18, 1923, the son of Emmett B. and Zella Box Carpenter. On Sept. 7, 1943, he married Sudie E. Baker in Corpus Christi, Texas. She preceded him in death in 1991. He was also preceded in death by twin daughters, Sherry Gale and Jerry Dale on May 13, 1945. Carpenter was a graduate of Cumby High School and attended East Texas State Teachers College where he was an All-Star basketball player. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1946. He was Executive Director for the Boy Scouts of America, Northeast Texas Southeast Oklahoma Council from 1946 to 1955. From 1955 until 1987, he was a sales representative for Great American Insurance of Dallas and worked closely with local businesses and school districts and individuals providing service and sales for their group and personal insurance needs. During the years 1946 to 1978, he was a member of the Southern Basketball Officials Association. For 32 years his fall and winter nights were spent at area high school basketball games and tournaments. His officiating partners through the years included Dub Reeder, Harlan Irvin, Vaden Richey and Joe Bob Chastine. He was also affiliated with Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church and worked as a director of Mt. Zion Cemetery for many years. Carpenter is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Ronnie Branscome of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Rickie and Billy Sam Elliott of Sulphur Springs. Grandchildren include Lee Anne and Weldon Smith of Grand Prairie, Texas, Randall and Penny Branscome of McKinney, Texas, William S. (Trey) and Jennifer Elliott of Paris, Texas, and Richard Joel Elliott of Sulphur Springs. He is also blessed with seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Cemetery Association in care of Nita Herman, Route 1, Box 288, Commerce, Texas 75428.
