COMMERCE - Frances Elizabeth Potts, 95, of Commerce died Thursday in Commerce. There is a graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday at San Marcus City Cemetery.
She was born in McDade on April 21, 1902, to Rev. and Mrs. Edmund A. Potts. She moved to Commerce in 1931. She attended Southwest Texas State University. She earned her master's degree from George Peabody College and did additional work at the Universities of Tennessee, Colorado, Minnesota and Alaska.
She began teaching geology at East Texas State University in 1931 and later became assistant dean of women and director of women's residence halls. In 1947 she returned to the classroom as an assistant professor. She co-authored student and teacher editions of "The New Geography of Texas" in 1963 which was used as the state adopted text for ten years; a supplementary workbook for that textbook was published in 1964.
Miss Potts received a federal grant to compile and publish a "Master Book of Transparencies for World Geography" in 1965 and worked two years with two professors to produce "Texas in Maps - an Atlas for Home and School." She was also employed by Hidalgo County schools to write a pre-primer reading course for Spanish-speaking students and had several articles published in a nature magazine.
Miss Potts was president of the Texas Geography Association and was Texas Coordinator for the National Association for Geographic Education. She served six years on the Hunt County Board of Education.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on the board of trustees and administrations board. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma for 52 years, was recording secretary for Alpha State for two terms, was twice elected president of Beta Lambda Chapter of Hunt County and was presented the chapter's achievement award.
Surviving are a sister, Shirley Baldridge of Commerce; five nieces, Betty Piland of Austin, Jean Ruth and Otis Slaughter of Mount Vernon, Mary Chilton and Bud Barlow of Pleasanton, Calif., Judith Davis of Murrieta, Calif. and Fraye Stokes of San Marcos; nephew and wife, Charles T. and Louise Potts of Wheatland, Okla. and a sister-in-law, Annalee Potts of Wichita Falls.
Two brothers, Charles B. and George S. Potts, preceded her in death.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Willa Rizer
MADISON, Ohio - Willa McMinn Rizer, 88, of Madison and formerly of Greenville died Thursday in Madison. Funeral services are at 1 p.m.. Monday at Yoksovich Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Kelley officiating. Burial is in Laurel Point Cemetery in Carmichaels, Ohio.
Mrs. Rizer was born Oct. 24, 1909, in Cumberland Township, Pa.; the daughter of Water and Margaret Barnhart McMinn. She graduated from Cumberland High School in 1928. She was married to Harry Rizer on Oct. 28, 1927.
Mrs. Rizer was a former president of Crucible Council of Republican Women and a former member of the former Lady Penn Rebekahs Lodge. She was also a member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church and the Greene County Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She worked in the cosmetic department of Waynesburg, Pa. drug store.
Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Curtis of Greenville and Harriet Walters of Madison; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nellie Block of Nemacolin, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her husband on March 23,1984, and a brother, Paul McMinn.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Edith Weatherbee
Edith "Mickey" Weatherbee, 66, of Commerce died Thursday at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. Graveside services are at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Robert Tollison officiating.
The daughter of Willie Charles Shell and Rissy Shell, she was born in Waynesville, N.C. on Aug. 6, 1931. She married George Edward Weatherbee in Rockwall on Oct. 13, 1956. Mrs. Weatherbee was a nurse's aide at Oak Manor Nursing Home. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband of Commerce; three sons, Richard Weatherbee of Campbell, Eddie Weatherbee of Commerce and Charles Shell of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Diana Greer of Commerce and Darlene Weatherbee of Corfu, N.Y.; a sister, Joann Gomez of Lewisville; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents and a brother, Frank Shell, preceded her in death.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home. The funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Clarence Hughes
CADDO MILLS - Clarence Hanchey Hughes, 76, of Caddo Mills died Wednesday in Dallas. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at the Church of Christ with Ray Hunter officiating. Burial is in the Caddo Mills I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
He was born in Hunt County on Dec. 14, 1920 to Clarence Elvin Hughes and Clemmie Woodall Hughes. He married Dorothy Harrington on Oct. 23, 1946 in Greenville. He served in the Army Air Borne during World War II. He was a retired stock clerk with E-Systems. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife of Caddo Mills; a son, Stephen Hughes of Caddo Mills; three daughters, Patricia Aston and Kathy Carrell, both of Caddo Mills and Cherry Myse of Royse City; two brothers, Milton Hughes and J.W. Hughes, both of Caddo Mills; three sisters, Birdie Mae Pitts and Betty McCasland, both of Caddo Mills and Wanda McCasland of Rockwall and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Odessa Burkett

Ruby Schmid
COMMERCE - Ruby K. Schmid, 73, of Commerce died Wednesday morning at her home after a lengthy illness. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel in McKinney with Rev. Charles Strickland of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Commerce officiating. Burial is in Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen.
She was born in Otto, Falls County, on July 4, 1924, daughter of Ed and Lydia Lehrmann Krumnow. She married Robert (Bob) Schmid on March 25, 1946 in Marlin. She and her husband farmed for many years. After retiring they moved to Commerce. Mrs. Schmid was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Commerce.
She is survived by her husband of Commerce; a son, Carroll Schmid of Commerce; a sister, Gwen Sanders of Navasota; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; an aunt and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister.
Nephews Larry Krumnow, Joe Kmiec, Tom Schmid, Doug Peavy, Rodney Krumnow and Dean Schmid will serve as pallbearers.
Bobbie Scroggins
LONE OAK - Bobbie M. Scroggins, 85, of Lone Oak died Wednesday at Baylor Medical Center from complications of heart bypass surgery. Private graveside services aree at 2 p.m. Friday in Asbury Cemetery in Edom with Rev. Robert Cook officiating.
The daughter of Richard L. and Alice Blackwell Shaver, she was born Feb. 19, 1912 in Madisonville. She married A.C. Scroggins in Corsicana. Mrs. Scroggins was a retired typesetter and had lived in the community since 1980. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Madisonville.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary F. Alsup of Lone Oak and Billie R. Henderson of Wylie; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Her husband of 35 years preceded her in death in 1962 and she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Jo Smith in 1967 and two grandchildren.

Ray Felty
Ray E. Felty of Richardson died Tuesday at Columbia Medical Center in Plano. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Lyons, Hubert Lytle and Newton Buckley officiating. Burial is in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City.
Son of George Felty and Mattie Ethel Puryear Felty, he was born in Hunt County on July 22, 1914. He married Katharyne McCarroll in Garland on Dec. 21, 1935.
Mr. Felty was a retired school teacher and principal of Wallace Elementary School in Richardson and Goodwin Junior High in Paducah. He was a member of First Christian Church in Paducah. He was a former member of the Lions Club, TSTA and Texas Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving are his wife of Richardson; two daughters, Dorotha Sandefur of Lubbock and Berny Ann Long of Burkburnett; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Castle, Larry Lansford, Fred McWhorter, Dan Bartosh Jr., Bill Thompson and Newton Buckley.

Linda Hart
DeSOTO - Linda Mae Hart of DeSoto died Monday in Dallas. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in DeSoto with Dr. Bart Smith officiating. Burial will be in Little Bethel Memorial Park in Duncanville.
She was born in Garza County on Sept. 19, 1942. She graduated from Slaton High School in 1960 and attended West Texas State University. Mrs. Hart was a member of the First United Methodist Church of DeSoto.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Hart of DeSoto; two sons, Mark Hart and Gary Hart, both of Dallas; mother-in-law, Sallye Hart of Greenville; a grandson and an aunt.
Visitation will be at West/Hurtt Funeral Home of DeSoto from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today. The funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Eugene Lindley Jr.
COMMERCE - Eugene "Gene" Lindley Jr., 83, of Commerce died Monday in Commerce. There will be a Masonic graveside service at 2 p.m. today at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce.
He was born in Century Community of Hunt County on March 1, 1914 to Eugene Lindley Sr. and Carrie Margaret Sladen Lindley. Mr. Lindley was a retired teacher. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Billy Wayne Moore of Garland; brother and sister-in-law, Deweese and Lora Dee Lindley of New Mexico and cousin Edna Keeble of Commerce.

Nellie Renfro
TIOGA - Nellie Gordon Renfro, 88, of Tioga died Tuesday at Columbia Medical Center in Denton. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Tioga with Rev. Cathy Frettwell and Rev. John Lancaster officiating. Burial will be in the Tioga Cemetery.
She as born July 1, 1909 in Terrell, Okla. to the late J.D. and Eva Gordon. She married Charles "Otis"Renfro in May, 1926 at the First Methodist Church in Aubrey. She and her husband operated a garage/service station for many years and also owned and operated a real estate office in Tioga, which she continued to operate after her husband's death in 1978. She closed the office in 1995.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Tioga for 75 years, where she served on the board of trustees. She was an active member of the community and was one of the founders of the Tioga Chamber of Commerce, of which she was an honorary member.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Charlene Brown of Tioga and Virginia and Kenneth Grundei of Sulphur Springs; a sister, Bernice Noah of Denton; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Huff/Slay Funeral Home in Tioga.

James Shaw
James V. Shaw of Greenville died Saturday at the V.A. Hospital in Dallas. There will be a memorial service at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel at 5 p.m. on Friday with Rev. Robert Baldridge officiating.
Born in Lewisburg, Tenn. on Dec. 26, 1932, he was the son of John Shaw and Lena Cooke. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Shaw was a member of Tawakoni V.F.W.
Survivors include his wife, Marge Manasco of Greenville; a son, David Shaw of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two daughters, Sharon Mainwaring and Sandra Fowler, both of Santa Rosa, Calif.; three sisters, Martha Davenport of Franklin, Tenn., Frances Adkins of Murfreesboro, Tenn. and Barbara Shaw of Fairfax, Va. and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Leroy Smith
QUINLAN - Leroy Smith, 77, of West Tawakoni, died Tuesday at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Quinlan LyBrand Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lonnie Erwin and Rev. Donald Upchurch officiating. There will be a graveside service at Providence Cemetery in Paris at 12:30 p.m.
Born in Paris on June 24, 1920, he was the son of Andrew and Ethar Goff Smith. He married Charlotte L. Durham Smith. He was a veteran. He worked for the federal government in supplies. Mr. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church in West Tawakoni. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge, City Council of West Tawakoni, Economic Development Council for Lake Tawakoni and he was retired from Red River Army Depot.
Survivors include his wife; a son, John Smith of Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Virginia Kidd of West Tawakoni; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Willie Mae Stiggers of Commerce died Friday at Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Temple Church of God in Christ, Commerce with Harold Pannell officiating. Burial will be in Rosemound Cemetery.
She was born in Naples on Aug. 16, 1913 to John and Maggie Hillis Stiggers. She married Dee Miles. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Temple Church of God in Christ.
Survivors include a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Born in Ladonia on Jan. 21, 1934, she was the daughter of James A. Shelton and Fannie F. Roland. She married George Crump in Hugo Okla., on Jan. 12, 1950. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Virginia M. Smith and Margie N. Norton, both of Waxahachie; two brothers, James Albert Shelton and John Thomas Chesser of Bonham; three sisters, Rose Etta Johnson of Greenville, Shirley Kelley of Dallas and Veda Shelton of Bonham; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Crump, on Jan. 9, 1977, two brothers and two sisters.

Born in Campbell on Oct. 13, 1919, she was the daughter of Jesse P. and Henrietta Cannon Bowen. She married D. B. English Jr. in Greenville on Jan. 30, 1937. She was a housewife and a member of Westview United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Phelps of Greenville; two brothers, J. Ross Bowen of Campbell and J. P. Bowen of Greenville; two grandchildren, Dennis Phelps of Carrollton ad Dean Shelton of Washington and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on May 6, 1973; her mother on Jan. 17, 1970; her father on Jan. 24, 1971; one brother and one sister.

Leonard Ridge
Services for Leonard E. Ridge, 69, of Greenville, are at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Peters Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott McManus officiating. Burial is in Memoryland Memorial Park with Masonic graveside rites and military honors. He died at his residence Friday after a 10-year battle with emphysema.
Born in Boston, Ind., on Sept. 1, 1928, he was the son of Arthur Charles Ridge and Georgia Maude Elkins. He married Frances Richmond in Muncie, Ind., on April 14, 1959. He moved to Greenville from Dayton, Ohio in 1961. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and E-Systems, was a member of the Living Word Church and the Greenville Masonic Lodge No. 335 AF and AM, where he served as secretary for the past 11 years and as past Worshipful Master.
He was a Shriner, coached Little League and was also a Junior Achiever at E-Systems.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon George Ridge; a sister, Luellen Carr and his parents.

Hilton Wallace
QUITMAN-Services for Hilton Eugene Wallace, 71, of Quitman, are at 2 p.m. today at Johnson Street Church of Christ in Greenville with Delton Alexander officiating. Burial is in the Prairie Valley Cemetery. He died Friday in Quitman.
Born in Campbell on Nov. 23, 1925, he was the son of Coleman Roy and Ura Estell Roberson Wallace. He graduated from Lone Oak High School in 1944, was a lifetime cattleman and was retired from Texas Instruments as a machinist.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II in France, Italy, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded a Marksman Badge, M-1 Carbine Range, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Pacific Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and a Bronze Star.
He was a member of Johnson Street Church of Christ and the Independent Cattlemen's Association of Texas.
He is survived by three sons, Windell Wallace of Princeton, Daymon Wallace of Alba and Dale Wallace of Hulbert, Okla.; two daughters, Rita Rainey of Okay, Okla. and Ruby Riley of Quitman; one step-daughter, Leticia Fuentes of Greenville; two brothers, Jack Wallace of Campbell and Wayne Wallace of Cash; two sisters, Lois Crouch of Dallas and Juanice Van Huss of Greenville; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter.

COMMERCE -Services for Linnia Mai Wright, 83, of Commerce, are at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Keith Boone officiating. Burial is in Rosemound Cemetery. She died Friday at her residence.
Born in Blue Ridge on Jan. 14, 1914, she was the daughter of George Arthur Press and Jessie Thompson. She married Welcome Wright on Nov. 28, 1935 in Waxahachie. She graduated from Blue Ridge High School and received a Bachelor Degree from East Texas Teacher's College in Commerce. She taught school in the Blue Ridge Independent School District and Texas A&M Consolidated School in College Station.
She moved to Commerce in 1955 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the DOE Rollins Sunday School class, the Afflatus Club, the University Dames and was active in the Nickle Coffee Club.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Kay and William Sloan Drake of Sherman; a daughter, Welynda Wright Johansen of Atlanta, Ga., three grandsons, Christopher Sloan Drake, Clifton William and Linda Drake and Stephen Jeffery Drake and one great-granddaughter, Lauren Taylor Drake.
She was preceded in death by her her husband, Welcome Wright on June 10, 1997 and two brothers.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or the Heritage House on the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus.
