Charles Ray Brown of Lake Elsinore, Calif., formerly of Greenville, died Oct. 31 in a California hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church in Greenville with Dr. Jerrion G. Smith III officiating. Burial will be in Grundy Memorial Park.
He was born in Greenville on June 10, 1946. He married Pamelo Jo Fields in Greenville in 1971. Mr. Brown was a school custodian. He was a member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Perris, Calif.
Survivors include his wife of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; his mother, Hattie Brown of Greenville; a son, Michael Henderson of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; four daughters, Marguerite Jean Salcido, Charlene Brown, Hattie Brown and Pamela Nicole Brown, all of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; two brothers, Frederick Brown and Joe Michael Brown, both of Greenville; a sister, Novella Simpson of Dallas and one grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Craig Brown, Mario Brown, Keith Green, Andre Salcido and Douglas Brown.

Tessie Mayo
CADDO MILLS- Tessie Fay Mayo, 72, of Copeville, died Thursday in Rowlett. Funeral services will be at the First Baptist Church in Copeville at 10 a.m. today with Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery.
She was born April 5, 1925 to Walter J. Mansco and Essie M. Duncan Manasco. She married Josh Dan Mayo on May 20, 1944. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Mayo was a member of Copeville Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of Copeville; two sons, James Walter Mayo of Copeville and Dan Mayo of Sachse; two daughters, Linda Louise Rich of Nevada and Dianna Lynn Bright of Rockwall; a brother, Vernon Manasco; two sisters, Gladys Dossey and Lucy Rhoades of Arkansas; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were three brothers, Dewell, Doss and Blair Manasco.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Rushing, Philip Milligan, Bean Baker, Lewis Rich, Tammy Watkins and Mike Green.

Mildred Grantham
Mildred Grantham, 83, of Commerce, died Wednesday at Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce. No services are planned.
She was born Feb. 3, 1914 in Dayton, Ken. to Thomas Troy and Bertha Chin. She married Lynn F. Grantham on May 12, 1945, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Grantham was a retired bookkeeper.
She is survived by a son, Craig Grantham of Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter, Karen Grantham of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Carol Grantham of Greenville; a sister, Helen Troy of Fort Thomas, Ken.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband; a son, a sister and a half-brother.
Memorials may be made to Texas A&M-Commerce for the Dennis Grantham Scholarship Fund.

Billy Horton
Billy F. Horton of Greenville died Tuesday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Humboldt Cemetery with Rev. Humborto DeLeon officiating.
Born in Greenville on Dec. 3, 1956, he was the son of Alvin Lee Horton and Oller Francis Mitchell. He married Cathy Baldras on Aug. 22, 1994 in Hunt County. He was a self-employed tractor mechanic. Mr. Horton was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife of Greenville; two sons, Billy Joe Horton of Daingerfield and Alvin Allan Horton of Greenville; a daughter, Thesa Nicole Horton of Greenville and a brother, Bruce Horton of Greenville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dr. James Lacy
COMMERCE Ð Dr. James Maxwell "Max" Lacy, 84, of Commerce died Tuesday in Greenville. Funeral services will be at Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday with Dr. Bobby Tollison officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City.
He was born in Wolfe City on Feb. 6, 1913, to E. Clayton Lacy and Josephine Barker. He and Jennie B. Titus were married in Greenville on May 24, 1936.
Dr. Lacy was a longtime resident of Hunt County. He received his B.A. degree in 1936 and his M.A. degree in 1940 from East Texas State Teachers College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas and the University of Chicago.
Dr. Lacy began teaching in 1934 and taught elementary and senior high schools in Greenville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during World War II. He served as a flight instructor at Sheppard Air Force Base and later was flight inspector at Douglas Aircraft in Oklahoma City.
After the war, he returned to teaching and taught chemistry at Highland Park Senior High School and joined the English Department at Texas A&I University. He was an English instructor at East Texas State Teachers College. He established the first reading laboratory at East Texas State University in 1953 and became professor of English in 1958.
He also was chairman of the Department of English, chairman of the Building Committee for the renovation of the Hall of Languages and chairman of the Search Committee for a department head.
Dr. Lacy wrote"New Mexican Women in Early American Writings" published by the University of New Mexico Press and his article "Folklore of the South and Racial Discrimination" was published in the Texas Folklore Society Publications in 1964. The article was later anthologized in "The Dark and Tangled Path: Race in America" published by Houghton Mifflin. Dr. Lacy retired in 1978 and during his retirement he wrote a novel "The Young Texian" and an article "Must Science and Religion Continue to Conflict?"
Dr. Lacy was a member of the First Baptist Church, Kiwanis Club and the Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving are his wife of Commerce; two sons, Dr. Gerald M. Lacy of San Angelo and Dr. Larry W. Lacy of Fairfax, Va.; two sisters, Chloe Tanner of Rowlett and Irma Phillips of Dallas; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Dale Bedgood, Dr. Trezzie Pressley, Wayne Maples, Jim Kizer, Jack Chapin and Joe Hawkins.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Maggie Lacy
CADDO MILLS Ð Maggie Lacy, 95, of Greenville, died Tuesday in Greenville. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Rentfrow Funeral Home Chapel, Caddo Mills, with Rev. Hollis Crow officiating. Burial will be in the Caddo Mills I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
She was born in Hunt County on March 24, 1902, to William M. Bragg and Frances Jane Youngblood Bragg. She married Frank M. Lacy on June 23, 1917 in Caddo Mills. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Lacy was a member of New Hope Light House Church.
Surviving are a son, Floyd M. Lacy of Caddo Mills; a daughter, Willie Jo Poteet of Longview; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on July 2, 1962; two brothers, John Pitts and Murl Bragg and a sister, Lessie Wallace.
Opal Kennedy
Opal Annette Cloud Kennedy, 62, of Alba died Thursday In Tyler. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Greenville with Rev. Melvin Ray officiating. Burial will be in Memoryland Memorial Park.
Mrs. Kennedy was born on Nov. 11, 1934 in LeFlore County, Okla., the daughter of Chester R. and Annette Carter Cloud. She married Bobby Joe Kennedy on Dec. 22, 1952 in Fort Smith, Ark. She was a retired caterer and custom cake baker from a business she shared with her daughter in Greenville. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Alba and a former member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Greenville.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Johnny J. Kennedy of Rendon, Texas and Larry L. Kennedy of Garland; three daughters, Dana D. Kennedy Riley of Garland, Sandra D. Kennedy Fields of Greenville, and Linda C. Kennedy Moore of Greenville; two sisters Erma Carter of Dewar, Okla. and Doris Moore of Spiro, Okla.; and 13 grandchildren.
Pallbearers are her grandson, Casey Kennedy and nephews, Carroll Carter, Philip Carter, Eric Carter, Tom Butler Jr., Jimmy Kennedy and Bill White.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Peters Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
Don Taylor
KERRVILLE - Don Taylor of Kerrville, died Oct. 5 at his home after a lengthy illness. There was a private burial at Bethel Cemetery in Greenville.
He was born Aug. 7, 1927 in Greenville to Clyde B. and Juan Ard Taylor. He married Margie Douthit on Sept. 15, 1945. Mr. Taylor was a retired antique dealer.
Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Dorene Taylor of Irving and Sue Taylor Spencer of Dallas; a sister-in-law, Helen Douthit Mulkey of Garland; a niece and several nephews.
Frances Curington
FARMERSVILLE - Frances Louise Curington, 68, of California, died Saturday. There is a graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Farmersville with George Grieb officiating.
The daughter of Burl Wesley and Lillian Grace Curington, she was born in Texas on Oct. 4, 1931. She worked for Kaiser Permanente.
Surviving is a sister, Madalynne Doyle of Mesquite.

Emma Holley
COMMERCE - Funeral services for Emma D. Holley, 87, of Commerce are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Wesley McCasland, Rev. Don Shovan and grandson Brandon Newman officiating. Burial is in Rosemound Cemetery.
She died Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital.
She was born April 13, 1912 in Rains County, daughter of Warren Ferrel Thomas and Willie Weatherbee Thomas. She and W.E. "Bo" Holley were married Sept. 29, 1928 in Commerce.
She was a housewife and a charter member of Congregational Methodist Church and a member of Commerce Rebekah Lodge.
Mrs. Holley is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nelma and Gaston Dodd of Klondike, grandchildren Tommie Joe Dodd of Fort Worth, Joette and Jace English of Canton and Colette and Lloyd Dean Newman of Campbell and great-grandchildren Jessica Newman of Campbell, Brandon Newman of Campbell and Johnathen Tribble of Canton.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 17, 1992; two brothers and a great-granddaughter, Christina Tribble.

POINT - Elsie Lee Hooten, 85, of Tomball died Wednesday at the Tomball Hospital. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Point Funeral Home with Richard Kellum officiating. Burial is in Lynch Cemetery.
The daughter of Joe and Mattie Pitner, she was born Aug. 31, 1914 in Rains County. She married Edward C. Hooten in Rains County in May 1933.
Mrs. Hooten was a housewife. She was a member of Church of Christ.
She is survived by two sons, J.C. Hooten of Magnolia and James E. Hooten of Pinehurst; four daughters, Katherine Smith of Point, Mattie Free of Magnolia, Chloe House of Mesquite and Linda Gray of Royse City; two sisters, Genevia and Johnnie Jo and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two infant sons, three sisters and a brother.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

LEXINGTON, S.C. - Ruth Sharpe Kind, formerly of Hunt County, died Monday at Hinton Home in Farmersville. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington with Rev. Derrick Gardner and Rev. Robert Ward officiating. Burial is in Southland Memorial Gardens.
Born in Columbia, S.C., she was the daughter of Arthur C. and Mary Alice Roberts Sharpe. She married Artie J. Kind. Mrs. Kind was a member of West Columbia Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Linda K. and Joseph Goss of Greenville; sisters Susie Bass of South Carolina, Mary Williams and Margaret Sharpe of Swansea, S.C., and Katherine Jacob, Frances Scott and Cheryl Sherman, all of Columbia, S.C.; brothers Jack Q. Sharpe of Lakeland, Fla. and Arthur D. Sharpe of Lexington, S.C. and grandchildren Tiffany D. Goss, Joseph and Jennifer Goss, all of Greenville.

Georgia Rountree
Georgia M. Rountree, 88, of Hunt County died Wednesday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville following a short illness. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Peters Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill McNatt officiating. Burial is in Forest Park Cemetery.
The daughter of George Henry McLeroy and Sabina Gafford McLeroy, she was born Aug. 19, 1911 in Hunt County and she lived in Hunt County all her life. On Dec. 24, 1935 she married William Henry Rountree in Lone Oak.
Mrs. Rountree was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church and was active in Sunday School and the ladies' church circle group.
She is survived by a daughter, Mildred Compton of Greenville; grandson and wife Tra and Kathy Williams of Merit; stepgranddaughter and husband Pam and Greg Hendricks of Farmersville; stepgrandson and wife Tommy and Vickie Compton of Arlington; several nieces and nephews and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Her husband preceded her in death Oct. 10, 1992; her parents; four brothers and four sisters.
Pallbearers are Jim Davis, Bob McLeroy, Mike Richardson, Ronnie Hogue, Jack Wade and Fred Gaulden.
Rosa Rutherford
COMMERCE - Rosa Belle Rutherford, 92, of Commerce, died Wednesday at Oak Manor Nursing Center. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel with David Gibson officiating. Burial is in Rosemound Cemetery.
She was born March 27, 1907 in Hunt County to William Thomas Venus and Artie Missie Hopkins. On Dec. 6, 1924 she and Charlie B. Rutherford were married in Hunt County.
A lifelong resident of Commerce, Mrs. Rutherford attended Theda School. She was a dietitian for Commerce Presbyterian Hospital and for the Commerce Independent School District, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are a son, Charles Ray Rutherford Sr. of Canon Lake; a daughter, Mary Frances Wood of Commerce; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981, a brother and five sisters.
Pallbearers are Tom Dillinger, Harold Lands, Leon Walden, Bill Webb, Howard Lambert and Delton Gibson.

L.D. Shaw
EMORY - L.D. Shaw, 67, of Emory died Tuesday at his home on Lake Fork in Rains County. There is a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Norman Finke officiating. Burial is in Emory City Cemetery.
Born May 9, 1932 in Ellis County and a longtime resident of Ellis County, he was the son of David Shaw and Ruby Mae Carlton.
Mr. Shaw was an instructor of Mill Wright Local 1421 Apprentice Program and a retired highway patrol officer. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Shaw is survived by two sons, Glenn Shaw of Emory and Mike Shaw of Waxahachie; two daughters, Gwen Hacker of Waxahachie and Cindy Proffitt of Midlothian; brother Donal Ray Shaw of Athens; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

O.F. "Don" Slatter, 78, of Washougal, Wash., formerly of Lake Oswego, Ore., died Monday. There is a graveside service at Memoryland Memorial Park, 1 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Robert Baldridge officiating.
Mr. Slatter was born Dec. 15, 1921 in Alba. He served in the U.S. Army/Air Force in the 356th Fighter Group. He worked in repair and installation for D.S. Refrigeration in Washougal, Wash.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine W. Slatter of Washougal, Wash.; stepson Ronald Mattfield of Camas, Wash.; two daughters, Marilyn Powell of Mollala, Ore. and Chris Egger of Oriville, Calif.; stepdaughter Anita Wiltfong of Camas, Wash.; a sister, Bonnie Woddell of Kerrville; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Connie Ray Vaughn and a sister, Georgia Murl Tiffin.

Hubert Terry
A graveside service for Hubert Hendrix Terry, 79, of Greenville is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Memoryland Memorial Park. Dr. Raymond Anderson Boulter Jr. will officiate.
He died Tuesday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville.
The son of Willis Riley Terry and Jessie Myrtle Coon Terry, he was born May 3, 1920 in Floyd.
Mr. Terry was a music teacher for 40 years and was a member of Central Christian Church.
He is survived by a brother-in-law, Sandy Shields of Fort Worth; cousin Sally Fred Turner of Greenville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Annette Shields and two brothers, Becton Terry and Wade Terry.
