Jolene Tarpley

COMMERCE- Jolene Connatser Tarpley died at her residence near Commerce on Wednesday after a battle with cancer. Funeral services are at 3:30 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Commerce with Rev. Mike House officiating. Private graveside services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas with Rev. Mike House, Joe Smith, Jim Jordan and Joe Jack Mills officiating.

She was born in Dallas on May 29, 1943 and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. She received B.A. and M.S. degrees from East Texas State University and taught first grade at Charles A. Gill Elementary School in Dallas for five years.

On Feb. 22, 1969, she married Fred Tarpley and moved to Commerce, where she directed the Little Ark Pre-School at the First United Methodist Church, supervised student teachers for East Texas State University and for the past 12 years taught second grade at Commerce Elementary School.

Mrs. Tarpley was an active member of PEO, Commerce Thalian Club, the First United Methodist Church in Commerce and several professional organizations. She was a collegiate member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and was later chapter advisor.

She is survived by her husband; children Ted of Austin, Marie of Commerce and Mark of Commerce; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Roscoe Connatser of Dallas; mother-in-law, Adelle Tarpley of Commerce; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Miville of Dallas; two cousins, Dudley Patterson of Dallas and Frank Patterson of Celeste; aunts; uncles; a nephew; two great-nephews; a great-niece and cousins.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are Dennis Anderson, Mike Barker, Ben Doughty, Clarence Jensen, Jim Latham, Bob Mills, Jim Patton, Otha Spencer and Wyman Williams.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Commerce.

Pemberton Funeral Home of Commerce is in charge of arrangements.

Gladis Willis

Gladis Roosevelt Willis of Greenville died Monday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. W.C. Clark officiating. Burial is in Grundy Memorial Park.

The son of Gomar and Martha Ann Flournoy Willis, he was born Dec. 25, 1911 in Quitman. He married Helen R. Hardaway on Oct. 7, 1991 in Greenville.

Mr. Willis was a retired employee of the City of Greenville. He was a Baptist.

Surviving are three sons, Marvin L. Willis of Houston and Rev. Russell L. Willis and Gary L. Willis, both of Greenville; three daughters, Gwendolyn Pacen of Greenville and Loretta Griffith and Joann Warren, both of Dallas; one brother, Thomas Jennings of Greenville; a sister, Rose Marie Willis of Dallas; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one sister and two brothers.

Pallbearers are Lorenzo Boldware, James Gipson, Ralph Halton, Chester Lee, Buddy Barrett and Paul Scott.

Visitation is from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Cozine & Tarver Funeral Home Chapel.

Pauline Vanderslice

ROCKWALL - Pauline Vanderslice, 76, of Dallas died Wednesday. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Rest Haven Funeral Home, Rockwall Chapel. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Forney.

She was born May 28, 1921 in Mesquite.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou and Tommy Roberts of Greenville; a son and daughter-in-law, R.D. and Lynn Vanderslice of Rockwall; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Robert D. Vanderslice Sr., preceded her in death.

Myrtis Russell

CADDO MILLS - Myrtis Mozelle Russell, 66, of Nevada died Tuesday in Plano. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday at Rentfrow Funeral Home Chapel in Caddo Mills with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Burial is in Memoryland Cemetery in Greenville.

Born in Merit on Dec. 6, 1931, she was the daughter of James Welch Buchanan and Mary Mandy Shaw Buchanan. She married Le Roy Russell on Jan. 28, 1955 in Greenville. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband of Nevada; a son, Richard Russell of Poetry; three daughters, Marvella Sue Samples of Nevada, Mary Jane McGaffie of Royse City and Debbie Elaine Chambers of Hillsboro; two brothers, Jerry Wayne Buchanan of Las Vegas and W.G. Buchanan of Greenville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Don Buchanan.

Pallbearers are Merle Watson, Henry Grimes, Willis Monroe, Dale Bennet, Allen House and Mike Sperling.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sceva Crofford

EMORY - Sceva Crofford, 89, of Lone Oak, died Tuesday at Green Acres Nursing Home in Emory. Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas with Rev. Nick Sanders and Rev. Ed Carpenter officiating.

The son of S.S. and Lara Mae Cooper Crofford, he was born in Sparman, Okla. on May 11, 1908. He married Bessie Mae Northcutt in Dallas on May 11, 1986. He was a carpenter and a member of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include his wife of Lone Oak; two sons, Glen Northcutt of Ben Wheeler and James Thomas of Greenville; a daughter, Delores Goode of Lone Oak; Rose Eaton of Oklahoma and Cassie Melton of Utah; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Tom.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home of Emory.

William F. Hinton

William F. Hinton, 86, of Carriage House Nursing Home died Monday at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs. Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Memoryland Memorial Park with Ollie William and James Walter Drake officiating.

He was born in Leonard on July 9, 1911 to Mac and Velma Hinton. He married Mary Louise Melville in Greenville on June 1, 1940. He was employed by International Milling Co. Mr. Hinton was a member of the Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife of Greenville; three daughters, Margaret Ann Land of Ardmore, Okla., Dolores Jean Drake of Daingerfield and Patricia Louise Haynes of Allen; two brothers, M.D. Hinton of Mountain Home, Idaho and Homer Lee Hinton of Plano; three sisters, Frances Young of Fort Worth, Lorene Townsend of Tyler and Jaunita Hinton of Winona; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Grandsons Michael Lynn Land, Phillip Austin Land, Johnny Loard, Brian Christopher Haynes, Brian Britton and James Walter Drake will serve as pallbearers.

Coker-Mathews Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John L. Pickard

John L. Pickard, 85, of Greenville, died Sunday at his residence. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. today at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Stubblefield, Rev. Melvin Ray and Rev. Eddie Smith officiating. Burial is in Memoryland Memorial Park

The son of James Monroe Pickard and Rena Elizabeth Adkisson Pickard, he was born Jan. 7, 1913 in Quinlan. He and Bernice Durr were married in Hunt County in 1937.

He graduated from East Texas State University and was a retired school teacher. He was also a retired quality control aircraft inspector at E-Systems.

Mr. Pickard was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Golden K Kiwanis Club.

Surviving are his wife of Greenville; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and James Anderson of The Woodlands; grandchildren Suzanne Brown of Houston and Jeff Anderson of San Francisco, Calif. and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James R. Pickard in 1976 and Raymond Pickard in 1997 and a sister, Pauline Coomer.

Pallbearers will be S.L. Anderson, Bob Harwell, Leo Mauldin, Louis Blanton, Linton Moseley and J.D. Miller. Members of the Senior Adult Men's Sunday School Class at Ridgecrest Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Family Hospice, 2824 Terrell Road, Suite 403, Greenville, 75402 or to the American Cancer Society.

Edgar Barnes

AUSTIN - Services for Edgar N. Barnes, 90, of Austin, will be 2:30 p.m. today at Owens Funeral Home Chapel in Wolfe City with Rev. Ben Smith officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. He died Friday at an Austin hospital.

Born in Fulton, Miss., on July 27, 1907, he was the son of Henry Mattison and Sylvira Gossett Barnes. He married Willie M. Doyle on Oct. 30, 1927. She preceded him in death in April of 1976. He married Alma Stanford in November of 1976. He was a farmer and a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Barnes; two brothers, Ralph Barnes of Greenville and Lowie Barnes; four sons, James Barnes of Paris, Ronald Barnes of Tyler, William Barnes of Quitman and Tommy Barnes of El Paso; two stepsons, Bobby Barnes of Golden, Colo. and Bennie Barnes of Carrollton; four stepdaughters, Alma Nell Spurlock of Westminster, Colo., Beverly Barnes of Austin, Cheryl Green of Austin and Ramona Abernathy of Austin; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Carmel Cemetery Association in Wolfe City or to the American Cancer Society.

Shirley Wright

WOLFE CITY-Services for Shirley Lee Wright, 50, of Wolfe City will be 10 a.m. Monday at Owens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dickson Ayers officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. She died Saturday at home.

Born in Henrietta, Okla., on Feb. 12, 1948, she was the daughter of P. D. "Doc" and Mabel E. Yowell Hammer. She married Charles W. Wright in Wolfe City on June 12, 1965. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Wolfe City and was retired from Ennis-Texas Tag Co.

She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Wright of Wolfe City; two brothers, Loye Hammer of Poteau, Okla. and Richard Hammer of Granis, Ark.; five sisters, Frances George of Mansfield, Betty George of Wolfe City, Dorothy Dearick of Quinlan, Charlotte McDaniel of Weatherford and Mary Dunigan of Poteau, Okla.; three sons, Stephen Wright of Savoy, Charles M. Wright of Greenville and Mark Wright of Wolfe City; a daughter, Susan Stedry of Lindale; seven grandchildren and 40 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Pallbearers will include Sam Perry, Tommy Jones, Valton Ticer, Tommy Burks, Billy Don Burks and Johnny Phillips.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lee Kitchens

LADONIA -Services for Lee T. Kitchens, 79, of Ladonia, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Owens Funeral Home in Wolfe City with Rev. Kenneth Ballard officiating. Burial will be in Mr. Carmel Cemetery. He died Friday at a Greenville hospital.

Born in Wood County on Nov. 11, 1918, he was the son of Lee T. Kitchens Sr. He married Anna Fay Cockrun in Sulphur Springs on Dec. 9, 1939. He was a farmer and a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Fay Kitchens of Ladonia; one brother, Earnest Kitchens of Gilmer; four sons, Curtis L. Kitchens of The Colony, Billy T. Kitchens of Peachtree, Ga., Jackie Kitchens of Ladonia and Charles Kitchens of Red Oak; one daughter, Joan McLaughlin of Ovilla; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 until 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bert Henry

QUINLAN - Services for Bert Henry, 81, of Quinlan, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Quinlan Lybrand Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Oliver officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Oaks in Mesquite. He died Friday in Greenville.

Born Oct. 11, 1916, he was the son of Samuel Bates and Ollie Jane Williams Henry Jr.

He married Hughlene Oliver Henry. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a paint contractor.

He is survived by a sister, Mable A. Wallace of Mesquite; three sons, Edwin H. Henry of Jackson, Miss., William "Bob" R. Henry of Mesquite and Haskell B. Henry of Balch Springs; three daughters, Melba L. Edwards of Athens, Judy Pankov of Austin and Janie Sims of Abilene; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy E. Henry and C. C. Henry and one sister, Sammie L. Dalton.

Pallbearers will include Edwin Henry, Bob Henry, Haskell Henry, Tom Sims, Ron Henry, Scott Henry, Donald Henry, Jack Carpenter and Sam Edwards.

Reubene Hicks

Mrs. Reubene Hicks of Memphis, Tenn. died Wednesday at St. Francis Nursing Home in Memphis. Graveside services are at Memoryland Memorial Park, Greenville at 11 a.m. Saturday with Rick Henslee officiating.

She was born in Henry County, Tenn. on July 1, 1915 to Marvin Taylor and Eva Hutson Taylor. She and James E. Hicks were married in Dallas on March 25, 1951. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Hicks was a member of Whitestation Church of Christ in Memphis.

She is survived by a sister, Valda Wasson of Memphis, Tenn. Her husband preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1976.

Memorials may be made to Whitestation Church of Christ in Memphis.

Coker-Mathews Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Parks

Graveside services for John Earle Parks of Quinlan will be at 2 p.m. today at Josephine Cemetery with Rev. Larry Krohn officiating. He was last seen Nov. 24, 1997.

Born in Dallas on Aug, 5, 1952, he was the son of R.E. Parks and Betty Eubanks Parks. Mr. Parks was in the building trade. He was a Methodist.

He is survived by his mother of Quinlan, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his father on March 14, 1997, and a brother, James M. Parks in 1971.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Shirley, Ricky Sharp, Bobby Allen, Eric Russell, Gary Holcomb and James Ellis.

Coker-Mathews Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Claude Williams

Rev. Claude J. Williams of Greenville died Feb. 28 at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Bethel AME Church, with Rev. W.D. Hines officiating. Burial is in East Mount Cemetery.

Born in Gilmer on Jan. 13, 1936, he was the son of Tessie Mae Portley and Chester Williams Sr. He married Janice Lynn Talley on April 28, 1979 in Paris. He was the minister at Carter Temple CME Church.

Survivors include his wife of Greenville; his stepmother, Lois Williams of Greenville ; two sons, Michael Williams and Philip Williams, both of Greenville; six daughters, Janice M. Dennis of Antioch, Calif., Brenda Andrews, Claudene Williams, and Tammy L. Williams of Greenville, Francene Hayes of Denver, Colo. and Tammy Tiner of Emory; two brothers, Chester Williams Jr. of Greenville and Roy L. Fletcher of Cleburne; five sisters, Essie Thompson of Houston, Delvin Johnson and Evelyn Ervin of Greenville, Janice F. Fletcher of Dallas and Sharon Outland of Springfield, Va.; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Lawson, Curtis Williams, Chester Lee, Larry Jackson, Shelton Jones, Chester Dixon and Rev. Maurice Blaylock.
