COMMERCE - Dr. Joseph Rice Saylor Sr., 87, of Commerce died Tuesday in Greenville. Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Brigham Cemetery in Campbell. Rev. Charles Neal will officiate.
The son of Dr. J.C. Saylor and Birdie Shackelford, he was born in Missouri on June 14, 1911. He and Fern Lucille Yost were married Sept. 18, 1932 in Lamar, Mo.
His undergraduate studies were at Southwestern State College in Springfield, Mo. He earned his masters degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas, Austin. He moved to Commerce from Austin in 1944.
Dr. Saylor taught at Weatherford Junior College and taught one semester at John Tarleton University in Stephenville. He was pre-law advisor and served as sponsor advisor for the Wesley Foundation at East Texas State University. He retired in 1974.
Dr. Saylor was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir and taught Sunday School.He was a member of Danforth National Organization.
Surviving are two sons, Neale Saylor of Commerce and Joe Saylor Jr. of Mesquite; a sister-in-law, Oldine Saylor of Dallas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife on June 1, 1995 and two brothers, John and James Saylor.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Choir in Commerce.

Jo Lee Black
Jo Lee Black of Northport, Ala., formerly of Greenville, died Sunday in Northport. There is a graveside service Thursday at 2 p.m. at Memoryland Memorial Park with Rev. Benjamin Shinn officiating.
She was born May 26, 1904 in Pawnee, Okla. to John Harrison Crismon and Susan Julia Bowls Crismon. She and Waldo Black were married Oct. 27, 1935 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Mrs. Black lived in Greenville for 50 years before moving to Northport, Ala. and she was a member of Kavanaugh United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Kerwin Black of Greenville; a daughter, Kathy Allen of Northport, Ala.; a sister, Helen Bailey of Denton and grandchildren Bryan Black and Shannon Black of Greenville, Marka Forky and Leigh-Ann Black of Campbell and David Allen and Katie Allen of Northport, Ala.
Her husband preceded her in death.
Pallbearers are Barry Stockhoff, Lewis Blanton, Derl Morrison, Gene Devers, Bryan Black and Howard Davis.

Jack Horton
Funeral services for Jack W. Horton of Greenville are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glenn Cook officiating. Burial is in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Quinlan.
He died Tuesday at Briarcliff Health Center.
The son of David Woodson Horton and Ola Mae Greer Horton, he was born March 2, 1934 in Van Sickle community in Hunt County. He married Sylvania Birchfield on May 22, 1954 in Greenville. Mr. Horton was a farmer.
Surviving are a daughter, Jackie Montgomery of Greenville; brothers Steve Horton of Austin, James Horton of Dallas, Paul Horton of Cumby, Loyd Horton of Paris and Clifford Horton, Bobby Horton, Buddy Horton and Johnny Horton, all of Celeste; sisters Ruth Cook of Greenville, Mary Spradling of Leonard and Barbara Moody of Plano; grandson Thomas Bates of Greenville and great-grandsons Ryan and Jason Bates of Greenville; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Feb. 3, 1998; his parents; one son, one brother and one sister.
Pallbearers are Daryl Montgomery, Robert Singleton, Gene Davis, Clay Moody, Milton Sasser and Billy Cook.

Timothy McLain
Timothy E. McLain, 51, of Celeste died Monday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. No services are planned.
He was born Oct. 29, 1946 in Glendale, Calif., son of Theodore N. McLain and Roberta Abbott. He served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. McLain was a technical engineer with Alcatel Network Systems.
Surviving are his parents of Apple Valley, Calif.; three sons, Zachary McLain and Gary McLain and Sean McLane of Celeste and a sister, Nancy Davis of Illinois.

J.O. Nelson
SULPHUR SPRINGS - Funeral services for J.O. Nelson, 68, of Miller Grove are at 2 p.m. Thursday at West Oaks Funeral Home Chapel in Sulphur Springs. Burial is in the Miller Grove Cemetery.
He died Monday at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Born in Camp County on Dec. 15, 1929, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Otis Nelson. He was a retired 43-year supervisor of aircraft electrical systems, employed with Raytheon Systems in Greenville. He served in the United States Navy.
Mr. Nelson was a Baptist and had resided in Miller Grove since 1985. He married Lea Garrett in Shady Grove on Aug. 31, 1985.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Truitt Nelson of Marietta, Ga. and David Nelson and Rick Nelson of Greenville; a daughter, Sheila McMahan of Riverside, Calif.; three stepsons, Gregg Abbott and Chris Abbott of Greenville and E.D. Franks Jr. of Denton; two stepdaughters, Jeri Lea English of Saltillo and Fonda Hurley of Sulphur Springs; three brothers, Lee Ovis Nelson and Mark Nelson of Pittsburg and Charlie Nelson of Mesquite; three sisters, Juanita Bullard, Juanice Wilhelm and Vita Locke, all of Pittsburg and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Cleo Nelson and a sister, Bert Ramey.

Sylvia Taylor
LEONARD - Funeral services for Sylvia Taylor, 74, of Trenton, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Taylor Funeral Home Chapel in Leonard. Burial is in the Burns Cemetery in Trenton.
She died Monday at the Texoma Medical Center in Denison.
She was born Aug. 16, 1925 in Clarksville, daughter of Samuel Robert Isbell and Edith Louvine Norman Isbell. She married W.T. Taylor on June 5, 1953 in Trenton.
Mrs. Taylor was a retired technician for Dallas Family Hospital in Oak Cliff. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Trenton.
Surviving are her husband of Trenton; daughters Carolyn Brown of Batesville, S.C., Lottie Noble of Gilmer, Marion Brown of Trenton and Billie Kay Sherrell of Corsicana; a son, Sammy Sims of Bullard; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Betty Cook
COMMERCE - Betty Jane Cook, 57, of Campbell, died Sunday in Paris. Funeral services are at the Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. today with Rev. Terry Skaggs officiating. Burial is in Shady Grove Cemetery in Campbell.
She was born in Hunt County on April 24, 1941; the daughter of William Pierson Quisenberry and Ruby Jane Browning. She married Olan M. Cook on July 22, 1966 in Greenville. A lifelong resident of Hunt County, she was a member of the Campbell City Council and was active in civic activities.
Mrs. Cook was the owner of Jane's Hair Fashion in Greenville for the past 20 years. She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are her husband of Campbell; a daughter, Arlene Wallace of Greenville; two sons, James Olan Cook of Campbell and Billy Joe Fouse Jr. of Austin; a sister, Ayne McKay of Commerce; two brothers, Richard Quisenberry of Marietta, Okla. and W.C. Quisenberry of Hillsboro; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Donald High
QUINLAN - Donald Lee "Cactus Jack" High, 64, of Quinlan died Sunday at Lake Point Medical Center in Rowlett. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. today at Quinlan LyBrand Funeral Home with Rev. Stone officiating. Burial is in Able Springs.
He was born in Cooper on Aug. 16, 1934. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Marines. Mr. High was a retired Baptist minister.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Owens High of Quinlan; sons Robert, Eric and Mark Allen High and Tony, Donald and Mark Owens; daughters Shelia Ferguson and Claudia High; two brothers, Charles High and Douglas Chandler; 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A.P. Johnson
SULPHUR SPRINGS - Funeral services for A.P. "Paul" Johnson, 75, of Sulphur Springs are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at West Oaks Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tommy Hall and Rev. Larry Kruger officiating. Burial is in Restlawn Memorial Park.
He died Sunday at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs following a brief illness.
Born in Wolfe City on Feb. 13, 1923, he was the son of E.A. and Clemmie Slatter Johnson. He had resided in Sulphur Springs for 32 years. He was a retired teacher, dairyman and farmer and he taught in the North Hopkins Schools of Hopkins County and in Hutchins Baptist School. He was also a longtime Gas Measurement Engineer with El Paso Natural Gas Company, retiring in 1965.
Mr. Johnson was a 1941 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School and a 1947 graduate of East Texas State Teachers College (Texas A&M), Commerce. He was a member of Davis Street Baptist Church.
He served in the United States Army Air Force in World War II, serving in Japan and the Western Pacific. He received the Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon and two bronze stars for Meritorious Service Award. He also served in Battles of Air Offensive Japan.
Mr. Johnson was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was active in the Veterans Memorial Fund for Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County. He was a member of the American Jersey Cattle Club and a member of Artema Fraternity of East Texas States Teachers College, Commerce.
He married Vera Ann Ponder in Sulphur Springs on June 24, 1950.
Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Lisa Johnson of Greenville; daughter and son-in-law Kamilla Johnson and George Fenati of Houston; two brothers, Kenneth Johnson of College Station and Charles Johnson of Sulphur Springs; mother-in-law Josephine "Josie" Ponder of Sulphur Springs; an aunt, Mae Martin of Sulphur Springs and five grandchildren, Michelle, Kristen and Lindsey Fenati and Justin and Jenni Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Ronald Kurt Johnson in 1979.
Pallbearers are Bobby Beck, Tracy Johnson, Keith Maddox, Jeff Johnson, James Johnson and Kent Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8560.
Military honors will also be presented by V.F.W. Post 8560.

Sallie Lomison
QUINLAN - Sallie Lee Lomison, 63, of Point died Thursday at her residence. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Irving. Rev. Lee Tillman will officiate.
She was the daughter of B.C. and Neta Thompson Scoggins.

Bertha Middleton
EMORY - Bertha Middleton, 94, of Quitman died Monday at Heritage Nursing Home in Quitman. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dougherty Baptist Church in Emory with Rev. William Potts officiating. Burial is in Dougherty Cemetery.
Born in Winnsboro on March 24, 1904, she was the daughter of W.L. Shipp and Sarah O. Newport. She married H.N. "Newt" Middleton in Rains County in December 1928. Mrs. Middleton was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She is survived by a daughter, Lillian Ramsey of Grand Prairie; a brother, John Shipp of Greenville; two sisters, Blanche Garrett of Alba and Myrtle Dittman of Emory; three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Her husband preceded her in death.

Lillian Orsborn

The daughter of Gus Orsborn and Nellie Williams, she was born in Rains County on July 2, 1909. She was a retired attorney, and she was of a Presbyterian.
She is survived by a sister, Marana Humphrey of Austin and nieces and nephews.

Lena Reynolds
HENDERSON - Lena Reynolds, 93, of Tulsa, Okla. died Sunday at Mayfair Nursing Home in Tulsa. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Providence Baptist Church at Crims Chapel with Rev. Steve Fulton officiating. Burial is in Crims Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Reynolds was born Aug. 2, 1905, at Horn Hill. She lived in Rusk County from 1959 to 1979 and was a member of Providence Baptist Church at Crims Chapel.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Valerie Reynolds of Greenville; daughters and son-in-law, Barbara Reynolds of Big Spring and Wanda and Gene Comer of Tulsa; sister, Doris Waggoner of San Angelo; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Reynolds, in 1979.

The son of Weldon and Cathy Goode Smith, he was born Nov. 27, 1975 in Dallas. He and Brandy Sharkey were married June 15, 1996 in Merit. He was a technician for Flores Technical Services. Mr. Smith was a member of Merit Baptist Church.

COMMERCE - Leonard Aubrey White, 82, of Commerce died Saturday at Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wesley McCasland officiating. Burial is in Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce.
Mr. White was born in Leonard on April 8, 1916, son of John Lee White and Nancy Jane Scisom White. He married Anna Ruth Ames on Dec. 20, 1941 in Greenville. He served in the Naval Air Force in World War II. Mr. White was a retired sheet metal foreman for Square D in Mesquite. He was a member of Congregational Methodist Church for 45 years in Commerce.
Surviving are his wife of Commerce; son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Donna K. White of Seagoville; grandchildren Jennifer Nicole White of Seagoville, and Leonard Stephen White and wife Mandy of Commerce; brother Lewis White of Fort Worth; sister, Ruby Hanna of Fort. Worth and several nieces, nephews.

Shirla Dawn Brooks, 30, of Floyd died Saturday in an automobile accident in Farmersville. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Prebyterian Church of Greenville. Burial is in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Caddo Mills.
Miss Brooks was born March 16, 1968, in Dallas; the daughter of Jimmy and Shirley Linker Brooks. She worked in the data entry division of Highway Masters.
She is survivied by her parents of Floyd; daughter, Candice Brooks of Floyd; brother, Michael Brooks of Merit; and sister, Teresa Brooks of Merit.
Pallbearers are her brother and cousins.

LEONARD- John Morrell Deal, 65, of Trenton died Saturday at 12 Oaks-Bayou City Hospital in Houston. Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Henry Suche officiating. Burial is in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Deel was born Feb. 9, 1933, in Leonard; the son of Ellis and Lillie Ramsey Deel. He married Susie Grounds on Sept. 8, 1961 in Dallas.
He was retired from Grocers Supply Company and was a member of Charleston Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of Trenton; mother of Leonard; daughters, Tina Moritz of Gunter and Teresa Dockery of Trenton; sons, Randy Deel of Bedford, Johnny Deel of Sulphur Springs and Charles Deel of Euless; sister, Geneva Holland of Baird; brothers, Billy Deel of Baird and Kennith Deel of Leonard; and 13 grandchildren.

M.E. Wolfe
DALLAS - M..E. "Babe" Wolfe, 77,. died Friday in Dallas. Services are at 2 p.m. today at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel with Rev. Ben Shinn officiating. Burial is in Laurel Land Memorial Park.
Mr. Wolfe was born May 30, 1921. He attended Sunset High School, Terrell Prepatory School and graduated from Texas A&M University.
He was a pilot in the U.S. Air Corps in World War Ii and the Korean Conflict. He was on the board of directors of the 12th Man Foundation at Texas A&M and endowed two scholarships at the university.
Mr. Wolfe was a member of Kessler Park United Methodist Church and Kavanaugh United Methodist Church in Greenville.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanette; daughter, Toni Walden; two grandchildren; and brother, Pete Wolfe. He was preceded in death by a son, Ben Wolfe, and a sister.
