Earnest Berry

LEONARD - Earnest E. Berry, 84, of Leonard, died Saturday at Community Medical Center in Sherman. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Leonard with Rev. Wally Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Pike Cemetery.

He was born September 24, 1914 in Lane, Texas to Gene Berry and Nannie Smith Berry. He married Frances Moores on April 8, 1945 in Texarkana.

Mr. Berry was a farmer and rancher, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Leonard, member and past commander of the American Legion Post in Leonard and a member of the Disabled American Veterans in Bonham. He also belonged to Masonic Lodge 490 in Blue Ridge.

He is survived by his wife, of Leonard; son Keith Kirkland, of Celeste; sister Lola Childress, of Celeste; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Bill Barnard, Edwin West, Denzle Cummings, Gene Kegans, Greg Harvey and Lloyd Flanagan. Honorary pallbearers will be J.H. McGee, Dewain Campbell, Jerry Tubbs, Milburn Anglin, V.L. McKinley and Raymond Harrison.

Visitation will will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home in Leonard, which is in charge of arrangements.

Sharon Evans

EMORY - Sharon Evans, 50, of Yantis, died Friday at Medical City Hospital in Dallas. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Emory Baptist Church with Rev. Rodney Williams, Rev. Harold Mills and Rev. Buddy Evans officiating. Burial will be in the Emory City Cemetery.

She was born February 23, 1948, to Billy Joe Hicks and Maxine Leach. She married Don Evans on April 7, 1973 in Plano. She was a Baptist and homemaker, and a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, of Yantis; mother, of Emory; son Donald Keith Evans, of Commerce; daughters Melanie Ren* Evans and Melissa Dawn Evans, of Yantis; and brothers Garry Hicks, of Ft. Worth, and Keith Hicks of Plano. She was preceded in death by her father November 14, 1996 and brother Ronald Joe Hicks on September 14, 1984.

Pallbearers will be Greg Huskey, Jimmy Huskey, Scottie Nichelson, Randal Nichelson, Gerald Burnett and Freddie Chamness. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Koerner, Gary Hicks, Keith Hicks, Bobby Hicks, D.K. Evans and Roger Mahagan.

Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home in Emory is in charge of arrangements.

Martha Howard

Martha S. Howard, 92, of Greenville, died Friday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bill McNatt officiating. Burial will be in East Mount Cemetery.

She was born in Cooper on October 15, 1906 to Sam Saye and Alice McCollum Saye. She married John W. Howard in Dallas on October 26, 1940. She was a retired executive secretary with the Selective Service and a long time member of Grace Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Greenville High School and received bachelor and masters degrees from Texas A&M University-Commerce. She was also a member of the American Association University Women.

Survivors include nephews Robert J. Darrah, of Dallas; Jerry Robertson, of Niceville, Fla.; Scotty Robertson, of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; Lee McCasland, of Dallas; and John McCasland, of Dallas; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1957, brother John Saye, and sisters Jessie Robertson and Irene Darrah.

Pallbearers will be Jim Stuth, Jearld Hicks, Bob Younger, Steven Gilley, Jack Ram and J. Harris Morgan.

Visitation will bee from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.

Elvan Lamb

COMMERCE - Elvan Leigh Lamb, 82, of Commerce, died at home on Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Fellowship Baptist Church in Campbell with Rev. Johnnie Henderson and Rev. David Huffham officiating. Burial will be in Rosemount Cemetery in Commerce.

He was born on November 9, 1916 to Lucious Leigh Lamb and Mrytle Ann McCanlies Lamb. He married Ethleen Walker on May 11, 1995 in Paris.

Mr. Lamb was one of the pioneer steam engineers, a position he held with Cotton Belt Railroad for 38 years. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge # 439, and he served in several positions in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and he was active in the boy scout movement. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Campbell.

Survivors include his wife, of Commerce; daughter and son-in-law Dinah Lamb and Barry McNew of Greenville; grandchildren Heather and Barry Seth McNew of Greenville; step-daughter and son-in-law Denise Porter and Marshall Myrick of Commerce; step-son Dennis Porter of Sulphur Springs; step-grandchildren Schelly Porter of Commerce, Megan Myrick of Austin, Meredith Myrick of Commerce; brothers Donald Lamb of Flint, Hale Lamb of St. Louis; sister Kathy Lamb Rittenhouse of Georgetown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Naomi Ruth Clay Lamb, and two sisters: Doris Lamb Hart and Margaret Jane Lamb Derden.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral home in Commerce, which is in charge of arrangements.

Agnes Matukas

Graveside services for Agnes Thomas Hesseltine Matukas of Greenville are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Memoryland Memorial Park. Rev. Eddie Smith will officiate.

She died Thursday at Briarcliff Nursing Home.

The daughter of Al Thomas and Minnie Hatch, she was born July 30, 1907 in Papalote. She married Herbert Cecil Hesseltine in 1927 in Woodsboro; he preceded her in death. She married Peter Paul Matukas on May 29, 1940 in Sinton; he also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Matukas was a homemaker and a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Joy Short Hesseltine of Greenville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and a niece, Annette McDonnel Woods of Sinton.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Lester Byron Hesseltine; an infant daughter, Lois Agnes Hesseltine; three brothers, Jack Thomas, Lester Thomas and Bruce Thomas; five sisters, Anna Belle Thomas McDonnel, Myrnie Thomas, Gladys Thomas Love, Buelah Thomas Gunn and Goldie Thomas.

Great-grandsons Jeffrey Hassell, David Hassell, Robby Hassell and Blake Hesseltine are pallbearers.

Visitation is at 103 Edgewood Drive in Greenville.

Billy Rogers

COMMERCE - Billy Dale Rogers, 33, of Campbell died Tuesday in Dallas after being involved in a car accident near Commerce. Funeral services are at Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday with David Gibson officiating. Burial is in Brigham Cemetery in Campbell.

He was born Oct. 31, 1965 in Dallas to Elmer Kenneth Rogers and Lillian Lou Childress. He had moved to Campbell from Sherman.

Mr. Rogers had attended the Grayson County Community College and was employed at Marshall Automotive in Commerce.

Surviving are his father of Shreveport, La.; his stepfather, Wayne Johnson of Farmersville; a daughter, Lindsay Rogers of Sherman; two sisters, Mary Marshall of Campbell and Brenda Shields of Caddo Mills and two brothers, Arthur William Rogers and Eric Lee Rogers.

His mother and grandparents preceded him in death.

Pallbearers are Ronnie Jefferson, Lonnie Rucker, Jackie Marshall, Junior Milsap, Anthony Lewis and Steve Shields.

Visitation is from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel.

Betty Trotter

Betty D. Trotter, 66, of Greenville died Wednesday at her residence. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Nichols and Rev. George Topper officiating. Burial is in Memoryland Memorial Park.

Born in White Rock on Oct. 18, 1932, she was the daughter of Roy "Bud" Green and Louise Holloway Green. She married Charles E. Trotter on Jan. 21, 1951 in Honey Grove.

Mrs. Trotter was a former sales clerk with J.C. Penney and was a retired bookkeeper with Nations Bank in Greenville. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and of the Alpha Class.

Surviving are her husband of Greenville; two sons, Roy Trotter of Plano and Guy Trotter of Caddo Mills; a daughter, Carrie Trotter Brazeal of Allen; a brother, Ted Green of Arlington; two sisters, Mary Hunter of Garland and Alice Kay Finney of Caddo Mills; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Pallbearers are Bill Fletcher, Hewitt Moseley, Weldon Mays, Art Jordan, Glenn Rucker and Verdane Nalls.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Wesley United Methodist Church.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Willie Crabtree

POINT - Willie Mae Crabtree, 87, of Point died Monday at Medical Center in Dallas. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. today at Point Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Combs and Rev. Billy Butler officiating. Burial is in Hooker Ridge Cemetery in Lone Oak.

The daughter of Andrew and Myrtle Wilklow Butler, she was born March 15, 1911 in Point. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are a son, Billy Fred Crabtree of San Antonio; two brothers, Arlen James Butler of Cash and Alford "Billy" Butler of Paris; two sisters, Veardeen Whatley of Longview and Neva White of Wills Point; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pearl B. Crabtree, on Feb. 13, 1951; a son, John Benton Crabtree on Sept. 25, 1996; a brother, Arvie Lee Butler on Aug. 6, 1997 and a sister, Delphia Samford on March 27, 1995.

Bayne Dittrich

Funeral services for Bayne Ellen Dittrich, 94, of Greenville are at 10 a.m. today at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ben Shinn officiating. A graveside service is at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton. Mrs. Dittrich died Tuesday at Greenville Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Born March 23, 1904 in Lavon, she was the daughter of William Marcus Patterson and Bessie Candus Boyd Patterson. She and Earnest C. Dittrich were married in 1939 in Greenville.

Mrs. Dittrich attended CIA, Southern Methodist University and graduated from East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce. She was a retired school teacher; having taught in Leonard and Oklaunion. During World War II, she worked in the War Bond Department in Washington, D.C.

While living in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Mrs. Dittrich was active in numerous school organizations and the Ladies Auxillary of the American Legion and St. Mark's Methodist Church. She was a member of Kavanaugh United Methodist Church in Greenville.

She is survived by a son, Carl Dittrich of Wallingford, Penn.; two sisters, Jan Crawford of Greenville and Mary Kay Wilson of Dallas; a brother, Boyd Patterson of Rockwall; two granddaughters, Danna Dittrich of Wallingford, Penn. and Denise Dittrich of Corvales, Ore.; six nephews and five nieces.

Mrs. Dittrich was preceded in death by her husband in August 1968; two sisters, Ona Hudson of Vernon and Maxine Pedersen of Greenville and two brothers, Paul Patterson and Ben Patterson, both of Floyd.

Erma Freeman

Erma Jean "Sweet" Freeman of Greenville Jan. 1 at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday at Rose of Sharon Church of God in Christ with Charles Craig officiating. Burial will be in Grundy Memorial Park.

The daughter of Warner and Elizabeth Pitts Blodware, she was born May 29, 1927 in Greenville. She married Willie Freeman in 1945 in Greenville. In 1962 she married Ruben Barnett in Denison.

Mrs. Freeman worked as a lab technician. She was a member of Rose of Sharon Church of God in Christ.

Surviving are a son, Willie Buster Freeman of Dallas; four daughters, Bonita Stiggers, Angela K. Richardson, and Jenise Lashwan Wilson of Greenville and Linda Jean Farkye of Salt Lake City, Utah; a brother, Lorenza Boldware; five sisters, Dorothy Pierce, Juanita Tidwell, Zora Lee Stanberry and Della Garrett of Greenville and Mary Roberson of Terrell; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation is from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Cozine & Tarver Funeral Home Chapel.

Billy Marcom

Billy Joe Marcom, 70, lifelong Greenville resident, died Dec. 30 at a Dallas hospital.

Born March 13, 1928 in Greenville, he was the son of Agnes and James Marcom.

Survivors include an aunt, Nell Sinclair; a niece and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James.

Williams Funeral Home of Garland is in charge of arrangements.
