Benjamin Smith

CAMPBELL, Calif. - Benjamin A. Smith, 20, of Campbell, Calif. died Friday. There was a memorial service Wednesday night at Campbell Memorial Chapel in California.

He was a graduate of Westmont High School in Campbell, Calif. and a student at West Valley Community College.

Surviving are his parents, Dr. Barton A. Smith, formerly of Greenville, and Vivianne Smith of Campbell, Calif.; a sister, Allison Emma Smith and a brother, Vincent Carlton Smith. He was the grandson of Emma Smith and the late Carlton D. Smith and the nephew of Scott and Lisa Aly of Greenville.

Memorials may be made to Boy Scout Troop 330, care of Dora Hyson, 1201 Harriet Street, Campbell, Calif. 95008.

Winnie Stephens

FORT WORTH - Winnie Lois Stephens, 87, of Fort Worth, former Greenville resident, died Monday. Funeral services are at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Drawing Room of Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Hudson officiating. Burial is in Rose Hill Memorial Park.

She was born Oct. 14, 1910 in Fannin County and graduated from Greenville High School.

She was vice president of Texas Refinery Co. from 1936 to 1967 and was a member of the board of Texas Refinery and its Canadian subsidiary. She was vice president of Central Security Life Insurance Co. from 1970 to 1977 and a Client Service Officer for U.S.P.A. & IRA, a brokerage, insurance and investment company from 1978 to 1984.

She was a member of Ridglea Baptist Church, D.M.M.A. of New York, was past vice president of Zonta Club, was a member of the board of Tarrant County Day Care Association and Fort Worth Executive Club and president of Fort Worth Direct Mail Club.

Surviving are a nephew, Ernest E. Stephens Jr.; great-nephew Ernest E. Stephens III, great-niece Tana Stephens Clark and great-great-nephews Garrett and Andrew Clark.

She was preceded in death by sisters Pauline Stephens Medford, Lou Stephens, and J. Cecile Stephens and brothers Charles Wesley Stephens and Ernest Emory Stephens Sr.

Pallbearers are Joe T. Cook Jr., Bob Finley, James F. Level Jr. and Ed McCormick.

Effie Stringer

COMMERCE - Effie Stringer, 82, of Klondike died Tuesday in Garland. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Pemberton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike House officiating. Burial is in Rosemound Cemetery, Commerce.

The daughter of Oscar P. Pilgrim and Hattie Elizabeth Askew, she was born May 22, 1916 in Delta County. She married Wesley Stringer on Dec. 12, 1936 in Commerce.

A lifetime resident of the Commerce-Klondike area, Mrs. Stringer was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce and she was a member of the Triple L Sunday School class. She was a former employee of Wal-Mart.

She is survived by her husband of Klondike; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and John Sands of Commerce and Carolyn and Bob Nickell of Horseshoe Bay; a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Joan Stringer of Commerce; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and one nephew.

Preceding her in death were five brothers and one sister.

Denver Walker, Benny Herman, Jim Ainsworth, Norman Messick, Sam Whitley and John Moore will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Jerod Stringer, Eric Stringer, Cory Langley, Hank Whitley, Alex Janes and Johnny Shamburger.

Ernest Taylor

Ernest T. Taylor of Greenville died Friday in a Dallas hospital. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. today at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Samuel F. Evans officiating. Burial is in East Mount Cemetery.

Born in Pledger on Aug. 17, 1925, he was the son of Booker T. and Beatrice McBride Taylor. He and Dorothy Woodson were married May 31, 1952 in Greenville. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Taylor was employed at Raytheon Inc. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, W.M. Bee Hive Lodge 105 F&AM, District Deputy Grand Master for District 2, 33 Degree Mason, North Star Consistory No. 245, and AASRPHA.

Surviving are his wife of Greenville; two sons, Ernest Taylor Jr. of Dallas and Bradley Scott Taylor of Greenville; a daughter, Wanda L. Taylor of Dallas and two grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

Pallbearers are Johnny Courns, Bennie Barrett, Noble Gilstrap, Travis Washington, Ralph Goss and Bruce Dennis. Serving as honorary pallbearers are deacons of New Hope Baptist Church and members of Bee Hive Lodge.

Cozine & Tarver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jimmie Barker

EMORY - Jimmie Barker, 61, of Rye died Friday at Medical College in Augusta, Ga. There is a graveside service at 1 p.m. Thursday at Creagleville Cemetery in Grand Saline with Rev. Charles Ray Smith officiating.

The son of Luther and Lorene Mays Barker, he was born Feb. 18, 1937 in McKinney. He married Laverne Houck on April 20, 1962 in Dallas.

Mr. Barker worked in sales. He was a Baptist.

Surviving are his wife of Rye; his parents of Emory; a son, Sidney Barker of Sulphur Springs; a daughter, Levonda Warren of Point; a brother, Steven Barker of Arlington; three sisters, Voncille Watson and Judy Fagg of Grand Saline and Linda Green of New Caney and four grandchildren.

Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home of Emory is in charge of arrangements.

Willie Crabtree

POINT - Willie Mae Crabtree, 87, of Point died Monday at Medical Center in Dallas. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at Point Funeral Home Chapel. Burial is in Hooker Ridge Cemetery in Lone Oak.

The daughter of Andrew and Myrtle Wilklow Butler, she was born March 15, 1911 in Point. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are a son, Billy Fred Crabtree of San Antonio; two brothers, Arlen James Butler of Cash and Alford "Billy" Butler of Paris; a sister, Veardeen Whatley of Longview; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pearl B. Crabtree, on Feb. 13, 1951; a son, John Benton Crabtree on Sept. 25, 1996; a brother, Arvie Lee Butler on Aug. 6, 1997 and a sister, Delphia Samford on March 27, 1995.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lewis Fett

POINT - Lewis Fett of Point died at his home Monday. There is a private memorial service today; his body is being donated to medical science.

He was born Dec. 27, 1945 in Chicago, Ill. Mr. Fett worked as a carpenter most of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Fett, of Point; his mother, Lucille Fett of Point; a son, Joseph Fett of Livonia, Mich.; a daughter, Marilyn Sprague of San Antonio; two brothers and one granddaughter.

Artie Latham

COMMERCE - Artie B. Latham, 91, of Cumby, died Monday at Oak Manor Nursing Home in Commerce. There is a graveside service at 10 a.m. Friday at Hawley Cemetery in Bay City.

Born Nov. 25, 1907 in Hopkins County, she was the daughter of Fess L. Wright and Sarah Bowen. She was a homemaker and was a member of First Baptist Church in Cumby. She married Cecil H. Latham.

Surviving are daughters Charlene Latham Strickland of Cumby and Claudia Faye Latham Winters of Boyd; a son, W.H. "Doc" Latham of Lake Charles, La.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband and a grandson preceded her in death.

Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home of Commerce is in charge of arrangements.

Eloy Saiz

ROCKWALL - Eloy T. Saiz, 75, of Royse City died Monday. Funeral services are at 1 p.m. today at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Rockwall with Rev. William Richard officiating. Burial is in Rest Haven Memorial Park.

He was born April 30, 1923 and had been a resident of Royse City for four and a half years. He married his wife, Clarisse, on June 29, 1947 in Oklahoma City, Okla. He served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Saiz was a planner in the Civil Service for 30 years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Rockwall, the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Forresters.

Surviving are his wife of Royse City; a daughter, Rita Leatherwood of Rockwall; a son, Dennis Saiz of Royse City; five grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 1305 Damascus Road, Rockwall, 75087 or to the American Heart Association, 1615 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, 75207-8808.

Rest Haven Funeral Homes-Cemetery, Rockwall Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Carl Smith

ROYSE CITY - Carl Wayne Smith, 57, of Royse City died Sunday. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Royse City with Rev. Laurence Cox and Rev. George McCain officiating. Burial is in Royse City Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born July 29, 1941, in Gram Point; the son of Herman Samuel (Lefty) and Lois Hurst Smith. He was employed by Skaggs Albertson.

Surviving are his mother of Royse City; son, Timothy Smith of Royse City; daughter, Rhonda Lovell of Royse City; brother, Grady Smith of Garland; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Floyd Smith.

Pallbearers are Amos Kohn, Ferris Tate, Gary Smith, Billy Williams, Jack Bostick and Clyde Bostick.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Rentfrow Funeral Home Royse City Chapel.

Marietta Crelia

LEONARD - Marietta Crelia, 94, of Leonard died Monday in the Northeast Medical Center in Bonham. Funeral services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Leonard with Rev. Chris Cowen officiating. Burial is in Leonard Cemetery.

Miss Crelia was born Sept. 6, 1904, in Albany, Okla.; the daughter of William Marion and Mary Wright Crelia. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Leonard.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Visitation is from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Taylor Funeral Home of Leonard is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Lou Curtis

PLANO - Mary Lou Curtis, 66, a resident of Plano died Dec. 12. Services were Dec. 15 at Ted Dickey Funeral Home and burial was in Plano Mutual Cemetery.

Born in 1932 in Greenville, she was the daughter of Edgar and Pearl Hoff. She married Guy Curtis in September 1949. Mrs. Curtis was employed by Safeway for 19 years and was a member of Disciples of Christ Church.

She is survived by her husband; daughter, Sallie Crawley of Murphy; a son, David Curtis of Coppell; three grandchildren and brothers and sisters J.C. Hoff, Betty Caufman, Norman Hoff, Bobby Hoff, Martha Dickens and Billy Hoff.

Barney Henson

DALLAS - Barney Samuel "Sam" Henson died Sunday in Dallas. Funeral services are at noon today at Restland Memorial Chapel with pastors William J. Carl III and Tim Schone officiating. Burial is in Restland Memorial Park.

Mr. Henson was born April 21, 1916 in Emory. Mr. Henson graduated from Royse City High School, received a bachelor of arts degree from East Texas State Teacher's College and did graduate work at Southern Methodist University.

He retired as director of field operations for the IRS, Dallas Division. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Dallas.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Lillian Jahnes Henson of Bryan; nephew William Hugh Henson Jr. and wife, Judy, of Kennedale; six great-nephews and nieces; 12 great-great-nephews and nieces and cousins.

Memorials may be made to Presbyterian Children's Home, Route One, Box 27, Itasca, 76055.

Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Restland Funeral Home.

Lonnie Scarborough Jr.

Funeral services for Lonnie Thomas Scarborough Jr. of Greenville are at 2 p.m. today at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Stubblefield and Rev. Steve Price officiating. Burial is in Memoryland Memorial Park.

He died Sunday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville.

The son of Lonnie Thomas Scarborough Sr. and Vella Stephenson, he was born in Sulphur Springs on Sept. 5, 1945. He and Ruby Nell Jennings were married March 10, 1972 in Sulphur Springs.

Mr. Scarborough served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed at Raytheon and was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Michael Scarborough of Greenville; two daughters, Melissa Goldsmith of Emory and Michele Bryer of Rowlett; a brother, Marlin Scarborough of Yantis; a sister, Bonita Petty of Sulphur Springs and grandchildren Jessica, Mark, Carlton and Rylie.

His parents preceded him in death.

Serving as pallbearers are Kenneth Wright, Joe Thurman, Robert Chapman, Jerry Anderson, Peter Page, Ray Long and Jim Woelfle. Marv Flowers is honorary pallbearer.

Annie White

Annie Pearl White of Greenville died Sunday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Funeral services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Peters Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sidney Stone officiating. Burial is in East Mount Cemetery.

Born on Nov. 18, 1911 in Greenville, she was the daughter of Marion Austin Pugh and Mary E. Parker Pugh. She married Andrew Spencer White on July 31, 1931 in Greenville.

Mrs. White worked as a telephone operator with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., retiring after 36 years' service. She was a Baptist and she was a member of Southwestern Bell Pioneer.

Surviving are three sons, Charles Austin White of Forsyth, Mo., Jerry L. White of Atlanta, Ga. and Robert Spencer White of Greenville; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 8, 1944; one brother, Barney Pugh and two sisters, Beulah McClure and Connie Bedwell.

Grandsons Mike White, Bobby White, Tyronne White, Robin White, Kelly White, Kyle Smith and Shelby Smith are pallbearers. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Sonny Bridges, Jesse Wayne Bost, Avon Chandler, V.R. Webb, Raymond Turner, Dick Power and Charles Smith.

Visitation is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
