He served in the Navy on the USS San Francisco during WWII. He obtained both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Geology from the University of Michigan and had a distinguished career as a bilingual Consulting Geologist. He was a member of numerous professional societies and organizations. He jogged over 12,000 miles after the age of 40. His son Christopher and grandson Dion Thomas Donegan predeceased Thomas Beard. He is survived by his sister, Susan Ponticelli of Maitland, Florida, and his children Ellen Sokoloff of Santa Fe, NM, Judith Beard of Albuquerque, NM, Mary Lynn Miners of Tucson, AZ, Jennifer Beard of Tucson, AZ, and Daniel Beard of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and his grandchildren: Marley, Ethan, Byrony, Jay, Ashleigh, Brian, Christine, Meghan, Cayce, Kate, Nadia, Dillon, and Lucrezia. Private memorial services were held in Santa Fe on January 19, 2003.
Fred William Cave, 95, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2003. Mr. Cave was a resident of El Paso since 1945. He was a member of Coronado Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Cave was a diesel locomotive supervisor for Baldwin, Lima, Hamilton Company in Philadelphia, PA. Mr. Cave is preceded in death by his son Fred Lester Cave. He is survived by his beloved wife Gertrude E. Cave, son Robert Cave, grandchildren Tamara Carpenter, Robert L. Cave, John C. Cave, Carla Dearing, and Casie Zimmerman. LTC (Ret) Russell B. Denham, US Army, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2003. He was born in Wilmot, Arkansas on March 8, 1917, the only child of Horace and Bonny Denham. His military career spanned 34 years and began in Robinson Arkansas as an enlisted man. He rapidly attained the rank of Sergeant while stationed in Bristol England during World War II, and received a direct commission to Lt. During the Korean War, he served on the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission as part of the Panjumon Peace Talks of 1953-54, and was present at the repatriation of the Prisoners of War. In 1958, he was commended for exemplary performance of duty, and advanced to the rank of Lt. Colonel. During his military service, LTC Denham was on the General's Staff, as Adjutant General, and earned numerous awards, including the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Medaille de la Reconnaissance Francais, and the EAME Ribbon. His final assignment was G-1 of the US Army Training Center at Fort Bliss. He taught Special Education in the EPISD, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Holy Spirit Episcopal Church. He was an original founder of the Sun Country Camera Club and a past President of the National Association of Uniformed Services. He chaired the General Assistance Board for El Paso County. He was an active Democrat, serving on the Credentials Committee, and as Precinct Chairman. In 1985, he was inducted to the Democrat Hall of Fame. He was also an avid sports enthusiast and was actively involved in football, and tennis tournaments throughout his life. In 1992, he was the Texas Senior Olympic Champion Sprinter. Left to mourn his passing are: wife, Shirleen and 6 daughters, Caroline Denham, and Peter Rolfe of Portland, Maine; Joy Denham of Concord, Massachusetts; Lisa Denham and husband Pablo Morales of Santiago, Chile; Deborah and husband John Bockelman of Houston, Texas; Cynthia Morgan of St. Robert, Missouri; Candace and husband Steve Reece of Dixon, Missouri; and 8 grandchildren Bonny Joy Sullivan; Thomas Russell Morales Denham; Kyle and Nicholas Bockelman; Geoffrey Morgan; Kaela Snelson; Eric and Alex Reece, and 3 great-grandchildren, Heaven, Christopher and Jacob Morgan. Visitation will be at Kaster-Maxon & Futrell Funeral Home, 8817 Dyer St. on Monday, February 3rd from 5:30-9:00 p.m. Burial with full military honors at the graveside will be on Tuesday, February 4th at 10:00 a.m. at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
Elizabeth Ann Ferlet Lane, of El Paso died Thursday, January 30 surrounded by those she loved and who loved her. Born in El Paso on January 10, 1932 to Hildegarde (Howell) and L.D. Ferlet, she grew up on the family's cotton farm in Anthony, Texas. She graduated from El Paso High School and attended Texas Western University (UTEP) and New Mexico State University where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. On December 12, 1953 she married Robert Wendell Lane at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Canutillo, Texas and they enjoyed 49 years of mutual devotion. Her parents, Hildegarde and L.D. Ferlet, an infant daughter, and her niece Diana McBride, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) Lane; her children, Robert (Bobby) Lane and wife Lou Ann, Robin Green and husband Rich, Oleta (Leta) Lane and husband Don Bentz, Jo Nell Hansen and husband Derrick; her grandchildren, Trey, Ashley, and Briana Lane, Elizabeth Ann Hansen, and Grace Elizabeth Green, her sister and brother in law, Robin and George McBride; and her nieces, Bonnie Birkelbach and Katie McBride. A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 2, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home, 5054 Doniphan Drive. Robert Cecil Lane, Jr., aged 60, passed away January 30, 2003. Born in Waco, Texas in 1942, Mr. Lane graduated from Baylor University and earned an advance degree at SMU. He moved to El Paso with his family in 1972 and was employed by El Paso Natural Gas Company for 15 years and was a CPA. He was a member of Trinity First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Lane, sons Robert Lane of Houston and wife Lisa, Jeffrey Lane of El Paso, and daughter Jennifer Mena of El Paso and husband Aldo. Also left is his sister, Lynda Wigal of Tennessee, and three grandchildren, Alan Nicholas Mena, Hannah Belle Lane and Noah Robert Lane. Mrs. Ofelia Jaquez Morales, 80, passed away at home peacefully with her family on 1/29/03. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Oscar Morales Sr. A 1942 Bowie High School graduate and a life long resident of El Paso. She honored her country as a Red Cross aid in WWII, Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader. She served God as a parishioner, Eucharistic minister, teacher, coordinator of the CCD, and member of the Rosary Altar Society at Our Lady of the Valley, as well as coordinator and member of Open Arms Prayer Community. Humberto "Jerry" Pena, Sr., born in El Paso on August 7, 1918, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 30, 2003, following a courageous battle against cancer. Upon learning of his illness in the summer of 2002, he implored his family not to make a fuss over him. His attitude was coined in his repeated assertion that "It's not how you die that matters; it's how you have lived your life." He was 84 years old. Mr. Pena was a well-respected and highly knowledgeable member of the automotive community in the El Paso area. He was noted for his excellent craftsmanship and skill as a restorer of antique automobiles and was sought out for his expertise. His passion for working on automobiles spanned seven decades. Following an Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy, he became associated briefly with Bradley Roe and the American National Life Insurance Company. He later became a partner with Lawrence Deal of Deal Motor Company, where he formed Deal's Automotive Service, which he owned and managed for over 15 years. He then became an associate with Maury Kemp Enterprises, where he managed the Body Shop. Retiring from Kemp Motor Company, he became owner of Sierra Auto Parts. Later, he and his son, Jerry, Jr. owned and operated Jerry Pena's Customcraft Body and Paint and Rio Grande Auto Parts. With his wife, he was co-owner and developer of Placita Santa Fe. A man of noble character, extraordinarily strong work ethics and a generous nature, he supported many local charities, quietly and without fanfare. He was sensitive to the needs of others, without having to be asked. He prided himself in everything he did and he taught by example. Providing for his family was the strongest motivation in his life. He had a profound effect on those who knew him, most importantly, his children and grandchildren. A strict disciplinarian, he combined a great measure of love with a great deal of guidance. His influence will be felt in perpetuity. His love of classical music, original art and good books further defined him as a man of diverse interests. A loving father, grandfather and husband, he will be deeply missed by his wife, Gloria Gillis Pena, his children; Patrick and Dottie McCarthy, Alto, NM; Margaret Randle of El Paso; Nellene and Jerry Pena, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ. and Suzi and John Pena, Scottsdale, AZ., and his stepsons, Richard Gillis of Houston, TX and Ronald Gillis of San Diego, CA. Also, Tory Gillis and Aric Gillis of Phoenix, AZ. He has nine great-grandchildren, including PFC Matthew "Doc" Randle of Fort Bliss, TX. He is also survived by his brother, Joe (Joyce) Pena, La Quinta, CA, and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Pena of El Paso. He has numerous nieces and nephews including, in El Paso, Ron Pena and David Pena, William Mulligan and Edward Mulligan, who was his best friend. Mr. Pena was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Amparo Pena, to whom he was very devoted; his brother, Hector Pena and his stepson, Robert Perez. Under the direction of Harding, Orr and McDaniel, 320 Montana, visitation for Mr. Pena will be Sunday, 4 PM to 9 PM. Rebekah Y. Bishop, 45, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2004. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso and a member of the Word of Life Church. She is preceded in death by her parents Jack Smith and Tommie Schutte. She is survived by her husband Andy and her son Clint. Additional survivors include her brother Steven, her sisters Linda and Jennifer. Rebekah was truly a survivor of breast cancer since 1998. Her vibrant self will, determination and faith for life is what carried her through her battle with cancer for the last 6 years. Donald Frederick McCarthy, Jr., loving husband, father and grandfather passed away Monday, February 9, 2004, in El Paso. Don was born August 18, 1938, in Lynn, Massachusetts. He was drafted in 1961 and served 26 years in the US Army serving in Germany, Vietnam, Korea, Okinawa and across the United States retiring as a Master Sergeant (E8) in 1988 at Ft. Bliss. He went on to attend UTEP, earning a degree in early childhood development in 1994 and began a second fulfilling career. Don taught second and third grade at Eastwood Heights Elementary School from 1994 through 2003. He was a lifelong Catholic and a member of the St. Michael's community at Ft. Bliss for the 18 years he lived in El Paso. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald F. McCarthy, Sr. and Phyllis McCarthy and son, Patrick Donald McCarthy. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine S. McCarthy and children Nancy Zenk (Eric) of Ft. Patricia "Tita" Fernandez Sterling Pence, born in El Paso March 17, 1939. She is survived by her husband Enoch Pence, her children Patricia Rockoff and Mick Lynch, Grover Sterling Jr. and wife Diane Simone, Jean Marie and Robert Alpert. Her four grandchildren, Sarah Rockoff, Michael Lynch, Sterling and Hanah Alpert. Siblings Tomas and Judie Fernandez, Elisa and Neal Shapiro, Ana and Dan Blunk, Emilia and Stan Czaplicka, and many nieces and nephews. Her parents Tomas and Patricia Fernandez Campos predeceased her. Tita was always active in the arts and other activities. When her daughters were young, she was very active in Girl Scouts. She was co-chairman with Mary Alice Prendergast in the yearly American Cancer Drive. While her children were attending Crockett, she and Nell Carvajal started Helping Hands with the El Paso Police Department. This was to signal a safe home for children to enter when in trouble. She was also assistant director of the Art Association. Along with Rosanne Orndorf she started Art in the Park. Rosie and Tita also co-chaired the 16th annual Sun Carnival exhibit, and started the art exhibit in the hallways of the International Airport. She has been a member Las Artistas for more than 25 years. Tita was recognized as one of the outstanding woman of America. She worked 10 years along with her partner Sue Mengel in real estate and were always top producers. Because of her illness she retired and became very interested in Transplant Recipients International Organization. She was instrumental in getting TRIO's charter in El Paso. She co-chaired Circle of Love and created great awareness towards Organ donations. In her last years she participated in juried art shows and she loved doing her "things". Memorial service will be held Thursday February 12, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Clements Episcopal Church, Rev. Bill Francis officiating. MARIA MAGDALENA ALVAREZ, 66, Loving mother and grandmother, passed away on Monday, February 14, 2005. She was a longtime resident of El Paso and an administrative assistant for San Juan Bautista Catholic Church. She was a devout Catholic and active participant in church functions. Martha L. Amis, 80, a resident of El Paso since 1953 passed away February 11, 2005. She retired from Andress High School as a Registrar after 18 years. She enjoyed a variety of music, was a avid reader and a supportive Air Force wife to her husband James whom preceded her in death in 1990. Mrs. Amis is also preceded by her sister, Doris Williams. Survived by her son, James B. Stewart (Sally) of Semi Valley California, daughters Jan Dimmitt (Colin) of Lancaster, California and Dotty Caldwell (David) of El Paso, Texas; Grandchildren Jacob and Larissa Dimmitt, Mia Caldwell and Susan and Debbie Stewart. JOSEPH C. BOGGS, 81, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2005 after a short illness. Joe was born November 27, 1923 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania to Harry and Vella Boggs. He is preceded in death by his wife WillaJean and his son David. He is survived by his loving companion Barbara Rees, his son Jim and wife Gayle, daughter Barbara and husband David Judkins. Grandchildren Seth and Sarah James and Cody Judkins, niece Susan Boggs and nephew Jay Boggs and his family. Joe grew up in Beaver Falls, PA, served in the Army Air Corp in World War II, graduated from Geneva College and earned his Masters Degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduation he went to work for Sears, Roebuck and Co. which transferred him to El Paso in 1969. He retired from Sears in 1974 and opened Casa Hardware. In 1981 he became a real estate appraiser and was active as an appraiser until his passing. Joe will be greatly missed by his family, friends, the Sears group and the McDonalds guys. A memorial service will be held Thursday, February 17, 2005 at 4:30 p.m. at University Presbyterian Church, 244 N Resler, with Reverend Jeff Mitchiner officiating. EDWIN J. BURNS, 73, went to be with the Lord on February 14, 2005. Ed was born on October 10, 1931 in Deming, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Phyllis Burns, and brothers Johnny George and Bill Burns. He is survived by his wife Suzanna Mayfield Burns, son Scott Burns and wife Norma and their children Janelle, Cody, Kevin, and Kelsey; brother Bob Burns and his wife Melody; stepdaughter Lori Kukulinski and husband Victor and their children Taylor, Alyssa, and Kaitlyn; mother-in-law Bille Sue Roth and husband Bud; sister-in-law Margery Mayfield Dickson and husband Jim; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Ed was a Korean War Veteran and a member and past president of the El Paso County Sheriff's Posse. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, February 18, 2005 at 9:00 A.M. at Martin Funeral Home West 128 North Resler Drive, followed by a Graveside Service at 11:00 A.M. at Ft. James Matthew Celaya, 26, was born in El Paso, Texas on November 16, 1978. James was a loving, warm and charismatic soul. He will always be remembered for his zest for life, keen sense of humor, and compassion for others. He was a graduate of Andress High School and served his country in the Air Force for 4 years. He was a law student at NMSU and recipient of the Budweiser and Coca Cola Hispanic Scholarship. He was a permanent substitute teacher for the EPISD. James is survived by his mother Rosie Celaya Raulston and stepfather Rod; father Amado "Judge" Celaya and stepmother Lupe; brother Chris and sister-in-law Linda; nephews and nieces Brian, Marisa, Jessica, and Andy; stepbrothers/sisters Randy Raulston, Sandy Smith, Michelle Sutherland, Roberto Velez, Yahdira Lorea, Manuel Velez, Gabriel Velez; Godparents Gilbert & Paulina Ramirez and Godfather Rudy Guerra; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and many beloved friends living here in El Paso and all over the country. Rodney Herbert Dowden, Sr., 89, entered into the hands of the Lord on February 14, 2005. He was born in Kisatchie, LA on September 18, 1915 to Thomas and Floy Dowden. Herbert was a retired foreman from the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was a member of the 48th Seabee and Westside Church of Christ. He is preceded in death by his son Willie Dowden. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Katherine Marie Dowden, son, Rodney Herbert Dowden Jr. and his wife Sandy, daughter, Anita Toma and her husband Ray. He is also survived by his 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and daughter-in-law, Renee Dowden. A funeral service will be held at 11 am, Thursday, February 17, 2005 at Westside Church of Christ with Pastor Howard Bryan officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Phyllis Gowell McFadden died Saturday, February 12. She was 84 years old. She is survived by her four children: William Reed McFadden of Austin; Polly L. McFadden of El Paso; Dr. Robert S. McFadden of San Antonio; and Ann M. Larkin of Flower Mound, TX. She also has five grandchildren: Janet Marilee McFadden of Port Aransas, TX; Jennifer Reed Larkin and Emilee Ann Larkin of Flower Mound; William Gordon McFadden and Elizabeth McFadden Craig of Oklahoma City, OK. Phyllis had a long career as a Registered Nurse, beginning her career as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army's 112th Evacuation Hospital near the front during World War II. Phyllis married David Barnett McFadden in 1946 and the couple lived in Texas throughout David's career as an engineer and entrepreneur. After raising four children, Phyllis returned to nursing, working another 20 years in the neo-natal intensive care unit of various hospitals. Phyllis moved to El Paso in 1994 and was a member of Coronado Baptist Church. She had many hobbies including sewing, knitting, miniatures, hooking rugs and all the needle arts. She was an avid walker and won first place in her age category in the El Paso Race for the cure 5K from 1993 to 1996. CARMEN SALAZAR, 93, passed away Monday February 14, 2005 in a local hospital. She was a resident of El Paso and a long time member of The Pan American Pilot Club.
