Ann Walker McCollum
Funeral services for Ann Walker McCollum, age 54 of Bedias were held May 21, 2004 at the Madisonville Funeral Home. Rev. Jack Bailey of the Point Blank Community Church officiated. Burial was in Park Cemetery.
Mrs. McCollum was born on April 24, 1950 in Lufkin to Edward and Althea (Morgan) Walker and died on May 18 at home. She lived in Bedias for 14 years having come from Onalaska. She worked for Darrell Hall Land Development in accounts receivable. McCollum accepted Christ at the early age of nine and rededicated her life through baptism during the summer of 1984 at Soda Baptist Church in Polk County. She raised horses and loved to do arts and crafts and gardening. She was preceded in death by her father and sister, Mary Walker. She died after a lengthy and difficult battle with cancer.
McCollum is survived by husband, Benny "Butch" McCollum of Bedias; mother, Althea Taylor and husband, Ralph of Indian Springs; sons, Larry A. McCollum and wife Joann of Channelview, Denny McCollum and wife D'Anna of Channelview and Robert Byrd of Michigan; daughters, Lisa L. McCollum of Channelview, Vicky Dorsey and husband, Kevin of Tyler, Deana Byrd of Warren, Ohio, and Brandi Adams of Bedias; the children's father, Bobby Byrd; brothers, James Walker of Livingston, and Jerry Walker of Indian Springs; step-brothers, Wayne Taylor, Keith Taylor and Kenneth Taylor; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Kody Slusser, Drew Dorsey, Ray Taylor, Mike Campbell, Jeff Jones and Bill Davis. Honorary pallbearers were Bethany Dorsey and Prissy Slusser.

James K. Marquess
Memorial services for James K. Marquess 57, of Iola, are set for 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2004, at the Madisonville Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Dean Ferguson will officiate.
Mr. Marquess was born on March 27, 1947 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky to James and Wanda (Cox) Marquess and died on Monday, May 24, 2004 at his home. He and his wife, Nancy have been residents of Iola since 1990 having moved from Houston. Mr. Marquess was a rancher and a member of the Red Poll Association and of the N.R.A.
Marquess is survived by his wife, Nancy of Iola; mother, Wanda Byrd of Texas City, TX; son, David B. Mendel of Houston, TX; daughter, Carey F. Boch of Mandelville, LA; daughter-in-law, Marlo Mendel of Uvalde, TX; half brother, Michael Marquess of Hopkinsville, KY; sisters, Ina Jo Cashiola of Humble, TX, Dittie Bowers of Houston, TX and Sandy Hendley of Houston, TX; half sister, Patty Boren of Hopkinsville, KY, nine grandchildren, two nephews B.J. Hendley and Michael Cashiola and one niece Rachel Bowers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Johnnie Marie Dean
Funeral services for Johnnie Marie Dean, 87, of Midway were held May 18, 2004 at the Midway Church of Christ. Rev. Ralph Carter officiated. Burial followed at Midway City Cemetery.
Miss Dean was born December 26, 1916 in Guy Store in Leon County to John and Elizabeth (Thomason) Rogers. She died May 15 at her home. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Dean was an elementary school teacher for many years in Madisonville and through her teaching she touched many lives.
Survivors include Kittrel and Marcia Goree of Midway, and other relatives and friends.

Louise Conrad
Funeral services for Louise Conrad, 88, of North Zulch were held May 19, 2004 at the Willowhole Chapel. Rev. Paul Dickson officiated. Burial followed at the Willowhole Cemetery.
Conrad was born January 27, 1916 in North Zulch to Gus and Lillie (Valenta) Utecht. She died May 17 at her home. She was a member of First Baptist Church in North Zulch. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clive Johnston, Ervin Conrad, and a stepson, Dean Johnston.
She is survived by her stepson and daughter-in-law, E.W. and June Conrad; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Rex Beasley; a brother, Bill Utecht, several grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Billy H. Evans
Billy H. Evans, 73, of North Zulch died March 20, 2004 at St. Joseph Rehab Center. Funeral services were held March 23 at First Pentecostal Church in Normangee. Bro. Sam Manning and Bro. Dennis Maddox officiated. Burial followed at Wealthy Cemetery in Normangee.
Evans was born Nov. 6, 1930 in North Zulch and lived his whole life there. He worked at Calvert United Pentecostal Church.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Biddle Evans of North Zulch; six sons, Dale and Joyce Evans of Iola, Donnie and Jolene Evans of Bryan, Gary A. Evans of Madisonville, David and Dawn Evans of North Zulch, Jimmy P. Evans of North Zulch, and George and Lisa Evans of North Zulch; one sister, Alene King of Centerville; one brother-in-law, Charles Wilson of Madisonville; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the North Zulch Volunteer Fire Department of Kings Table Apostolic Church in Iola.

Lugene Spurlock
Funeral services for Lugene Spurlock of Madisonville were held Feb. 10, 2004 at Shiloh Baptist Church. Rev. Harold Franklin officiated. Burial was at Southside Cemetery in Midway.
Spurlock was born June 6, 1920 to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Spurlock. He attended Madisonville Schools and was a member of Sweet Zion Baptist Church. He was ordained Deacon of Sweet Zion among many other officers of the church. He was employed by the Madisonville Independent School District until he retired at age 65.
In 1943 he united in marriage with Minnie Ola Leonard, to this union eight children were born: Minnie Spurlock, Joe Spurlock, Robert Spurlock, Rev. Lugene Spurlock Jr., Mary Jordan, Johnnie Nellums, Jimmy Spurlock, and Blanche Spurlock, one sister; Ora Dell; and one granddaughter, DeKeithsa Shenell Nixon.
In 1971 he united in marriage with Ruby Mae Goffney, to this union added nine children. Nettie Bailey, Ruby White, Ovie Goffney, Dorothy Walker, Catherine McCollough, Edna Goffney, Annette Goffney-Sterling and a special son Jimmy Jackson.
His wife, Ruby Mae Spurlock; 45 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a special great-nephew, Willie Randall; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives survive him.
Pallbearers were Craigus Goffney, Johnny Lotts, Dedrick Lotts, Paul Bailey, Cornelius Walker, and Darrell Mithchell.
Honorary pallbearers were Robert Spurlock, Marco Spurlock, Fletcher Nixon, Ocie Goffney, Edward Pharr, Randy Johnson, Rev. Lugene Spurlock Jr., Christohper Sandles, Tilvert Anderson, Jimmy Jackson, and Jimmy Walker.

Matthew Rice
Matthew Wayne Rice, 30, of Iola died Feb. 16, 2004 at Madison St. Joseph Health Center. Funeral services were held Feb.19 at Freewill Baptist Church in Cross. Dr. Carl Lenz officiated. Burial was in Cross Cemetery.
Rice was born Dec. 4, 1973 in Bryan to David (James) and Barbara Lewis Rice. He was a Baptist. He loved country music, football, and game shows.
Survivors include his parents James and Barbara Rice of Iola; sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy and James Henry of Carlos, and Carolin and David Stone of Bryan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Randy and Shirley Rice if Bryan and Brian and Sharon Rice of Indiana; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Johnnie Ray Burts Parker
Johnnie Ray Burts Parker, 83, of Tomball died Jan. 13, 2004 in Tomball. Funeral services were held Jan. 17 at First Baptist Church in Tomball with Rev. Dick Lintelman. Graveside service and committal was held in Klein Memorial Park in Tomball.
Parker was born May 14, 1920 in North Zulch to Johnny and Pearl Andrews Burts. She was a registered nurse, serving in the Tomball School District for many years. She was also a nurse in the United States Army during World War II, achieving the rank of Captain and serving in a M.A.S.H. unit under the command of General George Patton, in Northern France and the Rhineland.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Ethel Hibbetts.
Parker is survived by her husband of 56 years, Adolphas Parker; one daughter, Rae Nell Thompson; one son, Adolphas Harley Parker, Jr. and his wife, Tina; four grandsons, Rickey Ray Thompson, Jr., Eric Scott Thompson and wife Mandy; Keith Alan Thompson and wife, Erin, Bobby Harley Parker and Kody Carson Parker; and five great-grandchildren, Alyssa Riley Thompson, Talley Ann Thompson, Molli Raye Thompson, Denver Scott Thompson, and Johnnie Madison Thompson.

Mary Gladys Batson
Mary Gladys Batons, 85, of Madisonville died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 at the Madison St. Joseph Health Center. She was born in Marquez May 7, 1918 to Martha Lou (Bice) and Ira Logan Baugh.
She loved her two sons and church. During her life she was very active in the Garden Oaks Church of Christ in Houston, acting as a Sunday school teacher. She also was president of the PTA at her son's school and a homeroom mother. She was very proud to have done such diligent work as the Editor of The History of Madison County, Vol. 1. She was also employed as a librarian while living in Spring Branch and Houston.
Mrs. Batson was proceeded in death by her husband, Thomas Odell "Jack" Batson; four sisters, Udi Baugh, Jewell Waldrip, Zora Batson, and Lucille Norwood; two brothers, C.E. "Brother" and Brice Baugh.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas Brice Batson of College Station and Timothy Glynn Batson of Madisonville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m., Friday at the North Madison Church of Christ. Lanier Stevens will officiate with burial to follow at the Wealthy Cemetery near Normangee. Visitation will be held at the J.M. Day Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. The family will receive visitors in the Chapel from 6-8 p.m.
Braden Lee May
Funeral services for Braden Lee May, infant son of Terry and Cassandra May, were conducted Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003 at the Willowhole Chapel at Willowhole Cemetery. Rev. Dale Evans officiated.
May died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003 in Bryan.
He is survived by his parents, Terry Jr. & Cassandra (Atkinson) May of North Zulch; parternal grandfather, Terry May Sr.; paternal grandmother, Denise Martin of Oklahoma; maternal grandfather, Frank Atkinson of Normangee; maternal grandmother Debbie Yaws of Normangee; great grandparents, Ella Mae May of North Zulch; Don and Dorothy Yaws of Normangee, and Tony and Tommie Atkinson of Madisonville.
Rosa Lee Davis
Funeral Services for Rosa Lee Davis, age 95 of Madisonville, were held at 10 a.m., Monday, October 20, at the Madisonville Funeral Home. Rev. Vaughn Tatum officiated. Burial was in High Prairie Cemetery in Madison County.
Mrs. Davis was born on April 20, 1908 in Madisonville to William and Francis (Henson) Swinner and died on Friday, October 17, 2003 at her home in Madisonville. She was a lifelong resident of Madisonville and had worked as a clerk and seamstress for Crouch's for 35 years. She also worked for the Madison County Library for 13 years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church until her health failed. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Davis and a daughter, Joyce Sowell.
Survivors include sons, Gayle Davis and wife, Beverly of Acton, Calif. and Gary Davis of Madisonville; daughter, Vera Lee Johnson, Bryan; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The pallbearers were Tim Mentzel, Kevin Glenn, Shannon Taylor, Steve Glenn, Don Edward Swinner and Virgil Sowell.
