She received her schooling at Camp Ruby and Soda where she grew up. R’reather was very proud to be a fourth generation Polk Countian. She was a human encyclopedia of genealogy facts about her family and the family of her husband. She had an amazing memory and could remember dates as well as who everyone married
and the names of their children. While they were growing up, she kept her grandchildren entertained with stories of her childhood while they were shelling bushels of peas and silking corn on the back porch.
On July 11, 1931, she married
Noll Hickman in the office of County Judge Will Tullos. She and Noll worked together, hand in hand, to build a good life for themselves and their two daughters. She was a homemaker, farmer, flower gardener and cowgirl. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress and quilter. Her grandchildren often referred to her as “Dr. MawMaw” because of her natural ability to cure what ailed you. She was a strong believer that Kerosene could cure just about anything. R’reather loved to travel around and see new places whether it was ten miles away or a thousand, and she was always up for a road trip. She grieved over the fact that she could not climb Enchanted Rock after discovering it in 1999. She was afraid her bad knee wouldn’t tolerate the extreme exercise but that didn’t stop her from always wanting to go and see it again if she was in the area. She made many trips with her family, traveling around the United States but she was always happy to get back to Polk County.
