EDYTHE ANN SMITH

EDYTHE ANN SMITH, 87, of Livingston, Texas was welcomed into Heaven, a new angel, on Tuesday, the 4th day of June 2013. She was known to family and friends as a beautiful, kind and generous Spirit throughout her life, who dearly loved the Lord. She was born on January 7, 1926 in Pleasureville, Henry County, Kentucky to Clifford and Lillian Blount Pratt. Her family moved to Livingston in 1935 where her father was a local dry goods merchant. She attended the Livingston Public Schools and at the age of 16 years she graduated from Livingston High School in the Class of 1942. Following her graduation, her family moved to Kentucky for a while. She graduated from Moorehead State Teachers College, Moorehead, Kentucky in 1946 and taught elementary school at Turner’s Station, Kentucky for one year. In 1947 she returned to Livingston and taught in the Livingston Elementary School for one school year. On June 1, 1947 she married her high school boy friend, Sidney Ross Smith. She was married to Sidney for 66 years.

She and her husband owned and operated a dry goods store in Livingston for over 20 years. Sidney, who was a C.P.A., operated an accounting business and later became President of the Livingston Telephone Company. Edythe Ann became a mother, when they adopted two beautiful baby brothers, Robert Mark and Frederick Michael. During their formative years she was P.T.A. Member, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and was in charge of the Food Committee for the softball team when her sons played this sport.

Throughout her life she was an active member of the Central Baptist Church. She taught a teenage girl’s Sunday School Class; served as President and Secretary of the Nettie Cochran Sunday School Class and was Chairman of the Church Flower Committee. She was also a member of the Joy Sunday School Class.
Edythe Ann was a member of the Livingston Garden Club and Livingston Golf Club. She was a charter member of the Robert Rankin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and served as Vice Regent and Regent receiving state recognition for her work during her terms of office. She was a member of the Baylor University Women’s Club and served on Baylor’s Development Council. She has helped to support many Baylor Students in their quest towards a degree by establishing a Baylor Endowed Scholarship. She also gave a Green & White Scholarship each year for a Livingston High School graduate. In 2006 she was named an Outstanding Graduate of Livingston High School.

Edythe Ann and her husband established a charitable trust, the Smith Family Foundation. Through their generosity they built a Gazebo on the lawn of the Polk County Courthouse for public use for music concerts, weddings, etc. and gave the large chiming clock to the City of Livingston which is located in front of the new City Hall building. They also made a sizable contribution to the Polk County Higher Education Foundation for a new junior college being built and furnished a room in the new Memorial Medical Center of Livingston. To the Central Baptist Church for their new sanctuary they gave the children’s hand bells; a three manual pipe organ and a grand piano for the member’s enjoyment during worship services. These are only a few of the many charitable gifts that they have given to their Church, Livingston and Polk County.

In 2004, she became a member of the Board of Directors of the Forest Hill cemetery Association, Inc. and immediately desired to see landscape improvements to the cemetery. Through her generosity she landscaped the Memorial Garden area in the center of the cemetery which included beautiful greenery, a religious statue, State historical marker, and a flag pole for the visitors and public use.
Those who know Edythe Ann Smith well are aware that she has helped many young people with clothing, feeding, and encouragement to stay in school and graduate. She has also helped with the support of a Safehouse for women and children. There are many, many, people who have been touched by her when they have been in great need and she has quietly provided financial assistance without any public knowledge or recognition. She was a generous woman who experienced life to the fullest and accomplished her great dream--simply to matter. She was truly a notable woman of Livingston and Polk County whose presence will be greatly missed by her family, friends and colleagues.
