B.J. Pryor

B.J. Pryor, a former Smith County extension agent and president of the East Texas State Fair Association, died of natural causes at Hospice East Texas Saturday afternoon.

Pryor was the first black man in Texas to serve as the county extension chairman for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. He worked as Smith County extension agent for 39 years, and in 1979, he professed his love for the job.

Pryor is well-known for his work with the local 4-H clubs and youth development, although he and his wife, Ida, had no children.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Miles Chapel CME in Tyler, Texas. The address is 1922 N. Palace.

Bettye Jo Hill

Bettye Jo Hill, 69, died on January 11, 2006 after a long battle with cancer. She was born on August 23, 1936 in Greenville, Texas to Ben and Lorena Clifton. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, mother-in-law and grandmother. She had lived in Fulshear, Texas since 1984 where she became very well known, to many as the water well lady. Bettye was the President of Geophysical Drilling and Geophysical Water Wells for 27 years.

Bettye is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, 11 months and 28 days: Don E Hill; son: Greg Hill and wife, Darlene; and grandchildren: Amanda and Greg Jr. of Fulshear, Texas; son: Brad Hill and wife, Kim, of Houston, Texas; sister: Bennie Renee Miller of Lubbock, Texas; as well as many long time friends of the Weium Family of Fulshear and the Ferrell Family of Wallis.

A funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the Riverbend Baptist Church, 27600 FM 1093, Fulshear, Texas, with Pastor John Crowe officiating. Bettye loved to talk to customers and help them solve their water well problems when possible. She was great at giving advice as to where you did and did not want to purchase property. She cared about all the people that came and went in her life, and through Geophysical Drilling over the years. Her advice and wisdom has been a blessing to many that have known her. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.

We would like to thank Dr Freedman and his staff at M. D. Anderson for their professional and personal support, the staff members from Hospice Brenham, Venetia Schiller, Lynn Jemela, Sandra Terry, Jeanette Willis and Felisha Smith for their help, guidance, love, concern and their godly support for our family. Thank you for making Bettye’s last days on this earth as comfortable as possible. She is now in Glory Land celebrating a new life with Jesus and all of her loved ones that preceded her in death: her mother, her father and her sister, Linda. Alleluia!

Olivia Ann Robbins Peyronel

Olivia Ann Robbins Peyronel was born August 4, 1946 in Valdese, North Carolina, the daughter of Jesse and Mary Turner Robbins.

Olivia was united in marriage with Jerry Peyronel on November 8, 1968 in Houston, Texas. They have made their home in Brookshire, Texas. Olivia and Jerry were regular attendees of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Rosenberg.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Olivia enjoyed tending to her flowers and running her house.

She passed away on Friday, January 6, 2006 at her home at the age of 59. She is survived by her husband: Jerry Peyronel of Brookshire; Sons: Bobby Joe Peyronel and his wife Marie, of Katy, Martin Peyronel and his wife, Dana, of Rockport and Jerry Peyronel, II and his wife, Brenda of Katy; and daughters: Tammy Johnson and her husband, Wayne of Katy and Devon Olson and her husband, Ole, of Florida. Also surviving are her 11 grandchildren, two great grandchildren; mother; Mary Behrman of Florida; brothers: Johnny Robbins and his wife, Jessie, of Florida and Jimmy Robbins and his wife, Judy, of North Carolina; sister: Betty Holman and her husband, Hubert of North Carolina; and many other friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her father, Jesse Robbins.

Visitation was held on Saturday, January 7, 2006 from 5 p.m until 7 p.m. at Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire. The body was sent to Granite Falls, North Carolina for burial in Sunset Hill cemetery.

Local arrangements were made by Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire.

Hattie Ella Wilpitz German

Hattie Ella Wilpitz German was born December 5, 1912 in Brookshire, Texas to parents Charlie Daniel and Minna Louisa Fredricka Thiel Wilpitz. She grew up and attended school in Brookshire, and was baptized into the Lutheran faith.

On August 3, 1941, Hattie married Clarence Robert German in Houston. They made their home in the Brookshire area. Clarence preceded Hattie in death in February 1998.

A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she treasured her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, sewing and gardening, and was an excellent cook.

She passed away on Monday, December 26, 2005 in Katy. She was 93-years-old. Hattie is survived by her children: Charles German and his wife, Margaret, of Tomball, Lloyd German and his wife, Linda, of Waller, and Evelyn Stone and her husband, Zelner, of Brookshire; five grandchildren: Noel German, Shannon Abbey, Adriane Seals, Jennifer Rodgers and Jeff German; and six great grandchildren: Cody Rogers, Justin German, Carolyn German, Brandon German, Jacob Seals and Madison Rodgers. Also surviving is her brother: August Wilpitz of San Francisco; sister: Velma Paben of Waller; and many other dear friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Henry Wilpitz.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2005 at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Brookshire with Reverend Charles Stuart officiating.

In lieu of usual remembrances, friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the charity of their choice.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire.

Victor V. Canales, Jr.

Victor V. Canales, Jr., 78, of Brookshire, Texas, formerly of Victoria, Texas, died on December 19, 2005. He was born on August 28, 1927 in Victoria, Texas. He was a retired insurance agent. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by four daughters: Evangeline Gomez of Houston, Texas; Herminia Salazar of San Antonio, Texas; Alicia D. Tehero of Bothell, Washington and Margaret A. Salinas of Brookshire, Texas; three sons: Porfirio S. Canales of East Conway, New Hampshire; Victor D. Canales of San Antonio, Texas and Gilbert A. Canales of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister: Leonor Ramirez of Houston, Texas; one brother: Pete Canales of Victoria, Texas and thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alicia A Canales; father Victor Canales and mother Olivia Villareal Canales.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, December 21 at 2 p.m. at Artero Memorial Chapels in Victoria, Texas. Rosary was held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the chapel. Funeral mass was held on Thursday, December 22 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with Father Victor Scocco officiating. Burial was held in the Resurrection cemetery with full military services under Auspice of Victoria Veterans Council.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BNC Family Council at The Oaks at Brookshire, PO Box 638, Brookshire, Texas 77423.

George Paul Mazy, Jr.

George Paul Mazy, Jr. was born June 30, 1951 in Renton, Washington. His family transferred to New Orleans, Louisiana, then Cocoa Beach, Florida. After graduating from high school, Paul attended the University of Florida where he was an avid Gator fan. While in Florida, he had worked at Boeing.

He transferred to Houston to work at the Veterans Administration. Paul loved music. He had a beautiful voice and enjoyed playing his guitar and singing. An avid reader, he also enjoyed going to the library.

He passed away Monday, January 23, 2006 in Katy, Texas at the age of 54. He leaves behind his wife: Laurie Gantt of Houston; two daughters: Corinne Mazy of League City and Aubrey Mazy of Houston; two grandsons: Jaden Mazy of League City and Gavin Lennox of Houston. He is also survived by his beautiful sister: Paula Prime and his niece: Linda Prime; both of St. Petersburg, Florida; and many other dear friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Paul will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 29, 2006 with Lynn Gerhard, officiating.

In lieu of usual remembrances, friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the: Brookshire Library, 3815 6th Street, Brookshire, TX 77423.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home.

Lee Roy Paben

Lee Roy Paben was born January 28, 1945 in Pattison, Texas. The son of Arnold Richard and Inez Morgan Paben, he grew up in Pattison and attended the Royal schools. After graduating from Royal High School, he served his country in the U. S. Air Force from 1966 until 1970. After his honorable discharge, he attended Blinn College where he earned his Associate’s degree.

An adventurous person, Lee Roy enjoyed travelling and worked as a truck driver transporting household goods. He was a devoted father and grandfather, and his children and grandchildren were his life. He was also a jack-of-all-trades, and enjoyed construction.

Lee Roy lived in New Braunfels from 1993 - 2004. For the past 8 months, he had made his home in Somerville.

He passed away suddenly in San Bernardino, California at the age of 60. He is survived by his children: Michelle Ware of Corpus Christi, Shawn Paben of Lyons, Paul Paben of Houston, Matthew Paben of New Braunfels and Desiree Brandal of Houston; grandchildren: Kira Paben, Collin Ware, Alura Paben, Galen Brandal, Daniel Ware and Samantha Ware; sister: Sadie Paben of Texas City; brothers Fred Paben of Sealy and Ervin Paben of Pattison; and many other dear friends and relatives. Lee Roy was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Johnnie Paben and Arnold Paben.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel with Clarence Ware officiating. Interment icon was held in Pattison cemetery.

Pallbearers were Shawn Paben, Paul Paben, Matthew Paben, Aaron Anderson, Barkley Ware and Cliff Smith.

In lieu of usual remembrances, friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the American Cancer Society, 6301 Richmond Ave., Houston, TX 77057.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire.

John Timothy “Tim” Noel

John Timothy “Tim” Noel was born June 7, 1974 in Monroe, Louisiana to Ramona Jenkins Noel. He grew up in Louisiana and moved to Houston in 1989. Tim graduated from Clear Lake High School.

On December 21, 1996, Tim married Michelle Bateman in Katy, Texas. They made their home in the Houston area with his mother, Ramona. Michelle and Tim met at the Muscular Dystrophy summer camp.

A devoted husband, he enjoyed watching wrestling and, as an avid Star Wars fan, collecting Star Wars memorabilia. He especially loved his animals: Chewy, Blue, Sassy, Max and Meow-F.

Tim passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2006 in Houston as a result of the complications of a long bout with Muscular Dystrophy. He was 31 years old. He is survived by his wife: Michelle Noel of Houston; mother: Ramona Noel of Houston; grandmother: Pat Church of Houston; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Ron and Gloria Bateman of Brookshire; uncles and aunts: Johnny Jenkins of Houston; June McDonald and her husband, Earl, of Louisiana; Ruthie White and her husband, Mike of Louisiana; half-sister: Christy Noel of Florida; and many other friends and relatives. Tim will be missed by his family, friends and caregivers through the years.

Funeral services were Friday, January 13, 2006 at Brazos Christian Fellowship Church in Sealy, Texas with Rev. David Thomas officiating. Interment icon was held at Carrington cemetery in Pattison, Texas.

Pallbearers included Ron Bateman, Todd Benoit, John Bowman, Johnny Jenkins, Earl McDoald and Joey White. Honorary pallbearers were Gayla Adkins, Tara Gunner and Lori Benoit.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire.

Magdalena M. DeLeon

Magdalena M. DeLeon (Maggie or Nena), age 67, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at her daughter’s home in Brookshire, Tx. A native of San Benito, TX she resided in San Benito and Brookshire most of her life.

She is survived by Juan DeLeon of Cypress, TX; Raul and Marlana DeLeon of Bellville; Norma and Gonzalo Vera of Brookshire; Demetrio and Elizabeth DeLeon of Katy, Tx; 11 grandchildren, three great grandchildren; one brother Gilberto and sister-in-law Rosa Reyes; one sister Esperanza and brother-in-law Frank Romero.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at 1 p.m. at MontMeta cemetery with Deacon Juan Valez officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Trinity Funeral Home of Harlingen, Tx.

Jason Harrison Jones

Jason Harrison Jones was born in Freeport, Texas on September 3, 1982 to parents Kerry Harrison and Bea Jay Holland Thuman. He grew up in Freeport where he attended the Brazosport schools, until, at the age 11, Jason and his family moved to Brookshire where he attended the Royal schools.

Jason has made his home in Katy for the past seven months and has been employed as a delivery man for America Savings Center. He had a strong faith in God. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed watching and playing football, and loved playing any sport that involved a ball. He enjoyed music, watching movies and playing video games. He also treasured the time he spent with his fiancee Liz, and her son, Sebastian.

Jason passed away suddenly Friday, March 10, 2006 in Houston, Texas at the age of 23. He is survived by his mother and stepfather: Bea Jay and John Thuman of Brookshire; sister: Amanda Shehadeh and her husband, Ali, and their children, Corey and Jasmine all of Angleton; grandparents: Marie Marks of Lake Jackson, Billy Holland of Sweeny and Alice Fisher Thuman of Brookshire; and fiancee: Elizabeth Aguilera and her son, Sebastian, both of Katy. Also surviving Jason are numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Kerry Harrison Jones; his brother: Patrick Allen McCarthy and grandfather Thomas Watts Thuman.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 14 at 10 a.m. at Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Brookshire, Texas with Rev. Cartha Randolph, Jr. officiating and Jason McPherson assisting. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. at Plainview cemetery.

Pallbearers were William Thuman, Jr., David Holland, Darrell Hurt, George Aguilar, Sr., George Aguilera, Jr. and Daniel Cowell, Jr. Honorary pallbearers included William Thuman, Sr., Billy Joe Holland, Larry Holland and Ali Shehadeh.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home.

Patricia Glover Sampson

Patricia Glover Sampson was born October 17, 1945 in Goose Creek, Texas. The daughter of Johnny Mathews and Ann May Burl Glover, she grew up and attended school in Tarkington Prairie. She spent a couple of years in Louisiana, and for a short time, she lived in Tyler before moving to Houston.

On November 12, 1974, Pat married Jack C. Sampson in Houston. Pat and Jack have made their home in Brookshire since 1975 where Pat had been employed at Blue Barn Fun Farm.

A Catholic by faith, Pat enjoyed duck hunting and riding dirt bikes. She truly cared about other people, and enjoyed helping anyone in need. She also liked to sing and draw, and was an excellent cook.

She passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006 at her home at the age of 60. She is survived by her husband of over 31 years: Jack C. Sampson of Brookshire; children: Berry Anthony Fitzgerald of Tyler, Christle Ann Sampson of Brookshire, Jack Layfette Sampson of Florida, Josette Francis Sampson of Houston, Amanda “Angelite” Sampson of Brookshire and Erin Sampson of Spring; 23 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren; and many other dear friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Barbara Driver.

Graveside services were held Monday at 1 p.m. at Tank cemetery in Pattison, Texas with Rev. Billy Wilkins officiating.

Pallbearers were David Sampson, Jason Sampson, Bennie Sampson, Lloyd Starks, Bill Crumbo and Ike Smith.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire.

Mildred A. Ruppert

Mildred Alvena Von Bergen Ruppert passed away Monday, March 6, 2006 at the age of 91, at her home in Fulshear, Texas. She is survived by her three daughters: Pat Toole of Fulshear, Joan Ash and her husband, Randy, also of Fulshear, and Sue Cornelius and her husband, Len, of Washington, Utah; six grandchildren; Kevin Toole and his wife, Lisa, Todd Toole and his wife, Lena, Heather Cornelius, Jennifer Naae, Jared Naae, Dustin Ash and his wife, Leanne; four great-grandchildren: Erin and Morgan Toole, Caitlin and Jacob Ash; brother: William H. Von Bergen of Idaho; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband, Ray, and her son-in-law, Larry Toole.

Mildred was born January 16, 1915 in Casey, Iowa, the daughter of William C. and Alvena Richmann Von Bergen. A graduate of Casey High School, she was united in marriage with Raymond Ruppert of Mallard, Iowa on August 14, 1940 in Casey. Raymond and Mildred moved to a farm in Esterville, Iowa where they made their home for 39 years before moving to Wallingford, Iowa.

A devoted wife and mother, Mildred was active in the Farm Bureau County Extension programs as well as serving as a 4-H leader. She was also involved in all of her daughters’ activities while they were growing up. She enjoyed playing cards, golfing with her husband, and was an excellent cook, she loved entertaining.

After their retirement in 1984, Ray and Mildred moved to Mission, Texas. Ray preceded Mildred in death. In February 2003, Mildred moved to Fulshear, Texas, where she was able to be with her daughters, Joan and Pat. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Brookshire.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Brookshire with Rev. Roy Taylor officiating.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire.
