Elida Saucedo Gonzales
Elida Saucedo Gonzales was born December 17, 1944 in Eagle Lake, Texas. The daughter of Vincente, Sr. and Guadalupe Pena Saucedo, she grew up and attended school in Eagle Lake.
She married
Joe Garza Gonzales on June 4, 1961 in Brookshire. They made their home in Brookshire and were members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pattison. Joe preceded Elida in death on September 21, 2005 after 44 years of marriage.
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Elida treasured the time she was able to spend with her family. She enjoyed being a homemaker, knitting and crocheting, and was a member of the Catholic Daughters.
She passed away Friday, April 21, 2006 in Richmond, Texas at the age of 61. She is survived by her DAUGHTERS: Mary Bledsoe and her husband, William, of Katy, Beverly Ybarra and her husband, Benny, of Brookshire and Kathy Gonzales of Columbus; SON: Joe Gonzales, Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Brookshire; 8 GRANDCHILDREN; and 1 GREAT GRANDCHILD. Also surviving Elida are her BROTHERS: Louis Saucedo and his wife, Amelia, of Dallas, Vincente Saucedo, Jr. of Rosenberg and David Saucedo of Eagle Lake; SISTERS: Olga Chavez and her husband, Frank, of Houston, Gloria Lucio and her husband, Roger, of Rosenberg, Yolanda Morales and her husband, Joe, of Needville and Diana Naranjo and her husband, Rafael, of Rosenberg; and many other dear friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A Rosary was held on Monday, April 24, 2006 at 7 p.m. at Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Brookshire, Texas.
A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pattison, Texas with Father David DuBois, Celebrant officiating. Interment
was held in the Pattison cemetery.
Pallbearers were Christopher Gonzales, Jacob Gonzales, Marcus Gonzales, Michael Estrada, Alfred Gonzales, Jr. and David Gonzales.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire.
Angel Johnson
Angel Johnson, age 41 of Hempstead, passed away on May 10, 2006. Angel is survived by her parents, Gordon and Diana Paris; uncle, Freddie Schultz; nephews, Michael and Henry Schultz; and great nephew, John Schultz.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 4:00pm at Community Chapel, located at 545 Shepherd, Hempstead, TX.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Waller County Courthouse Clock Tower Fund, or to Focusing Families in Hempstead. Arrangements are under the direction of Canon Funeral Home, Waller, TX.
Mary Martha Venable
Mary Martha Venable, 81, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2006, in a local nursing home.
She was a native of Creole and lived in Grand Lake. She was a member of the Altar Society of St. Mary’s of the Lake and a member of the Homemakers Club.
She lived in the Brookshire area fifty years ago. Her husband, Lawrence Venable, operated the Nelson Rice Dryer and they lived on the Nelson Farm near Brookshire. Later, they moved to Brookshire and operated a grocery store on Front Street in Brookshire for many years. They moved to Grand Lake, near Lake Charles. The couple returned to visit in the Brookshire-Pattison area each year, where they had many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence. Survivors included her son, John Terry Venable of Centerville, Texas; a sister, Velma Fruge of Grand Lake; and two grandchildren, Jeremy Todd Venable and Jonathan Troy Venable of College Station, Texas.
Her funeral mass was at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. Father T.L. Herlong officiated. Burial was in Consolata cemetery.
Alice Gehring
Alice Louise Sammons Gehring was born in Houston, Texas on September 3, 1942, the daughter of Jesse and Ruth Bryant Sammons. She grew up and attended school in Houston. A Baptist by faith, Alice had worked as a nurse’s aide.
She passed away Friday, June 16, 2006 in Houston at the age of 63. She is survived by her sons: Demonte Gehring of Magnolia and Dean Gehring and his wife, Stacy, of Conroe; and daughter: DeEtt White of Tomball. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; one brother: Jesse Sammons, Jr. of Houston; and one sister: Bobby Gunther and her husband, Jim, of New Jersey. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.
Graveside services were held Monday, June 19, 2006 at 2 p.m. in Pattison Methodist cemetery with Rev. Herb Stallknecht officiating.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home.
Raymond Sherlock
Raymond T. “Bubba” Sherlock was born July 31, 1980 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the son of Raymond Richard and Amanthia Alderson Sherlock. He grew up in Brookshire, Texas where he attended the Royal Public Schools.
Bubba was employed with HDH and, also part-time, as a wrecker driver for Gregory’s Wrecker Service. He served his community as a volunteer firefighter for the Brookshire Volunteer Fire Department. Bubba loved being around people and helping others. He also liked to rodeo and enjoyed parties.
Bubba passed away Saturday, June 10, 2006, in Houston, Texas at the age of 25. He is survived by his son: Robert Sherlock of Katy; parents: Amanthia and Benito C. Munoz; sister Jennifer Arcos and her husband, Rosendo; nephews: Matthew, Dylan and Jesse Arcos; all of Pattison; and many dear friends.
A memorial service was held Monday, June 19, 2006 at 6 p.m. at Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Brookshire with Rev. Clyde Smalling officiating.

Jean Cleveland Hovas
Jean Cleveland Hovas was born July 10, 1917 in Coalinga, California, the daughter of Jesse Cleveland. She grew up and attended school in Baytown, Texas. A graduate of Goosecreek High School, Jean attended the Memorial Hospital Nursing School in downtown Houston, graduating in 1939. She then went to work as an Airline Stewardess for American Airlines.
Jean was united in marriage with Edward Manuel Hovas on March 1, 1943 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Houston. Jean and Ed made their home in Houston until 1978 when they moved to Brookshire.
A 63-year member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Jean was also a member of the Houston Kiwi Club, and enjoyed volunteering for the Jerry Lewis Telethon in Houston for a number of years. A member of the Edna Gladney Association, she and Ed adopted four children from Edna Gladney. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Jean treasured the time she was able to spend with her family and friends.
She passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, July 2, 2006 at the age of 88. She is survived by her children: Soghome Hovas Simmons and her husband, Doug, of Katy, Pam Hovas of Houston and John Hovas and his wife, Diane , of Brookshire; grandchildren: Eddie Hovas and his wife, Shireen, of Katy, Greg Hovas and his wife, Christie, of Fulshear, Devin Hovas of Katy, Kristen Serpas and her husband, Jeff, of Katy, and Kimberley Harrell and her husband, Avery, of Rockport; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Thomas Hovas, and her husband of 63 years, Edward M. Hovas, on June 21, 2006.
Family visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2006 in the Library of the George H. Lewis and Sons Funeral Home located at 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 Main Street in Houston with Reverend Terry Thompson officiating. A reception was held at the church immediately following the service. Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. at the Hovas family cemetery, located at 1160 Wilpitz Road in Brookshire. Pallbearers were Don Peltier, Billy Johnson, Mike Griesemer, Darryl Henry, Douglas Gregory and Marty Hajowsky.

Loraine Clinton
Loraine Jewel Werhan Clinton was born July 22, 1920, in Sentinel, Oklahoma. The daughter of Lee Rias and Ruth Jewel Deaver Werhan, she grew up and attended school in Rockport, Texas.
On August 16, 1941, she was united in marriage with Arthur E. Clinton, Sr. in Rockport. Jewel and Arthur made their home in Rockport for a number of years before retiring to Brookshire, Texas.
A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Jewel enjoyed reading, word puzzles, playing dominoes and doing needlework. As a younger woman, she enjoyed fishing and oil painting. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Katy, Texas.
Jewel passed away July 9, 2006 in Katy at the age of 83. She is survived by her children: Maxine Pate and her husband, Bill, of Brookshire, and Arthur “Buddy” Clinton, Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Vero Beach, Florida; and grandchildren: Cara and Edward Rutland of Spring, Bruce and Karin Pate of Beiber, Germany, Lynette and Blair Brooker of Searcy, Arkansas, and Carlene and Michael Wiley of Vero Beach, Florida.. Also surviving are her great grandchildren: Michael Rutland of Fort Drum, New York, Lauren and Matt Clark of Austin, Joshua, Joseph, Caleb and Noah Rutland of Spring, Jasmin, Melissa and Dominik Pate of Beiber, Germany, David Blair Brooker of Searcy, Arkansas and Troy and Faith Wiley of Vero Beach, Florida; great great grandchild: Gabriel Rutland and his mother, Erika, of Lockport, New York; several nieces, nephews, her extended family, the Pates and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Glenda McShan Garney and a brother, Fred Werhan.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire, Texas.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, July 13, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the Rockport cemetery in Rockport, Texas.

Alfred Nelson Poindexter
Alfred Nelson Poindexter, veterinarian and professor emeritus of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences died Saturday, August 19, 2006.
Dr. Poindexter joined the Prairie View A&M University family in 1945 and retired in 2004 after 59 years of service. Dr. Poindexter was affectionately known as “Doc” by clients, students, colleagues, and friends. He taught anatomy and physiology, diseases and sanitation, animal health, animal breeding and reproductive physiology.
Married 65 years to his wife Rachael Poindexter, Dr. Poindexter was 85-years-old.
Visitation was held Wednesday, August 23, 2006 from 2 to 9 p.m. at Singleton and Sons Funeral Home in Hempstead. The Poindexter family received visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 24, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the William J. “Billy” Nicks Athletic Complex (Field House). Immediately following the funeral services, interment will take place at the Prairie View cemetery.

Corinne McCauley
Corinne Vashti Wilhite Mullins McCauley was born December 20, 1905 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Dr. George Otto Wilhite and his wife, Mrs. Desda Mona Stevens Wilhite. When Corinne was 5 years old, her family moved from Missouri to San Antonio, Texas where she grew up and attended school. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Texas in Austin graduating in 1924.
In 1929, she was united in marriage with Richard H. Mullins. They made their home in Simonton where they raised their children and Corinne taught in the old elementary school.
Corinne and her children later moved to Austin where she taught at a private school. She later married
Robert Lee “Bob” McCauley in 1947. In the early 1950’s, Corinne and Bob moved to Brookshire where Corinne taught elementary school. Because of her love of children, Corinne took on the duties of raising her three grandsons. Bob also preceded Corinne in death.
Corinne enjoyed reading, especially her Bible, rock and shell collecting and flowers. An excellent cook, her specialty was homemade bread. At the age of 6, she developed a lifelong passion for painting. She especially loved to paint bluebonnets and scenic landscapes.
She passed away Saturday, August 12, 2006 at her home at the age of 100. She is survived by her daughter: Judy Childress and her husband, Walter, of Houston; grandchildren: Eddy and Susan Childress of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Rick and Ashley Mullins of Katy, David and Patty Mullins of Liberty, Doug Mullins of Brookshire and Elaine Mullins, of Katy; 8 great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, R.L. “Bob” McCauley, her son, Richard “Bubba” Mullins, and grandson, Monty Childress.
Graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 14, 2006 at the Pattison cemetery with Chaplain Lowell Whited officiating. Interment
followed in Pattison cemetery.

Jacob James Segers
Jacob James Segers, age 94, passed away on July 27, 2006. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ola Knebel Segers. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Gladys Knebel, Kitty Dennison and Dorothy Andrews as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 5 - 8 on Saturday, July 29 at Canon Funeral Home. Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Canon Funeral Home with interment following in the St. John’s Lutheran cemetery, Waller, Texas with Evelyn Cox officiating. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Canon Funeral Home in Waller.
Maria Macias Carranza
Maria Macias Carranza, age 83, passed away on August 1, 2006 in Brookshire, Texas.
Maria was born September 25, 1922. She married
Luiz Carranza in 1937 and they raised 18 children. She had 14 children of her own, 3 stepchildren and one adopted child. She also had 12 brothers and sisters. Her husband, Luiz, lived to be 100 and she took care of him until an illness took over in 2002. She was in the nursing home always surrounded by her family and friends. Maria was a housewife and loved cooking and the outdoors.
Maria was deceased by her husband in 2002, two sons Louis and Joe and two daughters, Sarah and Elvira.
She is survived by her children Roy Carranza of Houston, Tx; Celia Fernandez of Eagle Lake, Tx; Sam and Mary Carranza of Houston, Tx; Audrey and Joe Estrada of Houston, Tx; Benita Chavez of Wallis, Tx; Janice and Pete Garza of Houston, Tx; Rich and Debbie Carranza of Waller, Tx; Rosie and Howard Ramsey of Houston, Tx; Raymond and Norma Carranza of Edinburg, Tx; Liz and Pete Lleverino of Brookshire, Tx; Andrea and Johnny Campos of Frydek, Tx; Becky and Michael Harris of Pleak, Tx and Melissa and Jerry Rodriguez of Katy, Tx. She is also survived by several hundred grandchildren and five generations of great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2006 at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Rosenberg, Tx at 11 a.m. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. at Angels Crest Funeral Home. Visitation was from 3-9 on August 2, 2006. Interment
followed at Fulshear cemetery.
George Madison Pattison
George Madison Pattison, the son of Mr. Jim and Ms. Evelyn Pattison, was born on January 4, 1923 in Pattison, Texas. George was a descendent of an 1834 Land Grant Family; he was a longtime resident of Pattison where he was a graduate of Pattison High School. He continued his education earning his Bachelors Degree at Houston Baptist University and his Masters Degree at the University of St. Thomas. George served in World War II as a radio technician with the 20th Air Force on the island of Guam.
He loved people and Christian ministry was his life’s work. He actively served as minister, Sunday school teacher, Boy Scout Leader, and a mentor to numerous young people. His love for people was evident in the kindness he showed to all who knew him. For his community George Pattison established the Brandyburg Scholarship at Royal High School for a deserving graduate.
George passed away Monday, October 17, 2006 at the age of 83, at Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford, Illinois. He is survived by his brother: Joseph C. Pattison and his wife, Marie, of Pattison; sister: Corrie P. Tatum and her husband, John, of Pattison; devoted friend: Gean Carey of Rockford, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Pattison was preceded in death by his parents, James and Evelyn; wife, Verna; half-brothers, James and Vernon; and half-sisters, Vivian and Jo Addie.
Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2006 at the Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 22, 2006 at the Pattison United Methodist Church with Reverend Herb Stallknecht officiating and Father David DuBois assisting. Pallbearers were John P. Tatum, John Tatum, Michael Tatum, Al Ruble, Lawrence Brandyburg and Andrew Buy. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Keith Tingle, Sidney Levine, Oliver Kitzman, Karl Micklitz, Joe Carey and Bill Carey.

Terri Croslyn Thomas Diamond, 46, of Brookshire, passed away Oct. 25, 2006 in Houston.
Survivors: husband: Mark Diamond of Brookshire; children: Madyson Knighton, Tyler Knighton, Robert Tilotta and John Myers, all of Houston; stepchildren: Kenneth Diamond of Georgetown, Michelle Priestley and husband, Chris, of Austin; granddaughter: Kasidy Hendrick of Austin; brothers: Buddy Thomas and wife, Stephanie, of Kingwood, Chris Thomas and wife, Wendy, of Sacramento, CA and Steven Thomas of Reno, NV; mother-in-law: Sara R.
