Delmar Barry

Retired USAF Master Sgt. Tommie Delmar Barry, died peacefully, September 25, 2006, after a lengthy illness.

He is preceded in death by his parents, T. H. and Jessie Roncesvalles Barry; brothers Jeff, Jimmie, and Hubert Barry.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Freitag Barry; daughters Diannia Smith of Austin, TX, Jennifer Smith of Kingsland, TX., and Sherry Barry of Austin, TX; granddaughters, Kaysa Smith of Austin, TX., Jessica Smith of Kingsland, TX., and Chelsea Barry of Austin, TX., and great-granddaughter Holly Jones of Austin, TX.

Born August 20, 1921 in Leagueville, TX, to T. H. and Jessie Roncesvalles Barry, he was the eldest of four sons. After graduating from Hempstead High School in 1939, he briefly worked in Huntsville, TX, hoping to one day attend college, but the war intervened, as it did with so many young Texans. After joining the Army Air Corps, he was stationed in the United Kingdom, traveling throughout England and Scotland with his unit, before settling in Southampton, Hampshire, prior to the D-Day landings. On June 6, 1944 he crossed the English Channel and stormed Utah Beach as one of the first Texans to liberate Europe. From Normandy, Reims, Aachen, Luxembourg, and Germany, he was a witness to history. Upon returning home, he married Lorraine Freitag of Monaville, TX., on December 8, 1945.

While he was stationed at bases in Louisiana, Virginia, and Wichita Falls, the majority of his career was spent at Bergstrom Air Force Base, where he was a Crew Chief in the 27th Strategic Fighter Wing under the 8th Air Force. Initially flying the P/F-82 "Twin Mustang" and P/F-51 "Mustang", the wing flew fighter escort operations. Upgrading to F-84E jets in 1950, the Wing won the Mackay Trophy for successful deployment of 90 F-84s from Bergstrom AFB, to Furstenfeldbruck AB, West Germany, in September 1950, via Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, and England. This was the first long-range mass flight of jet aircraft in aviation history.

During the Korean War, the 27th SFW deployed to Japan. The Wing flew combat missions in Korea until June 1951 and returned to the United States. The Wing redeployed to Japan during October 1952 - February 1953 to provide air defense. Bergstrom F-84E fighters dogfight Soviet-built MiG-15s over North and South Korea. In more than 18 months of aerial combat, the Austinites fly 13,110 sorties.

After retiring from the USAF in 1962, he worked for the USPS, and further distinguished himself as the personal mailman for President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Following the President’s passing in 1973, he remained in service to Lady Bird Johnson until his retirement from the LBJ Presidential Library in 1983. Returning to Hempstead later that year, he cared for his mother, Jessie, until her death in 1989, and worked at the family store, Barry Feed & Grain, with his brother Hubert, and sister-in-law, Mildred Barry.

A lifelong Democrat, he served as on the City Council and later as a Waller County Commissioner from January 1, 1989 to December 31, 1996. From 1994 until his death, he courageously battled kidney and cancer and blindness. At his 85th birthday celebration in his new home in Austin, Texas, with all three daughters at his side, he enjoyed his favorite coconut cream pie, and a winning day for both the Texas Longhorns and the Houston Astros. While Delmar was unable to view television, he enjoyed listening to games on a radio headset, as well as current news programs. He was especially concerned about the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. He never gave up his zest for living, even in his final days.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Mission Funeral Home Serenity Chapel 6204 South First Street Austin, TX. 78745.

From academics to being a true warrior, the lessons she taught many the strength to handle life’s adversities.
