Dr. Fehrman Harlan Lund
Funeral services were held for Dr. Fehrman Harlan Lund, 98, on Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Redeemer Lutheran Church of Cisco, with the Rev. Martin Kaufmann officiating. Lund was born on Aug. 24, 1922, in Bosque County, to Lawrence and Pauline Lund. He died on Nov. 3, 2000, in Eastland. Lund served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the Persian Gulf Command. Lund graduated from Clifton High School in 1940, and was a graduate of Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. He married
his high school sweetheart, Helen Landgraf, on March 24, 1945, at Immanual Lutheran Church in Clifton. In May, 1950, Lund purchased an optometry practice that was for sale in Eastland, where he moved with Helen and eight-month-old son Stephen. Later, three children, Craig, Paula, and Brian, were born to the couple in Eastland. He retired from practice on Dec. 31, 1997, after 47 years. He was a member of the Eastland Lions Club for 41 years; an active member of the Quarterback Club for many years; and served on the Eastland ISD Board of Trustees for nine years. He was on the Boy Scout Comanche Trail Advisory Board. His sons, Steve, Craig, and Brian all earned Eagle Scout Awards. He was also active and held many offices at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cisco, where he and his family were members for 50 years. His favorite past-times were his family, gardening, hunting, and golf. His living legacy is his wonderful family who will miss his loving presence. Memorials may be made to the Eastland Centennial memorial Library, Redeemer Lutheran Church, or to one’s favorite charity. Survivors include his wife, Helen L. Lund of Eastland; his sons, Stephen of Palestine, Craig of Elkhart, and Brian of Fort Worth; his daughter Paula Oxford of Stephenville; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and his brother, Lloyd Lund of Dallas. Interment
was in the Eastland City cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Eastland.
Willie Frances Kelly Bonds
Graveside services will be held today, Nov. 10, 2000, for Willie Frances Kelly Bonds, 89, of Patterson, La., at the Smith Bend Coon Creek cemetery, at 10 a.m. A native of Clifton, Bonds has been a resident of Patterson, La., since 1983. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ewell W. Bonds; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Kelly; and three brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Haynes Lee of Anahuac, and Mrs. Sandra Roberts of Berwick, La.; one son, Kenneth Bonds of Patterson, La.; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren.
Brenda Gayle Burks Patterson
Funeral services were held for Brenda Gayle Burks Patterson, 46, on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at 2 p.m., at Clifton Funeral Home with Bro. Barney Arnett of Bibleway Church of Waco officiating. Brenda Gayle Burks was born Sept. 3, 1954, in Comanche, the daughter of Gaylord and Ollie Guill Burks. She died on Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at her home. Gary Mack Patterson on Aug. 4, 1990, in Comanche. The couple moved to Clifton, where they lived at the time of her death. She had six children. She was a licensed vocational nurse and a member of Bibleway Church. She enjoyed crafts and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Crystal. Survivors include her husband, Gary Patterson of Clifton; two daughters, Anesha Ihlenfeldt of Aquilla, and Brandi Barnett of Bay City; three sons, Nathan McGinn of Hillsboro, Dusty McGinn of Clifton, and Jarrod Patterson of Clifton; three sisters, Dena Halcomb of DeLeon, Amy Bingham of Comanche, and Jennifer Wilder of Goldthwaite; two brothers, Richard Burks of Brownwood and Bobby Burks of Comanche; her mother and father, Gaylord and Ollie Burks of Clifton; and six grandchildren. Pallbearers were Billy Patterson, Ronnie Patterson, Tony Patterson, Randy Patterson, Terry Patterson, and William Dickson. Interment
was in Coon Creek cemetery at Smith Bend under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Mary Ellen Swenson Ellingson
A memorial service was held for Mary Ellen Swenson Ellingson, on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Waco. Graveside services were held at 4 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran cemetery in Clifton. Mary Ellen was born on the Questad Place in Norse on Jan. 14, 1914. She died on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton. She was baptized May 24, 1914, in the First Presbyterian Church in Clifton and was confirmed in First Lutheran Church in Waco on March 30, 1947. Mary Ellen and her sister, Martha Louise, stayed with their Grandmother Swenson for six years in Clifton in order to attend the Clifton public school. Her parents moved to Clifton in the summer of 1926, after the death of her Grandmother Swenson. She graduated from Clifton High School in 1931 and attended Draughton’s Business School in Dallas in 1931-32, and Clifton Junior College in 1932-34. She taught primary grades in rural districts of Bosque County and received her degree in 1939 from North Texas State University in Denton. She served as primary teacher at Masonic Home from 1939 to 1942. She then worked as a secretary at the U.S. Training Command in Fort Worth in 1942-43, and then as a typist as Consolidated Aircraft in 1943-44. She returned to Clifton and taught second grade in 1944-45. In Fort Worth, on Nov. 22, 1944, Mary Ellen was married
to Allen Benhard Ellingson. They moved to Waco in November 1945 after Allen’s discharge from the U.S. Navy, where he had a position with the Veteran’s Administration. Mary Ellen taught in the Waco public schools and retired in May, 1977. She and Allen held positions in First Lutheran and St. Matthew Lutheran Churches and participated in several community and professional organizations. She also sewed, quilted, maintained genealogical collections, and painted with oils and acrylics. China painting was her most cherished art as she created many pieces. She became interested in Rosemaling while touring the Scandinavian countries in the summer of 1982. Meeting Allen’s relatives in Norway and Mary Ellen’s relatives in Denmark were the highlights of the trip. They enjoyed arts and crafts and participated in many shows in surrounding towns. Allen and Mary Ellen resided in Waco for most of their married
lives, before moving to the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home in April 1995. Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Jane Metz and husband, Davis, of Waco; one son, Lee Allen Ellingson of Terre Haute, Ind.; one grandson, Junius Davis Metz III (Trey) of Lubbock; two stepchildren, Christopher Metz and Jennifer Metz, both of Mexia; one sister, Martha Louise Aars of Clifton; and one brother, Questad Swenson of Fort Worth, along with several nieces and nephews. Interment
was in Trinity Lutheran cemetery in Clifton under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
George D. Busch
Funeral services were held for George D. Busch, 71, on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Greenwood Chapel at Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Busch was born Nov. 1, 1929, in Dallas. He died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, in Houston. Busch, an attorney in Fort Worth since 1960, graduated from Texas Christian University in 1951, and the University of Texas Law School in 1956. He was a member of the Tarrant County Bar Association, Texas Bar Assoc., and the American Bar Assoc. He was also a member and past-president of the Tarrant County Trial Lawyers Assoc., a member and past director of the Texas Trial Lawyers Assoc., and a municipal judge in the City of Axle in 1992. In 1994, he and his wife, Betty, established Homebound Healthcare, a home health agency in Azle, which continues today. He was preceded in death by a son, Steven C. Busch. Survivors include his wife, Betty Busch of Azle; three sons, Joe Busch and wife, Elizabeth, of Fort Worth, Kyle Busch and Bradley Busch both of Axle; three daughters, Susan Busch of Burleson, Julia Busch Ulrich and husband, Rick, of Springdale Ark., and Sally Lunsford and husband, Dennis, of Fort Worth; three grandchildren, and a sister, Margaret Carpenter of Clifton. Memorials may be made to Texas Heart Institute, 1101 Bates, Houston, 77030. Interment
was in Greenwood Memorial Park, Fort Worth, under the direction of the Greenwood Funeral Home of Fort Worth.
Auta Kyle Kemp Butler
Funeral services were held for Auta Kyle Kemp Butler, 96, of Valley Mills, on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at 10:30 a.m., at Valley Mills Church of Christ with the Revs. Roland Anderson, Gary Blakeney, and John Fields officiating. Harvesters Quartet sang selected songs during the service. Auta Kyle Kemp was born Sept. 28, 1904, in Clifton, the daughter of William Kemp and James Henrietta Adams Kemp. She passed away on Oct. 26, 2000, at 7:15 a.m., at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. Butler attended Clifton schools and graduated from Clifton high School in 1925. She married
William Clarence Butler on June 2, 1925, in Clifton. The couple had six children. She was a loving wife and mother. She was a member of the Valley Mills Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.C. Butler in May 1987; one son, Donald Butler, in 1954; and one son, Duane Butler, in 1995. Survivors include four children, Philip Lyn Butler of China Springs, David C. Butler of Valley Mills, Patricia Ricot of Arlington, and Jane Anderson of Clifton; 15 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Pallbearers included Lynn Butler, Wade Anderson, Steve Butler, Mike Butler, Brian Jaynes, and Max Fowler. Interment
was in the Valley Mills cemetery.
John Tom Gillaspie
Funeral services were held for John Tom Gillaspie, 57, of Clifton, on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at Bosque Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Creamer officiating. Gillaspie was born on Oct. 12, 1943, in Waco, the son of Dorethea Wester and Monk Gillaspie. He died on Oct. 30, 2000, in his home. He attended schools in Meridian and Clifton. He married
Barbara Gail Gillaspie on July 18, 1983. They had three children. He was a truck driver for Central for 12 years, and for Chemical Lime for 18 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed gardening, working on cars, and animals. He was a good husband, father, and grandfather and he loved his cat “Yoyo.” He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his parents. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Gillaspie of Clifton; three children, Brian Gillaspie and wife, Mindi, Brent Gillaspie and wife, Mindi, and Leonard Gayle Jr. and wife, Alisa; two grandchildren, Brena Gillaspie and Nikki Stone; and his beloved cat “Yoyo.” Pallbearers were Jimmy Evans, Richard Woods, Johnny Greenwade, Dusty Beets, Randy Lane, and Wayne Light. Honorary pallbearers were Sonny Sadler, Jerry Sadler, Paul Pitts, Tina Lalonde, Gary Waller, Charlie Paris, and Bill Price.
Hettie Mae (Dutch) Thoede
Funeral services for Hettie Mae (Dutch) Thoede, 83, formerly of Temple, were held on Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at 2 p.m., at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple. She was born on March 10, 1917, in Cameron, the daughter of Charlie Edward Overton and Hettie Lou Jones Overton. She died on Nov. 3, 2000, at the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. She was the wife of the late Frederick John Thoede. She was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Rosemary Russo; a sister, Lillian; and a brother, Mike. She is survived by two sons, Thomas E. Thoede and his wife, Eileen, of Sugarland, and Donald R. Thoede and his wife, Joan, of Clifton; one step-son, Fred J. Thoede, Jr., and his wife, Joyce, of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; and two grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren. Pallbearers included Tom Thoede, Don Thoede, Gene Robert York, James Randall York, Walter Braun, Dick Bliss, Brian Knight, and Karen Knight. Honorary pallbearers were Fred Thoede, Jr. and Michelle Thoede. Interment

Ida Lee Etchison
Funeral services for Ida Lee Etchison, 79, of Meridian, were held Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in the Lawson Funeral Home Chapel, Meridian, the Rev. Richard Creech and Minister Michael Nelson officiating. Burial followed in the Meridian cemetery. Etchison passed away early Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Goodall-Witcher Hospital, Clifton. Born Ida Lee Cook on Sept. 2, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Minnie Gifford Cook in the Steiner area. She was raised in Steiner and educated in Kopperl. On Dec. 28, 1939, she was united in marriage to Thomas W. (Burr) Etchison in Steiner. The couple resided in Allen Bend, Corpus Christi, and Morgan until moving to Meridian in 1947 to their family farm just north of Meridian. She worked as a nurse for many years, and was also a homemaker. Her husband preceded her in death in 1996. Etchison is survived by daughters Carolyn Ulrich and husband Stewart of Tool, Ruthie Andress and husband Al of San Marcos, and Jean Richardson and husband Daniel of Scurry; a son, Roy Wayne Etchison and wife Alma of Scottsboro, Ala.; two sisters, Marie Ivy and Ruth Britton, both of Fort Worth; a brother, W.E. (Bill) Cook of Angleton; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Pallbearers were Scott Ulrich, Mark Pace, Garry Andress, Rod Cox, Tim Spitzer, and Larry Britton. Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian was in charge of arrangements.
