J.W. Jenson
Funeral services were held for J.W. Jenson, 88, on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Clifton Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Glenn Kramer officiating. J.W. Jenson was born to William and Clara Jenson on Dec. 10, 1912, on the family farm west of Clifton. He passed away on Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at a Fort Worth hospital after a short illness. He attended Harmony School. As a young man, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp, in the late 1930s and spent time planting trees and doing conservation work in the parts in New Mexico, and other areas. He like to fish, hunt, and play dominoes. He often talked about the trips he took to Colorado and other states. In 1956 he married Epsa Harwell. They made their home in Fort Worth, where he worked for Acme Floor Co. for many years. In 1978, they moved to the family farm in Bosque County. He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years; his parents; three brothers, Weldon, Horace, and James; and two sisters, Dorothy Vrontikis and Myrtice Stroud. Survivors include two sisters, Esther McKinley of Arlington and Joyce Price of Fort Worth; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Pooch. Pallbearers included Mike McKinley, Glenn Jenson, Larry McKee, Leon Russell, Brandon Russell, and Brady Russell. Interment icon was at Norse cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Samuel H. Kelley
Mass of Christian Burial was held for Samuel H. Kelley of Dallas on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at 10 a.m., at St. Piux X Catholic Church, officiated by Celebrant Bishop Delaney, Father Dan Kelly, pastor of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Clifton and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Morgan, along other priests. Kelley joined his Father in Heaven on Jan. 12, 2001. He was co-owner of Central Medical Laboratories and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was an active member of St. Piux X parish and named Man of the Year at St. Piux X in 1965. He was honored by the Bishop for his outstanding work in the C.C.D., in 1966-67. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kelley, and children, Kathey, Cindy, Dan, Sam, Tim, Maria, and Tom; his brother, Herman Kelley of Vancouver, Wash.; his sister, Bernice Wohosky of Carson City, Nev.; 21 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Interment icon was in Sacred Heart cemetery in Rowlett under the direction of Sparkman/Crane Funeral Home of Dallas.

Rev. Dr. Charles P. Harnest
A Celebration of Life for the Rev. Dr. Charles P. Harnest, 73, was held Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, and a memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at John Knox Presbyterian Church. Harnest died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in his sleep following a long bout with cancer. He was born in San Antonio in 1927. He attended public schools, Texas A&M; University, and Southwestern University in Georgetown. He received his Doctorate of Ministry with majors in Pastoral Counseling and Social Action from Brite Divinity School (Texas Christian University). He did post doctorate studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, with a major in Process Theology. Dr. Harnest was a pastoral counselor in private practice, and a Fellow member of the American Association of Transactional Analysis Association. He served pastorates as a Presbyterian minister in Raymondville, Sweetwater, Amarillo, and Fort Worth. After retirement, he became trained as an interim pastor for Grace Presbytery, and served churches in Fort Worth, Granbury, Mineral Wells, and Clifton. He was the organizing pastor at St. Francis Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, where he was the stated supply minister for 24 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. Later, as an Air Force chaplain (Civilian Auxiliary), he was awarded a commendation by the 33rd Air Command of the Air Force. Dr. Harnest published several articles in pastoral counseling journals and church periodicals. He loved to sail, grow roses and other flowers, took up bird watching, and was a special fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Harris-Harnest; five children, Cheryl Harnest of New York City, Pamela and husband Dr. Pat Bucy of Birmingham, Ala., Matthew Harnest of Fort Worth, Valerie and husband Bruce Kasten of Carbondale, Ill., and Cynthia Harnest of Grapevine; stepchildren Leigh and Mark Le Fon of Denver, Colo., David and Elizabeth Harris of Albuquerque, N.M., Amy Harris of Austin, and Lt. Ian and Lara Manire of Shreveport, La.; 11 grandchildren and one more on the way. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Harnest had requested memorial gifts be sent to the Austin Presbyterian Seminary Scholarship Fund, 100 East 27th Street, Austin, TX 78705, or to a favorite charity.

Ovie Clarence Huse
Funeral services were held for Ovie Clarence Huse, 90, of Cranfills Gap, on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at 2 p.m., in St. Olaf Lutheran Church at Cranfills Gap, with the Rev. Terry Atkins and Rev. Bill Schibler officiating. Huse was born on Sept. 15, 1910, in Hamilton County, the son of Ole and Mary Huse. He passed away on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in the Clifton Care Center following a long illness. On Dec. 15, 1935, Huse married Betty Ann Hall. They lived in and around Cranfills Gap, where Huse was a farmer and carpenter. He retired in 1972. After retirement, he and Betty enjoyed traveling and having a pretty garden and yard. His sense of humor and smile will truly be missed by his family, friends, and acquaintances. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; and two sisters, Jewel Johnson and Alma Johnson. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Betty Huse of Cranfills Gap; daughter Elaine Moore and her husband, Dalton, of Cranfills Gap; two sons, Ovie Clarence Huse Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Mineral Wells, and Charles Huse and his wife, Pat, of Fort Worth; one brother, Morris Huse of Jonesboro; one sister, Lenora Schibler of Magnolia, Ark.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members. Memorials may be made to St. Olaf Church or a favorite charity. Pallbearers include Terry Moore, Bobby Moore, Jerry Shivers, Steve James, Todd Huse, and Steve Tate. Interment icon was in Boggy cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Homer Owen McDougal
Funeral services were held for Homer Owen McDougal, 78, of Clifton, on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at 10 a.m., at First Methodist Chruch in Clifton with the Rev. Cleon Flanagan and Rev. Marvin Moore officiating. McDougal was born on Sept. 12, 1922, at Clifton, to Mead McDougal and Ottilie Boelter. He passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. He attended school at Womack. On March 31, 1951, he married Emma Schraeder. The couple had one child and lived in Clifton all their lives. He worked at General Tire in Waco, and owned McDougal Repair Shop in Clifton. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School superintendent for 15 years, president of the men’s club, a member of the church board, and the head usher for 18 years. He was a member of the city council for one year, the Central Texas Fair for 30 years, and the Clifton Volunteer Fire Department for 24 years. McDougal was also a president of Farmers Mutual Insurance, American Cancer Society, and a Boy Scout leader. His hobbies included working on lawn mowers and small engines, and dancing. He loved to help others. In recent years he opened his shop up for domino playing and socializing. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Lorie Boy, Alfred, Chester, and Nealy. Survivors include his wife, Emma McDougal; and son, Jerry McDougal and wife, Sharon, and his granddaughter, whom he called his “little angel, ” Carla McDougal. Pallbearers included Marvin Reich, Johnnie Berger, Harry Willmann, Gene Hoppe, Bob Ramey, and Donald Schraeder. Honorary pallbearers included Paul Hutton, Oscar Hampe, Ervin Dreyer, Tak Outlaw, Freddie Lovell, and Marcus Jermstad. Interment icon was in Clifton cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

R.E. (Bob) Nichols
Funeral services were held for R.E. (Bob) Nichols, 88, on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at 2 p.m., at Clifton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Davenport officiating. Robert Eugene Nichols was born on Sept. 24, 1912, the son of Jeff and Gussie (Simpson) Nichols, in El Campo. He passed away at Meridian Manor on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001. Nichols married Sybil Wells on Oct. 7, 1939, in Richmond. The couple had five children. From 1939 to 1945 the couple lived in Angleton; from 1945 to 1960, they lived in Meridian and Clifton, from 1961 to 1975, they lived in California; and since 1975, they have lived in Clifton. He was a rice farmer, a retired operating engineer Local Union #3 California, and a self-employed heavy-equipment operator. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a dedicated and loving father and grandfather. He was well known for his work ethic, strength of character, and his willingness to help his friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Faye Nichols, in 1951. Survivors include his wife, Sybil Nichols; daughters, Sydney Contino of Houston, Daphne Henchel of Fresno, Calif., Robbie Sarkisian of Orangevale, Calif., and Pam Hudson of Clifton; a sister, Florence Warren of Douglass; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Pallbearers included Jimmy Nichols, David Nichols, Charles Warren, Dennis Sarkisian, Chris Herzog, and Jimmy Sommerfeld. Interment icon was in Meridian cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Ismael Ponce Jr.
A funeral mass was celebrated for Ismael Ponce Jr., 18, on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2000, at 3 p.m., at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Clifton. Rosary was recited at Clifton Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. Ponce was born Jan. 20, 1982 in Clifton to Alma Gardea and Richard Thiele. He was pronounced dead, following a vehicle wreck, at 2:40 a.m., on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001. Ponce attended Clifton schools and graduated in the Class of 2000 from Clifton High School. He married Noemi Ramirez in January 2000, in Clifton. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Chruch. He worked at the Clifton hatchery of Cargill. He was a member of lowriders clubs and his hobbies included model cars, comic books, and collecting baseball cards. He enjoyed having fun, being happy, and having a good time with his family and friends. Surviviors include his wife, Noemi Ponce of Clifton; mother and step-father, Alma and Richard Thiele of Clifton; grandfather, Javier Gardea of Kansas City, Kan.; three sisters, Alma Liseth Ponce, Blanca Thiele, and Helen Thiele, all of Clifton; and two uncles, Francesco Gardea and Frenando Gardea, both of Clifton. The family requests memorials may be made to the Catholic Church or the Clifton Volunteer Fire Department. Pallbearers included Sergio Gonzales, Salvador Murillo, Jaun Antonio Montana, Francisco Poente, Jose Villalpando, Carlos Montes, Jessie Villalpando, Salvador Guerrero, Gerald Sedberry Jr., and Monzo Soto. Interment icon was in the Clifton Memorial cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Stella (Jenson) Samuelson
Funeral services were held for Stella (Jenson) Samuelson, 82, of Clifton on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2000, at 2 p.m., at Bumgardener Funeral Home in Fort Worth. She was born June 8, 1918, near Cranfills Gap, on a farm in the Mustang area, to her parents, Bennie and Alma Jenson. She was also the great-granddaughter of Jens and Thonje Jenson, who were one of the first nine families to settle in Bosque County. She passed away at the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home on Monday, Jan. 8, after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Samuelson, whom she married on Oct. 10, 1940, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap. They moved to Fort Worth in 1949, making their home there until her illness caused her to be confined in a nursing home and she moved to Clifton. Survivors include her three children, son, Fred Samuelson and wife, Carolyn, of Clifton; son, Gary Samuelson and wife, Nanette of Aledo; and daughter, Sandra Samuelson of Fort Worth; also six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Lucien C. Hill
Graveside services were held for Lucien C. Hill, 90, of Walnut Springs, on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at 1:30 p.m., in the Oak Grove cemetery in Walnut Springs, with the Rev. Kenneth Stevens and the Walnut Springs Masonic Lodge officiating. Hill was born Sept. 28, 1910, in Iowa Park, a son of the late Walter R. and magnolia Horsley Hill. He passed away on Dec. 27, 2000, in Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton. He was raised and educated in Walnut Springs. He later attended John Tarleton College in Stephenville. He was united in marriage to Dovie Driskill on Nov. 12, 1933, in Fort Worth. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served during World War II. Hill lived in Fort Worth for 20 years where he worked in security for Lockheed-Martin Corp. until retiring and moving back to Walnut Springs in 1973. He served on the Walnut Springs City Council, served as City Judge, served on the Walnut Springs School Board, and was a member of Walnut Springs Masonic Lodge and Church of Christ. Memorials may be made to Lucien Hill Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Bosque County Bank, P.O. Box 527, Meridian, Texas 76665. Survivors include his wife, Dovie Hill of Walnut Springs; one sister, Ruth Blackwell of Fort Worth; a number of nieces and nephews, including Cindy and Rick Newton of Clifton, along with other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Matt Newton, Rick Newton, Tom Hill III, Dave Keller, John D. Fenn, and Melvin Davis. Interment icon was in the Oak Grove cemetery under the direction of Lawson Funeral Home.
