John T. Weeks
Funeral services were held for John T. Weeks, 76, of Meridian, on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at 4 p.m., at Lawson Funeral Home Chapel, with Michael Nelson officiating. Clifton VFW Post 8553 was in charge of military honors. Weeks was born on Sept. 5, 1925, in Meridian, the son of the late Drury and Mary A. Tanner Weeks. He passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Scott & White Hospital in Temple. Weeks was educated in Meridian. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944, and served 28 years, retiring in 1972, as a Sergeant First Class. On April 18, 1974, he married
Liz Jones Free in Cleburne, and then moved to Meridian. Weeks later worked for a time with Bosque County. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Liz Weeks of Meridian; daughters, Dee Trussell and husband, Bruce, of Hot Springs, Ark., Della Creighton and husband, Kelly, of Fort Worth, and Barbara Edwards and husband, James, of Cleburne; sons Wesley Free of Aruba and Johnny Free of Meridian; sisters, Mary Jo Tope of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Zoe Gibbs of El Paso; a brother, George Weeks of Big Spring; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Lawson Funeral Home of Meridian was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Betty Jeanne Wilkes Pederson
Funeral services were held in Midland for Betty Jeanne Wilkes Pederson, 73, of Midland. Betty Jeanne Wilkes was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Houston, to Johnathan B. and Anna Mae McCarty Wilkes. She passed away on Oct. 9, 2001, at her home in Midland as a result of cancer. She attended private school in Dallas 1933, and moved back to Houston in 1934 where she attended school, graduating from high school in 1943. She attended the University of Houston in 1943-44, then attended Texas Christian University, graduating in Jan. 1947, with a degree in geology. After graduation, she went to work for Humble Oil and Refining Company (now Exxon) in Houston as a geologist. She then transferred to Midland, where she married
Clyde Marion Pederson on Aug. 14, 1948. The couple had two daughters. Pederson taught Earth Science at Alamo Junior High School from 1968-77, during which time she was selected to appear in the 1975-76 edition of Who’s Who in Texas Education, a compilation of outstanding educators in the State of Texas. She taught geology at Midland College from 1978 to 1980. She was a past-member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, West Texas Geological Society, West Texas Orchid Society, and the American Orchid Society. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clyde; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Hill. Survivors include her daughters, Sherry Kimbrow and husband, Mike, of Burnet, and Marilyn Hill and her husband, Mike, of Andrews; two grandchildren, Fletcher and Lori Hill of Andrews; numerous nieces and nephews, four sisters-in-law, Patsy Pederson, Mary Evelyn Pederson, Marion Pederson, and Ollie Mae Greewade. Memorials should be sent to the charities of choice. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Betty L. Lockett
Funeral services were held for Betty L. Lockett, 69, of Brownwood, on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at 11 a.m., at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Beckling officiating. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m., at the Millersview cemetery in Concho County, under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early. Betty Stuart was born in Ballinger the daughter of Emmitt and Myrl Williams Stuart. She graduated from high school in Eden in 1949. She was a retired vice-president of the Ross Company in Early and a longtime resident of Brown County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Early. She was preceded in death by her father, Emmitt Stuart. Survivors include two sons, Kenny Lockett and wife, Donna, of Early, and Kerry Lockett and wife, Jackie, of De Rio; one daughter, Kathy Fossett and husband, Gary Fossett, of Clifton; her mother, Myrl of Brownwood; two brothers, John Lee Stuart of San Angelo, and Troy Stuart of Yorktown; one sister, Barbara Hart of Bangs; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Lewis J. Dahl
Funeral services were held for Lewis J. Dahl, 93, of Clifton, on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Glenn Kramer officiating. Lewis Julian Dahl was born on Oct. 15, 1907, in Hamilton County, to John and Ingvaline (Ellingson) Dahl. He was the fourth of five children. The others, now deceased, were Hans, Fred, Albert, and Inez. He passed away on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, in Clifton. Dahl grew up in the Mustang community of Bosque County, attending school there and then completing his education at the Clifton College Academy in 1924. He lived and worked on the family farm until the Great Depression, when he found work at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas. A few years later, Dahl returned to Clifton, and on Dec. 6, 1937, he married
Myrtle Murphree at St. Olaf Lutheran Church (Rock Church). The couple was blessed with four children, Mary Lou, John, Robert, and Debbie. The family lived in Fort Worth for many years. Dahl worked at Convair Aircraft and Vaught Aircraft until he retired in 1972. During retirement he worked as custodian of Faith Lutheran Church, Fort Worth. In 1985, Lewis and Myrtle moved to Clifton where they have been active members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Dahl was very active in church work in Forth Worth, serving on the church council and singing in the choir at Faith Lutheran. His hobbies included fishing, dominoes, cards, and watching the hummingbirds at his feeder. He was a great fan of the Texas Ranger Baseball Team. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle; children, John Dahl, Bob Dahl, and Debbie Dahl Webster; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Interment
was in the Norse cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Charlie J. Urban
Funeral services for Charlie J. Urban, of Azle, formerly of Weinert, were held on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at White Funeral Home in Azle, at 10 a.m. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m., at Willow cemetery in Haskell. Services were officiated by the Rev. Joe Stulir, a nephew of the deceased. Charlie was the youngest child of Peter K. and Klara Svach Urban. He was born on White Ranch in Bosque County on Nov. 4, 1918. He died on Oct. 7, 2001. After his mother died in 1934, he moved with his father and brother, Frank, to Haskell County where they farmed. In 1939, Charlie married
Lillie Stulir and they farmed in the Weinert area until 1960, when they moved to Azle. Charlie was a master carpenter and woodworker. He love hunting, fishing, boating, and all outdoor activities. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lillie, who died in 1986; brothers Joe, Pete, John, and Frank Urban; and sisters, Clara, Christina, Agnes, and Mary. Survivors include his son, Charles B. Urban and wife, Pam, of Weatherford; grandson Michael Urban of Fort Worth; one sister, Anna Urban Sommerfeld of Clifton; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including a special friend, Helen Spurrier of Weatherford. Interment
was in Willow cemetery under the direction of White Funeral Home of Azle.
Josephine Urban Gouldman
Funeral services were held for Josephine Urban Gouldman, 70, of Laguna Park, on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church, Laguna Park. Josephine Victoria Urban was born to Joseph and Ella Sommerfeld Urban, on Jan. 17, 1931, in Bosque County. She passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She grew up in the Smith Bend, Coon Creek communities and graduated from Clifton High School. She married
her high school sweetheart, Billie Earl Gouldman, on Sept. 6, 1952, in Harris County. Most of their married
life was spent in the Houston-Baytown area. They enjoyed hunting and fishing together and often travel in their private plane. In 1992, they returned to Bosque County to build their retirement home, but Billie preceded Josephine in death in May, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and son-in-law, Bruce Rowland, who died in December, 1999. She remained active in the Laguna Park community, among family and lifelong friends who loved her. Her quilting was admired by all and was cherished as gifts by her family and friends. At the time of her death, she was working on a quilting project for her children. She was a faithful member of the congregational family of First Baptist Church, treasurer of the Smith Bend-Coon Creek cemetery Association, and a member of the Bluebonnet Club where she regularly played dominoes. She and a double first cousin together pursued the genealogy of their shared ancestry, enjoying great fun, joy, and excitement over their discoveries. Josie is survived by her children, Janice Rowland of Baytown, and Steven Gouldman and wife, Karen of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Ella Poston of Waco; two brother, Joe Urban of Waco and Bobby Urban of Dickinson; grandson, Brandon Rowland of Baytown; a special aunt, Ann Urban Sommerfeld, and double-first cousins, Helen Sommerfeld Amundson and Patricia Sommerfeld Lyon of Clifton; brothers-in law, Jake Gouldman and wife, Jean, Reuben Gouldman and wife, Ruby, of Laguna Park, Tar Gouldman and wife, Jimmie, and Clyde Gouldman and wife, Dorothy of Houston; a sister-in-law, Mary Helen Gouldman Kleypas and husband, Darrell, all of Laguna Park; and multiple Urban and Sommerfeld kin, having been one of 11 double-first cousins. She will be missed, but will always be remembered with love and laughter. Pallbearers included Joe Urban, Bobby Urban, Charles Urban, Don Urban, Ralph Sommerfeld, Derryl Kleypas, and Tommy Lange. Chris (Cowboy) Slagle
Funeral services were held for Chris (Cowboy) Slagle, 22, of Clifton, on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Clifton, with pastor Dr. Jerry Smith officiating. Chris Slagle was born on Dec. 5, 1978, in the heart of Cowboy Country, Canyon, Texas. He was one of two children born to Terry Lee and Holly Hite Slagle. He died on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001. In his early years, he lived in Fort Worth and attended Keller Elementary School. He enjoyed many sports such as baseball, soccer, and basketball. He was particularly good at basketball due to his quickness, agility, and height. As he grew, the family took up the sport of dirt bike racing and enjoyed this activity together. In his middle school years, he moved to Katy, where he attended school. During his high school years, he lived on Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch in Channing. It was there that he found his niche with horses, cattle, ranching, farming, and the great outdoors. Slagle moved to Clifton in 1997, and attended McLennan Community College for a time, majoring in business. He worked in the farming and ranching business for Robert Payne Agri-business for the last four years, and was well-known by his nickname, Cowboy. He could be seen everywhere, driving a large four-wheeled John Deere tractor, usually pulling a tandem disc or planter box, or driving a large fertilizer or grain truck. He was a hard worker who enjoyed the early-rising and late hours that go with farming and ranching. He was up early on Thursday morning, Sept. 27, working one of his horses at the rodeo arena. When returning his horse back to the barn, he was killed in an accident that occurred on FM 219. Survivors include his daughter, Jacelynn Slagle, and her mother, Summer Barron of Clifton; his mother, Holly and husband, Jim Begeal of Katy; his father, Terry Lee Slagle and wife, Maura of Fort Worth; one sister, Heather Slagle; three step-brothers, James and Robert Begeal of Katy, and Jimmy Slagle of Fort Worth; his paternal grandparents, Sam and Frances Slagle of Clifton; his maternal grandparents, Kennith and Margaret Hite of Lubbock; an aunt, Dr. Suzanne Hite of Houston; an uncle, Doug Hite of Austin; his aunt and uncle, Ken and Pam Slagle of Valley Mills; along with dear friends, Leonard Gayle and Ronnie Williams, and his loving companion, Casey Jones. All of these people were a great influence on his life. Interment
was in Clifton Memorial Park, under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Juanita Cox Anderson
Funeral services were held for Juanita Anderson, 96, of Clifton, on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home Chapel with Chaplain Pat Dietrich and the Rev. Glen Kramer officiating. Juanita Madgeline Cox was born Feb. 15, 1905, the daughter of Julia Jackson and Walter Cox. She was the eldest of two daughters. The family, including her sister, Mozell, lived in the Live Oak community. Her father died when she was five years old. Later, her mother, Julia, married
J.W. McDougal. To this union, one daughter, Imo Gene, and four sons, A.D., Bennie, Burton, and Vernon, were born. She attended school in Duffo, Live Oak, and Spring Creek and was active in sports and was on the basketball team at Live Oak, where three sets of sisters made up the team. On Feb. 23, 1923, she married
Ove Columbus Anderson at the St. Olaf Church parsonage in Cranfills Gap. The couple farmed at Live Oak and later owned a cafe in Cranfills Gap. After a few years, they moved to Laranzo, and farmed there. Five children were born to this union, including Oneta, Vere, D.J., Mary Ann, and Joyce. The son, D.J., died in infancy in 1927. They moved back to Cranfills Gap in 1939, and operated a grocery store. In 1941, Juanita and two of her daughters, Madge and Vere, were confirmed at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church. In 1945, the family moved to Clifton and became members at Trinity Lutheran Church. They owned and operated Anderson’s Cafe from eight years. Juanita was then employed at Clifton Mercantile until her retirement. For a number of years following her retirement, she enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family, loved cooking for her family, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed many hours sharing coffee with her many friends in Clifton. She spent the last 10 years of her life in Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. She was preceded in death by one son, her husband, Ove, of 41 years, one daughter, Joyce Weir, 1998; one granddaughter, Louane Railsback Faulkner, 1998; and a son-in-law, Charles Bronstad, 2000. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Madge and Alvin Prince fo Azle, Vere and Doug Railsback of Clifton, Ann Bronstad of Aurora, Colo., and Fred Weir of Azle; one grandson, David Railsback and wife, Christi of Waco; seven granddaughters, and husbands, Linda and Bill Davis of Azle, Janis and Brian Surnear of Fort Worth, Diane and Jim Withaeger of Arlington, Susan and Mark Rasmussen of Mableton, Ga., Lynn and Bill Porter of Sheridan, Wyo., Charlotte and Rick Orr of Waxahachie, and Sharon and Ricky Connot of Blossom; 15 great-grandchildren, including Stacy and Jason Simmons, Kim Maple, Bryan Davis, James Surnear, Julie and Brandon Olson, Courtney Rasmussen, Trey Porter, Kayla Orr, Lance and Tanner Connot, John, Jarred, and Brent Railsback; two great-great-grandchildren, Leah and Ethan Maple; one sister, Imo Gene Shelly; two brothers, Vernon McDougal and Bennie McDougal; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers included Bryan Davis, Greg Maple, Jon Railsback, Brandon Olson, Rick Connet, and Rick Orr. Memorials may be made to the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. Interment

Olivia Kathleen Jones
Funeral services were held for Olivia Kathleen Jones, 63, of Waco, on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Oak Crest Funeral Home Chapel, Waco, with L.C. Nobles officiating. Olivia Kathleen Sowell was born on Jan. 11, 1938, in Bosque County, the daughter of Gus and Mozell Sowell. She died on Sept. 26, 2001, at her home, after a courageous fight with cancer. She married
Ted Jones, Sr., on April 16, 1955. The couple had three children, whom she loved dearly. One of her favorite scriptures that she relied on for her entire dedicated life is found in proverbs 3:5-6. In her last days, it proved to be strength to her. She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, A.L. Sowell; and her beloved mother and father. Survivors include her two sons, Ted Jones, Jr. and wife, Diane, and Jarred Jones and wife, Tammy; one daughter, Gena Colley and husband, Mike, all of Waco; and 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A very special thank you from her family to her doctor and his helper of Scott & White, and to the nurses of VistaCare Hospice of Temple who cared for her in her last days.
