Dorman Sanders
Funeral services were held for Dorman Sanders, 80, on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at 11a.m., at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Kay Hawkins officiating. Visitation was on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Foss Funeral Home. Sanders was born March 24, 1922, in Crawford. He passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2002, in a Waco hospital. He was the son of Oscar and Nettie (Summerlin) Sanders. He was married
to Bobbie Reed on September 23, 1947, in Waco. He was a World War II Army Veteran with Battery A, 110th Field Artillery Battalion, 29th Division, and was part of the Normandy invasion on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. For many years, he was asphalt plant and highway construction general manager for Huaco Construction. He was a member of the John Armstrong Lodge #217 in Valley Mills. Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Sanders of Valley Mills; two sons, Tim Sanders and his wife, Anita of Hewitt, and Tracy Sanders of Valley Mills; five sisters, Jean Bass, MiIldred Stanford, Nadine Welborn, Dorothy Karpinsky, all of Waco, and Barbara Murphree of Valley Mills; four grandchildren, Chad Sanders, Lance Sanders, Wes Sanders, Brittany Sanders, and two step-grandchildren, Carla Quill and Kevin Quill. Pallbearers were Chad Sanders, Lance Sanders, Wes Sanders, Johnny Burns, David Veteto, and Marvin Franklin. Internment was in the Valley Mills cemetery with military honors under the direction of Foss Funeral Home in Valley Mills.
Mabel Angeline Burroughs Burreson
Funeral services were held for Mabel Angeline Burroughs Burreson, 97, of Valley Mills, on Friday, June 28, 2002, at First Baptist Church in Valley Mills, officiated by Rev. Russell Pogue. She passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002, in Speegelville. Mrs. Burreson was born on Dec. 22, 1904, in Springer Township, Logan Co., Indian Territory, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Arthur and Katie (Martin) Burroughs. She was the oldest of four children. In 1923, she married
Palmer Burreson. She formerly worked at Leslie’s Fried Chicken and was a manager at The Big Boy Burger in Killeen. She also had worked at The Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home and Valley Mills Care Center. She loved making quilts and sharing wonderful stories with her family about her early life as well as the families, which dated back to Civil War in Virginia. She also liked to travel, making trips this year to Missouri and Washington, D.C. She lived most of her life in central Texas, including Cranfills Gap, Waco, Killeen, and retiring to Valley Mills in 1960. She was preceded in death by her two brothers and sister, Ralph, Kirby, and Ruth; her husband in 1977; and one daughter, Ruth Vise. Survivors include five children, Dola Blum of Clifton, Mrs. Lynn (Cathryn) Grier, Ralph Burreson and his wife, Debra, Cora Wilson, and Mrs. Robert (Arazella) Lyster; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Internment was at the Valley Mills cemetery under the direction of Foss Funeral Home in Valley Mills.
Ada Hord
Graveside funeral services for Ada Hord, 88, of Stephenville, were held Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Poston-Odle cemetery near Valley Mills. Hord died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in a Stephenville nursing home. She was born ay 23, 1914, in Valley Mills, the daughter of Jesse and Kittye (Taylor) Warren. She was married
to J.P. Hord in 1936. Her husband preceded her in death in 1997. She had lived in the Stephenville area since 1959. Survivors include three sons, James L. Hord of Mesquite, Jimmy D. Hord of Wimberly, and M. Parnell Hord of Stephenville; one daughter, Leveta Hord of Arlington; one brother, Willis Warren of Andrews; four sisters, Bernice Light of Andrews, Charlene Laxton of Amarillo, Annie Belcher of Clifton, and Lola Thompson of Pampa; one grandson; and seven granddaughters. Foss Funeral Home of Valley Mills was in charge of arrangements.
Alvin Seawright
Funeral services were held for Alvin Seawright, 76, of Valley Mills, Monday, July 1, 2002, at 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Kay Hawkins officiating. Seawright was born April 21, 1926, on his grandfather’s farm in Bosque County. He passed away Thursday, June 27, 2002 in a Clifton Hospital. Seawright was the son of Charles Hugh and Hulda Lena (Walsleben) Seawright. He received his Masters in Economics from Texas A&M; as part of the class of 1947. He retired from the Farm Credit Bank after 32 years. He was a decorated WWII Army Veteran serving in the 94th Infantry Division in France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. He was married
to Wanda Wortham on December 25, 1948, in Valley Mills. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Hugh Seawright, a sister, Betty Sue Bailey, and a daughter, Karen Sue Seawright. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Wanda Wortham Seawright of Valley Mills; mother, Hulda Seawright of Valley Mills; daughter and son-in-law, Ron and Judy Miller of El Paso; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Patty Seawright of Sugarland, Jimmy and Gaye Lynn Seawright of Stephenville, Charles Seawright of Tyler, Ricky and Stephanie Seawright of McGregor, Don Seawright of Royce City; sister, Nell Norman of Valley Mills; 13 grandchildren, Patrick Seawright, Kevin Seawright, Melissa Burkett, Jennifer Barthels, Ashley Miller, John Seawright, Emily Seawright, Nicholas Seawright, Matthew Seawright, Megan Seawright, Angela Seawright, Brian Seawright, and Lauren Seawright; four great-grandchildren, Zachary and Samantha Burkett, Cole, and Cody Barthels. Internment was at the Valley Mills cemetery with military honors under the direction of Foss Funeral Home, Valley Mills.
Altarita Jaynes Heath
Funeral services for Altarita Jaynes Heath, 89, of Valley Mills, were held Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at First Baptist Church of Valley Mills, the Rev. Curtis Holland officiating. Interment
followed in Valley Mills cemetery. Heath died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in a Clifton hospital. She was born Aug. 26, 1913, in the Patton Community, the daughter of W.C. and Nannie (Potts) Jaynes. She married
Dennis Heath on Dec. 31, 1932, in China Spring. He preceded her in death in 1994. Heath formerly owned and operated the Valley Mills Laundramat and The Little Store, a convenience store located near the school. She was a member of Valley Mills First Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jason Albrecht and Kristi Martin; brother Charlie Lee Jaynes, Carl Jaynes, N.C. Jaynes, and Randolph Jaynes; and sisters Thelma Acord and Edith Kiel. Survivors include a son, Donald Ray Heath of Fort Worth; three daughters, Dorothy Jo Martin of Waco, Ginger Albrecht of Clifton, and Glenda Sears of Indiana; one brother, Bill Jaynes of Valley Mills; 10 grandchildren, Melissa Williams, Michelle Long, Shelly Clynch, Matthew Martin, Melanie Gloff, Sean Albrecht, Leslie Holton, Erik Sears, Courtney Nichols, and Joshua Sears; and nine great-grandchildren. Norma Jean Miller Schroeder
Funeral services for Norma Jean Miller Schroeder, 75, of Clifton, were held on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glenn Kramer officiating. Norma Jean Dahl was born on May 30, 1927, to Einar Alfred and Bessie Mae Seymour Dahl. She was brought in infancy for baptism at Trinity Lutheran Church and was confirmed there also. She passed to her heavenly reward on Sept. 26, 2002. On Dec. 9, 1945, she married
Poll Alex Miller of Valley Mills. She was a devoted wife and mother to her family, the church, and PTA. After her husband passed away, she worked five years as an RSVP Volunteer working with senior citizens, the food pantry, clothes closet, and the VA Hospital. She was an active member of both the American Legion and VFW auxiliaries in Clifton. She loved Country Western dancing and was a member of the Promanaders Square Dance Club. After illness and during nursing home residence, she met and married
Martin Bill Schroeder on July 22, 1998. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 40 years, the husband of her golden years, and her parents. Survivors are her son, Larry Miller and wife, Cathy, of Waco; four daughters, Janice Mancherian of Ft. Myers, Fla.; Betty Spross and husband, Clifford, of Waco; Linda Sammon and husband, Willard, of Reisel; and Mary Michaelwicz and husband, Lee, of Waco; 13 grandchildren, including Warren and Kevin Mancherian, Christy Anderson, Kandy Knowles, Sandy Spross, Seth, Jess, and Weston Sammon, Gerald and Marshall Miller, and Mark, Jake, and Brandy Michaelwicz; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dr. Ralph Dahl of Marshall, Kennard Dahl of Clifton, and Elvis Dahl of Minnesota; three sisters, Elda Eggen and husband, Floyd, of Tyler; Pasty Cranfill of Houston; and Mary Dahl of Clifton. Wilma ‘Jewel’ Mayfield
Funeral services were held for Wilma “Jewel” Mayfield, 89, of Fort Worth, on Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Greenwood Chapel in Fort Woth. Wilma “Jewel” Mayfield was born July 9, 1913, to Palmer Oscar and Hilma Emilia Erickson Lund near Clifton in Bosque County. She passed away on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in Fort Worth. She married
Richard “Dick” Mayfield on Oct. 24, 1929, in Gatesville. She had been a Fort Worth resident since 1942. She was a member of Ridgela United Methodist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Dick Mayfield. Survivors include a son, Richard Mayfield Jr. and wife, Virginia, of Weatherford; daughter, Joyce Mayfield Minter and her husband, Dennis, of Granbury; brother, Orin Lund of Clifton; sisters, Ima Franks and Amy Whitaker of Waco; grandchildren, Quentin Tate of Bedford, Stanley and wife, Terri Minter, of Hurst, Steve Minter of Cedar Park and Celeste Tate of Miami, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Julia and Erickson Minter of Hurst and Seth and Brynn Minter of Cedar Park; and many loving relatives and friends. Alton V. Erickson
Funeral services were held for Alton V. Erickson, 87, of Arlington, on Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Greenwood Chapel in Arlington. Alton V. Erickson was born Oct. 1, 1914, in Clifton. He passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, in Arlington. His marriage to Lucile Sebesta was followed by service in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Erickson worked for Gulf Oil Corporation in Fort Worth, Odessa, Roswell, and Oklahoma City, retiring after 42 years of service. After his wife, Lucile’s, passing in 1989, he relocated to Arlington to be closer to his daughters. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Arlington, Seniors Golf Association, Chevron/Texaco Retirees, and Senior Friends. He enjoyed golf, tennis, travel, and activities at the Senior Citizens Center. Erickson will be lovingly remembered by family and friends for his infectious laugh and the mischievous twinkle in his blue eyes. Survivors include his daughters, Dorothy Carnes of Albuquerque, N.M., and Melinda Lee and husband, Kenny, of Arlington; grandchild, Amy Carnes of Albuquerque; brother, Burton Erickson of Waco; sister, Margie Anz of Clifton; and nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to All Saints Lutheran Church of Arlington or the American Heart Association. Interment
was in Greenwood Memorial Park, under the direction of Greenwood Funeral Home of Arlington.
Jewel King Pilant
Funeral services were held for Jewel King Pilant, 83, of Clifton on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Daniel Gann officiating. Jewel King Clark was born on May 15, 1919, in Walnut Springs, to Robert D. Clark and Rosa King Moncrief Clark. She passed away on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. She attended school in Walnut Springs from 1925 to 1931, and then in Clifton from 1932 to 1937. In June 1937, she married
Jewell A. Pilant in Meridian. She was formerly employed at Kincheloe Cleaners and Wall’s Industries. She enjoyed reading and spending time with family and friends. She was a devoted Christian, a Sunday School teacher, church secretary, and a teacher at a private Christian school. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Rosa Clark; brothers, Sam Alvin, James, and John Blake Clark; and sisters Mary Moore, Ruth Moore, and Berniece Willingham. Survivors include her husband, Jewell A. Pilant; sons Billy, Bobby, and Kenneth Pilant; daughter Mary Brewer, all of Clifton; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers included Kevin Pilant, Kelly Pilant, Don Pilant, Bill Edwards, Billy Pilant, Jr., and Rodney Brewer. Interment
was in Clifton Memorial Park under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
