Joel Clay Jorgenson
Memorial services were held for Joel Clay Jorgenson, 81, of Springdale, Ark., on Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Good Shephard Lutheran Church, Fayetteville, Ark., with the Rev. Bob Lutze officiating. Jorgenson was born on Sept. 20, 1921 in Clifton. He passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, after a short illness. He was a retired Lutheran minister who served in parishes in Iowa and Michigan, before retiring to Arkansas in 1984. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Good Shephard Lutheran Church of Fayetteville. He was preceded in death by a wife, Leanne Jorgenson. Survivors include his wife, Louetta Jorgenson of Springdale, Ark.; two sons, Joel C. Jorgenson of Brandon, S.D., and Jonathan Jorgenson of North Richland Hills; a daughter, Joanne Bolash of Lexington, Ky., a sister, Ruth Ludwig of Houston; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Good Shephard Lutheran Church Stained Glass Window Fund, 2925 Old Missouri Road, Fayetteville, Ark. 72703. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berna Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
Melvin (Boots) Sadler, Sr.
Funeral services for Melvin (Boots) Sadler, Sr., 96, of Valley Mills, were held Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Valley Mills First Baptist Church, the Rev. W.C. Wright officiating. Interment
followed at Rock Springs cemetery. Sadler died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in a Clifton hospital. He was born Dec. 23, 1905, near Valley Mills, the son of Logan and Nancy (Sinty) Sadler. He married
Rose Lee Sadler in Meridian in 1933. She preceded him in death in 1988. Sadler had farmer in the Valley Mills area most of his life. He is survived by two sons, Melvin Sadler, Jr., and Laurice Sadler, both of Waco; one brother, Jack (Pinky) Sadler of Valley Mills; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. M.C. (Blackie) Plummer
Graveside funeral services for M.C. (Blackie) Plummer, 98, of Valley Mills, were held Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at the Valley Mills cemetery, the Rev. Russell Pogue officiating. Plummer died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at a local nursing home. He was born Oct. 22, 1904, in Mullins, the son of Walter and Lulu (Brockenbrough) Plummer. He married
Norma Lee Wilson in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1980. Plummer was a retired diesel mechanic, and had formerly worked for Fred Hall Construction. His favorite saying was, “See what I mean?” Survivors include a stepdaughter, Mrs. Gene (Frankie) Smith of Valley Mills; a son, Mack Plummer of Arizona; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Matilda K. French
Graveside funeral services for Matilda K. French, 38, of Valley Mills, were held Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at Eagle Springs cemetery (near McGregor), with Dr. John Hogan officiating. French died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was born April 18, 1964, in Austin, the daughter of David and Loretta (Israel) Stark. She was a graduate of Gatesville High School. Jerry French on Aug. 12, 1989, in Valley Mills, and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Prior to her illness, she was employed at PMSI in Waco. She is survived by her husband, Jerry French; her mother, Loretta Huffman of Hamilton; a son, Roy Holden, Jr., of Gatesville; a daughter, Amanda and husband Toby Small of Gatesville; two stepdaughters, Sherry Roberts and Lisa Lynch, both of Valley Mills; a brother, David Stark of Hamilton; two sisters, Jane Robinson of Hamilton, and Lorene McFarland of Priddy; a grandson, T.J. Small; and five step-grandchildren, Amanda, Aarin, and Sarah Roberts, and Colton and Jake Lynch. Foss Funeral Home, Valley Mills, was in charge of arrangements.
Frankie Spence Casiano
Funeral services for Frankie Spence Casiano, 45, of Waco, were held Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at First Baptist Church, the Rev. Henry Curtis officiating. Interment
followed at Hillcrest cemetery. Casiano died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, in a Temple hospital. She was born Nov. 16, 1956, in Valley Mills, the daughter of Percy and Fannie (Locke) Spence. She married
Henry Casiano on Jan. 12, 1987, in Waco. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwendolyn Grace Jackson. Casiano is survived by her husband, Harry Casiano of Waco; a daughter, Phyllis Poteet of Waco; a son, Harry Andrew Casiano of Waco; a stepson, Joe Oliver Casiano of Waco; a sister, Fannie Lowe of Austin; a brother, Percy Spence III of San Antonio; and seven grandchildren. William A. Jaynes
Funeral services for William A. Jaynes, 91, of Valley Mills, were held Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Patton Baptist Church, the Rev. Russell Pogue officiating. Interment
followed in Valley Mills cemetery. Jaynes died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in Waco. He was born April 24, 1911, in the Patton Community, the son of W.C. and Nannie (Potts) Jaynes. He married
Mayme Weir in Crawford in 1932. He was a member of Patton Baptist Church, and was a 50-year Mason and a member of the John Armstrong Masonic Lodge #217 in Valley Mills. Jaynes was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Jaynes; by brothers Charlie Lee Jaynes, Carl Jaynes, N.C. Jaynes, and Randolph Jaynes; and by sisters Thelma Acord, Edith Kiel, and Altarita Heath. He is survived by his wife, Mayme Jaynes of Valley Mills; two sons, Weldon and wife Judith Jaynes of Arlington, and Larry and wife Lisa Jaynes of Waco; a daughter, Betty Charlton of Waco; grandchildren Trace Green, Brian Jaynes, John Charlton, Richard Charlton, Greg Jaynes, Kelly Jaynes, Amanda Jaynes, and Erik Jaynes; and by six great-grandchildren. J.L. (Les) Lundberg
Funeral services were held for J.L. (Les) Lundberg, 92, of Clifton, on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at 2 p.m., at First United Methodist Church in Valley Mills with the Rev. Kay Hawkins and the Rev. Cleon Flannagan officiating. Lundberg was born Aug. 5, 1910, in Junction City, Kan., the seventh of eight sons of Johannes and Mary Wieder Lundberg. He passed away on Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in the Goodall-Witcher Nursing Facility in Clifton. He graduated from North High School in Omaha, Neb., and attended Creighton University there. He married
Miriam Dayton on June 13, 1934. The couple moved to Texas in 1942 with Dayton Brother’s Construction Company for which Lundberg was a supervisor. After purchasing land near Valley Mills, he farmed and later became manager of the locker plant in Valley Mills. He also worked as an agent for Bosque County Farm Bureau and started his own income tax preparation firm. His son joined the firm in 1970, and Lundberg served as an accountant when his son, Richard, opened his own CPA practice. Lundberg was involved with the HOT Council, Boy Scouts of America, and served on the Valley Mills School Board. He was a member of and held numerous leadership positions in First United Methodist Church of Valley Mills and was one of the original trustees of Goodall-Witcher Healthcare Foundation in Clifton. He was a Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was preceded in death by his wife, Miriam, on Dec. 16, 1982; as well as his seven brothers. He is survived by his son, Richard Lundberg and wife, Cheryll, of Clifton; grandchildren, Stacey Stiff and husband, Tim, of Baytown; and Adam Lundberg and wife, Tricia, of Valley Mills; great-grandchildren, Christian, Dayton, and Ethan Stiff; his extended family, and a host of friends and relatives. Pallbearers were Gene Aars, Bob Allen, Wayne Gloff, Bill Key, Dave McTaggart, and Jim Smith. Interment
was in Valley Mills cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
Violet Rhoades McVicker
Graveside services for Violet Rhoades McVicker, 85, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in Rose Hill cemetery in Cleburne. McVicker was born Oct. 27, 1918, to Wesley and Desy Forsythe Rhoades in Paris, Texas. She passed away Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Walls Regional Hospital in Cleburne. McVicker moved with her parents to Johnson County at an early age, settling in the Goatneck/Rio Vista areas. She was married
to Milton “Buddy” Lancaster, and three children were born to this union. She married
H. E. “Mac” McVicker on Nov. 27, 1957. He passed away April 6, 1976. Mrs. McVicker was a member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church in Cleburne. Survivors include her children, Wesley Lancaster of Cleburne, Modine Souther of Ft. Worth, and Rosalyn White of Clifton; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill and Travis Rhoades; two sisters, Edna Massengale and Anita Rice, all of Cleburne; and many nieces and nephews. Rosser Funeral Home was in charge of internment.
Iva Weatherbee Ness
Funeral services for Iva Weatherbee Ness, 73, were held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Worth, followed by interment at Greenwood cemetery. Ness was born April 19, 1929, the fifth child of Richard and Olga Weatherbee, in the historic Norwegian settlement near Clifton. She passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, surrounded by her family at home in Fort Worth. The family moved to Fort Worth in 1942, and one year later purchased a home three blocks south of Trinity Lutheran Church so that Iva, her mother, and three sisters could walk to church to attend the many activities there, like choir practices, Altar Guild meetings, and Sunday services. A charter member and one of the first confirmands at Trinity, Ness also taught Sunday School, sponsored youth activities, served on the church Council, coordinated the resettlement of a Cambodian refugee family, and most recently served on the Call Committee. She graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1946. She met her husband, Bud, at Trinity, and they married
there in 1957. After raising two children, they enjoyed many years of travel to Colorado, California, and Norway, of participation in the Leikarring Norwegian folk dancing group, and of membership in the Norwegian Society of Texas. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard P. Weatherbee; a sister, Opal Weatherbee Schultz; her mother, Olga Olson Weatherbee, and husband, Halvor “Bud” Ness. Survivors include her brother, Floyd Weatherbee of Montgomery, AL; two sisters, Ruth Level of Fort Worth and Marge Wigstone of Arlington; a son, Richard Ness and his wife, Mandy, of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Karen Berning and her husband, David, of Fort Worth; and four grandchildren, Caroline Ness, Lauren, Wade, and Calvin Berning. Pallbearers were Jim Level, Craig Level, Chris Level, Cameron Level, Jay Wigstone, and Bob Thompson. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or a charity of choice.
Helen Joy Straus Hodge
Funeral services are being held today, Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, for Helen Joy Straus Hodge, 77, of Clifton, at First United Methodist Church in Clifton, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Tom Beaty officiating. A graveside service will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in the Trees cemetery in Duncanville, at 2 p.m. She passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003. Born to M.M. and Winnie Ramsey Straus, she was a descendent of a pioneer family of Dallas County. She was the great-granddaughter of Crawford and Anna Kimmel Trees, the first recorded marriage in Dallas county. Her father, M.M. Straus served on the Dallas City Council for eight years, was a bank founder and owner of Straus Brothers General Store. Helen Hodge graduated from Stevens College and Southern Methodist University, BBS. She was a Delta Gamma at SMU. She was a member of Kessler Park Methodist Church for 70-plus years and an associate member of the First United Methodist Church of Clifton for the past 15 years. She was a member of many civic and social clubs both in Clifton and Dallas. She will be remember for the great love, laughter, and joy she brought to our lives. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother who loved her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, James Calvin Hodge; sons James Marshall and wife, Janet, Bradley Clark, David Calvin and wife, Cathy; grandchildren Cal and wife, Angela, Jennifer, Brandon, Michael, Kristin, and Chelsea. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas or to a favorite charity. Clifton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
